Bonkers, one of the most well-knownmid-bosses in theKirby series.

Mid-bosses (also calledmini-bosses[1]) are a major part of theKirby franchise found in almost every game of theKirby series. Mid-bosses are enemies stronger than most regular enemies but weaker than mostbosses that appear in the worlds that Kirby travels through. Once Kirby enters the small area in which a mid-boss is located, he cannot proceed or go back until his opponent has been defeated (with a few exceptions), which usually takes longer than beating a regular enemy. Mid-bosses also typically give outCopy Abilities, but these can only be obtained after Kirby has knocked them out, enabling him to inhale and swallow them (inKirby Star Allies,Kirby and the Forgotten Land andKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, they are guaranteed to drop the Copy Ability hats even if their bodies are destroyed). Their name comes from the fact that they are similar to bosses, but are found in the middle of the levels.

Like most bosses, mid-bosses will drop debris, conjure minions or causeDropped Stars to appear when they attack, giving Kirby means to fight back if he has no Copy Ability.

Distinctions[edit]

It is not always clear what separates a mid-boss from other types of enemies. The following will attempt to outline the most common differences that distinguish mid-bosses as their own category.

Differences from normal enemies[edit]

  • Mid-bosses are typically tougher than standard enemies, taking several hits to defeat. They also flinch less than normal enemies, being harder to knock around.
  • Mid-bosses tend to have aHealth bar displayed to the player where regular enemies won't.
  • Mid-bosses usually stand in the way of the playable character, blocking progress until they are defeated.
  • Mid-bosses typically have their own theme that plays during their battles, distinct from the regular stage music.
  • Most mid-bosses have a unique 'downed' state once theirhealth runs out. In this state, they cannot move or attack and can be inhaled for their ability orrecruited as an ally. Mid-bosses cannot beinhaled until they are downed in this way (withsomeexceptions).
  • Starting withKirby's Return to Dream Land, mid-bosses have a distinct 'defeat sound' which sounds like a warbling explosion. This plays when they are KO'd and when they are destroyed.

Differences from bosses[edit]

  • Bosses are typically tougher than mid-bosses, and tend to have morehealth in comparison. They also flinch even less than mid-bosses.
  • Mid-bosses are typically not fought at the end of levels, nor do they tend to have their own dedicated stages.
  • Starting withKirby's Return to Dream Land, bosses have their own 'defeat sound' which is distinct from the mid-boss version.
  • Starting withKirby's Return to Dream Land, bosses tend to have multiple phases to their attack patterns, with brief periods in-between where they take little or no damage (this distinction is shared with mid-bosses inKirby and the Forgotten Land, however).
  • Bosses cannot be inhaled, with the exception ofFlowery Woods byHypernova Kirby.

Keep in mind that these distinctions are not universal, and exceptions exist throughout the series. Nonetheless, they fit most circumstances.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

All mid-bosses faced in this game are larger versions of regular enemies, and typically don't have any special moves, but continually spawn smaller enemies to defend it. There are a couple exceptions to this, those being the enemy ambushes, which are also denoted with a health bar. Unlike other mid-bosses, they cannot be inhaled, but almost always drop aCrystal Shard when defeated for the first time.

All of the enemies have official Japanese names, but they are simply the standard enemy names with デカ (deka, meaning "big") attached. For example, the giantBouncy is named デカバウンシー (deka baunshī, "Big Bouncy").
