- This article is about the Lor Starcutter in a general context. For the boss fight with the Lor Starcutter in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, seeLor & Magolor.
| “ | The Lor Starcutter is a spaceship that serves as the headquarters for your adventure. As you gather Energy Spheres, new sub-games and challenge stages (in which you must use specific Copy Abilities) will become available to play here. Find all the Energy Spheres you can! | ” | — Kirby's Return to Dream Land manual |
TheLor Starcutter (sometimes shortened toLor) is a technologically advanced flying ship which serves as a location, as well asa boss, inKirby's Return to Dream Land and itsremake. It is piloted byMagolor, who claims to have found it abandoned in a volcano onHalcandra. In the opening cutscene for the game, the Lor Starcutter crashes onPopstar, causing it to lose the oars, the left wing, the right wing, the mast, the emblem, and all 120Energy Spheres. In order for it to fly again,Kirby and his friends must collect all of the missing parts. Once the Lor Starcutter has all parts restored, the Lor Starcutter is able to travel through dimensions to reach Halcandra, where it was originally salvaged.
The Lor Starcutter serves as a safe area Kirby can visit in-between his journeys in the game. Entering the Lor Starcutter leads to the main room with Magolor, as well as the ship's main console. TheCopy Ability Rooms are located to the left in the ship, theChallenge Stages to the right, and theSub-Games can be accessed by either going to the left or right hallway and going down a ladder. However, all of those need a certain number of Energy Spheres to access, and access to any of the rooms requires that Kirby find the Oars (complete Level 1:Cookie Country).
Once he makes his deceit known, Magolor uses the Lor Starcutter to attack Kirby and friends in the game's climax. In this form, the duo are referred to asLor & Magolor. The ship takes on a dark color scheme and uses its various parts as weapons. More information about this boss fight can be found on its page.
Additionally inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, the Lor Starcutter also appears inMerry Magoland, docked at the western portion of the park after Kirby has defeatedGrand Doomer in Story Mode.
Origin[edit]
The following is spoken word for word by Magolor once Kirby has collected all 120Energy Spheres:
| “ | The Lor is a legendary Halcandran vessel crafted by the ancients. It's said that an incredible power was used to construct it. And that the ancients used that same power to craft countless other legendary creations. I excavated this ship from the volcano where Landia dwells and repaired it. And I couldn't help but make a few upgrades before taking it for a spin. Legend also says that this ship has a mind of its own. I'm not so sure. But I'm hoping it will speak to me someday, if I take good care of it. | ” | — Magolor |
It can be seen that the Lor Starcutter has a mind of its own when it rescues Kirby and company after Magolor is defeated. InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, the Special Page for Lor EX & Magolor states that the Lor sensed something was amiss when it met Magolor, and that it may be deliberately holding back its true power to help Kirby defeat him.
In the Wii version'sExtra Mode, Magolor EX's Special Page states that he stole both the Lor and theMaster Crown from their "sacred resting places on Halcandra". This aligns with his claim that he excavated the ship from Landia's volcano, and suggests a link between the two artifacts. Other dialogue from Magolor in Extra Mode strongly implies that the same ancients who built the Lor also builtNova fromKirby Super Star and theStar Rod fromKirby's Adventure.

Inside it, Magolor shows theDimension Mirror.
InKirby and the Search for the Dreamy Gears!, the Lor is an ancient mysterious ship that was rumored to have the power to cross to a different world. It serves as Magolor's motivation for collecting the gears in the story. Before the events of the story, Magolor finds the Lor in the sky in a broken state. Because some of its parts are missing, the Lor can't move. Magolor searches for a way to repair the Lor, but since the Lor was made from the power of the ancient civilization, ordinary parts can't repair it. After hearing a rumor that anancient machine was found inDiamond Town, Magolor comes to the town to find if there are ancient parts that he can use. After stealing all the gears, Magolor tries to escape Diamond Town and repair the Lor, but is captured byHugo and his subordinates.
Trivia[edit]

- Acutter is a class of ships designed for speed, so named for the way they cut through waves. Based on this, it is likely that "Lor" is the ship's name while "Starcutter" is the class it belongs to; Magolor often refers to the ship as "the Lor" or "my Starcutter", but never "the Starcutter".
- Corrupt Hyness' Special Page for the second phase of his battle inKirby Star Allies states that Lor means "Paradise" in Hyness' language. This is possibly a reference to the Lor Starcutter's origin, suggesting it was not always used for battle purposes. This is more concretely hinted at in Lor EX & Magolor's Special Page inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, which states that "it can travel to far-off paradises with ease".
- The Lor Starcutter is associated with a particular electronic metronome sound in cutscenes, with "A Visitor from Afar" and "Halcandra: A New Enemy" both featuring the same sound in establishing shots of the ship's interior. The same electronic metronome sound also appears inKirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World, being heard in "Last Song (Incomplete) - NEICHEL's Unfinished Track", "Prescient Stirring Fa-lu-wa-a Song", and "Eternally Stirring Fa-lu-wa-a Song".
- Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World features an object called the "Spaceship New World", available as a collectiblefigure and also seen in various other places in the game (most notably as part of the rubble in theStar-Crossed World level prior to the fight withGenwel Meteonelfilis). This spaceship, with its spherical design and distinctively-shaped windows, strongly resembles the cockpit of the Lor Starcutter (the area directly below the mast).

This craft is capable of traversing space and time, so a meeting of two Lor Starcutters from different times is certainly possible. Wow, wouldn't it be cool if that really happened? I wonder - the Lor Starcutter that can be seen when Galacta Knight performs this attack...what time is it from? And, if there is someone inside it, who are they, and where are they going? Presumably, when the rift opens and we can see them, they can see into our world, too!
