Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition (sometimes referred to asKirby's Dream Collection for short or theKirby 20th Anniversary Special Collection) is a compilation title released for theWii in Japan and the Americas only in 2012, in commemoration of theKirby series'20th anniversary. This collection consists of the first six main-seriesKirby games and contains a large array of bonus features, including a uniquechallenge mode based onKirby's Return to Dream Land and ashowcase of all the games in the series up to that point including information on them, along with other features.
Content overview[edit]
Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition contains a Wii game disc containing ports of a selection of the first six classicKirby games. Also included on the game disc are thirteen new challenge stages based onKirby's Return to Dream Land, an interactive timeline ofKirby's history where one can read about and watch movies related to the variousKirby games, and three episodes of the anime seriesKirby: Right Back at Ya!.
The collection also includes a soundtrack CD featuring tracks from numerousKirby games spanning across the entire series, and a 45-page special collectible book containing various artwork and other behind-the-scenes information and content covering Kirby's history, along with a manual-like booklet giving basic information and controls for each game, and three screenshots from notable moments in the games.
Game Disc[edit]
Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition is split into three main modes:
Classic Titles[edit]

| “ | Big adventures await in these six fan-favorite, classic Kirby titles! | ” | — Main menu description of "Classic Titles". |
The following games are included on the game disc, with all the original content and frame-rates preserved:
| Games inKirby's Dream Collection Special Edition | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Game | Original device | Original release | Notes |
| Game Boy | 1992 | ||
| Nintendo Entertainment System | 1993 | ||
| Game Boy | 1995 | ||
| Super Nintendo Entertainment System | 1996 | Unlike the Virtual Console release, the game can be played using a Wii Remote by itself. | |
| 1997 | Unlike the Virtual Console release, the game can be played using a Wii Remote by itself. The color changes toHyper Zone'sBoss Butch arena made in the previous Virtual Console release are present here. | ||
| Nintendo 64 | 2000 | Unlike the Virtual Console release, the game can be played using a Wii Remote by itself. The secret input to unlock a 100% file cannot be used here because no buttons are mapped to the C-buttons. | |
Four of these games—Kirby's Adventure,Kirby Super Star,Kirby's Dream Land 3, andKirby 64: The Crystal Shards—were already available on the WiiVirtual Console. The emulation is largely identical to those versions.
At launch,Kirby's Dream Land was also already available on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console, makingKirby's Dream Land 2 the only exclusive game in the collection at the time. The Game Boy emulator used for this release is based on the original model, so it does not feature the additional colors and other features available on later Game Boy models and theSuper Game Boy.
All games can be played with a Wii Remote, a Classic Controller, or aNintendo GameCube controller. Like the Virtual Console, all games feature digital manuals accessible through the HOME Menu, and all exceptKirby 64: The Crystal Shards support Suspend Points. Pressing Reset on the HOME Menu will return the player toKirby's Dream Collection Special Edition rather than the title screen of the game being played; to use each game's native reset function, the player must press A, B, 1, and 2 (A, B, L, and R on a Classic Controller or a GameCube controller).
A frame around the borders of the screen can be toggled on or off by pressing + and - simultaneously on a Wii Remote or Classic Controller. With the NES, SNES, and N64 titles, the frame is blue, and only appears in 16:9 due to the 4:3 display of the games in question; with the Game Boy titles, the frame is pink, and appears even in 4:3 due to the Game Boy having a smaller 10:9 display. If the frame is turned off, it will be replaced by black borders.
New Challenge Stages[edit]

| “ | A familiar face from Kirby's Return to Dream Land has built Kirby some special Challenge Stages! | ” | — Main menu description of "New Challenge Stages". |
In addition, aSub-Game exclusive to this collection calledNew Challenge Stages can be played, based on the optional challenge rooms fromKirby's Return to Dream Land. The game has a small story whereMagolor has built a theme park for Kirby to make up for the "fuss" he caused during the events ofKirby's Return to Dream Land.
New Challenge Stages consists of thirteen stages split into three levels, where Kirby gets one or moreCopy Abilities to work with, and must complete the stage while accumulating a high score. Kirby is scored based on how many enemies he has defeated, how much time there is left on the clock, and how many coins he has collected. At the end of the run, Kirby is given a ranking based on his score: from lowest to highest, bronze, silver, gold, and finally platinum. Each level also contains a boss stage, where Kirby races against Magolor and has his choice of copy ability from a selection based on the level he is in.
Unlike inKirby's Return to Dream Land, the player can use a Classic Controller or aGameCube controller to play the challenge stages, and the game supports the GameCube controller's rumble feature. However, this disables motion controls that are normally available with the Wii Remote (such as shaking the controller to charge upSpark).
| Controls | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Action | Wii Remote (Horizontal) | Classic Controller | GameCube Controller |
| Move | + Control Pad | Left Control Stick / + Control Pad | |
| Dash | ← or → twice(Quickly) | ||
| Inhale orAttack | 1 | b / y | B / Y |
| Super Inhale | Inhale while shaking or mashing the Control Pad | Inhale while mashing the Control Pad or Control Stick | |
| Jump | 2 | a / x | A / X |
| Guard | A | L / R | |
| Pause | + | START | |
New Challenge Stages offers three save files, and Kirby's progress is tracked individually in each one; as Kirby's cumulative score across every stage rises, he will be rewarded withtrophies. Once the game is complete, the credits roll, and Magolor bids Kirby farewell.
Kirby's History[edit]

| “ | Let's celebrate Kirby's anniversary by looking back at the history of the Kirby series! | ” | — Main menu description of "Kirby's History". |
Finally, the disc contains an interactiveKirby history timeline where players can view all of the games in theKirby series up until the point of this game's release. The timeline includes worldwide events that happened around the same time theKirby game in question was released. If the player selects a game from the timeline, they can view a short video clip on said game (or play it if it is included on the disc) and can view the box of the game in a panoramic mode, as a theme directly from the game plays. Included along with the history are three episodes from theKirby anime,Kirby: Right Back at Ya! (those episodes beingKirby Comes to Cappy Town,Crusade for the Blade, andWaddle While You Work), as well as a video performance of "Gourmet Race to Green Greens ~ Chamber Music".
Soundtrack CD[edit]
An additional disc is included in the game box, referred to as theKirby's Dream Collection Special Edition Compilation Soundtrack, which is an audio CD. It features 45 tracks, most of which are selected pieces of music from variousKirby games, grouped in chronological order of the games' releases. After the fourKirby's Return to Dream Land tracks, there are three bonus tracks which are rearrangements ofKirby themes arranged specifically for this soundtrack.
Celebration Book[edit]

Trivia[edit]
- In the history menu, Kirby has a number of uniqueidle animations if left alone for long enough. He may wave at the player, admire the item he is standing next to, or fall asleep for a moment before waking up again.
- The Staff Credits section of the Celebration Book renders certain letters in the titles and names of staff in distinct colors. Combining these letters yields the words "KIRBY", "KING DEDEDE", "META KNIGHT", and "WADDLE DEE".
- The Japanese version of the Celebration Book does the same for "KIRBY" and "KING DEDEDE". The last two names, however, come together differently as staff names are inkanji andkana, rather than Latin characters starting withKirby's Dream Land 2. "META KNIGHT" still uses Latin characters (though the "N" is drawn from "MANUAL EDITOR" underKirby's Dream Land 2 rather than Shigenobu Kasai's name underKirby Super Star). However, Waddle Dee's name is put together fromkana, using the name いしかわ じゅん (Jun Ishikawa) underKirby's Dream Land 3, the names あんどう ひろかず (Hirokazu Ando) and みやもと しげる (Shigeru Miyamoto) underKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, and the title of コーディネーター (Coordinator) underKirby's Dream Collection Special Edition.
