— Mace Knight inRevenge of Meta Knight - Chapter 1,Kirby Super Star Ultra

Mace Knight is part of the Mid-BossMeta-Knights inKirby's Adventure andKirby Super Star, as well as their respective remakes,Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land andKirby Super Star Ultra. He is seen on theHalberd and onAquarius.

Mace Knight is thetoughest of the four Meta-Knights, taking many hits to defeat, though he can still be easilyinhaled, but will giveKirby noCopy Ability if swallowed. Despite his name, he actually attacks with a flail, not a mace. He swings the flail over his head and occasionally throws it, causing it to fly a considerable distance to the left or right before returning to him. His flail is capable of blocking certain attacks, particularly ones that cannot penetrate. Mace Knight cannot jump, meaning that if he is knocked down to a lower area, he cannot get back up again.

Kirby's Adventure /Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

Mace Knight debuts as a member of the Meta-Knights mid-boss inKirby's Adventure and its remake,Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. He is fought alongside the other group membersAxe Knight,Javelin Knight, andTrident Knight. During the battle, he will swing his flail over his head and dash towardsKirby, and may also thrust it at him. He can be defeated withCopy Abilities or by simply inhaling him, though he has morehealth than the other knights.

Kirby Super Star[edit]

Mace Knight re-appears inKirby Super Star with a similar role to that of its previous outing, battle-wise. However, in the sub-gameRevenge of Meta Knight, he has a speaking role along withAxe Knight and the other members of theHalberd crew, commenting as Kirby completes his task of destroying the Halberd. He is mainly in charge of giving updates on the Halberd's condition and is also tasked with firing up the main cannon. Additionally, if Kirby finds the secret room on the ship with lots offood and1-Ups, Mace Knight will reveal that the stash of goodies in said room belongs to him, and expresses much sadness as Kirby eats it all. In the Japanese version, Mace Knight has a habit of appending 「だス」 ("da su") to the end of his sentences.

Despite having a speaking role during the sub-game Revenge of Meta Knight, he is not fought in the enemy ambush inChapter 7. This discrepancy is rectified in the remake.

Mace Knight's dialogue sprites in Revenge of Meta Knight depicts him with a maroon palette, but this color scheme does not appear anywhere else in the game.

Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

Mace Knight returns inKirby Super Star Ultra, reprising his role fromKirby Super Star, although this time he is battled in Chapter 7 of Revenge of Meta Knight.

Moreover,Galacta Knight may summon Mace Knights during his boss fight in this game.

Kirby Mass Attack[edit]

InKirby Mass Attack, Mace Knight is fought alongsideJavelin Knight at the end of Stage 4 in the sub-gameStrato Patrol EOS. In this mode, his only attack is swinging his flail around, moving around after swinging it. In addition to damaging Kirbys, the flail can block shots fired from them. Mace Knight also appears inKirby Quest. Similarly to Strato Patrol EOS, he is battled with the rest of the Meta-Knights in Chapter 3.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Mace Knight makes a cameo in theKirby: Planet Robobot sub-gameMeta Knightmare Returns. When Meta Knight uses his Meta Knightmares attack, Mace Knight appears with the rest of the Meta-Knights to defeat all on-screen foes. He also appears at the end of the sub-game celebrating with Meta Knight.

Mace Knight also appears as asticker, taking his art fromKirby Super Star.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

InKirby's Dream Buffet, Mace Knight appears on aCharacter Treat, depicting his artwork fromKirby Super Star.

The following is a complete list of every appearance Mace Knight has made in theKirby novel series, along with the role he plays and its details in the plot of each volume:

Mace Knight's appearances in theKirby novel series
VolumeImageRoleRole detailsNotes
Kirby: Big Race in Pupupu Land!Tertiary supporting characterIn this volume, Mace Knight is one of the many contestants in the big race held inDream Land, along with the other threeMeta-Knights. When the racers are choosing their machines,Axe Knight chooses theShadow Star. The other Meta-Knights get jealous, and they board the machine too. The four of them fight over the machine as it unstably cruises along. Throughout the rest of the race, Mace Knight is usually grouped with the other contestants without standing out. During the spicy food-eating contest, Mace Knight is one of the many contestants in pain from the spice, and wonders whyKirby is fine after eating the spicy food.
Kirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!!Tertiary supporting characterIn this volume, like the other Meta-Knights, Mace Knight comes toDedede's Cake Royale to root for Meta Knight in his matches. During the round ofFlagball against Kirby, he cheers after Meta Knight hits the flag. He is sad when Meta Knight loses the round but cheers up afterCaptain Vul tells the Meta-Knights that winning the match was not Meta Knight's goal, rather it was testing his strength. During the finals, Mace Knight observes the match, wondering who will win. After Kirby spits outSword Knight, he is relieved to find that Sword Knight did not abandon them.
Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!Tertiary supporting characterIn this volume, Mace Knight,Trident Knight and Captain Vul go to get cake for themselves fromChef Kawasaki. WhenKirby asks about their intentions, Mace Knight reveals their goal, as much for Captain Vul's dismay. Mace Knight gets mad at Kirby after learning that he ate all the cakes and holds his weapon against him. After they state that they want to help save theRainbow Islands, he and the otherMeta-Knights start to envision a vacation like the one thatKing Dedede wants, implying that they want to save the Rainbow Islands only to get a vacation. When Meta Knight returns from the adventure, Mace Knight misinterprets Meta Knight's disclaim of accomplishment as modesty.
Kirby: Meta Knight and the Knight of YomiSupporting characterIn this volume, Mace Knight competes with the other Meta-Knights to see who can defeat the most enemies as he protects theHalberd from a usual pirate raid. After the pirates' captain breaks the supposedGalaxia, he helps to stop him in the middle of a gloat and scare him out of the Halberd. He comes with Meta Knight to the weapon shop and learns about the master of disguise from the imprisoned shopkeeper. He comes with Meta Knight toPlanet Magnus and searches for a doctor to heal him after he is rescued from the Magnus Hellhole. He and the other The Meta-Knights are sent by Captain Vul toPlanet Charm to help Kirby and his friends with fighting. When Kirby fightsGalacta Knight, he tries to volunteer himself to be inhaled by Kirby so he can receive a copy ability, but Kirby inhalesBlade Knight instead. While Kirby and King Dedede fight Galacta Knight, Mace Knight chases Beryl but falls into a hole he prepared as a trap. While the fight continues, he needs to hear fromWaddle Dee reports to how it is going. After Meta Knight rescues them, Mace Knight captures Beryl by sneaking behind him. At the end of the story, he has a tea party with all the other subordinates of Meta Knight.
Kirby: Uproar at the Kirby Café?!Tertiary supporting characterIn this volume, like the other Meta-Knights, Mace Knight is excited by the thought of trying the desserts of the cooking competition. Meta Knight agrees to let the Meta-Knights taste the dishes, but only if they think of it as part of their training. Mace Knight comes on the day of the competition with Meta Knight and wonders with the others what dish will win each round.

Trivia[edit]

  • In most games, Mace Knight's "visor" can light up on its own, which depicts lines of light whose color differs depending on the color palette of the enemy. It is unknown if the lines of light are his actual "eyes" or not.
  • Despite not giving Kirby a Copy Ability when inhaled, there's an unused version of Mace Knight intended for aMuseum hidden in the files forKirby's Adventure, which gives Kirby theHammer ability when inhaled.
