Parasol
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||
- This article is about theCopy Ability. For the enemy object, seeParasol (enemy).
Parasol is aCopy Ability that equipsKirby with a parasol (umbrella) to use as a weapon. Contrary to what might be expected, the Parasol is a formidable tool when in Kirby's hands. He can swing it to strike enemies with the same force as aSword, and use it to shield himself from incoming projectiles ahead or above him. Additional techniques include the very fast and dangerous Parasol Drill and Dive, and the famous Circus Throw technique, where he picks an enemy up and spins it on his parasol before tossing it away. Kirby can also use his Parasol to splash water on fiery blocks and foes to douse them. When not attacking with it, Kirby can use the parasol to glide through the air, drifting slowly downward while gaining increased horizontal velocity. Lastly, Parasol is one of the abilities that can usually be used underwater.
Parasol is typically obtained by swallowing theParasol often held byWaddle Dees andWaddle Doos, but there are a small number of more specialized enemies that provide it, includingFloaty the Drifter,Jumper Shoot,Sasuke, andKlinko. Parasol is one of the only modern Copy Abilities which does not grant Kirby a hat or any additional costume piece.
Overview[edit]

Parasol is one of Kirby's simpler and yet more versatile abilities. Its primary attribute is the ability for Kirby to shield himself from attacks from above (even whenhovering), and the ability to float gently downward in the air. Some games employ wind currents which can influence Kirby's trajectory when he is drifting on his Parasol, even carrying him upward in some cases. It is also one of the few abilities which can be usedunderwater, though its utility there is more limited. Starting inKirby Super Star, Parasol would gain more of its signature properties, including its specialguard, its drill attack, and its Circus Throw technique.
Starting inKirby Super Star, but not becoming prominent untilKirby's Return to Dream Land, Parasol would gain a distinct watery property, as Kirby will now throw water drops off the Parasol when he swings it which can douse flames and cool lava blocks. This increased reach also makes it possible for Parasol Kirby to consistently hit enemies and objects through walls, though not with as much reach as other abilities likeYo-Yo orWhip. The watery properties of Parasol also allow Kirby to grant the SplashPower Effect to his allies inKirby Star Allies.
Although Parasol is one of the most frequently-reoccurring abilities in the series, it does have a few noteworthy absences in the main series, those beingKirby 64: The Crystal Shards andKirby and the Forgotten Land; however, inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Kirby can float down slowly by holding onto aBumber, achieving a similar effect to that of the Parasol ability.
Appearance[edit]
As mentioned previously, Parasol is one of the few Copy Abilities to appear in modern games and not have a hat. Nonetheless, it gives Kirby a red and white parasol in most of its appearances, with a few exceptions in some sprites of earlier games. Early designs of the parasol did not include a star on its top, and featured round tips at the end of each of its ribs. InKirby Super Star, the parasol was redesigned to have a star on the top, and the round tips were removed, but this design only became a standard around the time ofKirby: Right Back at Ya! andKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Ever since, the design has been more-or-less consistent, with the most variance being in the color of its handle, which has been white, green, and is most commonly depicted as blue in recent games.

Kirby's Adventure /Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

Parasol makes its first appearance as a Copy Ability inKirby's Adventure, and also appears inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Here, its essential properties of being used as a bludgeon, shielding Kirby from hazards above him, and being used to float slowly downward were established. This makes it one of the more versatile abilities in the game. It is only provided byParasol Waddle Dee andParasol Waddle Doo. InKirby's Adventure Parasol deals 6 damage when attacking[1] but only 5 inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.[2] In both games it deals 2 damage when idle.
Kirby's Dream Course[edit]

The Parasol ability appears inKirby's Dream Course, where it can be obtained from Parasol Waddle Doo. While using the ability, Kirby floats through the air using the Parasol, and can gently be steered toward the ground for a more precise landing. How quickly Kirby drifts laterally through the air depends on how fast he was going when he activated the ability. This can also be used to brake Kirby's momentum while rolling on the ground.
Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]
Parasol reappears inKirby's Dream Land 2. Kirby acquires this ability fromJumper Shoot andFloaty the Drifter. By itself, this ability performs similar to the one inKirby's Adventure.
When on anAnimal Friend, however, Kirby can perform variations of the ability, as detailed in the following table:
| Animal Friend | Appearance | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Coo | Coo equips a Parasol and starts spinning rapidly, similar to theTornado ability. | |
| Kine | A large parasol appears from Kine's mouth, which can be used as a shield for a limited time. | |
| Rick | Rick balances a parasol on his nose and a ball-shaped Kirby on top of it, harming enemies above him. |
ThroughoutKirby's Dream Land 2, there are specific blocks which can be broken only with the Parasol ability. They resemble puffy clouds.
Kirby Super Star /Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

Parasol returns as an ability inKirby Super Star andKirby Super Star Ultra, where it is once again obtained by swallowing an enemy Parasol. However, it can also be received viaCopy Essence Deluxe inMilky Way Wishes and through regularCopy Essences. With the Parasol equipped, Kirby can create aParasol Waddle Dee as aHelper. This game introduced some of the more elaborate attacks that Parasol has become known for, such as Parasol Drill and Circus Throw. This game also introduced Parasol's ability to douse flames by splashing water on them.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]

Parasol makes another appearance inKirby's Dream Land 3. It functions similarly to its previous appearance inKirby's Dream Land 2, and can be acquired fromSasuke,Klinko,Jumper Shoot and the parasol variant ofBukiset. When Kirby orGooey try tocrouch with this ability, instead of crouching, they put their parasols in front of them similar to aguard, which deals damage to enemies and provides cover of any incoming projectile. Their backs aren't covered, however, so any attack coming from behind will hurt them as usual. Unlike in other games, Parasol does not have an automatic drift when falling, it is instead triggered by pressing the + Control Pad up while falling.
While this defensive technique isn't available when paired with Animal Friends, being paired with them creates Parasol-related abilities, as follows:
| Animal Friend | Appearance | Description |
|---|---|---|
| ChuChu | Kirby and ChuChu get inside an up-side-down parasol and spin forward, defeating enemies on contact. | |
| Coo | Coo equips a Parasol and starts spinning rapidly, similar to theTornado ability. | |
| Kine | Kine turns to face upwards as a large parasol appears from his mouth, which guards him against attacks from above and slows his fall. | |
| Nago | Kirby and Nago use a parasol as a pogo stick, bouncing around on it and defeated adversaries while the Y button is held. | |
| Pitch | Using a parasol like a golf club, Kirby knocks Pitch away, causing him to bounce around like a ball and destroy enemies he touches. Holding Y for longer will send Pitch at a higher angle. He returns to Kirby once he stops moving or the Y button is pressed; moving just right while he is doing so can cause him to orbit Kirby. | |
| Rick | Rick balances a parasol on his nose and a ball-shaped Kirby on top of it, harming enemies above him. |
ThroughoutKirby's Dream Land 3, there are specific blocks which can be broken only with the Parasol ability. They are marked with the Parasol icon on them.
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror &Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]

Parasol returns inKirby & The Amazing Mirror, unchanged from its appearance inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. It is once again acquired by swallowing an enemy Parasol.
InKirby: Squeak Squad, anAbility Scroll can be collected for Parasol which allows Kirby to make his Parasol Shield bigger, turning it into the "Super Parasol Shield" (スーパーパラソルシールド[3]), by firing small stars if he holds it for an extended time.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]
Parasol returns inKirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake,Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, where it first gained its modern moveset. It is provided byParasol Waddle Dee andParasol Waddle Doo.

In theSub-GameNew Challenge Stages, Parasol gainsits own challenge room, accessible from Happiness Hall. It can also be used to raceMagolor.
Kirby: Triple Deluxe,Kirby: Planet Robobot, &Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Parasol returns inKirby: Triple Deluxe, largely unchanged from its appearance inKirby's Return to Dream Land; however, it's been given one change in this game onwards. Specifically, the animation of Parasol Swing more closely resembles its animation fromKirby Super Star, granting it a hitbox behind Kirby after he winds back the parasol. In addition to its role in the main game, Parasol is a selectable ability in theKirby FightersSub-Game.
InKirby: Planet Robobot, Parasol can be combined with theRobobot Armor to produce the armor'sParasol Mode. This mode allows the suit to fly great distances using parasol-shaped rotors and dispel clouds of poison gas.
InKirby Star Allies, Parasol can be used to imbue other abilities with the SplashPower Effect. It can also be used to activateChumbrella, being one of the fewFriend Abilities which does not require help from any friends.Parasol Waddle Dee acts as theFriend for the Parasol ability, and can use all of the same moves as Parasol Kirby.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe andKirby Fighters 2[edit]
Parasol appears inKirby Fighters Deluxe andKirby Fighters 2 as a selectable ability for Kirby, retaining its moveset fromKirby: Triple Deluxe, though lacking its underwater moves (due to there being no water in either game). InKirby Fighters 2, it is unlocked after reachingFighters Rank 31. Parasol Kirby also comes with a coupleRare Outfits: the first is the Paper Parasol, available in both games, and the second is theSectonian Queen's Parasol, available only inKirby Fighters 2.

Trivia[edit]
- InKirby's Pinball Land, a Kirby holding an umbrella does appear on theKracko Land board, pulling it out whenNimbus rains on him, helping Kirby get to the upper portion of the board. Despite the striking similarity, this is not Parasol, and the manual just refers to it as "Big Kirby (with Umbrella)".[4]
