— VS Pyribbit, Special Page fromKirby: Triple Deluxe

Pyribbit is aboss first confronted inKirby: Triple Deluxe. He is a massive ovaloid pyroclastic frog with a small tail who is often referred to as the "Volcano Lord". He resembles a giant horned toad, though he bears a crown and has no arms. His crown appears to be a smoldering caldera, out of which magma and igneous boulders can be spewed. He can also swim and survive in lava and breathe fire, along with having the ability to cause tremors and summon lava waves.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

Pyribbit is the boss ofKirby: Triple Deluxe's fifth Level,Endless Explosions, and is also battled inRoyal RoadStage 4 and inThe Arena.

Pyribbit makes his first appearance whenKirby enters the boss door of Endless Explosions. After he makes his way inside, Kirby sees the giant frog-like monster sleeping.Taranza then throws a rock at Pyribbit, waking him up. Kirby catches the rock in his hands as it bounces back at him. However, Pyribbit sees Kirby holding the rock and assumes he woke him from his slumber, and they face off. Notably, Pyribbit is the only boss in the game Taranza does not use his magic to create and/or empower.

Attacks[edit]

The following lists all of Pyribbit's attacks inStory Mode andThe Arena inKirby: Triple Deluxe. All attack names are taken from official Japanese strategy guides.

Pyribbit's attacks inKirby: Triple Deluxe
AttackDescription
フレイムリング
Flame Ring
Pyribbit charges up, then hops toward Kirby and unleashes a ring of fire that spreads across the ground, leaving a couple stars in the process.
捕食
Predation
Pyribbit dives into the lava, then he pops his head out and back in three times, getting closer each time. He finishes by shooting his tongue out at Kirby, which, if it hits, will cause Kirby to hit the screen and lose hisCopy Ability.
溶岩爆弾
Lava Bomb
Pyribbit jumps into the background, then spits out a large boulder at Kirby that can explode. The boulder can beinhaled with concerted effort, and swallowed for theFire ability. In the second phase, Pyribbit will shoot these from one of his pillars, and may shoot more than one at a time. If the boulders explode on the ground, they will leave lingering burning spots.
バウンドプレス
Bound Press
After performing an attack from the lava, Pyribbit can return by jumping high into the air, then landing after an extended period of time. He then starts bouncing between the foreground and background in a chaotic display that can be tough to avoid, leaving stars on his final landing. In the second phase, his ricochets become more numerous and chaotic.
Second phase only
マグマモンスター
Magma Monster
Pyribbit jumps to the volcano, and roars, summoning waves of lava with faces on it (resemblingMagman) which sweep toward the stage, covering most of it in the process. The waves leave stars after each pass. If Kirby is hit by the waves, he will be knocked into lava in the foreground for additional damage.
火炎放射
Flamethrower
Pyribbit charges up and releases a burning pillar of fire from his mouth that covers most of the stage and leaves stars on impact with the opposing wall of the stage. When fought in stage 4 of Royal Road, Pyribbit always begins phase 1 of the battle with this attack. In phase 2, Pyribbit might instead break thefourth wall by breathing fire at the screen, leaving a blackened char and making it hard for the player to see clearly, before spinning around while still breathing fire to try and hit Kirby. The fire breath can be crouched under.
火山岩攻撃
Volcanic Rock Attack
Pyribbit jumps into the volcano, causing it to erupt and fire him out along with four large boulders that then rain down onto the stage (either all four on the left side, all four on the right side, or two on both sides). Pyribbit lands wherever the volcanic rocks didn't afterwards and when he does, he leaves stars. He will then jump straight back into the volcano to try two more times.
ファウンテン オブ ファイア
Fountain of Fire
Pyribbit charges up and gushes lava out of his crown, creating streams that pour down on both sides of him. He then does two full rotations while moving left and right while the streams are still going, leaving stars when the streams dry out.

Pyribbit spends most of his time off the stage, which can make him difficult to hit. As such, his fight tends to last longer than the prior bosses' fights. In his second phase, Pyribbit summons four stone platforms out of the lava that float in the air, and a volcano in the background. These become fixtures for Pyribbit to perform more attacks from.

Upon defeat, Pyribbit gets knocked into the background lava pit, where he then surfaces and starts roaring. The pillars the boss summoned during his second phase then inexplicably fly in toward the crying toad and crash into him, burying him beneath the surface of the lava and destroying him. TheGrand Sun Stone then emerges from above for Kirby to collect. Pyribbit's defeat animation is reused for all of his future appearances when he is fought, and is shared with his stronger variants as well.

Pyribbit DX[edit]

Pyribbit DX, fromKirby: Triple Deluxe
King Dedede battles Pyribbit DX.
He quenches his thirst withboiling magma and snacks onmolten lava rocks. The mostunforgiving environments are comforting for Pyribbit.
— VS Pyribbit DX, Special Page fromKirby: Triple Deluxe

Pyribbit DX is a stronger version of Pyribbit who is fought inDededetour byKing Dedede and inThe True Arena byKirby. He has a green body, a pink mustache, and a green flame lit on his crown instead of a regular flame.

InDededetour, Pyribbit DX is angered whenKing Dedede trips and accidentally tosses his hammer into the giant toad's face.

The following lists all of Pyribbit DX's attacks in Dededetour and The True Arena inKirby: Triple Deluxe. All attack names are taken from official Japanese strategy guides.

Pyribbit DX dives into the lava, then he pops his head out and back in three times, getting closer each time. He finishes by shooting his tongue out at Kirby or Dedede, which, if it hits, will cause Kirby or Dedede to hit the screen and force the former to lose his Copy Ability. While in the background, Pyribbit DX breaks the fourth wall by breathing fire at the screen, leaving a blackened char and making it hard for the player to see clearly, then he spins around back and forth while still breathing fire to try and hit Kirby or Dedede. Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

A giant burning frog?! Quick - make it croak before it hops back into the volcano!
— British English Quest description from Team Kirby Clash

InKirby: Planet Robobot, Pyribbit appears as the fourth boss of theSub-GameTeam Kirby Clash. He fights in almost exactly the same manner as he did inKirby: Triple Deluxe, but hishealth is much greater to serve as a challenge for four Kirby warriors and some of his attacks have been altered slightly. More details on the specific attacks he uses can be found in theTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe &Super Kirby Clash section below.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe &Super Kirby Clash[edit]

Pyribbit as he appears inSuper Kirby Clash.
In the heart of a red-hotVolcano, the frog of flames,Pyribbit, leapt from the roiling magma. Team Kirby faced its fourthordeal!
— cutscene text fromSuper Kirby Clash

Pyribbit is encountered twice inTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe and four more times inSuper Kirby Clash. He fights faithfully to his originalKirby: Triple Deluxe incarnation in these fights, though some of his background moves have been toned down. He is exclusively fought in the Volcano region, where he can take advantage of the background props.

InTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe, Pyribbit serves as the third Ordeal in his first encounter, and inSuper Kirby Clash, he is the fourth Ordeal. Defeating him in the Ordeals of both games unlocks the Empyrean. InSuper Kirby Clash,Pyribbit EX can also be encountered. The main difference between Pyribbit DX and Pyribbit EX is that the crown and mustache on Pyribbit EX are both larger than Pyribbit DX's. Otherwise, both look almost identical.

Attacks[edit]

The following lists all of Pyribbit and Pyribbit EX's attacks inTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe andSuper Kirby Clash:

Pyribbit's attacks in theTeam Kirby Clash series
AttackDescription
フレイムリング
Flame Ring
Pyribbit charges up, then hops toward the middle of the arena and unleashes a ring of fire that spreads across the ground. The Tougher and Super rank quests have two rings of fire instead, with the second one spreading out shortly after the first one does.
捕食
Predation
Pyribbit dives into the lava, then he pops his head out and back in three times, getting closer each time. He finishes by shooting his tongue out at a pre-determined member of Team Kirby, which, if it hits, will cause that Kirby to be eaten. Pyribbit will then jump back on stage and start chewing, but will be left dazed if the eaten Kirby manages to escape. If the Kirby doesn't get out in time, Pyribbit will leap into the background and spit that Kirby back out in the foreground, dealing additional damage. During this attack, Pyribbit's tongue can be attacked by the Kirbys.
溶岩爆弾
Lava Bomb
Pyribbit jumps into the background, then spits out a number of large boulders at Team Kirby that can explode. The boulder can be destroyed in advance, though doing so also hurts the Kirby attacking it. In the second phase, Pyribbit will shoot these from one of his pillars. He may shoot one, two or four of these at a time; how many depends on the phase and the quest he's fought in. If the boulders explode on the ground, they will leave lingering burning spots.
バウンドプレス
Bound Press
After hopping into the lava, Pyribbit returns to the foreground by jumping high into the air, then landing after an extended period of time. He then starts bouncing between the foreground and background in a chaotic display that can be tough to avoid. In the second phase, his ricochets become more numerous and chaotic. During the Tougher and Super battles, he leaves behind lava puddles every time he lands.
マグマモンスター
Magma Monster
Pyribbit jumps to the volcano, and roars, summoning a wave of lava with faces on it (resemblingMagman) which sweep toward the stage, covering most of it in the process. Any Kirby hit by the wave will be knocked into lava in the foreground for additional damage. In the initial quests, one of three waves is randomly chosen (one where four lava pillars are in the center, one where two lava pillars are at the sides for four total, and one where the ground is covered with lava pillars necessitating hovering to dodge). In the Tougher and Super rank quests, the first two potential waves remain unchanged, with the lava pillars diving back into the lava before rising back up moments before covering the arena; the last one has the safe zone in the middle and the lava pillars moving back-and-forth as they slowly charge forward. Pyribbit EX summons two waves and will spit out Lava Bombs while the lava pillars from the second wave are still ongoing.
火炎放射
Flamethrower
Pyribbit charges up and releases a burning pillar of fire from his mouth that covers most of the stage. Pyribbit might instead break thefourth wall by breathing fire at the screen, leaving a blackened char and making it hard for the player to see clearly, then spinning around while still breathing fire to try and hit one of the Kirbys. The fire breath can be crouched under. Pyribbit EX's regular flame breath lasts for longer than normal.
火山岩攻撃
Volcanic Rock Attack
Pyribbit jumps into the volcano, causing it to erupt and fire him out along with four large boulders that then rain down onto the stage, either all four at the right side, all four at the the left side, or two on both sides. Pyribbit lands wherever the volcanic rocks don't afterwards and is dazed for a few seconds.
ファウンテン オブ ファイア
Fountain of Fire
Pyribbit charges up and gushes lava out of his crown, creating streams that pour down on both sides of him. He then does two or four full rotations while moving left and right while the streams are still going.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

InKirby Air Riders, Pyribbit appears as one of the choices for the crossroads atNeon Promenade in theRoad Trip mode. If chosen, Pyribbit inhales aDimension Meteor and releases a fountain of lava from his crown, allowing the rider to continue towardsFoundry Thoroughfare. He is also depicted on an Icon and Sticker used for the player'sLicense Card, which can be unlocked on the Road TripChecklist by clearing the objectives "Clear a stage without retrying" and "Play Road Trip for a total of 200 min." respectively.

Trivia[edit]

  • In terms of the way he looks, Pyribbit closely resemblesFatty Puffer fromKirby's Return to Dream Land. They also shoot pressurized liquids out of both of their mouths: Pyribbit uses fire in his case, while Fatty Puffer uses concentrated water. The later-introducedFiery Puffer even more closely resembles Pyribbit, and even has a similar Japanese name.
  • Discussing Pyribbit's design,Shinya Kumazaki stated that Pyribbit was created in part because—after having a notably tall boss inCoily Rattler—a more traditional, round, Kirby-shaped boss would help balance things out. Additionally, frogs and snakes are commonly associated with each other in Japanese tradition, though this isn't strictly the reason a frog was chosen. Whereas Coily Rattler uses the 3D space by slithering in and out from the background, Pyribbit uses it even more by hopping back and forth.[1]
  • Pyribbit is actually in the lava pool in the background of his arena when the rematch with him inRoyal Road starts and upon subsequent rematches in Endless Explosions, The Arena and The True Arena, making him the only boss in that game to change their starting location.
