This article is about King Dedede wearing the mask first given to him inKirby Super Star Ultra. For other instances of masked variants of King Dedede, seeWaning Crescent Masked Dedede andForgo Dedede.

Masked Dedede is a frequently-recurring "alter-ego" ofKing Dedede who first appeared as aboss inKirby Super Star Ultra, inRevenge of the King. This version of King Dedede comes equipped with a power-amplifying mask with a design similar toDark Mind's[1] and a mechanical hammer, variously referred to as the "New Dedede Hammer"[2] or the "Masked Dedede Hammer 2.0".[3] With this equipment, Masked Dedede has greaterhealth than he does normally, and is capable of performing a variety of new attacks, including firing missiles, laser beams, and a flamethrower from his hammer, and initiating a super-speedy hammer spin attack, though becoming rather dizzy afterward. Masked Dedede also comes withhis own special version of "King Dedede's Theme", based off the one that plays in the SNES remake ofKirby's Star Stacker, which has a much faster tempo.

Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

Kirby battling against Masked Dedede inRevenge of the King

InKirby Super Star Ultra, Masked Dedede is the final boss inRevenge of the King, and the first of the Final Four inThe True Arena. His battle is similar to King Dedede's inSpring Breeze, except that he has more health and new attacks. In addition, there is an electric field above the battle arena that can shockKirby if he floats too high or destroy anyAbility Star on contact. Notably, despite being a more powerful version of King Dedede, Masked Dedede still flinches when hit by Kirby, which means many of his attacks can be interrupted.

In Revenge of the King, Dedede offers Kirby ahammer before the battle, similar toMeta Knight's offering of asword in most of his fights. In The True Arena, no weapon is offered beforehand. When Masked Dedede is defeated in battle and is sent flying in Revenge of the King, his voice is considerably lower than when he is launched inSpring Breeze. InThe True Arena, his mask breaks and he simply slides back on the ground a bit.

Attacks[edit]

The following are all of Masked Dedede's attacks inKirby Super Star Ultra. Note that attack names are conjectural:

Masked Dedede's attacks inKirby Super Star Ultra
AttackDescription
Head SlideMasked Dedede runs and then dives at Kirby. His mask becomes slightly offset when he lands on the ground.
InhaleMasked Dedede approaches Kirby and then tries to inhale him. He has to shift his mask aside to perform this move.
HammerMasked Dedede approaches Kirby and then attempts to strike with his hammer in an overhead swing. This leaves aDropped Star on impact.
Jet Hammer SpinMasked Dedede activates a jet on his hammer and starts spinning around rapidly along the ground. After the attack stops, Dedede is left dazed for a moment as his mask is shifted aside.
Super Dedede JumpMasked Dedede leaps into the air and then comes back down three times, leaving drop stars on each side of him every time he lands.
This triple-jump version of the attack would become a recurring feature in battles with King Dedede and bosses based on him in future games.
Missile LauncherMasked Dedede opens a hatch on his hammer and launches three missiles out of it, which can be inhaled by Kirby and give theBomb ability when swallowed.
Leaping HammerMasked Dedede jumps high into the air and then comes down with his hammer out front. When he lands, his hammer sends out a shockwave that travels to the end of the arena, then leaves behind a drop star.
Belly SlideMasked Dedede puffs up as if to hover, but instead slides at Kirby.
FlamethrowerMasked Dedede opens a hatch on his hammer and shoots a gout of flame at Kirby.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

Masked Dedede inKirby: Triple Deluxe. Strings are visible on his back and hammer, which are being pulled byTaranza.
The rare Keychain

In the Story Mode ofKirby: Triple Deluxe, as Kirby enters theboss stage ofRoyal Road,Taranza will start controlling King Dedede using silk puppet strings and will use his magic to enhance his powers, giving him the form of Masked Dedede.

Masked Dedede's battle inKirby: Triple Deluxe is very similar to theKirby Super Star Ultra version during the first phase, as he uses the Masked Dedede Hammer 2.0 for many of his attacks, in addition to using his normal retinue of moves. However, when his first health bar is depleted, Masked Dedede will be knocked down and his hammer destroyed. Taranza then uses his magic to revive Dedede, turning his robes purple and leaving him with a heavily damaged mask, now referred to by the game asMasked Dedede's Revenge. Due to his hammer being broken, Masked Dedede's Revenge picks up a battle axe from one of the statues in the background and continues the fight with a new health bar. With the axe, Masked Dedede's Revenge has a much longer reach with his attacks, and Taranza helps out by tossing his magic orbs for the King to bat at Kirby. Dedede also gains the ability to use powerful spinning attacks, though these leave him very dizzy afterward. When Masked Dedede's Revenge is finally defeated, the mask shatters completely and Dedede is left unconscious for a long while afterward. He does not awake until after Kirby defeatsQueen Sectonia in their first fight.

InThe Arena, after defeating the previous seven battles (spawned in random order), Masked Dedede is fought again in the fixed 8th battle, later followed by the final two battles withQueen Sectonia andFlowered Sectonia. Masked Dedede also appears as a collectible uniquekeychain. It can be found inStage 3 ofOld Odyssey.

Masked Dedede appears as a uniquesticker inKirby: Planet Robobot. It can be found inStage 5 ofRhythm Route.

Kirby's Blowout Blast[edit]

At the end of the Secret Path inKirby's Blowout Blast, Kirby faces off against King Dedede's Revenge, similarly to how he was in Stage 5-EX. However, when he's knocked away, and aSparkling Star comes to grow him giant, this time he gets his mask and jet hammer, becomingGiant Masked Dedede. His attack patterns are similar to the regular Giant King Dedede fight, but the mask protects him from singularStar Bullets. He can also shoot a giant laser and missiles from his Jet Hammer. The mask breaks when he is defeated. When defeated in this state, King Dedede's Revenge starts crying, much like in theExtra Game post-credits scene inKirby's Dream Land.

The following lists Giant Masked Dedede's attacks inKirby's Blowout Blast. All attack names are conjectural unless otherwise stated.

Giant Masked Dedede's attacks inKirby's Blowout Blast
AttackDescription
Dedede MissileGiant Masked Dedede's hammer opens up and fires out missiles which land in pre-determined locations. The missiles can be inhaled and spat out. Seven or thirteen missiles are launched from the hammer, either slowly or rapid-fire.
LaserGiant Masked Dedede raises his hammer above the playing field and it opens up to fire a laser beam. Dedede then aims the laser beam towards Kirby's position, leaving stars behind as it travels. After the hammer head closes back up, Dedede proceeds to perform a regular hammer swing.
HammerGiant Masked Dedede raises his hammer above the playing field, homes in on Kirby's position, and then slams it down on the ground. Multiple stars are left behind each time the hammer hits the ground. If the hammer is charging before the swing, then the slam leaves behind shockwaves. If the hammer does not charge, then Dedede will swing the hammer three times in a row, moving the hammer to a different location on the stage each time before swinging.
InhaleGiant Masked Dedede opens his mouth and begins drawing Kirby closer to his gaping maw, alongside sucking up tons ofGordos in different patterns. If Kirby doesn't run away from the suction fast enough, he'll get caught, chewed on three times and then spat back out. When the Gordos roll in, the blind spots are to the far left and right sides of the arena.

Notably, when Masked Dedede roars at the start of the battle or uses his inhale in this game, the mouthpiece of the mask opens. In earlier games, Dedede would have to shift his mask aside for a moment if he wanted to use his inhale.

Trivia[edit]

  • Shinya Kumazaki stated onMiiverse that the design of Masked Dedede's mask is based onDark Mind's.[1] This may have been what led to the creation ofKing D-Mind, who is essentially a hybrid between the two characters.
  • Masked Dedede's two phases inKirby: Triple Deluxe share one totalhealth value despite having two health bars, similar toHR-D3 andHyness.
    • Considered the DX version of theTriple Deluxe Masked Dedede,Shadow Dedede's two phases use the same health bar instead, similar toCorrupt Hyness.
  • TheKirby Super Star Ultra artwork of Masked Dedede depicts his hammer as having a long and sharp point at the end of the handle. While the in-game hammer does come to a point at the handle, it is not nearly as long or pronounced as it is in this artwork.
