| “ | On the ground, Rick's the best. He won't slide on ice! Hop on Rick and get cruisin'! | ” | — Kirby's Dream Land 3 Instruction booklet |
Rick is a large hamster-like creature and one ofKirby's sixAnimal Friends, making his first appearance inKirby's Dream Land 2. He is distinguished by his orange and white fur, his beady eyes and whiskers, and his bulbous frame with two small feet to carry him and additionally Kirby when the two are paired up with each-other. Pairing up Rick with Kirby allows for a number of different methods of attack based on whatCopy Ability the pink puffball has at a certain time, though these vary heavily in effectiveness.
Rick makes his most prominent appearances inKirby's Dream Land 2,Kirby's Dream Land 3,Kirby Star Allies, andKirby Air Riders, where he is a playable character (though usually paired up with either Kirby,Gooey, or another Animal Friend). He has appeared in a large number of other games as well, though he rarely makes more than a cameo appearance. While seldom seen in isolation fromKine andCoo, he is the one with the most standalone appearances. Rick also has a supporting role in the anime seriesKirby: Right Back at Ya!, where he has the ability to speak in full sentences and lives with other intelligent animals in a bigoak tree in anancient woodland.
Characteristics[edit]
Rick's appearance is that of a large and bulbous bipedal hamster with relatively short arms and stubby pink feet similar to those of Kirby. Despite his rounded features, however, he does have a distinct head and body, unlike the pink puffball who rides on his back. Rick's fur is largely white, with prominent orange splotches covering the top of his head and on his back. His face consists of two small beady eyes spread far apart, with a small snout between them tipped by a pink triangular nose and a set of whiskers, and two small pointed ears on top of his head. He has a small rounded tail which is not always visible due to his bulbous shape.
Rick's forte is his speed and versatility on the ground, being able to walk on icy surfaces with better traction compared to other characters, and being able to jump off the heads of enemies to gain additional height, partially making up for his inability to hover or jump in midair. His swimming speed is also fairly slow. Last but not least in his movement kit is the ability to climb walls, which he does with great effectiveness in stages such asCloudy Park - Stage 5 inKirby's Dream Land 3. Unlike the other Animal Friends, Rick will eat enemies directly when paired up with Kirby or Gooey, though he can onlyinhale inKirby's Dream Land 2.
Rick can be considered to be the most prominent of Kirby's six Animal Friends, since he is always the first to be introduced, and is usually the one that Kirby pairs up with in artwork and in-game cutscenes. He has also shown up in cameo appearances more often than his two main counterpartsKine andCoo. Like the other Animal Friends, Rick is always angling to get Kirby to travel with him, and can be seen sobbing when Kirby picks someone else as a companion. Rick also has a tendency to occasionally bully both Kine and Coo, particularly in the time-out cutscenes in theRound Clear mode ofKirby's Star Stacker forGame Boy.

Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]
Rick makes his debut appearance as anAnimal Friend inKirby's Dream Land 2. He is the first friendKirby meets on his adventure, appearing in the second stage ofGrass Land as well as in the level's intro.
When traveling together with Rick, Kirby rides on his back. Teaming up with the hamster enables him to walk a little bit faster and prevents him from slipping on ice, but makes him unable to fly, which can make certain locations impossible to escape from without leaving the friend behind. Additionally, Rick can inhale, swallow, and spit out enemies like Kirby.
Like the other Animal Friends, teaming up with Rick while possessing aCopy Ability grants Kirby access to new skills, which combine Rick's powers with the attributes of Kirby's ability. When Rick is with Kirby, his theme music also plays.
Combinations[edit]
| Base Ability | Appearance | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Burning | Rick breathes flames with a low range while the B button is held, much like theFire ability seen in other games. | |
| Cutter | Rick throws Kirby like a boomerang in the direction he is facing. Compared to the default Cutter, it has greater range but slower speed. | |
| Ice | Freezes enemies around Rick while the B button is held, much like theFreeze ability. Rick cannot move while using this power. | |
| Needle | Rick extends quills from his back, but leaves his front vulnerable. | |
| Parasol | Rick balances a parasol on his nose and a ball-shaped Kirby on top of it, harming enemies above him. | |
| Spark | Enables Rick to use a whip of electricity, like theBeam ability seen in other games. | |
| Stone | Kirby balances on top of Rick as the hamster turns into a rolling boulder, crushing all enemies in their path. |
Locations[edit]
Rick can be released in the following levels and stages:

Kirby's Toy Box[edit]
In theStar Breaker mini-game ofKirby's Toy Box, which is similar toKirby's Block Ball, two Ricks appear in place of a paddle. Together they hold a trampoline for Kirby to bounce off, and therefore are the characters controlled by the player. When a stage is cleared (or idle) theylook at the screen, and ifGame Over is reached, one is seen nose bumping the other on the head.
In theCannonball mini-game, players operate large mechanical robots which resemble Rick.
Kirby's Star Stacker[edit]
Rick returns inKirby's Star Stacker forGame Boy, alongside the other two friendsKine andCoo. Just like the other animals, he appears as one of the three types of Friend Blocks essential for destroying the various other kinds of blocks. As such, it acts identically to the other two Friend Blocks but requires other Rick blocks for a reaction to take place.
Apart from being an integral gameplay element, the hamster is also seen in the various "time out" cutscenes between rounds, where he can often be seen toying with the other two friends, as well as in several of the pictures unlocked by completing certain modes. Finishing Normal mode shows him and Kirby having a picnic in a woodland, and he is seen together with the other Animal Friends in the pictures awarded for completing Super Hard and Insane!.
Rick also shows up in theSuper Famicom remake ofKirby's Star Stacker, where he appears in the story mode cutscenes and has the same role as a Friend Block in gameplay.
Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]

Rick returns as a friend for Kirby to team up with inKirby's Dream Land 3, alongside the other Animal Friends from the game's predecessor. Although his design remains mostly the same, the spots of his fur have become brighter, particularly in his in-game sprites, where they are almost yellow. His eyes are also altered, having dotted pupils instead of wedge-shaped and blue highlights, though the latter is only seen in official artwork. He appears together withNago in the first stage of Grass Land, and can once again be seen in the intro of the level.
Although Rick still does not slip on ice like in the previous game, his other powers have changed greatly; the hamster is now able to wall-jump, allowing him to climb walls that would otherwise not be passable, but is considerably slower and has lost the ability to inhale. Instead, Rick opens his mouth while the Y button is held and is able to eat enemies he walks into. Once an opponent is in his mouth, however, he can spit it out or swallow it as if he had inhaled it. ThePropeller enemy moves faster in his presence if it possesses a yellow coloring.
Just like other Animal Friends, the hamster once again grants Kirby access to different skills if the pink hero possesses a Copy Ability, although a few of these combinations differ slightly from those of the previous game.
Combinations[edit]
| Base Ability | Appearance | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Burning | Rick breathes flames with a low range while the Y button is held, much like theFire ability seen in other games. | |
| Clean | Rick briefly cleans the area directly in front of him with a blue feather duster, harming opponents. | |
| Cutter | Rick throws Kirby like a boomerang, making him slowly fly through the air and attempt to return to the hamster. If Rick moves just right, it is possible to prevent Kirby from returning to his back, causing him to repeatedly orbit his friend instead. | |
| Ice | While the Y button is held, small snowballs appear above Kirby, which can freeze enemies. Rick cannot move while using this power, although he slides a bit if he is already in motion while activating it. It acts similarly to theFreeze ability, though somewhat less so than its previous appearance. | |
| Needle | Rick extends quills from his back, but leaves his front vulnerable. | |
| Parasol | Rick balances a parasol on his nose and a ball-shaped Kirby on top of it, harming enemies above him. | |
| Spark | Enables Rick to use a whip of electricity, similar to theBeam ability seen in other games. | |
| Stone | Kirby balances on top of Rick as the hamster turns into a rolling boulder, crushing all enemies in their path. |

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]
Although Rick does not appear in person inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, he makes a cameo as one of the statues Kirby can turn into by using theStone-CutterPower Combo. As the Rick sculpture, Kirby can walk slowly and make small jumps, as well as jump off walls like Rick can inKirby's Dream Land 3. As with the other results of Stone-Cutter, Kirby is invincible in this form and may end the transformation at any time by pushing the ability button again, causing the statue to crumble and harm nearby enemies with its debris.

InKirby: Canvas Curse, Rick makes a minor appearance as a painting created byPaint Roller in the sub-gamePaint Panic.
Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

InKirby's Return to Dream Land, Rick cameos once more as a random Stone transformation. Instead of being given his own separate statue, however, he is part of a sculpture consisting of all of Kirby's original Animal Friends (Rick, Kine, and Coo). This result differs from other results of using the Stone ability only in appearance and size.
InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, the Animal Friends statue from the original is replaced by the one fromKirby Star Allies, depicting Rick, Kine, and Coo in aProtective Bag. There is also aDress-Up Mask based on Rick, unlocked upon visitingMerry Magoland for the first time, and a gold statue of Rick, Kine, and Coo appears in Merry Magoland after completing 10missions, which seems to reuse the same pose of the original Animal Friends Stone transformation fromKirby's Return to Dream Land. | “ | Bright and friendly. Skilled at fighting on land. | ” | — Unofficial translation of Rick's description fromKirby: Save the Rainbow Islands! |
In theKirby novel series, Rick appears as a deuteragonist inKirby: Save the Rainbow Islands! together withCoo andKine. He is a resident of theRainbow Islands and one ofKirby'sAnimal Friends. Similarly to his gameStone transformation specifically, his main attack method consists in rolling into a rock and tackling an opponent.
InKirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!, he comes toDream Land withCoo andKine to ask Kirby to help find the cause of the drought on the Rainbow Islands. In their search, they findPirika, who indicates at an intruder in the clouds as the culprit. After receiving a good-luck charm in the form of apouch from his girlfriendPick, he sets off to the lake in the sky with the rest.
At the lake, they find their friendGooey, who dammed up the lake. Gooey attacks Pirika, so they retreat to regroup. After Kine and Kirby fail to enter the water to investigate for the potential mastermind, Pirika urges Rick to go, which he accepts quite reluctantly since he dislikes water. However, he too fails, as he is stopped by Gooey and thrown into atree, causing him to lose consciousness. Over this time, Pirika is revealed to have been the true mastermind behind the plan and uses the lake's water to controlKing Dedede andMeta Knight. AfterCoo wakes him andKine up, the three fight against their controlled friends, and then subdue them and Pirika in the pouch from Pick.
As they catch a break, Gooey tells his side of the story, explaining that he tried to prevent the contaminated water from pouring down over the Rainbow Islands, and Rick gratefully hugs their savior. Eventually King Dedede and Meta Knight break out of the pouch, so the Animal Friends continue the battle. However, it is cut short after Kirby inhales all the lake water. They find Kirby in great pain, but he recovers almost immediately. They then confront Pirika and have her explain her motives. Kirby, sympathetic after her story, offers to become her friend, and the rest follow queue. Her spell is broken, and the group engages in a friendly game of tag before heading back to the Rainbow Islands to celebrate the return of the rain.
