Long ago, the soulless battle robotMetal General would bedispatched by its master to visit other planets andexterminate their foes. Now it serves assecurity, guarding this spot for eternity.
— VS Metal General Special Page inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Metal General is the boss ofEgg Engines inKirby's Return to Dream Land andKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe.

WhenKirby and his friends first enter Metal General's arena, the robot is stationary, but when they get close to it, it will activate and let out a burst of steam, signifying that the battle has begun. Defeating Metal General is necessary to advance to thenext level.

Appearance[edit]

Screenshot ofMetal General EX fromKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Metal General is a short, robotic character with a dark blue and light blue paint job and has yellow eyes. It has a shoulder pauldron above its short left arm, boot-like legs similar to Kirby's, and a right arm with a multi-purpose weapon launcher. Overall, it looks very similar to a shark. Metal General's overall appearance and fighting style are similar toMeta Knight, and can be seen as a loose "substitute" for a boss fight with the knight due to his playable appearance.

When knocked to around 55% of its maximum health, Metal General does not change appearance. Instead, it simply starts sparking and stuttering.

Metal General EX looks the same, but with a black and red paint job.

Attacks[edit]

The following lists all of Metal General's attacks in the Story Mode ofKirby's Return to Dream Land. All attack names were taken from official Japanese strategy guides.

Attacks - Story Mode
AttackDescription
ビームサーベル斬り
Beam Saber Slash
Metal General takes out a laser sword and starts slashing rapidly. The finishing strike leaves a star on the ground behind it.
電磁ニードル
Electro Shock Needle
Metal General flies into the air and turns on a protective shield. Spark bolts zig-zag out of the shield in various directions. During the second phase, another wave of bolts are fired after the first two.
ビームサーベル回転アタック
Beam Saber Rotation Attack
Metal General takes out its laser sword and spins it rapidly, then dashes forward, leaving a star behind.
ロケットランチャー
Rocket Launcher
Metal General fires a few wandering missiles from its cannon. These can be swallowed for theBomb Copy Ability. One or three missiles are fired in the first phase, while five or three missiles can be launched in the second phase.
Second phase only
デストラクションミサイル
Destruction Missile
Metal General summons a rocket, and rides it into the background. It will then attempt to ram Kirby with it before finally crashing it down, creating a lingering field of fire on the ground and some stars. Swallowing the rocket before it explodes will yield theCrash ability. It is also possible to destroy the rocket before it takes off by attacking it a few times. The first time this attack is used Metal General will always try to ram Kirby from the background twice. Every subsequent use has this background ram occur only once.
電撃シャトルループ
Electro Shock Shuttle Loop
Metal General activates a small shield, then flies into a dive toward Kirby, creating stars where it lands.
メタルビット
Metal Bit
Metal General deploys three small flying drones that pursue Kirby and fire an electric blast at him before eventually disappearing if not interacted with. Swallowing them yields theBeam ability.
サーチボム
Search Bomb
Metal General tosses three mines on the ground, which explode on contact or after a set time. The mines can be swallowed for theBomb ability.

In phase 1, Metal General attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:

  1. Beam Saber Slash
  2. Electro Shock Needle
  3. Beam Saber Rotation Attack
  4. Rocket Launcher [3 missiles]
  5. Beam Saber Slash [one slash]
  6. Beam Saber Slash
  7. Rocket Launcher
  8. Beam Saber Rotation Attack
  9. Rocket Launcher
  10. Beam Saber Rotation Attack
  11. Rocket Launcher
  12. Beam Saber Rotation Attack

In phase 2, Metal General begins with a Destruction Missile that rams from the background twice and an Electro Shock Shuttle Loop before transitioning into a fixed attack order on loop as follows:

  1. Search Bomb or Metal Bit
  2. Beam Saber Slash
  3. Metal Bit or Search Bomb
  4. Destruction Missile
  5. Beam Saber Slash or walking
  6. Electro Shock Needle
  7. Electro Shock Shuttle Loop
  8. Electro Shock Shuttle Loop
  9. Beam Saber Rotation Attack
  10. Rocket Launcher [five missiles]
  11. Destruction Missile
  12. Beam Saber Slash or walking
  13. Rocket Launcher [three missiles], Search Bomb or Metal Bit
  14. Beam Saber Slash or walking
  15. Electro Shock Shuttle Loop
  16. Beam Saber Rotation Attack [sometimes]

Defeating Metal General in Story Mode causes it to crumble and explode, finishing the level.

Forced to work security longafter its master's death, this robot usesAI tomaintain itself and control the machines of Egg Engines. It has a wide variety of advanced features...but still noheart.
— VS Metal General EX Special Page inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

In Extra Mode and The True Arena, the General has many more weapons in its arsenal, and uses them more frequently to litter the stage with hazards. Additionally, many of its moves that it only used in the second phase in Story Mode are used in the first phase here. Once defeated in Extra Mode, it flies off and pilotsHR-D3 to attack Kirby once again.

Role in Merry Magoland[edit]

Metal General enjoys its time with the Waddle Dees.

By completing its boss battle inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Metal General will appear inMerry Magoland, playing with someWaddle Dees near the center of the park. Additionally, unlockableDress-Up Masks based on its regular and EX forms can be worn, provided the player has already defeated Metal General in Story Mode and Extra Mode respectively.

Trivia[edit]

  • Unlike any other enemy in both the original Wii release andDeluxe, whenever Metal General is hit, a green number in a stylized, 9-segment font indicating the amount ofdamage dealt flashes near it. How damage is displayed works as such: the game takes the actual damage of the attack, multiplies it by 10 and then adds a random number between this range (-3, 3) before displaying the damage value on-screen.
    • In the remake, the number was made slightly larger and brighter.
    • Metal General andComputer Virus are the only bosses in the main series that display the amount of damage dealt, although the latter displays it accurately.
    • In theKirby Clash games, the amount of damage dealt is always shown on every boss.
  • Metal General can be seen as a successor toMeta Knight's battle style in previous games, in particular with its rapid slashing attacks and how its "Electro Shock Shuttle Loop" resembles the similarly-namedShuttle Loop.
  • A very similar enemy to Metal General appears inKirby: Planet Robobot as a mid-boss, calledSecurity Force and mass produced byHaltmann Works Company. This replica has an abridged version of Metal General's moveset and also shows the amount of damage dealt, but it will try to self-destruct when defeated, unlike the original robot.
    • The new Special Pages inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe state that the original Metal General was also a security robot, who has continued to operate after its master's death.
    • The Special Pages also contain further references toKirby: Planet Robobot. Metal General is referred to as "soulless" (in Japanese,心無こころなき or "heartless"), which is a common theme withinKirby: Planet Robobot, in particular withStar Dream Soul OS being called a "heartless machine". In Story Mode, the usage of the term "exterminate" (「くじょ」) recallsSusie's common usage of the term; the Japanese text uses the term あるじ ("master"), which is commonly used in reference toPresident Haltmann, and includes the phrase 「とわにはたらきつづける」 ("continuing to work eternally"), alluding to the game's discussion of "eternal prosperity" as the goal of theHaltmann Works Company. In Extra Mode, the Japanese pause screen is written in the detached tone ofKirby: Planet Robobot's Special Pages, and the line "It has a wide variety of advanced features... but still no heart," is written as 「ただ まだ、ココロだけは りかい できていない もよう。」 ("However, it seems that it still does not understand what aheart is.") This also alludes to Star Dream Soul OS's Special Pages, where—in the Japanese text—Star Dream deems Haltmann's heart unnecessary and begins to delete it.
  • Some of Metal General's attacks loosely serve as an inspiration for some of the attacks of theMecha copy ability.
