| “ | Welcome to Dream Land, a kingdom famous for peace and quiet. | ” | — Narrator, from the opening cutscene ofKirby's Epic Yarn |

Thenarrator is a character or entity responsible for telling the story, usually defined as a disembodied voice or source of text. Depending on the story being told, the narrator may be a character within the narrative or anexternal source of expository information. In theKirby series, narration sometimes appears in the form of a few lines of text incutscenes that explain the proceedings.Kirby games tend to use narration sparingly, if at all, and the text is usually focused specifically on the motives and feelings of the characters without going into too much detail about setting.
Examples by game[edit]
The followingKirby games use narration for the purposes of storytelling. For the sake of brevity, text meant to explain the game rules and mechanics and flavor text such as pause screen descriptions will not be covered here, even if it is written in a narrator-like fashion. Character dialogue within cutscenes will also not be counted, unless it is accompanied by narration.
Kirby's Adventure /Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]
The first example of in-game narration in the series occurs inKirby's Adventure. While this game established the now-standard ending narration format for the series, it also uniquely features an opening narration found by waiting on the title screen. The opening text explains the game's backstory, while the ending text explainsNightmare's motive, as well as justifyingKing Dedede's actions before wrapping everything up. The text varies between the original game and the remake,Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land; the3D Classics version also has minor text revisions from the original, though not as significant.

Kirby's Dream Course[edit]

Kirby's Avalanche[edit]
Most of the story ofKirby's Avalanche is handled through character dialogue. However, there is one piece of external narration that is used at the very end, after Kirby defeats King Dedede. It reads:"Congratulations! You win!! Kirby is the Avalanche Champion!!!"
Kirby Super Star /Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]
Narration did not appear again within the series untilKirby Super Star. This game features limited narration for some cutscenes within the game, though all others go completely without narration. Once again, the dialogue differs somewhat between the original game and the remake,Kirby Super Star Ultra.
A narrator also appears as part of theComputer Virus boss, but because of the nature of the boss, it can be considered an in-universe part of the fight rather than external narration.
Kirby's Star Stacker (Super Famicom)[edit]
The Super Famicom version ofKirby's Star Stacker features text narration in its opening cutscene, much likeKirby's Dream Course. However, since the game was formally released only in Japan, no official English version of this narration exists.

Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble[edit]

There, a traveler named Magolor built an amusement park where he could entertain his friends.
It was a merry place where four friends could enjoy attractions and collect souvenirs together.
It was a park full of excitement, where dreams could come to life. It was a place called...Magoland!
Kirby Air Riders[edit]
TheRoad Trip mode inKirby Air Riders features vocal narration in the opening and all memory cutscenes. Just like the announcer heard in gameplay, the player is able to select from a variety of voices for the narrator.
| Narrator's transcript for Road Trip inKirby Air Riders | |
|---|---|
| Road Trip | From out of the sky, Air Ride machines rained down like shooting stars! They were found in all shapes and sizes but with no ability to move on their own. However, if someone touched them and shared their will, the engines sprang to life, and they were able to move with incredible speed. These individuals were called riders. Soon vehicle and rider pairs were a common sight, partnering up for everyday travel as well as thrilling races. One day, some riders noticed their vehicles were acting strange. They were looking somewhere far away. If you wish to go there, let's go! But what awaits these riders and machines at the end of their journey toward the unknown? |
| Ch. 1: Zorah, Cosmic Drifter | Zorah. A living machine. Possessing its own will but unable to move on its own. Long ago, it drifted through the universe until falling upon a remote region of the planet Popstar. |
| Ch. 2: Surrendering to Time | Zorah crash-landed within a barren, isolated region of Popstar. Unable to move itself, Zorah could only surrender to the passage of time. No visitors. No contact at all. It remained trapped in place for what felt like an eternity. |
| Ch. 3: A Wish for Freedom | Zorah became a part of the land itself, yet it remained conscious. Throughout an eternity of immobility, Zorah wished for only one thing: to be free and to roam wherever it pleased. Eventually Zorah's wish reached the distant Fountain of Dreams. The fountain presides over dreams of all kinds, and through this power, Zorah's wish flowed much farther. That's how the wish reached Galactic Nova, a satellite that orbited Popstar. Much like Zorah, Nova was alive. |
| Ch. 4: Creation of the Machines | Deep within Galactic Nova, manufacturing was underway. Embodying Zorah's wish for freedom and movement, advanced technology created mobile machines. They were made in all shapes and sizes. Once complete, Nova released these countless vehicles, and they rained down upon Popstar like shooting stars. |
| Ch. 5: Rider and Machine as One | When the vehicles fell to Popstar, many crumbled to ruin at the moment of impact, but some survived and encountered potential riders. The vehicles could not activate themselves but sprang to life once a rider shared their will. Once paired, vehicles and riders became close partners. Air Ride machines eventually became a common sight and an indispensable part of their riders' lives. |
| Ch. 6: Zorah, Torn to Pieces | Galactic Nova's wish-granting work was not done. With the vehicles now complete, Nova turned to Zorah, delivering worker drones and materials. The swarm of drones bored into Zorah, ripping holes open and tearing it to pieces. The vehicles were built for Zorah, and now Zorah was rebuilt as a monstrous vehicle: Gigantes. Gigantes was a weapon capable of destroying all life on the planet, and in its core, Zorah's will was trapped once again. |
| Ch. 7: A Call to All Machines | Like the Air Ride machines, Gigantes was unable to move itself. An incredible amount of willpower was required to activate this dreadnought-sized vehicle. If enough of Nova's vehicles brought their strong-willed riders together, their wills would form a spark of ignition, and Gigantes would spring to life. Nova had a plan to make vehicles and riders gather before Gigantes on their own. Through a quiet transmission, Nova commanded its vehicles all over the world: "Return to your true origin." |
| Ch. 8: The Trip Begins | Most vehicles and riders failed to notice Nova's command, but they were weak of will and not the desired target. Only a handful of keen vehicles and riders could sense the command at all. Without apparent reason or purpose, each pair began a journey toward Gigantes. Instinctively, the vehicles were returning to their true point of origin: Zorah. Doing so would activate Gigantes and destroy all of Popstar. Vehicles from all over rushed toward Zorah, who awaited them at their journeys' end. |
| Ch. 9: Noir, Battling in Secret | Just before Gigantes was fully constructed, a fragment of Zorah's will broke free. Copying the form of a certain rider, "Noir Dedede" took off. Zorah's wish to roam freely had finally come true... but this was no time to celebrate its granted wish. If Gigantes were activated, the planet would perish. Noir Dedede destroyed each vehicle that tried to return to Zorah, struggling in secret to prevent disaster. It would not stop until its battle was won. |

Trivia[edit]
- Part of the narration for the final scene inTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe specifically references the end narration forKirby & The Amazing Mirror by copying the final lines almost word-for-word. The reference is made more obvious in the Spanish translations, as the entire narration is copied almost word-for-word fromKirby & The Amazing Mirror with a few tweaks.
- Likewise, the final scene narration forSuper Kirby Clash references the end narration forKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, though only the Japanese version does so directly.
