Prediction Predicament - Part I is the 41st (38th in the 4Kids broadcast) episode of theKirby: Right Back at Ya! series. In this episode,King Dedede has a nightmare about a giant flamingKirby chasing him down, and goes toMabel to have his fortune read, but she uses her fortune to try to convince him to build a playground inCappy Town on a long-ignored request of theCappies. Refusing this, King Dedede resolves to try and stay awake overnight to avoid the same nightmare again, but fails, andTuff and Kirby take advantage of his fear of Kirby to scare him further. Meanwhile, afterTiff learns Mabel's trade secret fromSamo, she and Mabel head toCastle Dedede to discover the true source of Dedede's nightmare and find using the castle's observatorya distant asteroid that is heading towardDream Land. To try and deal with Kirby, King Dedede orders themonsterFridgy to attack him, but Kirby melts it using theFireCopy Ability. Dedede is then shown the asteroid - allowing him to put his paranoia aside - and Mabel explains it will be another thousand years before it arrives, butNight Mare Enterprises decides to speed the asteroid up. What happens from there is shown in the next episode:Prediction Predicament - Part II.

Plot synopsis[edit]
The episode begins one night atCastle Dedede.King Dedede is sleeping in his bedroom when a light shines through his window. King Dedede wakes and investigates only to find something resemblingKirby walking through the air toward him. As this Kirby-like figure gets closer, it grows larger, gains sharp teeth, and becomes surrounded by fire. King Dedede tries to get away from it, but it traps him against his locked bedroom door. In desperation, King Dedede swings his hammer wildly at it, when he wakes up realizing he whackedEscargoon in his sleep. After getting his bearings, King Dedede tells Escargoon about his nightmare. Later on, still reeling from his dream, King Dedede issues an order to his castle guards to not let Kirby attack him under any circumstances.Captain Waddle Doo steps up and tells King Dedede that Kirby is already in the castle playing with the kids, prompting Dedede to cower in fear. Meanwhile,Tuff is handing out lollipops to Kirby and the Cappy children. When Kirby gets his, he jumps in joy and accidentally drops it into the courtyard where it lands and sticks onto the back of King Dedede's robe. Kirby chases after it, making King Dedede believe that Kirby is indeed out to get him. As Dedede tries to run away, he passes byTiff and Escargoon and then crashes into a wall, and Kirby snatches the lollipop off his robe.
King Dedede becomes fed up, and decides to go intoCappy Town to get his dream "interperated" byMabel. As he enters town, however, King Dedede is blocked in the road by the assembledCappy villagers, who issue a long-standing request to him to build a park for the Cappy children. Dedede brushes them off and drives forward, prompting them to scatter. They watch as Dedede enters Mabel's parlor and wonder at his motives, andSamo nearly gives away a trade secret while commenting on it. Inside Mabel's establishment, King Dedede gets his fortune read. Mabel tells him that he is not being hunted by Kirby, but instead, by his long-repressed conscience. She insists that until he builds the Cappy children their playground, he will continue to be haunted. King Dedede outright rejects this fortune, and leaves without paying after declaring her a fraud to the town. Tiff, Tuff, and Kirby then show up and learn from Mabel what Dedede told her. This gives Tuff an idea to use Kirby to scare him and the two run back to the castle. Tiff meanwhile is worried about Mabel's reputation, and Samo appears to invite her into the bar so they can discuss the situation. After serving Tiff a fruit punch, Samo explains that Mabel is not really a fortune teller, and instead serves as the town's counselor. During the chat, Samo nearly reveals his hidden affection toward Mabel, but manages to change the subject.
Later that night at the castle, King Dedede endeavors to never sleep again so he can avoid having another nightmare about Kirby. Escargoon helps by giving him loads of coffee to drink, but despite this, King Dedede falls asleep almost immediately, and then proceeds to sleep-whack Escargoon with his hammer repeatedly. Meanwhile, Tuff, Kirby, andFololo & Falala prepare to scare him while Tiff, Samo, and Mabel try to divine the significance of Dedede's dreams. Mabel ends up spilling the beans about her and Samo's business relationship, and Tiff decides they should go to the castle to investigate directly instead. Once there, Tiff and Mabel stumble into an observatory and discover a giant telescope there. Mabel looks in through the eyepiece and discovers an ominousred star. Meanwhile, King Dedede falls asleep again and Escargoon decides to leave him to it in order to get out of potential whacking range.
Shortly after, Tuff and Kirby sneak in and Kirby uses a flashlight to shine a light on his own face in front of the snoozing King. When Dedede wakes and sees this, he runs screaming out of the room as the kids laugh at his paranoia. They continue to torment him with the flashlight as Dedede runs through the halls. In desperation, King Dedede callsNight Mare Enterprises and begs them to send him a monster that can put out fires. Through theMonster Delivery System comesFridgy; a woolly mammoth-like monster that can blow freezing blasts out of its trunk. The monster proceeds to crash through a wall and attack Kirby, shooting him repeatedly with ice and chilling him. Kirby tries toinhale the ice shots, but is unable to, and is knocked around the castle. As Fridgy inches closer,Meta Knight appears and offers Kirby a torch to inhale instead, which grants him theFireCopy Ability. Using this, Kirby fights back against Fridgy and overpowers it, causing the monster to melt into a puddle of water.
King Dedede is left to stare in horror at Fire Kirby and tries to run for it, but is stopped by Mabel, who explains that Kirby is not the monster from his dreams. Instead, she shows King Dedede to the observatory and shows him the bright red star through the telescope. She explains to him that the object is an asteroid that is heading directly toward Dream Land and may end up destroying the whole kingdom. Despite this ominous warning, King Dedede is relieved that Kirby is not the monster from his dreams, and decides to catch up on some sleep right then and there. Mabel then turns to the kids and reassures them that the asteroid will not actually arrive for another thousand years. However, seeing this asteroid,eNeMeE decides he'll speed the asteroid up so that it destroys Dream Land much sooner, and Kirby is left to monitor the red glow as it grows in size from a smaller telescope at the castle. The episode ends as the threat of the asteroid is established for the next episode:Prediction Predicament - Part II.
Differences between versions[edit]
- In the Japanese version, an extra scene exists while King Dedede andEscargoon are driving to Cappy Town, where Escargoon tries to ask Dedede why he is resorting to Mabel, only to get clobbered by Dedede's hammer while driving.
- The establishing shot of Samo's bar is half in length in the English dub.
- In the close up of Dedede in the cold open, his mouth moves about a quarter of a second earlier for lipsync purposes in the English dub.
- A commercial break is added after Fridgy crashes through the wall in the English dub.
Dialogue differences[edit]
- In the Japanese version, Samo's hints about his business relationship with Mabel are much more subtle.
- In the Japanese version, Mabel insists thePhantom Star Gerath will not actually hitDream Land, instead of saying it will a thousand years from then. Additionally, there is no overt implication thatNight Mare Enterprises is affecting the trajectory of the asteroid, and is instead merely observing its approach.
- The ending narration is not present in the Japanese version.
