Kirby Star Allies is amain-seriesKirby game for theNintendo Switch released in 2018, making it the first main-series release on a home console sinceKirby's Return to Dream Land in 2011. It is a side-scrolling platformer game with three-dimensional visuals that succeeds theNintendo 3DS titles ofKirby: Triple Deluxe andKirby: Planet Robobot in general style, though it takes on a set of features and attributes more reminiscent of titles likeKirby Super Star. Designed as a "culmination" title of the whole series up to that point, the game is largely designed around celebrating it, including several references to past titles in multiple forms, and was released as part ofthe series' 25th anniversary celebration. In place of a special power-up or vehicle specifically forKirby,Kirby Star Allies features extensivemultiplayer co-op, allowing Kirby to recruit allies fromvarious on-stage enemies or summonspecial partners from theDream Palaces. With the aid of these partners, Kirby can then performcombination moves, including some special transformations that can only be done with a full party of four.

Kirby Star Allies was initially announced at E3 2017, known then asKirby for Nintendo Switch. It subsequently released on March 16, 2018 in nearly all regions, seeing later releases in Hong Kong (for the digital version only),[1] South Korea,[2]China,[6] and a number of Southeast Asian regions.[3][4][5] Unlike past mainline games in the series,Kirby Star Allies received three free updates over the course of the next several months; this was done to keep interest in the game, as well as to "keep long-time fans happy".[7] The added content mostly came in the form of additional Dream Friends and anExtra Mode that involved them heavily, along with extra bosses and bug fixes.Kirby Star Allies was a commercial success, and is the third best selling game in the series, with 4.38 million copies sold worldwide as of December 2022.[8] Moreover, it, alongside the following main-series game,Kirby and the Forgotten Land, are considered a big, connected project that led HAL Laboratory to finally create a mainline 3DKirby game.[9]

Story[edit]

A botched ritual on a faraway space station rains trouble across the universe and calls Kirby to adventure once more.

Far away, on a distant terminus in outer space, astrange robed figure approaches agiant purple crystal heart encased in a glass ball and punctured byfour magical spears. The wizard-like being then raises an incantation to remove the spears and shell surrounding the heart, which causes the heart to shatter, shooting pieces of it all over the galaxy. Many of these pieces fly all the way toPopstar, where they begin raining down on the normally peaceful planet.Meta Knight andKing Dedede separately encounter the hearts as they land, and Dedede, in particular, becomes entranced by them. Meanwhile,Kirby is sleeping beside a hollow hillside, when a separate heart-shaped ray hits his head. This causes him to stir, only to discover that Dedede'sWaddle Dees are running towardCastle Dedede with as much food as they can carry, leaving Kirby to presume that Dedede is stealing all the food fromDream Land again.Kirby rushes off toward the castle to put a stop to this. Along the way, Kirby discovers a strange new power within himself that allows him to charm enemies and make them into his friends. With the help of his new allies, Kirby battles his way throughWhispy Woods, who drops one of the mysterious hearts upon defeat. Kirby then goes towards Dedede's castle and confronts the king, who, up to that point, was busy gorging himself on dirty fruit. Dedede immediately attacks, transforming into an overly muscular version of himself in the process. Despite this, Kirby manages to beat him, causing another one of the dark hearts to pop out of the King as he reverts to normal. The heart then flies away on its own, prompting Kirby to give chase.

Kirby and his allies run intoFrancisca, the first ofThe Three Mage-Sisters in theJambastion.

Kirby runs all over Popstar in pursuit of the hearts, ultimately bumping into Meta Knight - who is also possessed - who forces a fight. After defeating the masked swordsman and freeing him of his possession, agiant alien fortress embeds itself into Popstar. Kirby and his allies board the hostile base, battling the gatekeepersPon & Con and making their way to the top. Along the way, they encounter the Three Mage-Sisters;Francisca,Flamberge, and the head generalZan Partizanne. As Kirby fights them, they make it known that they are in pursuit of the hearts which fell onto Popstar, intent on using them to revive their dark god. When Kirby defeats them, Zan Partizanne initiates the fortress's self destruct sequence, in hopes that Kirby will be trapped in the rubble. Instead, Kirby and his allies escape and fly off into outer space. They visit several alien worlds in pursuit of the hearts. In the process, they are forced to fight the Mage-Sisters again, along with other formidable opponents. Eventually, Kirby and his allies make it to the home base of the Mage-Sisters, a space station calledJambandra. They eventually reach theterminus where the same wizard from the intro is attempting to repair the crystal heart by recombining the pieces. Zan Partizanne tries to stop Kirby from interfering but is defeated.

Kirby and his allies barge intoThe Divine Terminus atJambandra to attempt to interrupt a sinister ritual.

Upon the defeat of his finest general, the wizard (whose name is revealed asHyness) turns and faces Kirby himself. After batting his own general out of the way, Hyness proceeds to deliver a crazed rant at Kirby, blaming his kind for the woes that fell upon him, and reasserting his desire to awaken his dark god. He battles Kirby, but shortly into the fight, his hood gets knocked off, revealing his true face. From there, he uses the inanimate bodies of the Three Mage-Sisters as projectiles to fight Kirby with, his mad power proving difficult to overcome. Kirby ultimately beats Hyness, but this only forces the cornered officiant to resort to drastic measures. He sacrifices the Mage-Sisters, and then himself by plunging all of them into the heart, mending it completely and causing it to awaken.

Kirby and his allies return home after vanquishing yet another threat to the universe.

The dark god forms into a terrible masked giant (namedVoid Termina), but Kirby uses a special power with his allies in the form of theStar Allies Sparkler to battle it with. The fight is long and hard, but in the process, Kirby and his allies make their way into Void Termina's body and free Hyness and the Mage-Sisters from its grasp. After sustaining massive damage, Void Termina assumes its true form, and the allies battle it one more time. Kirby finishes it off by engaging in a prolonged beam clash with the dark god, and finishes by summoning all of his allies to attack the beast at once, destroying it utterly. Kirby and his allies escape as Void Termina's death causes the world they were fighting on to shatter. Kirby is knocked out by the debris but wakes up in outer space along with the allies he had just fought with. Together, they ride aWarp Star back to Popstar, having vanquished yet another great evil from the universe.

Characters[edit]

Characters inKirby Star Allies
CharacterRole
Protagonists
As usual, Kirby takes on the role of main protagonist and playable character in theStory Mode, in addition to other peripheral modes. He sets off on a journey after theJamba Heart fragments rain down across the universe and disturb the peace to find their source and put a stop to the chaos. Along the way, Kirby utilizes a new power bestowed upon him that allows him to turn his enemies intoallies.
When the dark hearts rain down ontoPopstar, King Dedede is among the first affected by them, which causes him to once again steal as much food fromDream Land as possible to gorge on it himself. Kirby and his allies have to barge intoCastle Dedede and defeat the gluttonous king, who uses the power of the dark heart to turn beefy during his fight. Once defeated, King Dedede is freed from the heart's influence and joins Kirby on his quest.
Along with King Dedede, Meta Knight is affected by the falling hearts, giving in to his older tendencies as Kirby's opponent rather than his ally. He meets Kirby's team at theSacred Square on Popstar and challenges them to a duel, splitting into multiple copies of himself during the battle. Like Dedede, Meta Knight is freed from the heart's influence and joins Kirby after his defeat.
In this title, Kirby gains the ability to turn what would normally be his enemies into his most stalwart allies usingFriend Hearts. He can also call upon help from more prominent characters from his earlier adventures by visitingDream Palaces. In addition to their role in the story mode, each of these additional characters gets their own chance to be the main star inGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go!
Antagonists
Francisca,Flamberge, andZan Partizanne are the three generals of magic who hail fromJambandra and scour the universe in search of the lost dark hearts. They are devoutly loyal toHyness and frequently clash with Kirby and his team after arriving with one of theirJambastions at Popstar.
A mad wizard who was banished to the edge of the galaxy, and plotted a scheme to free thegreat evil sealed within the Jamba Heart. His incantation broke the seal on the heart, but it also unintentionally caused dark hearts to shatter off it and scatter across the universe. As Kirby and his team make their way toThe Divine Terminus, Hyness is unable to completely restore the heart, so after being bested by the Star Allies, he sacrifices himself and The Three Mage-Sisters to complete the heart and unleashVoid Termina onto the universe.
A powerful entity of chaos and destruction with similarities to many other characters that was sealed away long ago by four heroes of yore. Hyness and his subordinates revere Void Termina as their god and sacrifice themselves to bring him back. Kirby and his allies must then use theStar Allies Sparkler to fight and deal the final blow in order to defeat him in a great and lengthy struggle.

Gameplay[edit]

Kirby Star Allies is centered around the mechanic of recruiting certain enemies from stages to become Kirby's friends, who then help him overcome obstacles.

Kirby Star Allies is an action platformer, styled after previous games in the main series, greatly resemblingKirby's Return to Dream Land in its art style, but in HD. The central premise of the game revolves aroundKirby's ability to toss hearts at enemies tobefriend them and turn into allies in the vein of theHelpers fromKirby Super Star andKirby Super Star Ultra. Collecting certain friends will allow Kirby to solve various puzzles, and perform combo attacks calledFriend Abilities. These attacks include combiningCopy Abilities, as well as performing special moves with friends. Once Friends are acquired, they can either be controlled by the CPU or controlled by additional players. In the stages, Kirby and his friends can collectPicture Pieces, which serve as optional collectible items that are used to completeCelebration Pictures.

The main Story Mode has Kirby and his friends traversing four main areas (with a fifth being a final boss level) and visiting stages in each area, unlocking them by clearing them in succession. Optional extra stages can also be unlocked by finding and pressingBig Switches in certain stages. Some of these switches also unlock theDream Palaces at each level, where Kirby can recruit the specialDream Friends if he so wishes.

Control[edit]

There are two control types to choose from in the Control Options. Type A is the default one, and Type B resembles the control inKirby Super Star.

If using a single Joy-Con controller, it must be held horizontally: the Control Stick moves the player character, the four directional buttons (→/↓/↑/←) become A/B/X/Y respectively, and SL and SR function as L/R/ZL/ZR (L/R does nothing if using a single Joy-Con).

Friend Abilities[edit]

In addition to standard Copy Abilities, Kirby and hisFriends can combine their powers together to create distinct moves and abilities. This can be done in a number of different ways, as illustrated in the sections below.

There are several types of Friend Abilities on offer. They fall into one of the three following categories:

Power Effects[edit]

Burning Leo giving Kirby the Sizzle Sword Power Effect
Main article:Power Effect

Elemental enhancements can be applied to neutral-type Copy Abilities (typically those that resemble weapons). To do this, the weapon holder must raise their weapon, then the element wielder must use an elemental attack on the former ally to imbue it. There are five power effects in total, as follows:

  • Blizzard - provided by ice-based attacks
  • Bluster - provided by wind-based attacks
  • Sizzle - provided by fire-based attacks
  • Splash - provided by water-based attacks
  • Zap - provided by electric-based attacks

In addition, weapons which have already been enchanted can be used in turn to enchant other weapons. Certain special attacks (likeGooey's tongue attacks) can also be used to add elemental effects.

Friend attacks[edit]

In addition to the above, there are special one-time moves which the Star Allies can perform by combining specific abilities together, or by simply having the allies involved. These abilities are as follows:

Mid-bosses[edit]

Artwork of Vividria.

Unlike many previous games,Kirby Star Allies features relatively few distinctmid-bosses, at only five (six ifBig Bouncy is included). Each of these five mid-bosses are encountered numerous times throughout the stages and inThe Ultimate Choice, with each having a normal form and a more powerful variant with a black-and-white color palette, additional attacks, and greater HP. Both color palettes can be seen in bothextra and main modes unlike in previous games. With the exception of Mr. Frosty, these mid-bosses can also be recruited as allies after they have been defeated, in addition to being inhaled and swallowed to get their respective Copy Abilities.

The following table lists every mid-boss inKirby Star Allies:

Mid-bosses inKirby Star Allies
NameAppearanceCopy AbilityDescription
Big Bouncy
NoneThis enemy makes scarce appearances throughout the game, never even being encountered inStory Mode. It resembles the giant Bouncy fromKirby 64: The Crystal Shards in how it operates - it doesn't pose a direct threat to Kirby and his friends, simply bouncing in place, but it requires many hits to defeat all while smaller Bouncies spawn near it. Big Bouncy cannot be made into an ally and does not provide any abilities when defeated.
Bonkers

HammerThe powerful mallet-wielding gorilla returns once more to do battle with Kirby. His moves are largely the same as before, though when defeated, he can be recruited as afriend.
Bugzzy

SuplexThe wrestling beetle himself appears for the first time in 3D. His moves are largely the same as before, though he also gains the ability to dive at Kirby from the sky, as well as use the Pinpoint Kick. He can become an ally once defeated.
Chef Kawasaki

CookThis infamous chef returns for the first time in 3D. His attacks include throwing dishes, spinning through the air, and grabbing Kirby with his ladle to cook him up. He can be recruited as an ally once defeated.
Mr. Frosty

IceThe walrus in overalls strikes once again, this time focusing more heavily on his charging attacks and acrobatics. Unlike the others, he cannot be made into an ally, being replaced byChilly if he is hit by aFriend Heart once downed.
Vividria

ArtistThe only newcomer of the bunch, this paintbrush-haired lass can float around the battlefield, and attacks by swiping with her hair, spraying paint around, and painting things to attack Kirby with. She can be made into an ally once defeated.

Bosses[edit]

Artwork of The Three Mage-Sisters.

Kirby Star Allies features 26 distinct bosses (distinct being defined as a boss which has a splash card, not countingGalacta Knight), more than any otherKirby game up to this point. These bosses can be faced in the middle of levels, as opposed to only at the end, which hearkens back to the structure of levels inKirby Super Star andKirby Super Star Ultra. Despite the official number of bosses being so high, most bosses are derived from each-other in some fashion, and can be considered to be tougher forms of previous bosses.

Update history[edit]

Main article:Kirby Star Allies/Update History

Kirby Star Allies was updated from Version 1.0.0 to 4.0.0 during the first year of the game's release, bringing with it minor adjustments for a better gameplay experience, in addition to major additions or bug-fixes. See the main article for the changes that were introduced with each update.

Legacy[edit]

As a culmination of 2DKirby,Kirby Star Allies paid homage to almost every majorKirby game that came before it. However, it still established many new concepts and ideas that would carry over to future games, mostly toKirby and the Forgotten Land, but not only it:

  • The development ofKirby Star Allies was considered as a whole the last main step before the realization of a full 3D mainlineKirby game,Kirby and the Forgotten Land. In particular, Void Termina's battle would become a basis forGorimondo's battle in that game.
  • The usage of titles for bosses, as well as splash screens, would carry over toKirby Fighters 2 andKirby and the Forgotten Land.
  • Several themes of this game were used as inspirations for tracks inKirby and the Forgotten Land, notably "Macho of Dedede" to "Roar of Dedede", "The Clash of Comrades' Blades" to "Sword of the Surviving Guardian", and "Winds across Earthfall" to "Northeast Frost Street".
  • Fully 3D explorable level hubs, in particular the ones from World of Miracles: Planet Popstar and Far-Flung Starlight Heroes, would become the basis of all level hubs inKirby and the Forgotten Land, as well asMerry Magoland inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe.
  • Giving unique names to every individual stage would carry over toKirby and the Forgotten Land.
  • Power-Up Items fromKirby and the Forgotten Land appear to be heavily based on Power-Up Hearts, as both have three different types (health, attack and speed) and use the same icons.
  • The concept of a game mode that happens after the main story of the game, and features different gameplay (Heroes in Another Dimension), would carry over toKirby and the Forgotten Land in the form of theisolated isles of Forgo Dreams, and toKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe in the form ofMagolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler.
  • The concept of an alien language (of the people of Jambastion/Jambandra) would be explored even further inKirby and the Forgotten Land, in the language of thenew world people. In addition, the two languages have some words with similar spellings or origins.
  • The various 3D models of Dream Friends would be reused in various ways in later games, such as cameos inSuper Kirby Clash, as well as Dress-Up Masks inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe.
  • The concept of showing tips while the game loads would carry over toSuper Kirby Clash andKirby Fighters 2, as well toKirby's Dream Buffet (albeit for the latter, unrelated to the game loading).
  • The concept of a secret final boss related to chaos (Void Soul) would be explored even further inKirby and the Forgotten Land, withChaos Elfilis.
