— In-game tip fromKirby Star Allies

APower Effect[1] refers to the many different ways in which weapon-basedCopy Abilities can be enchanted inKirby Star Allies. These effects are similar to the variousAbility Scroll elemental combos whichKirby could perform inKirby: Squeak Squad, but are much broader in scope.

Elements and sources[edit]

There are five different types of effects which can be applied:Blizzard,Bluster,Sizzle,Splash, andZap. These elements are applied by having the ally wielding the weapon hold it up, then having the element-wielding ally use an elemental attack on the weapon to power it up. This effect then remains on the weapon indefinitely, only being lost if the ability is discarded and left to bounce as astar for a few seconds or the wielder is defeated (not just fainted). Tossing aFriend Heart at an elemental Ability Star before the element disappears will create the respectiveFriend with that element.

Applying an effect to a weapon allows the user to perform more elaborate attacks, and often adds special properties in addition to multiplying the damage by 1.25. One example is BlusterBomb, which allows the user to float up into the air while holding the bomb in hand.

The following table lists every known source for each effect, as well as the general characteristics of the element in question:

Elements inKirby Star Allies
ElementGranted byCharacteristicsEnemies weak to the element
Blizzard
  • Gives weapons an icy characteristic.
  • Allows them to freeze common enemies, waterfalls and douse flames.
  • Can combine withWater to perform the Friend AbilityIcicle Lance.
Fire-based:

Water-based:

Others:

Bluster
  • Gives weapons a windy characteristic.
  • Allows them to sweep away fallen leaves, activate fans, and douse flames.
  • Some of their moves can allow the wielder to become more floaty while attacking.
  • Can combine withFire to perform the Friend AbilityRising Sizzler.
Fire-based:

Others:

Sizzle
  • Gives weapons a fiery characteristic.
  • Allows them to light cannonfuses, meltice blocks and burn grass and fallen leaves.
  • Can meltFrancisca's Deadly Ice Candies to producefood.
Ice-based:

Flammable:

SplashElectric-based:

Fire-based:

Zap
  • Gives weapons an electric characteristic.
  • Allows them to electrify water surface and powerwires.
  • Can combine withWater to perform the Friend AbilityZap Splasher.
Water-based:

Paint-based attacks fromArtist,Adeleine & Ribbon have similar properties to the Splash effect (super effective on fire and electric) but do not grant Splash.

Stone has someFriend Abilities that grant it temporary elemental powers, albeit not a weapon-based ability. TheCurling Friend Abilities have their respective element,Geokinesis withESP grants it the Zap effect, andRock Painter withArtist/Adeleine & Ribbon covers the stone sculpture with paint.

List of augmentable weapons[edit]

Kirby acquires the Zap effect on hisYo-Yo.

The following Copy Abilities and allies can receive elemental powers:

Friend Star / Star Allies Sparkler[edit]

TheFriend Star and theStar Allies Sparkler fire elemental bullets based on the rider's default attack and are indicated by the icon's color on the dashboard as well as the color of the Friend Star itself. Besides the five elements aforementioned, some abilities/allies have their own variants:

Weapon wielders will still fire their default bullets even with an element granted beforehand. Elemental shots are slightly more powerful than no-element/"plain" shots.

Inthe final battle,Void Termina's elemental effects during his Demon God Form (Phase 1) and Angel Form (Phase 3) can be negated by the respective weakness bullets from the Star Allies Sparkler, e.g. Void Termina's Blizzard Sword icicles can be destroyed by Sizzle bullets.

Other appearances[edit]

  • InKirby's Dream Buffet, Sizzle Yo-Yo, Blizzard Sword Blade Knight, Bluster Bomb Poppy Bros. Jr., and Zap Hammer Bonkers each appear onCharacter Treats using theirKirby Star Allies artwork.

Trivia[edit]

  • InKirby Star Allies, theHammer ability'sHammer Flip lost its fire element from previous games, presumably since it would be redundant with Sizzle Hammer.
  • TheBomb ability no longer has a fire effect as ofKirby's Return to Dream Land, so Sizzle Bomb is new to the series (Thunder Bomb andIce Bomb had previously appeared inKirby: Squeak Squad).
  • The allies that have the most elements areRick & Kine & Coo andThe Three Mage-Sisters, with four out of five each; Rick & Kine & Coo can't provide Zap, while the Three Mage-Sisters can't provide Bluster.
    • Of the four elements Rick & Kine & Coo can provide, however, Blizzard can be given to allies only when on the surface of water.
  • If a projectile fromCutter,Bomb, orMarx makes contact with an elemental attack, that projectile will gain the elemental properties, but the user won't receive the element in this way.
