Scarfy

| ||||||||||||||||||
| “ | They look friendly at first, but just wait... | ” | — Description ofScarfy from theKirby: Triple Deluxe website |
Scarfy is an orange, floating catlike creature who is one ofKirby's oldest and most ubiquitousenemies in the series, first appearing inKirby's Dream Land and being present in all of the main-series titles since then, as well as several spin-offs. He can be found floating in the air sporting an innocent-looking Kirby-like face and bright open smile. However, if Kirby angers him, Scarfy turns into a hideous cycloptic demon with sharp fangs in a gaping jaw and a duller brown coloration, known asAngry Scarfy,[1] and chases him down until Scarfy is defeated, explodes, or returns to normal.
Throughout the series, Scarfy can take on a number of different behavior patterns, but his most common strategy is to hover in place, only chasing Kirby if he tries toinhale him or otherwise attacks him. Some may only transform when Kirby or another character is holding a carry item such as akey (these are calledHunter Scarfies), while others may turn hostile when Kirby passes by them. Others still may turn hostile immediately. When Scarfy turns angry, he will typically chase Kirby down for several moments before slowing down and detonating in an explosion. This explosive nature is likely the reason why Scarfy grants theCrashCopy Ability when scanned usingCopy inKirby Super Star andKirby Super Star Ultra. Otherwise, Scarfy cannot provide an ability, because he cannot be inhaled.

Kirby's Dream Land[edit]
Scarfy debuts in the first installment of the series,Kirby's Dream Land, where his official artwork shows him to be a pinkish hue with red cheeks. Here, he is encountered only inBubbly Clouds and the section ofMt. Dedede devoted to it. Scarfy slowly floats up and down in one place untilKirby attempts to inhale him, at which point he transforms into his cycloptic form and begins to chase him and eventually explode. Defeating Scarfy likewise causes him to detonate, harming Kirby if he gets caught in the blast. Many Scarfies are initially hidden, but quickly fly into view once Kirby gets near them.
Kirby's Adventure /Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

![]()
Scarfy reappears inKirby's Adventure and its remake,Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Although the originalNintendo Entertainment System game portrays him in the same way as the previous game, including using the same artwork, itsGame Boy Advance remake makes use of the enemy's more recent orange design.
Here, Scarfy acts very similarly to his original appearance. Scarfies that are initially exposed are much more frequent in these games, while those that are hidden usually move onto the same height as Kirby when they reveal themselves. Due to the introduction of Copy Abilities, they can often be destroyed without being given the chance to transform. Unlike in the previous game, they do not create a harmful explosion when beaten, simply popping like most other enemies instead (although inKirby's Adventure, hitting them with anAir Bullet causes them to explode as normal).

Kirby's Pinball Land[edit]
InKirby's Pinball Land, Scarfy appears in the lowermost board ofKracko Land. Here, he must be bumped into six times (for 450 points each bump) to result in him splitting into three smaller Scarfies. From here, if Kirby bumps into one of the small Scarfies, he will briefly take his place (and earn 120 points) before the other two push him away. If Kirby takes the place of the top Scarfy, he will be pushed up into the middle board.
Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]

Scarfy returns inKirby's Dream Land 2, using the same sprite as in the first game and lacking official artwork. He first appears inBig Forest and behaves identically to his original incarnation, apart from the fact that he always appears in plain view. When Kirby destroys a Scarfy, he is awarded 1000 points, the third-highest amount of points he can receive from any enemy in the game.
One particular Scarfy found in the first stage of Big Forest guards abag containingCoo; once the Scarfy is destroyed, the owl-like creature is freed.

Kirby's Block Ball[edit]
Scarfy appears as a common enemy inKirby's Block Ball. It is worth 600 points when defeated and drops aCrash item.
Kirby Super Star /Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

![]()
![]()
InKirby Super Star andits remake, Scarfies are found in various stages, retaining their behavior from before. Due to the introduction of a health point system for enemies, not every attack defeats them instantly anymore. Any attack that fails to destroy a Scarfy (including certain Copy Abilities, exhaling Air Bullets at it, or simply touching it) instead angers it, causing it to transform and chase Kirby.
These games also include a rarer variety of Scarfy, which assumes its alternate look and follows Kirby whenever he turns his back to it, but stops and turns back into its initial form when he faces it, in a similar manner as theMumbies from laterKirby games or theBoo enemies from theMario series.
InMilky Way Wishes, where many enemies receive different colorations, Scarfies can be either purple or yellow. UsingCopy on any form of Scarfy grants Kirby theCrash ability. InRevenge of the King, Scarfy is replaced by a similar enemy calledMister Anglep.
If Scarfy is grabbed and survives (such as throughWing's low-damage Toss attack), it will be briefly stunned, during which it is vulnerable to inhaling. This can be used to obtain Crash without the use of Copy.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]
InKirby's Dream Land 3, Scarfy bears a light pink coloration not unlike his original design, but retains the bright cheeks fromKirby Super Star. His transformed form also possesses a more pinkish or red shape than in other appearances of the enemy. Scarfy usually behaves the same in this game as in its predecessor, but a few specimens found mainly in later levels slowly follow Kirby instead of remaining in one place, even without being angered.
Apart from not being inhalable, Scarfy is vulnerable to any attack and does not create a harmful explosion upon his defeat. Although it is possible to harm a Scarfy without immediately beating him by using aheadbutt, this does not cause him to transform. Unlike Kirby,Rick andGooey are able to eat Scarfies without causing them to transform.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]
InKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Scarfy is once again seen in orange, but still turns red rather than brown when angered. In this game, he is first encountered in the first stage ofRock Star and acts differently from most of his other appearances. Like certain Scarfies inKirby Super Star, they remain still when Kirby is looking at them, but transform into their angry form and follow Kirby while his back is turned to them. After following him for a while, they explode, causing damage to him if he is in their blast radius.
As in his other appearances, Scarfy cannot be inhaled. Trying to do so causes him to permanently become mad, even if Kirby is facing him. Like other enemies in the game that do not yield a Copy Ability, Scarfy does not respawn once defeated.
Scarfy also appears on the 65thEnemy Info Card.

Scarfy makes an appearance inKirby Air Ride as a common enemy onAir Ride courses. He hovers in place minding his own business unless Kirby tries to inhale him, at which point he will turn angry and chase him down. Scarfy can otherwise by defeated with any other attack.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror &Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]
AsKirby & The Amazing Mirror andKirby: Squeak Squad take many of its graphics directly fromNightmare in Dream Land, Scarfies are likewise depicted in the same way in these games. Although they behave just like their appearance inKirby's Adventure, the presence of a health system makes it possible to harm a Scarfy without defeating him; like inKirby Super Star, doing so causes it to transform. As the Scarfies in these games have the same amount of health as aWaddle Dee, however, most attacks destroy them instantly.
When possessed byGhost Kirby, Scarfy can be made to turn angry when B is pressed, though this only makes him move faster, and he reverts after a few seconds. He can attack only by collision, which harms Scarfy in the process. A notable detail inKirby: Squeak Squad is that inhaling Scarfies with theThrow ability actually grabs them, which was not possible in previous games where the ability appears.

Scarfy appears in yarn form inKirby's Epic Yarn andKirby's Extra Epic Yarn. Despite this, Scarfy can be easily defeated using ayarn ball or with theWeight transformation. InKirby's Extra Epic Yarn, Scarfy can be found both in the main game and inStage 2 of theSub-GameSlash & Bead.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]
Scarfy once again appears inKirby's Return to Dream Land as well as itsremake. They come in two primary varieties, differentiated by their color. The regular orange ones behave as they have for the series up to this point. The red ones, however, are a type known asHunter Scarfy. These Scarfies lie in wait in various places that containkeys, and are passive until Kirby or one of his friends picks the key up. They then turn hostile and chase that key holder with surprising speed, giving up the chase only if the key is dropped or used. In this case, their actions resemblePhantos fromDoki Doki Panic and theMario series.
Similar enemies also exist throughout the game to replace Scarfy and match the surroundings and which have similar behavior to Scarfy, such asMumbies (who pursues Kirby when he is not looking) andDegout (who behaves the same as Scarfy but is more powerful).

| “ | Cute, huh? They're the best pets you can get. These cuddly critters are called Scarfies! | ” | — N.M.E. Sales Guy describing the Scarfies inDedede's Pet Threat |
Scarfy makes an appearance as amonster in theKirby: Right Back at Ya! episodeDedede's Pet Threat. Here,King Dedede orders four of them as pets fromNight Mare Enterprises. He proceeds to spoil them rotten by feeding them absurd amounts of food, so much so that they cost him millions in expenses in a single day. Seeing this, King Dedede immediately rejects his pets and abandons them inWhispy Woods Forest. From here, the Scarfies proceed to eatMayor Len's sheep, start multiplying in number, and then terrorizeKirby and chase him throughoutDream Land. Kirby eventually leads them back toCastle Dedede, where King Dedede is obliged to feed them the original food they came with. However, when the Scarfies eat these bone treats, they turn into their monstrous angry form and proceed to attack everyone in the castle. Kirby tries toinhale them to stop them but - true to the games - he cannot do so. Instead, he inhales King Dedede's hammer to gain theHammerCopy Ability, and uses this to pacify the Scarfies after knocking the bone treats out of their mouths. King Dedede is then left to try and sell them back to N.M.E., but he is told that he cannot do so because they have multiplied, and must instead pay to get rid of them.
The Scarfies here are largely true to their physical appearance in the games, but their behavior is fairly different. Here, they are depicted as being cat-like creatures with voracious appetites, and can become rather picky about what they eat, particularly if spoiled beforehand. Despite this, they tend to like raw meat the most, and particularly like the way Kirby tastes, though they findTokkori to be unpalatable. They are shown to be able to rapidly multiply, as an initial group of four quickly becomes a horde of three hundred over the course of a single day and night. Unlike the Scarfies from the games, the Scarfies in the anime appear to have three distinct forms; in addition to the two from the games, there is also an intermediate form which the Scarfies take on after they are abandoned. The Scarfies are also one of the few monsters that Kirby does not actually destroy, but merely pacifies.

- Kirby getting bitten by a Scarfy
- The Scarfies eating everything in Tuggle's grocery store
- Hammer Kirby facing off against the angry Scarfies
- King Dedede left to deal with hundreds of Scarfies
In theKirby novel series[edit]
In theKirby novel series, Scarfy is a peaceful resident ofDream Land. He appears inKirby: Welcome to the Starlight Theater!. When Kirby mistakes Scarfy for an orange and tries to inhale him, Scarfy turns into Angry Scarfy and goes on a rampage across Dream Land. Afterwards, Scarfy turns back to normal, but feels remorseful and is unwilling to go out. Scarfy meets the director of the Starlight Theater,Lulu, who helps him regain his good mood. The grateful Scarfy then helps Lulu promote the theater and invite the citizens of Dream Land to see its performances.
