Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

In the opening cutscene ofKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Ribbon is seen frolicking with other fairies outside theRipple Star palace, but she is among the first to see Dark Matter engulfing the planet. She hurries to theQueen who sends her off with the crystal in order to avoid its capture by the invading force. Several fragments of Dark Matter pursue Ribbon well into space, where they succeed in shattering the crystal into many pieces, thus sending an unconscious Ribbon tumbling down toPop Star. There, she bumps intoKirby, who up until that point had been stargazing. After this fateful encounter, Kirby finds a piece of the crystal and merges it with the small remnant that Ribbon still had left. From there, Kirby agrees to help Ribbon find the rest of them and save her home world.
Ribbon accompanies Kirby and his other companions across the six main worlds, combining all the shards of the crystal that they find in the process. Once they return to Ripple Star, the reassembled crystal banishes Dark Matter from the planet, causing it to coalesce in space intoDark Star. Ribbon then helps Kirby battle the core of Dark Matter,0², by carrying him about inside the void where the battle takes place. Once Dark Matter is finally destroyed, during the award ceremony on Ripple Star, Ribbon gives Kirby a kiss on the cheek. This causes Kirby to blush and stumble, leading to him falling down the ceremony stairs.
During gameplay, Ribbon is not directly controllable in most cases. In regular platforming sections and boss fights, she only appears whenever Kirby collects a new Crystal Shard, so she can take it and combine it with the others. She becomes playable only during the battle with 0², as part of the Ribbon's Crystal ability, ferrying Kirby around in the arena while he uses the shooter against the boss.

Trivia[edit]
- According to the Japanese book20th Anniversary Kirby Pupupu Encyclopedia, Ribbon was originally namedKawashima, a Japanese name meaning "river island". She was conceived as a means of switching between the game's multiple playable characters. As this aspect was removed during development, her gameplay role became less prominent.
- Ribbon is sometimes referred to in Japanese as妖精リボン (Fairy Ribbon orRibbon the Fairy). OnKirby JP Twitter,Zan Partizanne nicknames Ribbonチビッコ妖精 (Rugrat Fairy).[1]
- The color of Ribbon's wings is inconsistent depending on her depiction. They are most commonly depicted as a subtly transparent purplish pink, with this being the color used in promotional artwork forKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, as well as most of her depictions starting withKirby Star Allies. They have also been depicted as a transparent blue (such as in the "Kirby Horoscope Collection" merchandise line), a more opaque white (such as her depictions inFind Kirby!! andKirby JP Twitter artwork), or more clear and colorless (such as her in-game model inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards) at various points in the series.
