— Instruction -Kirby Super Star

Samurai Kirby is asub-game appearing in severalKirby games, most notably inKirby Super Star, where it serves as one of the two side games along withMegaton Punch. In both that game andKirby Super Star Ultra, Samurai Kirby can be played by pressing any button, and features three different difficulty levels.

InKirby Super Star Ultra, Samurai Kirby is unlocked after completing theMeta Knightmare Ultra main game. With the exception of the title screen, it was directly ported from the original version, with the only differences being that two-player support was dropped and the name of Cook Kawasaki was changed toChef Kawasaki.

InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Samurai Kirby can be played with up to four players simultaneously, who can face off against each-other. There is also a new variant of the game calledSamurai Kirby 100, where the player faces off against 99 other players (though not in real time) to see how their reaction time compares.

A demo of Samurai Kirby was also broadcast in the Japan-exclusiveKirby's Toy Box.

InKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, the sub-gameQuick Draw is a modified version of Samurai Kirby, and is known by a matching name in the Japanese version.

Gameplay[edit]

Kirby facing off against King Dedede; his fourth opponent in Samurai Kirby, inKirby Super Star

Samurai Kirby showsKirby standing and facing his opponent in a grassy field at sunset. The objective is to draw faster than the opponent, by pressing any button immediately after an exclamation mark signal appears. The round will restart if Kirby draws too early, which gives him a strike. The sub-game ends when Kirby loses to an opponent, or when Kirby gets three strikes in a row. A sign at the lower-right of the screen indicates the time from the signal to the reaction. Kirby uses a different weapon against every opponent, and likewise, every opponent uses their own.

When playing with a second player inKirby Super Star, the player 1 character is always Kirby and the player 2 character is randomly picked among Kirby's five opponents. When playing multiplayer inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, player 1 is always Kirby while players 2, 3 and 4 can pick betweenKing Dedede,Meta Knight,Bandana Waddle Dee, or another Kirby. If played with two players, it uses the sideways perspective from the original; if played with three or four, it uses the angled perspective ofQuick Draw. If a retry is deemed between 2 or 3 players in a 3-4 player match, the players not included in the retry will sit out until a win is given. In 3-4 player matches, faulting twice will make the player sit out as well. Players sitting out will depict their character sitting facing away, looking sad and are unable to act until next match.

Trivia[edit]

  • The title logo calligraphy for the Japanese version was written byMasahiro Sakurai himself with a brush pen.[1]
  • In the Japanese version, the character names are written using hiragana instead of katakana. InKirby Super Star andKirby Super Star Ultra, the text is written vertically right-to-left, like a traditional scroll.
    • In the international versions ofKirby Super Star andKirby Super Star Ultra, the Japanese scrolls seen during gameplay are kept, with a translation running across the bottom of the screen. This resulted in the removal of the animated grass at the bottom of the screen inKirby Super Star, which was restored inKirby Super Star Ultra.
    • InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, the text is fully translated in all languages and written horizontally left-to-right, even in the Japanese version.
  • The "sword master" Kirby in this sub-game is referenced by the TopknotHeadgear forNinja Kirby inKirby Battle Royale.
  • Meta Knight's sprite shows that his mask has a scar on his left eye; this corresponds toDark Meta Knight's scar.
  • In the Korean release ofKirby Super Star Ultra, most of the game's sprites are altered to remove references to Japanese culture. Namely, the Japanese text scrolls are translated into Korean rather than being subtitled, Kirby and Meta Knight's topknots are removed, the scar on Meta Knight's face is absent, and all other characters use their regular in-game sprites. This is due to South Korea's restrictions on Japanese cultural imports, which were implemented in response to Japan's occupation of the Korean peninsula from 1910 to 1945; most of these restrictions were gradually lifted from 1998 to 2004, but some still remain in place.
    • In all versions ofKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, the unique Japanese outfits in the original were replaced with topknots for every character, which may be related to this.
