- This article is about the item type inKirby Air Ride. For the stage-unlocking patches from Kirby's Epic Yarn, seeArea Patch.
Patches (also known aspower-ups) areitems that appear inKirby Air Ride andKirby Air Riders. A Patch increments a machine's stat, such as gliding or acceleration, by 1 point. In the first portion ofCity Trial, many Patches can be found by exploring the City orSkyah, and can be lost by either collecting gray-colored patches or taking damage. Once theStadium event begins, stats are fixed and it is no longer possible to steal Patches by damaging opponents.
InRoad Trip, Patches are obtained gradually and are permanent. In both modes, collecting many Patches and increasing the machine's stats in a balanced way are necessary to remain competitive with opposing riders and clear challenges, though many smaller differences exist in Patches' functionality between games and modes.
There are three similar types of items found in green boxes that boost a machine's stats, but only for a limited amount of time: theAttack Up,Defense Up andSpeed Up.

Overview[edit]
Kirby Air Ride[edit]
InKirby Air Ride, Patches are exclusive toCity Trial. Each one collected will improve one of the 9 stats by one point. They can be found almost anywhere around the City, or by breaking a bluebox. Some Patches are hidden in destructible objects, such as the dilapidated houses, or the star at the top of a green spire. Blue boxes can contain up to four Power-Ups or "Power-Downs," which are gray Patches that decrement machine abilities instead. Racers can also steal Patches when attacking opponents (specifically HP if the opponent has acquired no Patches).
Most Power-Up points can have a maximum of 18 or a minimum of -14, viewable in the City Trial results (or the "Pause Screen Power-Ups" if this feature is unlocked through completingthe specific task in City Trial's Checklist). HP Power-Up points have a maximum of 16 and cannot fall below 0.
Whenever Kirby changes machines in City Trial, he will automatically drop a portion of his collected patches and will need to pick them up again before they disappear or are stolen. The number/type of patches dropped is proportional to the number of patches he has collected prior to mounting a new machine. This can be avoided if Kirby jumps and lands on top of a machine, causing him to ride the machine and keep all his patches. If a sufficiently large number of patches were collected prior to mounting a new machine, Kirby may drop an All-Up Patch, even if he had never collected one in that game.
It is possible to bump intoFake Patches, which closely resemble real Patches. These Fake Patches do a variety of damage to a machine that runs into it. However, Fake Patches appear only in one event, if events are turned on.
In this game, a high number of patches is indicated by Kirby and the machine flashing the color of the highest-color patch (e.g., yellow for Charge, green for Turn). The flashing starts at roughly 5 collected, and will become brighter and more visible as more are collected.
Kirby Air Riders[edit]
InKirby Air Riders, Patches reappear in City Trial and are also representative of rider progression in the Road Trip mode.
In City Trial, Patches inherit most of their prior properties, and are found in large quantities in Skyah, and in blue boxes as before, although there are some changes. The number of stray Patches will increase in quantity proportional to the amount of time left for a City Trial match, meaning that Patches are significantly more abundant in shorter games. Some of the Patches dropped by blue boxes will be given instantly (without needing to be picked up), and they no longer contain gray Patches. The Fake Patches event is no longer present.
Riders will still drop patches while being damaged, depending on the damage taken. When damaging or destroying rivals' machines, a portion of the patches will be given instantly, regardless of distance. Patches are no longer dropped when boarding a new machine.
Patches can also be rewarded by doing various activities; The floating green dash rings will reward 1-2 patches when flying through them. Destroying the cave's crystals (or stones), the ruined walls by the coliseum, and the pink coral that occasionally appears on the beach will frequently drop patches, whereas destroying the trees byWhispy Woods, the single rock by the volcano, or vacant Air Ride Machines will rarely drop patches. Many Field Events can reward patches if conditions are met, or can increase the number of patches that appear.
Patches that spawn on the garden in the sky or on the distant sky islands will never despawn over the course of the match, meaning a large number of Patches can accumulate if nobody has collected them in a while.
Machine stats can now increase to a maximum of 19 points. AChecklist objective requires increasing all stats to 12 in a single play session.
In this game, a high number of collected Patches is indicated by a visual effect that appears when the patched stat is activated. These effects are not visible to other players. Effects will generally begin to appear at 9-12 Patches collected, though this varies by machine and rider. The effects are as follows;
- Boost: purple speed lines appear whenever the machine is accelerating or Boost Dashing.
- Top Speed: a light blue/white speed effect will surround the machine whenever it is moving fast enough
- Turn: a revolving green effect will rotate in front of the machine as it turns.
- Charge: a yellow electrical effect appears whenever the machine is Charging.
- Glide; white feathers will be left behind as the machine is Gliding.
- Weight; a brown falling effect will appear at the bottom of the screen whenever the machine takes flight or gets a perfect landing.
- Offense; an orange rising effect will surround the machine when using a Quick Spin, a Boost Dash, or a rider/machine's attack.
- Defense; blue hexagonal particles will surround the machine when taking damage.
- HP; there is no visual effect, though the HP bar increases with each patch.
Road Trip[edit]
In Road Trip, Patches are obtained each time a challenge is cleared. Tougher challenges yield more Patches. They correspond to a rider's level, which is the sum of all of their stats. Patches may also be bought from the shop, found in Treasure Boxes, or Burning Carts.
The scale of stats is different in Road Trip compared to City Trial, and individual Patches boost machine abilities to a lesser degree in this mode. The total of each machine ability can reach up to 99, and there is a Checklist tile can be cleared by achieving at least 27 in each stat.
When a New Game + is started, all Patches from the original file are lost, and the rider returns to level 1. Otherwise, stats received from Patches in Road Trip are permanent.
List of Patches[edit]
Below is a table that includes all possible Patches which provide a lasting enhancement to one or more stats:
| Picture | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Boost Patch | Increases the machine's boosting power after a charge-up and prevents sliding during a charge. Also increases acceleration (The Japanese term for the Boost stat is actually カソクacceleration). | |
| Top Speed Patch | Increases the machine's top speed. May be a detriment if too many are collected. | |
| Turn Patch | Increases the machine's handling. May be a detriment if too many are collected. | |
| Charge Patch | Increases the machine's charging rate, allowing it to build up boost power faster. | |
| Glide Patch | Increases the machine's gliding capabilities. Increases the jump height of machines which cannot glide. Also increases damage taken.[1] | |
| Weight Patch | Increases the machine's weight, preventing the machine from levitating upwards. Also helps the machine fare better during collisions, slightly improves speed, and reduces damage taken.[1] | |
| Offense Patch | Increases the machine's offensive capabilities, which includes collision damage,Quick Spin, and damage output of items and abilities. | |
| Defense Patch | Increases the machine's defensive capabilities, reducing all forms of damage taken. | |
| HP Patch | Increases the machine's HP level. There is no fake, or gray, version of this Patch. Any HP Patches found in blue boxes is just one Patch instead of 2 or more, unless an event occurs. | |
| All Up Patch | Increases all the machine's abilities by 1 point. This rare Patch is usually found in events such as the UFO, or very rarely in blue boxes, or simply appearing. There are no fake or gray versions of this Patch. This patch cycles through all the colors of the other patches, rather than having any one specific color. These Patches appear normally (by appearing or being found in blue boxes) more often when the player playsStadium:VS. King Dedede, but they are still rare. |
Trivia[edit]
- InKirby Air Ride, the internal points for stats actually range from -16 to 16. In City Trial, all stats except for HP start at -2 and display 2 higher than their real value (a stat of 1 is displayed as 3), which explains why they range from -14 to 18 in-game. InAir Ride and City Trial's Stadium/Free Run mode, this does not apply. As such, vehicles are actually slightly weaker in City Trial's main mode than in other modes.[1]
