| “ | Landia, the4-headed guardian who sleeps inHaldera Volcano, has been revered as this planet'sprotector since ancient times...so why is itawake now? And looking this way soangrily?! Eep! | ” | — VS Landia Special Page inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe |
Landia is an ancient dragon and the protector of ancient artifacts onHalcandra; most notably theLor Starcutter and theMaster Crown, the latter of which he wears on his highest head. He consists of four separate dragons which can combine into a singlehydra-like entity or split apart again depending on circumstances. In addition to this power, Landia can also breathe fire, conjure up harmful gusts of wind, and generate electric fields, though some of these powers may be drawn from the Master Crown rather than Landia's own innate ability. Aside from this, Landia's main attack strategy is to dive at his opponents, either as one or separated.
Introduced inKirby's Return to Dream Land as the boss ofDangerous Dinner, Landia has since reappeared in severalKirby games, most notably in theTeam Kirby Clash series, where he andvariants of him are fought multiple times. Despite appearing so often as an opponent, Landia is described as a benevolent guardian angel and protector, who only fights Kirby and his allies due to possession or misunderstanding. Outside of theKirby games, Landia has appeared inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate as aSpirit.
Physical appearance[edit]
Landia resembles a classic dragon, but with four heads with large eyes (whose color changes based on circumstance) and beak-like mouths. When combined into a single dragon, Landia only has one larger body with primarily red-orange coloration and a single large pair of wings. He also has no forelimbs, but sports a single long tail with a red and purple-striped frill on the end. The horns and spikes on Landia's heads differ based on the position of the head, with the lowermost head being the least-adorned, the top crown-bearing head having the longest horns, and the side heads having asymmetrical horn patterns which mirror each-other. Each of Landia's heads bears a dark star-shaped mark on the faces, and the body has a mane of white hair covering the upper chest.
When split into four separate dragons, each of Landia's heads get their own bodies with their own sets of wings. As separate dragons, Landia's horns are all simplified and made identical, and the feet and tails are also simpler and stubbier. Notably, after being defeated by Kirby and losing the Master Crown inKirby's Return to Dream Land, Landia never re-merges into a single dragon for the remainder of the game, which may suggest that his ability to merge into one was a power granted by the crown.
Landia EX looks largely identical to his regular form, but bears a largely purple body color instead. Both this and his regular orange color are references to theGreat Dragon's different colors inKirby Super Star Ultra.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land[edit]
InKirby's Return to Dream Land, Landia is introduced as an antagonist whenMagolor takes Kirby and his friends toHalcandra using theLor Starcutter. Upon arriving in Halcandra's sky, Landia immediately attacks the Lor and shoots it down using fireballs. Using this incident, Magolor convinces Kirby and his friends to go and defeat Landia in his perch atopHaldera Volcano at the end of the levelDangerous Dinner. Magolor has a fair amount to say about Landia, describing him as "that crazy old dragon" or "a truly fearsome foe. Super fearsome, even", and suggests that Landia was asleep for a long time, but only recently awoke and started causing havoc. In truth, Landia sees Magolor as a threat because Magolor stole the Lor Starcutter from him and was also trying to take the dragon'sMaster Crown. With Kirby's unwitting help, Magolor is ultimately able to take the crown from Landia after he is defeated and use it to transform into apowerful villain aiming to conquer the galaxy.
In order to stop Magolor, Kirby and his friends team up with the dragon they had just defeated and chase after Magolor intoAnother Dimension. Landia gets Kirby and his friends past many obstacles and helps them defeat the Lor Starcutter (being puppeteered by Magolor). However, Kirby and his friends have to finish the job on their own after Landia gets knocked away by Magolor's energy attacks. Once Magolor is defeated and the crown destroyed, Landia rescues Kirby and his friends before they are engulfed by the shattering dimension around them and returned safely toPopstar. Landia then takes the recovered Lor Starcutter and returns to Halcandra with it.
As a boss[edit]
| “ | A four-headed dragon that sleeps onHalcandra,Landia has been revered as aprotector since ancient times...until now. | ” | — VS Landia Special Page fromKirby's Return to Dream Land. |
Landia is faced as the boss of Dangerous Dinner. During the first phase of the fight, he fights as the whole dragon. During the second phase, he splits up and attacks as the four smaller dragons, and the dragon wearing the crown takes more damage than the other three. They may recombine into their four-headed form during the second phase for certain attacks.
The following lists all of Landia's attacks in the Story Mode ofKirby's Return to Dream Land.
| Attacks - Story Mode | |
|---|---|
| Attack | Description |
| ファイアブレス Fire Breath | Landia fires individual fire balls from his mouths that cannot beinhaled. |
| テイルアタック Tail Attack | Landia flies in close and performs three rapid spins, striking with his wings and his feet. The last strike leavesdrop stars behind. Additionally, Landia may do one tail attack, spit fire and repeat two more times. |
| グライドアタック Glide Attack | Landia dives in a maneuver that cannot be dodged using acrouch, leaving drop stars at the lowest point of the dive. When split into four, all four Landias dive across the stage, two at a time. |
| ツインブレスファイア Twin Breath Fire | Landia breathes fire with two of his heads, covering much of the stage. In phase 2, Landia moves up and down while spouting flames instead of staying in one place. Additionally, Landia may systematically use this move, then move to a different position and use it again. As soon as the fire breath starts, stars are left behind. If done while stationary, more stars appear after the fire stops. |
| ウィンドカッター Wind Cutter | Landia flaps his wings, creating a torrent of wind that pushes Kirby back, and also creates sharp cutter blades that can do damage and can't be inhaled. In the first phase, eight cutter blades are formed. In the second phase, 11 cutter blades are formed. |
| Second phase only | |
| ファイアレイン Fire Rain | Landia repositions and fires downward repeatedly, covering a large area systematically. The first and last shots leave drop stars. |
| グランドクロス Grand Cross | Landia flies into a grid formation, and starts charging electricity between his bodies. He will either reposition or move about in a clockwise or counterclockwise manner. |
| フォーメーションパス Formation Pass | Landia forms a large fireball and tosses it around to his other parts. After three passes from each dragon, the fireball then flies into the background, and crashes on the stage, leaving drop stars. |
*Attack names are from official Japanese strategy guides, unless otherwise stated. | |
In phase 1, Landia attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:
- Fire Breath
- Tail Attack
- Glide Attack
- Twin Breath Fire
- Wind Cutter
- Glide Attack
- Glide Attack
- Fire Breath
- Tail Attack [three sets of a Tail Attack and Fire Breath]
- Twin Breath Fire [systematically in four different positions]
In phase 2, Landia attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:
- Fire Rain
- Grand Cross [three times in different locations]
- Glide Attack
- Formation Pass
- Fire Rain
- Grand Cross [rotating]
- Wind Cutter
- Twin Breath Fire
- Fire Breath [sometimes]
- Grand Cross [three times in different locations; sometimes]

- Formation Pass
- Glide Attack
- Grand Cross [rotating]
- Fire Rain
- Tail Attack
- Glide Attack
- Twin Breath Fire [systematically in four different positions; sometimes]
InExtra Mode, Landia transforms intoLandia EX when encountered. In this form, his color scheme is purple, and his attacks are generally faster and cover more ground.
| Attacks - Extra Mode | |
|---|---|
| Attack | Description |
| ウィンドカッター Wind Cutter | Landia flaps his wings, creating a torrent of wind that pushes Kirby back, and also creates five sharp cutters that can do damage and can't be inhaled. Landia then circles around and performs this move again on the other side, firing six sharp cutter blades. |
| テイルアタック Tail Attack | Landia flies in close and performs three rapid spins, striking with his wings and his feet. The last strike leaves drop stars behind. Faster than the normal counterpart. Additionally, in the second phase, Landia may do one tail attack, spit fire and repeat two more times. |
| グライドアタック Glide Attack | Landia dives in a maneuver that cannot be dodged using a crouch, leaving drop stars at the lowest point of the dive. Additionally, in the second phase, Landia might fly into the background before attempting to ram into Kirby, similar to one ofDyna Blade's attacks fromKirby Super Star. |
| ツインブレスファイア Twin Breath Fire | Landia breathes fire with two of his heads, covering much of the stage. Landia moves side-to-side while performing this move and in phase 2, also moves up and down. Additionally, in the second phase, Landia may systematically use this move, then move to a different position and use it again. |
| ファイアブレス Fire Breath | Landia fires paired fire balls from his mouths that cannot be inhaled. Many more shots than the normal counterpart. |
| Second phase only | |
| グランドクロス Grand Cross | Landia flies into a grid formation, and starts charging electricity between his bodies. He will either move from left-to-right and right-to-left while stopping the electric charge every-so-often or move about in a counterclockwise manner before stopping and reversing direction. |
| フォーメーションパス Formation Pass | Landia forms a large fireball and tosses it around to his other parts, while moving closer in, then back out. After four passes from each dragon, the fireball then flies into the background, splits into three, and crashes on the stage, leaving drop stars. |
| クアドラプルグライドアタック Quadruple Glide Attack | Landia dives each of his bodies across the stage, one at a time. |
| ファイアレイン&グライドアタック Fire Rain & Glide Attack | Three of the Landias re-position and fire multiple shots downward repeatedly, covering a large area systematically. The first and last shots leave drop stars. Additionally, the dragon wearing the Master Crown will perform a Glide Attack while this is happening. |

Trivia[edit]
- Landia's eyes are green when first encountered, and turn red when furious. After being defeated, they turn blue, and stay that way throughoutAnother Dimension.
- Landia EX's eyes are dark magenta andParallel Landia's eyes are yellow, but both gain red eyes when furious.
- InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Landia's eyes do not turn red until it splits apart, unlike in previous games, where they turn red while they are still combined. The textures for its combined model's red eyes are present in the game data, but go unused because the animation that controls this behavior does not change the texture.[1]
- Landia EX's Special Page inKirby's Return to Dream Land indicates Landia guards more than one legendary item.Magolor EX's Special Page also mentions he stole theLor Starcutter fromHalcandra. The Lor could be another item that Landia was guarding besides theMaster Crown.
- Landia's teeth are simply a texture on the inside of his mouths in earlier games, but inSuper Kirby Clash andKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, they are fully modeled, making them much easier to see.
- Interestingly, the rideable Landias in the Another Dimension shooting sequence do not have fully-modeled teeth, even inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe (likely because they are so small on-screen that it would not make an obvious difference). Their 2D depictions in theKirby Star Allies Celebration Pictures also do not have visible teeth.
- In English, Landia is referred to as "it" in most appearances, but is also referred to as both "it" and "he" inTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe andSuper Kirby Clash.
- In German, Landia is alternately referred to as male or female.
- Landia EX and Magolor EX are the only bosses inKirby's Return to Dream Land who visibly transform into their EX forms when encountered, rather than simply being in their upgraded form already. In Landia's case, he also reverts back to his original form after he is defeated. This may be because both characters are seen in pre-rendered cutscenes, and staying in their original forms until they are encountered allows for reuse of the original animations.
