This article is about the game. For the titular band of characters, seeSqueaks.
This article is about the game known in Europe as Kirby: Mouse Attack, and should not be confused with the similarly namedKirby Mass Attack.

Kirby: Squeak Squad (known asKirby: Mouse Attack in Europe, and sometimes spelled without a colon) is a main-seriesKirby game for theNintendo DS released in 2006. It was produced byHAL Laboratory, developed by Flagship and Natsume, and published byNintendo. This game has the same basic look and feel asKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land andKirby & The Amazing Mirror, though the game engine has been updated, providing smoother gameplay. It features a main story mode and fourSub-Games, withone of them being hidden initially.

Kirby: Squeak Squad plays very similarly to other main-series titles, and particularly shares much in common withKirby & The Amazing Mirror, which was likewise developed by Flagship. Unlike that game, however, it uses the level and stage format seen in most otherKirby games, and also features a simplified world map system akin toDyna Blade fromKirby Super Star. Gameplay involves traversing stages while collectingTreasure Chests, which contain various items that may unlock new features or progress the story.

Having been developed for the Nintendo DS, a number of stylus-based features are included, mainly in the form of thebubbles and theCopy Palette, which gives Kirby an inventory of sorts that he can use to store Treasure Chests and other items.Copy Abilities are more complex and can be upgraded further usingAbility Scrolls found in Treasure Chests. Collected items can be viewed in theCollection Room, which acts as a marker of the player's progress toward completion.

In this game, Kirby's preciousStrawberry Shortcake is stolen, and he sets out to find the culprit. He initially assumesKing Dedede was the purloiner, but he soon findsDaroach and theSqueaks—a roaming band of mouse-like thieves—making off with a treasure chest. Kirby comes to believe that his cake is stashed in this particular chest, and chases the Squeaks across the galaxy hoping to reclaim it. When Daroach opens this chest,an ominous evil unexpectedly appears instead of the cake. Kirby defeats this foe, but returns home empty-handed, while the Squeaks disappear. Later, the Squeaks send Kirby another slice of cake as an apology for the fuss they caused, and all is well.

Story[edit]

A scene of Kirby about to eat his cake
Early afternoon in Dream Land,

It's so peaceful even the clouds are drowsy.
And now it's Kirby's favorite time of the day - snack time.
Today's yummy snack is a sweet, fluffy slice of strawberry shortcake!
Time to dig in...
WHOA! The cake Kirby was about to eat has suddenly vanished!
That scrumptious, berry-topped slice of mouth-watering goodness...
No doubt about it! This must be the work of that greedy King Dedede!
Well, there's no time to waste! Gotta get that cake back!
And that's how Kirby's latest fantastic adventure begins...

— Full intro cutscene text.

The story ofKirby: Squeak Squad takes a bit more of a lighthearted and comedic approach than is normal forKirby games, but the overall story arc is nonetheless familiar. It begins on a tranquil day inDream Land, where Kirby is seen about to have a snack out in the middle of a green field. His treat is a piece of lavishly-decoratedStrawberry Shortcake, which thenarration takes great pain to point out is Kirby's obsession, particularly as the cake is snatched away from the hungry puffball's plate by an unseen thief before he can eat it. It takes a moment for Kirby to realize his precious cake has been taken from him, but once he does, he immediately assumes thatKing Dedede is responsible (since it wouldn't be the first time), and heads off toCastle Dedede to teach the greedy King a lesson.

Meta Knight steals the treasure chest containing Dark Nebula to keep Kirby and Daroach from opening it.

On his way to the castle, Kirby runs repeatedly into a strange new band of thieving rodents known as theSqueaks, and battles them for control of the treasure chests he finds. When he finally gets to the castle and trounces King Dedede, he realizes a little too late that Dedede was not responsible for taking Kirby's cake, and when the real thieves show up to steal more stuff, Dedede picks Kirby up and tosses him at them, causing the lot to fall into a deep hole leading toNature Notch. From here, Kirby chases after the Squeaks and their leaderDaroach to try and find the treasure chest that contains his cake. After chasing and battling them through several worlds, Kirby faces off against Daroach directly inIce Island and defeats him, but before he can get his stubby hands on the chest that Daroach was personally keeping,Meta Knight appears and takes the chest for himself. Thinking this chest must be the one with his cake, Kirby runs after Meta Knight and defeats him in the recently-rebuiltHalberd as it takes off out ofSecret Sea.

With Meta Knight defeated, Kirby approaches the chest, but it is taken from him again, this time by Daroach. Daroach wastes no further time and opens it, only to be swallowed in a cloud of black fog emanating from the chest and transform intoDark Daroach. It turns out the chest contained an ancient evil known asDark Nebula, and Meta Knight was trying to safeguard it from Kirby and Daroach. Now that Daroach has been possessed by this villain, Kirby must battle him to knock it out, and then use Daroach'sTriple Star Cane to chase the fleeing Dark Nebula through an asteroid field out inGamble Galaxy and face down this threat. After defeating the monster in its true form, Kirby is free to return home, but he regrets having not found his cake along the way. However, a short time later, the Squeaks send Kirby another cake as a token of apology, and the pink puffball is truly happy at last.

Various Japanese sources give further context to the game's setting, which go unstated in the international versions. Most of the game is set in a location referred to as the Underground World (地下世界,Chika Sekai), which is rumored to be full of unbelievable treasure. The Underground World is accessed via a deep, dark hole known as the Navel of the World (世界のヘソ,Sekai no Heso), which is feared by the residents ofDream Land.[1]

Gameplay[edit]

InKirby: Squeak Squad, Kirby's main objective in each stage is to collect treasure chests and carry them to the goal. Here, he is using the newAnimal ability to reach one buried in dirt.

Due to being a main-series title,Kirby: Squeak Squad plays much like a standardKirby game, with the main objective as always being to travel through stages containing various enemies and obstacles to reach the end or defeat a boss. Kirby has access to all of his standard moves and abilities, including hishover, inhale, slide, andair bullet, among others. He also makes use of hisCopy Ability as usual by inhaling certain enemies or collectingCopy Essences insidebubbles. This game features many of Kirby's classic abilities, but five in particular are new to this game:Animal,Bubble,Metal,Ghost, andTriple Star, with Ghost being a secret unlockable ability and Triple Star being theLast Battle Ability which Kirby uses to fight the main villain at the end.

Kirby: Squeak Squad is largely similar to the precedingGame Boy Advance gamesKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land andKirby & The Amazing Mirror, and even shares many sprites and music arrangements with those games. Despite these similarities, however,Kirby: Squeak Squad has a large number of distinct innovations and features, some of which have not been seen since. The most distinct feature makes use of the Nintendo DS stylus and lower screen, and is referred to as theCopy Palette. This feature allows Kirby to store up to five items inside his stomach, which are contained within bubbles. At any time while playing a stage, Kirby can spit out one of these bubbles or use it by having the player tap the bubbled item with the stylus. Certain bubbled items can also be combined together inside the Copy Palette for various effects. The most important use of this feature is for Kirby to carry the treasure chests he finds within stages to the goal, as these treasure chests are the main collectibles of the game, and contain bonus features for viewing in theCollection Room,Ability Scrolls which can upgrade Kirby's Copy Abilities, key items for advancing the story, and other things.

Kirby: Squeak Squad also has a number of general improvements and additions to the gameplay and stage content. The game's engine allows for much tighter controls than earlier games and also allows Kirby to make greater use of his momentum when performing certain actions, making his movement overall feel smoother. There are also a wider array of stagedevices andhazards, such as foliage that can be cut or burned to reveal secrets, water that can be frozen usingIce to walk on the surface, and metal surfaces that can have electric currents run through them using an electric attack likeSpark. Many returning abilities are given additional attack options as well, with the most notable example being theMagic ability. Lastly, certain abilities can have attributes combined, such as imbuing theSword ability with fire; a feature that would not return to the series untilKirby Star Allies.

Levels[edit]

Kirby: Squeak Squad is broken down into eightlevels which are mostly the same size. Kirby accesses each stage via a simple selection screen, much like the one inDyna Blade fromKirby Super Star. Notably, each level (exceptGamble Galaxy) has a hidden bonus stage that can be unlocked by finding theHidden Door Keys from treasure chests in the main stages. These bonus stages are optional, though they do contain more treasures. Each level is unlocked sequentially after beating theboss of the previous level, and can be traveled to via aWorld Map or sequentially through each stage select screen. The eight levels are as follows:

Copy Abilities[edit]

Kirby: Squeak Squad features a large array of Copy Abilities, five of which are new, and some of which carry over from the previous main-series game:Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. For the most part, the abilities still follow the example ofKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land in that they are relatively simple and straightforward with few moves, though some abilities (most notablyFighter) break this mold, and most abilities can gain additional moves via the Ability Scrolls. As such, the ability complexity in this game can be said to be somewhere betweenKirby's Adventure-style andKirby Super Star-style. Kirby's abilities are as follows:

Enemies[edit]

Like in the previousKirby games, enemies are present to hinder Kirby's progress or to provide him with a copy ability. Most enemies respawn after Kirby walks a certain distance away from their spawn point. Like inKirby & The Amazing Mirror, enemy health bars are shown to the player when Kirby attacks them, but unlike that game, enemy names are not displayed.

Basic enemies[edit]

These enemies do not provide Kirby with anyCopy Ability:

Mid-Bosses[edit]

When progressing through the game,Kirby can fight mid-bosses. Kirby can defeat them by attacking them with his Copy Ability or by spitting projectiles back at them. After Kirby defeats the mid-bosses, he can take their ability by sucking them in or he can attack them, making them explode:

Mid-Bosses inKirby: Squeak Squad
NameAppearanceCopy AbilityDescription
Big Metalun
MetalA big metallic foe, similar to its smaller cousins though with more humanoid features. It is very slow-moving, signaling its intention to move when the top part of it lifts. It can use a rolling attack to attempt to run into Kirby. Once it rams into a wall, objects start falling, giving Kirby projectiles to attack it.
Bonkers
HammerA gorilla-like foe that attempts to hit Kirby with his hammer, creatingDropped Stars that can be spat back, or throws large coconuts at him, which can likewise be inhaled and used to defeat the Mid-Boss.
Box Boxer
FighterThis dog-based Mid-Boss attempts to punch Kirby and may also toss him, causing damage. From time to time, it fires large blasts of energy from its ears, which also serve as a means of defeating it.
Boxy
MagicA cross of a plant and an anthropomorphic gift package, Boxy charges at Kirby or releases smaller gift boxes from its mouth, which Kirby may spit back at it. When not immediately inhaled, these boxes may open up to reveal bombs, which yield theBomb ability, orfood items.
Buboo
BubbleBuboo is a red crab-like creature covered in a cloud of bubbles. It can ram into Kirby by spiraling and maneuvering. It can also spawn bubbles that are projectiles for Kirby to use. If it gets damaged consecutively enough times, it may lose all its bubbles and frantically scatter on the ground, releasing more bubbles for Kirby to use.
Gao Gao
AnimalGao Gao is a large mustelid-like creature. It can spin rapidly, attacking Kirby with its sharp claws. Meanwhile, stars form around it, allowing Kirby to use them as projectiles if Kirby lacks a copy ability. After it spins, it is dizzy and stunned for a while. Another attack it can do is by spinning and flying into the air, then drilling into the ground where Kirby can stand. Its basic maneuvers include jumping forward or backward.
Mr. Frosty
IceA walrus-like enemy wearing overalls that charges at Kirby or tosses ice cubes of two sizes at him, which can be used as ammunition to defeat him.
Tedhaun
GhostThis mid-boss cannot be encountered without completing theGhost Medal. Once it appears, it replaces existing mid-bosses. This mid-boss is the only creature in the game that possesses the extremely rare Ghost ability. It has mini versions of itself that it orders to attack, which can be used as projectiles. If Kirby comes too close to Tedhaun, the mid-boss grabs him and waits until a mini version collides with Kirby. Then, Tedhaun throws Kirby, damaging him.

The Squeaks[edit]

At regular intervals, Kirby will need to battle the Squeaks for control of certain Treasure Chests. Here, Kirby will need to wrangle a large chest away fromStoro before he gets away with it.
Main article:Squeaks

If Kirby obtains a big treasure chest, theSqueaks appear. They can take the treasure chest and then go to their hideout. If Kirby does not enter their base in time, it closes down. Kirby can fight the Squeaks in or out of their hideout. The Squeaks flinch from all attacks, but attacking them with fire, ice, and electric attacks add an elemental effect. When they are attacked, they may release food. When they are brought down, Kirby can continue attacking them to make them release more food, but they do not receive damage. However, when they are in the base, they can go into an angry state after they have been brought down once. When they are in an angry state, they cannot flinch.

The Squeakers act like normal enemies. However, when they are defeated, they may release food. They are also capable of taking treasure chests, especially when no other Squeaks are around. Kirby will be forced to drop a treasure chest every time a member of the Squeaks attacks him, and will need to re-collect it quickly or have it stolen. If Kirby enters their base with no Squeaks present, the inside may be a room containing a few items or some Squeakers. However, once he exits outside the base, they reappear.

The Squeaks
NameAppearanceDescription
YellowSqueakers
Yellow Squeakers do not attack other than jumping.
GreenSqueakers
Green Squeakers throw bombs at Kirby.
BlueSqueakers
Blue Squeakers throw bombs, like the Green Squeakers, but their bombs are much bigger.
Doc
The smartest of the gang, Doc rides in a U.F.O., making him the only flying Squeak aside from Daroach. His attacks involve his U.F.O, which can shoot lasers and drop bombs. However, he has the lowest HP of all the mid-bosses. He is also the only Squeak aside from Daroach to be fought as a boss twice. If sufficiently roughed-up, Doc may drop a laser gun, which Kirby can swallow to gain the Laser ability. Kirby might even be able to swallow his U.F.O given the right circumstances.
Spinni
Spinni is the most agile of the Squeaks. Unlike the other Squeaks, he can swim and jump multiple times. Usually, when Kirby is against Spinni, the encounter involves a race to get the chest first. Spinni can swipe at Kirby with his claw or throw a ninja star. When Spinni is stunned, his weapons can be dropped: the ninja stars give Kirby theNinja ability, and the claw weapon gives himAnimal.
Storo
Storo is the strongest of the Squeaks, giving him the most HP and the strongest attacks. However, he is big and slow, making him easy to hit repeatedly. His attacks involve pounding with a hammer or slamming to the ground with his body. Both attacks produce stars, which can be inhaled and thrown at Storo. If Storo is knocked down, he may drop his hammer, which Kirby can swallow for theHammer ability.

Bosses[edit]

Kirby battling Daroach, one of the game's bosses, using the Tornado ability.

Kirby: Squeak Squad's bosses, unlike inKirby & The Amazing Mirror are fought in order, at the end of each level. Before each boss fight, Kirby can receive an ability bubble or another item in a bubble for the fight. Unlike mid-bosses, bosses do not yield an ability upon defeat. After Kirby defeats the boss, a large treasure chest appears. Inside it, Kirby can receive aBoss Battle Badge. Once Kirby collects all the badges, theBoss Endurance is unlocked.

Bosses inKirby: Squeak Squad
NameAppearanceLocationDescription
King Dedede
Prism PlainsKing Dedede is the first boss Kirby has to fight. Unlike the next bosses, King Dedede flinches from each hit, stopping his actions. King Dedede can jump and fly, attempting to run into Kirby. He can also use his hammer to hit Kirby as well. Like in the previous games, King Dedede sports the ability to inhale and spit out Kirby.
Mrs. Moley
Nature NotchMrs. Moley is a large, gray mole that apparently bears relations toMoley, a boss fromKirby & The Amazing Mirror. She sports similar attacks to Moley, such as throwing objects at Kirby. However, there are two holes where she emerges. She can also appear in the background. Once she is in the background, after some time, the glasses in her eyes may shine, and then she makes a big leap. A big shadow appears under Kirby, and Kirby has to dodge Mrs. Moley's body. If her body touches the hard ground, she is stunned for a while. If her body touches one of the two dirt patches, she digs in and resumes her attacks.
Mecha-Kracko
Cushy CloudThis boss fights very similarly toKracko. Like Kracko, it can move around to hit Kirby or dispense enemies for Kirby to use as an ability or a projectile. However, after the first set of HP is depleted,Doc is revealed controlling the machine. Then, Mecha-Kracko removes the original stage while Kirby has to keep flying. Mecha-Kracko replaces the stage with a new one, but with gaps, or a smaller one. Then, it can use new attacks, which can let it surround in electricity or attack below it with electricity.
YadgaineJam JungleThis is the second boss that Doc pilots. Kirby is forced to run continually while fighting this boss. Yadgaine can dig into the ground, throwing out rock fragments that Kirby should dodge. It can also shoot a laser from its mouth. Meanwhile, falling rocks can hurt Kirby, but Kirby can use these rocks to attack Yadgaine if he lacks a Copy Ability. After repeated hits, Yadgaine's claws can break, hindering its ability to dig. When both of its claws are broken, it cannot dig anymore. The final part that breaks is its mouth before it gets destroyed.
Bohboh
Vocal VolcanoBohboh is a fiery owl-like creature with a tanuki tail. It first appears by flying in the background. One of its attacks includes flying around and dropping fireballs which can be used as projectiles. It can also attempt to grab Kirby by charging at him. If it grabs Kirby, it throws him to the lava, hurting him and instantly destroying his Copy Ability in the lava pool. If it misses and hits the ground, it is stunned while rocks fall. The rocks can be a hazard, but Kirby can also use these to attack Bohboh. After this, Bohboh flies slowly with its eyes closed, also vulnerable to attack, until its eyes open.
Daroach
Ice IslandDaroach is the leader of the Squeaks. He performs multiple attacks, one of which include using theTriple Star Cane to throw stars and shooting an ice beam that can hurt or freeze Kirby, respectively. He can also throw bombs at Kirby, but this can be inhaled as well. During the boss fight, Daroach can teleport multiple times to avoid getting hit.
Meta Knight
Secret SeaMeta Knight fights like from his previous battles. He can jump from place to place and defend against some of Kirby's attacks. His primary form of attack involves using hisGalaxia. Unlike in previous games, Meta Knight does not offer a sword to Kirby, so his attacks produceDropped Stars that Kirby can use to hit Meta Knight instead, or gain theSword ability from the dropped stars. Meta Knight can also create a whirlwind that spans almost the whole arena that can catch Kirby and toss him into the air, then slam him to the ground. Meta Knight also has new attacks involving the fire and electric elements, allowing him to create an electric field or shoot fire blasts with his sword.
Dark Daroach
Gamble GalaxyDark Daroach is an alternate form of Daroach with more powerful attacks. His bombs, which are much larger, create fire pillars when they explode. His ice beam is also larger, and creates stars for Kirby to inhale and spit out back at him. The only attack that remains relatively unchanged is the star-throwing attack with his Triple Star Cane.
Dark Nebula
Gamble GalaxyDark Nebula is the final boss in this game. Before fighting it, Kirby must follow a small black star in a stage. At the end, the small black star grows and receives an eye, which forms Dark Nebula. At the beginning of the boss fight, Dark Nebula changes into one of three forms. All forms share attacks that involve shooting stars that inflict an effect of damage depending on Dark Nebula's current form.
  • Fire Form: Dark Nebula can move around in certain erratic angles to run into Kirby. Dark Nebula can also release a giant fireball that, when it touches the ground, releases a giant fire pillar that covers it and the ground.
  • Ice Form: The ice form allows Dark Nebula to move into a circle, trying to hit Kirby with its body. Dark Nebula can also release an ice beam that creates ice on the track, but this attack ignores the edges of the screen. Tornado and Wheel Kirby can use the temporary ice terrain to make his abilities icy.
  • Electric Form: Dark Nebula's movement involves a zig-zag pattern. Its electric attack involves staying at the center, shooting four electric beams towards the corners, and electrifying the borders of the screen.

Unused content[edit]

Main article:Kirby Squeak Squad on TCRF

An unused design for aCopy Ability exists in the game's files called 'Block'. When Kirby has this ability, he gains a hat similar to that ofMirror fromKirby Super Star and gains a staff similar in look to theTriple Star cane. It is unclear how this ability would have functioned.

A couple ofCopy Palette skins and item icons were left unused in the international versions of the game, but were obtainable during a limited-time event in the Japanese version. These designs were distributed exclusively through DS Station pop-up locations at electronics and specialty shops in Japan in 2007, between March 29 and April 4.[2]

There is an unused red variant ofSqueaker who seems to have the same abilities as the green one, although it can double jump. While it doesn’t appear in the main game, it does appear in cutscenes andSub-Games.

Nintendo eShop description[edit]

Float, jump, and battle through eight huge worlds as Kirby takes control of a diabolical band of rodent robbers called the Squeaks! You can expect all of the action from a classic Kirby game, but this time, Kirby's Copy Abilities have been massively boosted.

Not only can you mix and match Copy Abilities by using the stylus to drag them together inside Kirby's belly, but the powers themselves now have the ability to affect the environment as well as foes. For example, you can burn trees and grasses with the Fire ability or freeze water with the Ice ability.

The massive array of Copy Abilities in Kirby: Squeak Squad will appeal to any Kirby fan, and a collection of well-hidden treasure chests to discover will reward players looking to find every last secret.

Trivia[edit]

The birthday notification.
  • Though released afterKirby: Right Back at Ya! concluded its broadcast in most parts of the world,Kirby: Squeak Squad still retains some design influences from the animated series. This is most notable withKing Dedede's design in the game's official artwork, as well as the in-game design ofhis castle (complete with theMonster Delivery System). TheHalberd's design in this game also resembles its appearance inKirby: Right Back at Ya!. To tie in with the game's release, a set ofKirby: Right Back at Ya! trading cards were released in Japan, which included artwork ofAnimal,Magic, andCupid Kirby in the anime's style (as well asPlasma, which did not appear in this game nor the anime).[3]
  • Kirby: Squeak Squad has a notification for the player's birthday set on the console, which features a special illustration ofKirby and theSqueaks, and is the onlyKirby game to note the player's birthday.
  • In this title, whenleft alone for long enough, Kirby will fall asleep and start dreaming of hisshortcake. After a moment, he will wake up and inhale his dream cloud. This happens in the stages, on themap screen and on the file select screen.
  • This game was released asKirby: Squeak Squad in Australia, notKirby: Mouse Attack. However, some later media released in Australia refer to the game asKirby: Mouse Attack, because Australia typically receives Nintendo of Europe's localizations; examples of this includeKirby: Triple Deluxe and theNintendo Music app with the region set to Australia/New Zealand.
  • Due to the establishment of Nintendo of Korea in 2006, this is the first game in theKirby series to receive an in-house Korean localization, reflecting the South Korean government's removal of almost all restrictions against Japanese cultural imports in 2004 (which had been in place since the Korean peninsula's liberation from Japanese colonial rule following the end of World War II in 1945). While several previousKirby games (such asKirby Air Ride[4]) were released in South Korea byDaewon Media, they were not localized into Korean.
