A fairy from Ripple Star, Ribbon escapes the planet with the fairies' Crystal, only to fall victim to a Dark Matter ambush. When she loses control of the Crystal, she turns to Kirby for help.
— Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards instruction booklet (North America), page 22

Ribbon is a smallfairy fromRipple Star who made her debut inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards. She serves under her home planet'sQueen and watches over theCrystal - an object with the power to dispelDark Matter. She forms one part of theRibbon's Crystal ability, and is also paired up withAdeleine inKirby Star Allies. Since then, Ribbon has made only small cameo appearances in games such asSuper Kirby Clash andKirby's Dream Buffet. Ribbon is notably small, and yet has enough strength to pick up both Kirby and Adeleine while flying. She has messy pink hair with a red ribbon (after which she is named), a red dress, white pants, brown shoes (yellow inKirby 64), blue eyes, and rosy cheeks.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

Ribbon, as she appears inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards

In the opening cutscene ofKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Ribbon is seen frolicking with other fairies outside theRipple Star palace, but she is among the first to see Dark Matter engulfing the planet. She hurries to theQueen who sends her off with the crystal in order to avoid its capture by the invading force. Several fragments of Dark Matter pursue Ribbon well into space, where they succeed in shattering the crystal into many pieces, thus sending an unconscious Ribbon tumbling down toPop Star. There, she bumps intoKirby, who up until that point had been stargazing. After this fateful encounter, Kirby finds a piece of the crystal and merges it with the small remnant that Ribbon still had left. From there, Kirby agrees to help Ribbon find the rest of them and save her home world.

Ribbon accompanies Kirby and his other companions across the six main worlds, combining all the shards of the crystal that they find in the process. Once they return to Ripple Star, the reassembled crystal banishes Dark Matter from the planet, causing it to coalesce in space intoDark Star. Ribbon then helps Kirby battle the core of Dark Matter,, by carrying him about inside the void where the battle takes place. Once Dark Matter is finally destroyed, during the award ceremony on Ripple Star, Ribbon gives Kirby a kiss on the cheek. This causes Kirby to blush and stumble, leading to him falling down the ceremony stairs.

During gameplay, Ribbon is not directly controllable in most cases. In regular platforming sections and boss fights, she only appears whenever Kirby collects a new Crystal Shard, so she can take it and combine it with the others. She becomes playable only during the battle with 0², as part of the Ribbon's Crystal ability, ferrying Kirby around in the arena while he uses the shooter against the boss.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

InKirby: Planet Robobot, a raresticker representing Ribbon can be collected inOverload Ocean - Stage 4.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

In Version 3.0.0 and beyond ofKirby Star Allies, Ribbon pairs up with Adeleine as one of the game'sDream Friends. Shown here is the "title screen" for Adeleine & Ribbon's version ofGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go!.

InKirby Star Allies, Ribbon appears in twoCelebration Pictures: namely 'A Delicious Picnic' and 'Chasing Our Dreams'. She's also present in one ofStone's gold transformations, along withSusie.

Main article:Adeleine (Kirby Star Allies)

As of Version 3.0.0, Ribbon appears in-person along withAdeleine as aDream Friend (known collectively as 'Adeleine & Ribbon'), carrying Adeleine in the air so that she canhover and participating with Adeleine in some of her attacks.

Super Kirby Clash[edit]

InSuper Kirby Clash, Ribbon appears alongside Adeleine in theCastle Village after Team Kirby clears the Toughest:Pres. Parallel Susie Story Quest. She can be seen watching Adeleine, who is painting a picture on her canvas. She also appears alongside Adeleine as asticker.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

InKirby's Dream Buffet, Ribbon appears as part of the "Adeleine & Ribbon"costume for Kirby. The fact that she flaps her wings and blinks suggests that it is really her holding onto Kirby's hat, rather than just a prop. Ribbon also appears on aCharacter Treat, depicting her artwork fromKirby 64: The Crystal Shards.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, there are twoDress-Up Masks based on Ribbon. Completing card #06 in theStamp Rally unlocks the regular Ribbon mask, while completing 30missions unlocks a variation featuring a hair-buns style used by one of thefairies, known as "Ribbon (Friend's Hairstyle)". Wearing either mask replaces the wearer's voice with a crystal-like sparkling sound.

A gold statue ofAdeleine and Ribbon can also be unlocked inMerry Magoland provided the player has completed at least 30 missions.

Other appearances[edit]

Ribbon was set to appear in the canceledKirby Family, where she would have been one of the possible patterns for the sewing machine to reproduce.

Trivia[edit]

  • According to the Japanese book20th Anniversary Kirby Pupupu Encyclopedia, Ribbon was originally namedKawashima, a Japanese name meaning "river island". She was conceived as a means of switching between the game's multiple playable characters. As this aspect was removed during development, her gameplay role became less prominent.
  • Ribbon is sometimes referred to in Japanese as妖精リボン (Fairy Ribbon orRibbon the Fairy). OnKirby JP Twitter,Zan Partizanne nicknames Ribbonチビッコ妖精 (Rugrat Fairy).[1]
  • The color of Ribbon's wings is inconsistent depending on her depiction. They are most commonly depicted as a subtly transparent purplish pink, with this being the color used in promotional artwork forKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, as well as most of her depictions starting withKirby Star Allies. They have also been depicted as a transparent blue (such as in the "Kirby Horoscope Collection" merchandise line), a more opaque white (such as her depictions inFind Kirby!! andKirby JP Twitter artwork), or more clear and colorless (such as her in-game model inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards) at various points in the series.
