Mike
| ||||||||||||||||||||||
| ||||||||||||||||||||||
- This article is about the Copy Ability. For the item, seeMike (item).
Mike is aCopy Ability that allows the user to defeat their opponents by shouting at them through a microphone (early games suggest thatKirby is just trying to sing when he uses the ability, but his singing is so poor that enemies are defeated through irritation or laughter). When obtaining this ability, the user gains a pair of red and yellow headphones with star insignia, though the hat changes while using each shout (a white baseball cap for the first, the headphones for the second, and a green spiky mohawk for the last). Typically, the user is allowed to use this ability up to three times, with each shout being different in character and dealing a different amount of damage (though for the vast majority of normal enemies, each shout may as well defeat them in one hit). After the user uses the last shout, the ability is lost. Mike can typically be obtained by swallowingWalky orMr. Tick-Tock, though a few more obscure sources for the ability exist.
Mike or Kirby with headphones is also often depicted inJukeboxes of various games, including some in which it doesn't make an appearance as a Copy Ability proper. In particular,Kirby's Dream Land andKirby's Adventure depictions precede the introduction of the headphones as a hat for Mike.
InKirby's Dream Land and some other games, the microphone isan item that playable characters can use, making them shout into the microphone and defeat or damage all enemies within range.
Characteristics[edit]
While a limited use ability likeCrash, Mike's defining characteristic is being a three-use ability, rather than one-use like other similar abilities (with the only exceptions beingKirby Air Ride andKirby Air Riders, where it can only be used once). Each use of the ability is visually different, featuring different microphones, and is stronger in each use in most games. In early games, the range of each attack is the same, and covers all enemies on screen, but starting withKirby's Return to Dream Land, the range of the first two Mike charges was reduced to a cone in front of the user, and the third charge a sphere around them that covers most of the screen. That same game also introduced the ability to charge the third and last Mike attack to deal more damage.
Appearance[edit]
Mike gained three different hats inKirby Super Star, one for each charge, that only appear when they are triggered. The first charge gives the user a baseball cap, the second headphones, and the third a spiky mohawk. Neither of these three hats received any major redesigns ever since, although all have gained minor variations in subsequent appearances. The baseball cap has always been white, and has featured a star in the front sinceKirby Super Star Ultra, which is orange in that game, but golden in games after. The cap's visor has been either dark gray and dark blue, depending on the game. The headphones have had the biggest variations; in particular, their ear cups started to feature a golden star each starting withKirby's Return to Dream Land, and previously were simply a flat color (most commonly red). Its headband has always been gray, usually dark gray, but sometimes light gray (like inKirby: Right Back at Ya!). Finally, the ear cushions have most of the time been golden, but they are light gray inKirby: Right Back at Ya!. Lastly, the mohawk has always been a gradient of green, yellow and orange, with the distribution of the three colors varying in different appearances.
In every game Mike can be used three times, the appearance of the microphones for each use has always been constant: the first use features a simple golden megaphone, the second an old stage microphone (often similar to Walky), and the third a stand microphone. The megaphone is the most consistent in design, and has only been pictured in-game, with no major differences between games. The old stage microphone, being the one most commonly depicted in official artwork and side media, has had countless different designs over the years; most notably, in games prior toKirby Air Ride, the microphone was completely or mostly silver, and resembled the ones found in real life. Starting fromKirby Air Ride andKirby: Right Back at Ya!, the microphone started resembling Walky, and gained a golden coloration for its base, alongside the silver coloration, although the resemblance to Walky is the closest in theKirby: Right Back at Ya! design. Finally, the stand microphone also used to be completely silver, but starting withKirby Star Allies the microphone's body became white.
InKirby: Right Back at Ya!, and in games starting withKirby's Return to Dream Land, Mike received a proper hat that is present whenever Kirby has the ability and still has charges left to use, this hat being the one from the second charge, the headphones. The other hats are still present, but they only appear when using their respective charges. In most media in which Mike is only used once, includingKirby Air Ride and theKirby novel series, the second charge hat and microphone are the only one present.

Kirby's Adventure / Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

InKirby's Adventure andKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Mike is obtained primarily fromMr. Tick-Tock, but can also be obtained by inhalingPaint Roller's painted microphone in his boss battle. It can be used three times, and each time it is used is visually different, but the effect is the same, defeating all common enemies on screen and dealing large damage to bosses and mid-bosses. InKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Kirby gains three distinct voice clips, as withKirby Super Star onward. Mike deals 10 damage inKirby's Adventure[1] and 14 damage inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land for each shot.[2] Because of that, it is the most powerful ability in the game.
Kirby Super Star /Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]
InKirby Super Star and the game's remake,Kirby Super Star Ultra, Mike is now obtained fromWalky. There is nohelper for the Mike ability, nor can it be obtained via aCopy Essence Deluxe.Kirby Super Star was the first game to introduce different shouts for each use of Mike.

Kirby Air Ride[edit]

InKirby Air Ride, Kirby can obtain the Mike ability from Walky, by collecting the Copy Panel inCity Trial, or by using aCopy Chance Wheel orMix. When he gets the ability, he automatically uses it, shouting once loudly into the desk mike to defeat nearby enemies and heavily damage and launch other racers. This is the first appearance of Mike in the games where it can only be used once.
InTop Ride, theMike appears in item form and has the effect of stunning all racers on the track for a moment.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

InKirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake,Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Mike returns as a limited-use ability, now gaining a regular hat that resembles the one used during the Desk Mike shout. It is once again provided by Walky. A notable difference from earlier games is that the shout now has a fixed radius — a cone in front of Kirby for the first two shouts, and a sphere surrounding him for the third — rather than covering the whole screen. In addition, Mike gains a new and more powerful variant on the third shout called "Encore", which can be activated by charging up the last shout by shaking the Wii Remote or mashing the Control Pad before releasing it.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe andKirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Mike returns inKirby: Triple Deluxe andKirby: Planet Robobot, functioning nearly identically to the way it does inKirby's Return to Dream Land, with the only difference being Kirby's new voice clips for the ability's attacks. It is still provided solely by Walky.

InKirby: Planet Robobot, Mike can be combined with theRobobot Armor to createMike Mode. Unlike the base ability, Mike Mode is not limited-use, and involves shooting out powerful sound waves from giant boom boxes to defeat enemies.
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse[edit]
InKirby and the Rainbow Curse, Mike Kirby cameos in theMusic Room, but Mike is not a usable ability in the game itself.
Kirby Battle Royale[edit]
Much like inKirby and the Rainbow Curse, Mike Kirby makes a cameo in theMusic Collection menu inKirby Battle Royale, but isn't an ability that can be used elsewhere.
Kirby Star Allies[edit]

InKirby Star Allies, Mike retains its moveset from the previous three main-series games. It also has a newFriend Ability calledFatal Chorus where Kirby and hisfriends join in chorus to shout a loud chord, dealing even more damage than Stand Mike & Encore.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

Mike appears inKirby Air Riders as an ability that can be obtained from Walky. Like inKirby Air Ride, it is a one time use ability, and is used immediately after being obtained, making the user shout loudly on the gained microphone. Like all Copy Abilities in the game, any rider can use it, not just Kirby; however, the scream of the ability is the same regardless of its user, that being the original sound effect fromKirby's Dream Land.
The Mike headphones retain their original design in this game, as they lack the star on each side.

In theKirby novel series[edit]

In theKirby novel series, the Mike ability appears inKirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?! andKirby: Big Race in Pupupu Land!, whereKirby obtains it fromWalky. With thisCopy Ability, Kirby can sing loud and destructive songs, capable of destroying caves and making others faint.
InKirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?!,Sir Kibble,Wheelie, and Walky lead Kirby,King Dedede, andMeta Knight into the cave they heldMrs. Parfaitski hostage in after explaining why they had done so. She is found tied to a thick post deep in the cave. When Meta Knight questions Mrs. Parfaitski about the chefs she locked away, she refuses to release them. Before the group leaves to search her mansion, Kirby comes up with an idea. Kirby inhales Walky to gain the Mike ability. He then sings his own loud, ear-splitting song about foods he likes, much to everyone's dismay. Kirby thinks they are emotionally moved by it, and continues, until he notices that the cave is collapsing. The group rushes out of the cave before it falls into a complete ruin. A tearful Mrs. Parfaitski finally gives in and agrees to free her chefs, after experiencing Kirby's horrible singing without even being able to cover her ears. Kirby does a somersault in satisfaction, dropping his Mike ability. A confused Walky is freed, and Sir Kibble remarks that Walky was lucky to miss out on Kirby's song.
InKirby: Big Race in Pupupu Land!, when Kirby learns that the third checkpoint of the race is a singing competition to see who can sing the loudest, he decides to inhale Walky to get the Mike ability and win, and he does as such. When he sings, his song is so loud that it causes everyone around him to faint. When Kirby finishes the song, he notices everyone lost their consciousness, and tries to wake them up, to no avail. He decides to simply hop back on hisWarp Star and continue the race. Not soon after, everyone ends up waking up and going back to the race. Kirby, having an easy time on the lead, ends up getting attacked byMr. Frosty, who is angry at him for having inhaled him not long before that. Mr. Frosty attacks Kirby throwing lumps of ice, one of which hits Kirby and makes him lose his Mike ability. Walky, now freed, is angry that Kirby inhaled him, much like Mr. Frosty.
InKirby: The Mysterious Incident on the Pupupu Train?!, Kirby obtains the Mike ability from Walky to try to wake up those under the effect of the slumbercumbers they accidentally ate. It ends up working, althoughYork, one of those that were awake and hadn't fallen under the effect of the cucumbers, ends up not covering his ears and faints due to Kirby's extremely loud singing.
InKirby: Having a Blast at the Music Festival!, Kirby inhales Walky to obtain Mike in hopes of using his loud voice to nullify the mind control effect the sound of the Legendary Guitar is having on everyone in the Music Festival. The possessedChor tries to resist at first, but ultimately faints due to Kirby's extremely loud singing. Having stopped the sound of the guitar, Kirby drops Mike, and frees Walky in the process, but then realizes he made everyone in the audience faint as well.

Trivia[edit]
- Mike inKirby's Adventure uses the same sound effectKing Dedede makes when he is defeated inKirby's Dream Land, which is the same sound effect used for theMike item. The sound returns inKirby Super Star, albeit only for the Megaphone.
- InKirby Super Star, the scream Kirby makes with the Stand Microphone was voiced byMasahiro Sakurai. According to him, he says "Chesto!", which is a Japanese battle cry originating from the Satsuma province (now Kagoshima).[3]
- Additionally, the scream Kirby makes with the Desk Mike in that game was a recording done by one of the clerks atHAL Laboratory at the time.[4]
- When Kirby sings his reprise ofKihon wa Maru in the Japanese version ofAbusement Park, it is possible to hear a sad horn in the background to reflect his sub-optimal performance. His singing even warps the wormhole as he travels through it.
- Several official Japanese sources state that Kirby is tone deaf.[5][6] This is the apparent reason why his singing harms enemies, though the description of theMike item fromKirby's Dream Land also suggests that his singing is so bad that enemies explode with laughter.[7]
- Although the Mike ability does not reappear inKirby's Dream Land 2, the original sound effect for it can be played in the game'sSound Test, for reasons unknown.
