| “ | In order to defeat Dark Matter, you need the Rainbow Sword. It is said that the sword has something to do with the Rainbow Drops hiding on the islands. Will Kirby be able to save the Dream Land from Dark Matter? | ” | — Last Stage (vs. Dark Matter) section of theKirby's Dream Land 2 Instruction Booklet |
TheRainbow Sword is theLast Battle Ability ofKirby's Dream Land 2. It is required to defeat the evilDark Matter, the main villain of the game. Kirby obtains it automatically after defeatingKing Dedede if all theRainbow Drops hidden throughout the game have been recovered, which combine into the sword in a short cutscene.
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]

The Rainbow Sword first appeared inKirby's Dream Land 2, where it can only be used in the two-phase battle against Dark Matter, the final boss of the game, and is the only weapon that Kirby can use during the fight; likewise, Kirby cannot enter the battle without possessing the sword, instead being taken to a false ending if he defeats King Dedede and is unable to obtain it. Unlike many other weapons used in final battles throughout theKirby series, it does not shoot projectiles, but can instead be swung at the boss to cause a small amount of damage. The sword can also be used to reflect projectiles fired at Kirby if he uses it at the right moment, causing a significantly larger amount of damage to Dark Matter if he is hit by these projectiles than slashing at him would.
Once Dark Matter is defeated, Kirby briefly loses the sword as he drifts through space exhausted or unconscious, but picks it up again, using it to restore the rainbows connecting theRainbow Islands that Dark Matter had stolen.
Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]
InKirby: Planet Robobot, theDark Matter Clone wields a sword that occasionally emits a rainbow glow. This sword is materialized from Dark Matter's memories of the Rainbow Sword from back when he battled it inKirby's Dream Land 2. The reason he materialized the Rainbow Sword is because he feltMeta Knight's great power and materialized the power of the sword to counter him.[1]
Trivia[edit]
- SinceKirby's Dream Land 2 was developed for the black-and-whiteGame Boy, the Rainbow Sword doesn't actually appear rainbow-colored unless playing the enhancedSuper Game Boy version.
