Mid-Boss Battle
"Mid-Boss Battle"[Japanese title] is amid-boss theme inKirby's Adventure, composed byHirokazu Ando. It is one of the two standard mid-boss themes of theKirby series, along with "Room Guarder".
Composition[edit]

"Mid-Boss Battle" is a simple and short song similar to "Room Guarder". It starts in E-flat Dorian mode, introducing its simple melody that always uses five chords per bar, at a constant rhythm that never changes. In each bar, the first three chords are always the same, followed by two of another chord. For the bars, a group of two bars is always repeated immediately after. After four bars, the song modulates to E Dorian, keeping the same pattern, then loops after four bars again. In other words, the bar structure of the piece is ABAB-CDCD, with each bar following a structure of AAABB for their chords.
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby's Adventure[edit]
The theme debuts in this game, playing inArenas. In addition, a version of the theme with a unique intro plays in theEgg Catchersub-game and the intro-less version also plays in theTower of Mid-Bosses.
Kirby's Avalanche[edit]
A faithful arrangement of the theme plays in the cutscene before the battle withKing Dedede.
Kirby Super Star[edit]
A simple arrangement of the theme plays exclusively when battlingIron Mam inDyna Blade.
Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]
An unused arrangement of the theme can be found in theSound Test ofKirby's Dream Land 3.
Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]
Due to the absence ofEgg Catcher and the theme for theTower of Mid-Bosses being substituted with "King Dedede's Theme", this theme plays only inArenas.
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]
TheKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land arrangement of the theme is reused as the mid-boss theme of this game, with minor differences such as a different bass sample. Despite not playing in any boss battles, its official name isボス (Boss).[2]
Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]
An arrangement of the theme serves as the main theme forBlock Attack. This version features the melody of the song twice, with some minor differences to the notes spread throughout. For some reason, it's the only music track not present in the game'sSound Test. In addition, theKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land version plays in the same sub-game if the "Old School" setting is on.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
The theme is one of the many boss themes incorporated into the "Boss Theme Medley" ofSuper Smash Bros. Brawl. Interestingly, its placement in the medley, which has the themes in chronological order, appears to indicate that it's representing eitherKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land orKirby & The Amazing Mirror. The medley is one of the default tracks of theHalberd stage, and is arranged by Kentaro Ishizaka.
The track returns inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. In the former, it can once again be listened to on the Halberd stage. In the latter, like all otherKirby tracks in the game, it can be played on anyKirby series stage, Battlefield, Big Battlefield, Small Battlefield and Final Destination.
Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]
InKirby Super Star Ultra, an arrangement of theKirby Super Star version reprises the same role as the original game. Additionally, it also plays on the screen explainingMeta Knight's abilities at the beginning ofMeta Knightmare Ultra and during the Iron Mam battle in Level 2 of that game mode.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land[edit]
An arrangement of "Mid-Boss Battle" paired withthe boss theme fromKirby's Adventure serves as the mid-boss theme of levels located inPopstar. It is named "Fight! Mid-Boss Battle" and was arranged byJun Ishikawa.[1] The "Mid-Boss Battle" portion of this arrangement is nearly identical to the version inKirby Super Star, though in higher fidelity. Moreover, a slow arrangement of this theme can be heard in the ability select room ofThe True Arena, titled "Challenging the True Arena". Finally, parts of this song can be heard in "Underworld", a stage theme fromEgg Engines.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]
The mid-boss theme of this game, "Chasing Down the Miniboss", is a partial arrangement of "Mid-Boss Battle", incorporating it for all of the song, and also directly quoting one of its sections right before looping. It was arranged by Hirokazu Ando.
Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]
The second half of the game's mid-boss theme,"Metal N. Vasion", is an arrangement of this theme, featuring the song's melody twice and using theboss theme fromKirby Super Star as a countermelody. It was arranged by Hirokazu Ando once again.
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe[edit]
An arrangement of "Fight! Mid-Boss Battle" fromKirby's Return to Dream Land in an acoustic fashion plays in all the normal-rank quests, with the exception of Colossal Double-Team,Kracko andWhispy Woods.
Kirby's Blowout Blast[edit]
A long arrangement of the theme plays in the enemy ambushes in the various stages of the game, with the exception of the ones present at the start ofLevel 5-5 and Level 5-5 EX. This version features a unique countermelody mostly played by an electric guitar, with the simple and short melody of the original song playing on repeat for the whole track.
Super Kirby Clash[edit]
A remix of the "Fight! Mid-Boss Battle" arrangement fromTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe with an electronic spin plays in the Colossal Double-Team Story Quest and both the Story and Party Colossal Triple-Team quests.
Kirby Fighters 2[edit]
"Final Battle - Overcome the Naughty Shadow!",Shadow Kirby's battle theme in the Final Chapter ofStory Mode: The Destined Rivals and on Very Hard difficulty inSingle-Handed Mode, features the key phrase of "Mid-Boss Battle" as a transitional phrase between rearranged sections of "Forest/Nature Area".
Kirby and the Forgotten Land /Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World[edit]
Kirby and the Forgotten Land features "Plundering Beast Battle", a theme used for mid-boss battles and enemy ambushes. While the guitar melody is completely original to this theme, the orchestral hits underscoring the track clearly follow the main phrase of "Mid-Boss Battle", albeit without its signature key change (as with "Underworld" inKirby's Return to Dream Land).
Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]
InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, remastered versions of "Fight! Mid-Boss Battle", "Underworld", and "Challenging the True Arena" play the same role as the original Wii version. They can be found in theJukebox as tracks 12, 110 and 191, respectively.
Additionally, an electronic arrangement of "Egg Catcher" plays when playing the sub-game. After beating the initialmissions for it, the original version of the track is unlocked to be played during the sub-game instead. Both of these tracks are in the Jukebox as tracks 67 and 136.
A short portion of the song can also be heard at the end of the track "The Merry, Magical World of Magolor!", which plays after completing 100 missions inMerry Magoland, and is accessible as track 200 in the Jukebox.
