| “ | Shrink down to tiny size so you can fit through tight passageways. | ” | — Kirby & The Amazing Mirror flavor text |
Mini is aCopy Ability only available inKirby & The Amazing Mirror which causesKirby to shrink down to a smaller size, allowing him to fit through tight passageways. It is among the rarest abilities in the game, only being obtainable fromMinny, an enemy primarily found inMustard Mountain in very small numbers. Unlike most other abilities, it is not part of theability roulette triggered by swallowing two ability-yielding enemies at once and cannot be found as aCopy Essence in the ability room unlocked after pressing everyBig Switch.
So far, Mini has only appeared as a proper Copy Ability inKirby & The Amazing Mirror (though an unused version can be found in the data ofKirby's Adventure). Mini Kirby's last appearance was inKirby: Triple Deluxe, where akeychain of his sprite could be collected. Appropriately, this is the smallest keychain in that game.
Characteristics[edit]

Mini is a unique ability in that it does not grant Kirby any new ways of attacking, but instead causes him to shrink to roughly 1/4 his normal size for as long as he possesses it, enabling him to walk through passages that were previously inaccessible. However, it also disables all of Kirby's powers, other than walking, jumping, dashing andcrouching, while it lasts; this means that Kirby cannothover, slide, inhale or use hisCell Phone while in Mini form. As such, Mini cannot be used to effectively battle enemies.
Like other Copy Abilities, Mini is lost when Kirby is hurt or drops it with the Select button; as soon as he loses the ability, he grows back to his normal size, and regains his basic powers, but may shrink once more by inhaling and swallowing the bouncingAbility Star. If Kirby is in a space that he would not fit into at his usual size, however, he cannot willfully drop the ability, and getting hit in such a position causes him to getcrushed. The ability also disappears entirely if Kirby leaves the room in which he acquired it, leaving not even an Ability Star behind.
In theKirby novel series[edit]

In theKirby novel series, the Mini ability appears inKirby's Labyrinth Rescue!, whereKirby accidentally inhales a Minny while eating an apple, causing him to mistakenly copy the Mini ability from it. Due to Kirby's small size, he gets picked up byKing Dedede who blows Mini Kirby away with his nose. After being blown away into a tree, Mini Kirby finds a small hole in the roots of the tree. He is easily able to fit inside the hole because of his miniature size which helps him find aMirror inside of a cave. Once Kirby enters the Mirror, he loses the ability and returns to normal.
Near the end of the novel, during the battle againstMagolor,Waddle Dee gives Kirby a Minny so he can get the Mini ability once more. This time, Kirby uses his small size to avoid detection from the manipulative mage and put himself in a position so he can easily deal the finishing blow with adifferent copy ability also provided by Waddle Dee.
Trivia[edit]

- Mini was originally intended to be a Copy Ability forKirby's Adventure,[1] and the full sprites of this unused ability can be found in the game ROM. Unlike inKirby & The Amazing Mirror, Mini Kirby was supposed to be able toslide inKirby's Adventure.[2]
- Mini is one of the few copy abilities which does not give Kirby a hat or costume of any kind when acquired. In this case however, the drastic change in Kirby's size is more than enough to distinguish it from other abilities.
- While Mini does not appear inKirby: Squeak Squad as a Copy Ability,Magic Kirby'sidle animation features a miniature Kirby popping out of Kirby's top hat, which uses the same sprites as the Mini ability.
