King Dedede's Theme
- This article is aboutKing Dedede's theme song. For theDedede's Drum Dash stage, seeDedede's Theme (Dedede's Drum Dash).
"King Dedede's Theme"[1] (originally referred to as"Mt. Dedede"[2]/"Mt. DeDeDe"[3]), or simply"Dedede's Theme"[4], is a musical piece composed byJun Ishikawa which first appeared inKirby's Dream Land. As the name implies, this isKing Dedede's primary theme, though this was not strictly the case until later in theKirby series, as Dedede has been associated with other themes in the past. It's one of the most well-known songs from the series, and it often appears alongside theGourmet Race theme. It has reappeared in many titles sinceKirby's Dream Land, with several changes, rearrangements, and remixes along the way; it has also appeared outside of the video games, such as in theKirby 25th Anniversary Orchestra Concert andThe Sound of Kirby Café 2.
The theme generally consists of two sections, though the second didn't make an appearance untilKirby Super Star. The original one-part version fromKirby's Dream Land has a higher key than most later remixes, which are based on the full version fromKirby Super Star. InKirby Star Allies, a brand new segment is included before the usual two parts, which doubles the song's length; this addition is kept forKirby and the Forgotten Land.
Composition[edit]

In its original appearance, "King Dedede's Theme" plays in natural E-flat minor and 4/4, and is based on a single primary intonation, that being a descending minor third. This intonation can be found in the short dominant intro, and repeatedly throughout the melody, which plays twice in different registers.
FromKirby Super Star onwards, the theme is more frequently featured in C minor and has a new section. This first begins with a minor variation of "Peanut Plains" with more static phrasing. After it reaches its lower point, this continues with the middle section of "Peanut Plains", rhythmically modified once again, before culminating in descending scale-like passages not unlike those from "Kirby's Triumphant Return", after which the base track loops. The descending passages are also occasionally used as an intro, such as in the Super Famicom version ofKirby's Star Stacker.
The new section introduced inKirby Star Allies and brought back inKirby and the Forgotten Land is also based on a more static version of "Peanut Plains", with the rhythmic qualities of theStar Allies version in particular giving a somewhat sassy tone to the composition whereas theForgotten Land version has a more intimidating feel to it.
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby's Dream Land[edit]
InKirby's Dream Land, this theme first appears whenKirby arrives atMt. Dedede, and later in the final boss battle with King Dedede in the boxing ring. Compared to later iterations, it is relatively simple, with only the first section of the piece on loop. It can be found as track 17 in the game'sSound Test.
Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]
InKirby's Dream Land 2, the same track fromKirby's Dream Land reappears for his boss battle inDark Castle - Stage 8. It is more or less identical to the original song, but sounds slightly different due to the differences in the sound engine: the stereo effects are missing, and the bass is slightly more staccato. It can be found as track 12 in the game's Sound Test.
Kirby Super Star[edit]
InKirby Super Star, the final boss battle with King Dedede on Mt. Dedede inSpring Breeze is where his theme first got its second section based on motifs of this game and became the full theme, which has persisted to the present. It is also used during his battle inThe Arena. This version can be found as track 11 in the game'sSound Test, and is namedはるかぜとともに:デデデ戦 (Spring Breeze: VS. Dedede) on Nintendo Mobile.
Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]
InKirby's Dream Land 3, "King Dedede's Theme" is arranged with different instrumentation. This arrangement is used in his boss battle at the end ofIceberg. This version can be found as track 7 in the game's Sound Test.
Kirby's Star Stacker (Super Famicom)[edit]
In theSuper Famicom version ofKirby's Star Stacker, "King Dedede's Theme" is arranged using similar instrumentation toKirby's Dream Land 3, but in 3/4 time with a much faster tempo. This version can be considered the predecessor to "Masked Dedede's Theme".
Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble[edit]
InKirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, a version based on the original version of "King Dedede's Theme" is played inLvl 8-4 during the battle with King Dedede. This version can be found as track 27 in the game's Sound Room.

Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]
InKirby: Canvas Curse, a heavily arranged version of "King Dedede's Theme" plays throughout theCart Run sub-game. The main melody is split into many smaller versions and then played with a slight delay between each one in 6/8 time, except for the second section of the melody, which is played at its usual tempo and pacing. This version is arranged by Jun Ishikawa[5] and can be found as Track 36 in the game's Sound Test under the name"Cart Run".
When the "Old School" sound mode is selected, theKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land arrangement of the track plays in the sub-game instead. Moreover, this version of "King Dedede's Theme" appears during thestaff credits when playing asKing Dedede. This track appears as track 72 in the Sound Test, where it is referred to as"Classic Song 3-28".
Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]
InKirby: Squeak Squad, an arrangement similar to theKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land version of "King Dedede's Theme" is used during the boss battles with King Dedede andMeta Knight. This version can be found as track 20 in the game's Sound Player.
Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]
InKirby Super Star Ultra, "King Dedede's Theme" is arranged with theNintendo DS sound chip, similar to other arranged songs fromKirby Super Star. It's still used during the boss battle with King Dedede inSpring Breeze andThe Arena, in addition to seeing use when battling him inHelper to Hero. This version can be found as track 012 in the game'sSound Test, and also in theKirby Ultra Super Deluxe Original Sound Track, under the nameデデデ大王のテーマ (King Dedede's Theme).
Additionally, the opening cutscene ofRevenge of the King (track 084 in the Sound Test) features an eerie, rhythmically loose arrangement of "King Dedede's Theme" based on its main melody.
- Main article:Masked Dedede's Theme
In Revenge of the King, "King Dedede's Theme" is arranged to create a specific new version associated withMasked Dedede:"Masked Dedede's Theme", also known as "The Masked King" (track 29 onKirby's Dream Collection Special Edition Compilation Soundtrack). It is arranged in a much faster tempo than the original version and appears to take influence from the arrangement of the theme from the Super Famicom version ofKirby's Star Stacker. This version of the theme has reappeared in many later titles, which can be seen on its own page.
- Main article:The King and the Sun
When clearing Revenge of the King, the theme"The King and the Sun" plays in the cutscene of the same name, which is an arrangement of "King Dedede's Theme" in the style of "My Friend and the Sunset". This version can be found as track 088 in the game's Sound Test. The title theme of Revenge of the King (track 085 in the Sound Test) also features an arrangement of "King Dedede's Theme" based on "The King and the Sun".
- "King Dedede's Theme"
Kirby's Epic Yarn[edit]
InKirby's Epic Yarn, an arrangement of "King Dedede's Theme" plays during theboss stage against Dedede inSnow Land. Aside from the re-instrumentation, the theme has no melodic differences from the version first heard inKirby Super Star. This version can be found as track 49 in the game's Tunes.
Kirby Mass Attack[edit]
InKirby Mass Attack, "King Dedede's Theme" is arranged to serve as the main boss theme, and primarily features Hammond organ and square waves, as well as brass. It is titled"Tough Enemy" in theMusic Player.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land[edit]
InKirby's Return to Dream Land, an arrangement of this theme plays inNutty Noon - Stage 5 when Kirby enters theTower of Mid-Bosses there. It is a re-orchestration of the theme at a somewhat higher tempo, though no part of the melody has changed. The arrangement is titled"Crash! Mid-Boss Tower". It was composed byHirokazu Ando,[6] and can be found as track 43 in the game'sSound Test.
Additionally, the originalKirby Super Star version of the theme plays inScope Shot when facing Robo Dedede. This version can be found as Track 91 in the Sound Test.
Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition[edit]
InNew Challenge Stages ofKirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, there is a rare chance of "Crash! Mid-Boss Tower" playing inMagolor Race 1 andMagolor Race 2.
Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]
InKirby: Triple Deluxe'sSub-Game,Dedede's Drum Dash, "Dedede's Theme" (as titled) is arranged to serve as thethird stage music, using melodica and electric bass much like the other tracks in that sub-game. This version can be found as track 059 in the game'sJukebox.
This version can also be heard in the rest areas for Levels 1-5 ofDededetour. Level 6 replaces it with "Crash! Mid-Boss Tower", which also appears as track 111 in the Jukebox.
InKirby Fighters, theKirby's Dream Land 3 version of the theme is reused for theDedede Arena stage. It can be found as track 048 in the game's Jukebox.
Kirby Fighters Deluxe[edit]
- Main article:History of Dedede
InKirby Fighters Deluxe, a retro-styled medley of many of King Dedede's themes, including "Masked Dedede's Theme", "King Dedede's Theme", "Boss" fromKirby's Adventure, and "Vs. Robo Dedede", known as "History of Dedede", appears during the second phase of the battle withTeam DDD64 on the "Very Hard" difficulty. This theme was composed byHirokazu Ando.[7]
As in Kirby Fighters, theKirby's Dream Land 3 version of "King Dedede's Theme" is reused for theDedede Arena stage.
Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe[edit]
InDedede's Drum Dash Deluxe, a new arrangement of "King Dedede's Theme" is used as the game's main theme. It is similar to the version in Dedede's Drum Dash, but uses different instrumentation, has a faster swing tempo, and a small portion of the second section is omitted. This version is simply called"Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe",[8] and was composed byHirokazu Ando.
The version as heard in the original Dedede's Drum Dash also plays during the game's normal staff credits initially accessible from the Options menu or after clearing the first six levels.
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse[edit]
InKirby and the Rainbow Curse, an arrangement of "King Dedede's Theme" can be unlocked by collecting one of theTreasure Chests found in theUp the Big Ol' Tree stage, to then be played in the game'sMusic Room as the third track. It sounds very similar to the arrangement featured inKirby Mass Attack.
Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]
InKirby: Planet Robobot, an orchestral medley of "King Dedede's Theme" and "My Friend and the Sunset" plays during the boss battle ofDedede Clones & D3. Unlike King Dedede's regular theme, which is usually set in 4/4 time signature, this track is entirely composed in 3/4 time instead, likely because "My Friend and the Sunset" is set in 6/8. This track is titled "Dedede's Tridimensional Cannon" on theKirby: Planet Robobot Original Soundtrack, and can be found as track 51 in theKirby: Planet Robobot'sJukebox. The Japanese title of this arrangement is伝導電磁式三連砲:D.D.D. (Electromagnetically Conducted Triple Turret Cannon: D.D.D.). The romaji of 伝導電磁 (electromagnetic conduction) from the track name isdendōdenji, making it a pun on his name.
In addition, the "Cart Run" version fromKirby: Canvas Curse reappears unaltered inKirby: Planet Robobot inRhythm Route - Stage 7 EX and in the Jukebox as track 124, and theDedede's Drum Dash Deluxe arrangement, referred to as"Secret Area: HAL Room (Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe)", plays in both the Other Games menu for said game and in theHAL Room inAccess Ark - Stage 1, also appearing as track 103 in the Jukebox.
Kirby's Blowout Blast[edit]
InKirby's Blowout Blast, "King Dedede's Theme" is arranged in the original higher key fromKirby's Dream Land. Only the first section plays in the battle with King Dedede inLevel 5 (EX), while the second section fromKirby Super Star is added in addition to the first for the battle with King Dedede's Revenge on theSecret Path, still in the original higher key and with other very small musical changes compared to the first arrangement in the game.
An arrangement similar to theDedede's Drum Dash Deluxe title theme plays if King Dedede'samiibo is used. However, this version is subtly different; the timpani at the beginning is removed, and the missing portion of the second section is re-added. This version was composed byHirokazu Ando.[7]
- First battle theme
- Second battle theme
- amiibo theme
Kirby Battle Royale[edit]
InKirby Battle Royale, an arrangement of the theme appears in the Music Collection as"Cake Royale 2" and plays in every cutscene where the focus is on King Dedede duringDedede's Cake Royale. A new and much more aggressive arrangement plays after Kirby defeats the king in the 1-vs-3Battle Arena match. This track appears in the Music Collection as"Cake Royale 10".
Kirby Star Allies[edit]
InKirby Star Allies, an orchestral arrangement of "King Dedede's Theme" plays during his boss battle, with a new segment based on the "Peanut Plains" segment before the usual melody plays. It also features notable usage of electric bass. The track was arranged byHirokazu Ando, and is titled"Macho of Dedede".[9] It can also be found as track 16 in theKirby Star AlliesJukebox.
TheKirby's Blowout Blast arrangement plays in theHAL Room inFruity Forest. On the original soundtrack andNintendo Music, this track is known as"Secret Area: HAL Room (Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe)", mistakenly crediting it as coming fromDedede's Drum Dash Deluxe.
In theClash at Castle Dedede stage and during the battle withGrand Mam, a new arrangement including "A New Wind for Tomorrow" and "King Dedede's Theme" is played. OnNintendo Music, it is titled "For the Brave".
Finally, "History of Dedede" fromKirby Fighters Deluxe is reused to replace "Macho of Dedede" in his boss battle on Soul Melter difficulty ofThe Ultimate Choice. It also plays in Soul Melter EX during the first phase ofParallel Dedede's battle, and appears as track 203 in the Jukebox.
Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn[edit]
InKirby's Extra Epic Yarn, an arrangement of "King Dedede's Theme" serves the same role as the original Wii version, playing during theboss stage against Dedede inSnow Land.
Additionally, an arranged medley of "Gourmet Race" and "King Dedede's Theme" is used for theDedede GogogoSub-Game. It was arranged by either Akihiro Juichiya or Soshiro Hokkai.[10]
Kirby Fighters 2[edit]
InKirby Fighters 2, theKirby's Dream Land 3 arrangement of the theme is reused for the Dedede Arena stage a third time, and is given another arrangement for its Secret Song.
Some parts of the theme are used for "The Battle of Sworn Partners," which plays during the fourth and final chapter fights againstKing Dedede & Meta Knight and serves as the Secret Song for theStage of Destined Rivals in Battle Mode.
A brief snippet of theKirby Super Star section is also incorporated into the music that plays for the Final Chapter prologue, along with "Revenge of Meta Knight (Map)".
Additionally, the theme, along with "Masked Dedede's Theme," is included as part of the theme that plays during the fight againstWaning Crescent Masked Dedede & Waxing Crescent Masked Meta Knight and the regular music for theStage of the Partners. The medley is called "Stage of the Partners Who Shook the Heavens" and was arranged by Hirozaku Ando.[9]
Furthermore, an arrangement of "The King and the Sun" fromKirby Super Star Ultra, which also incorporates "Kirby Fighters 2: The Destined Rivals", appears as the true ending credits theme upon clearing the final chapter ofStory Mode: The Destined Rivals.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land /Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World[edit]
InKirby and the Forgotten Land and itsNintendo Switch 2 Edition, a slightly slower arrangement of the version inKirby Star Allies plays during the fight against King Dedede and the first phase ofForgo Dedede's fight. This version is titled"Roar of Dedede" and can be found as track 50 at theWaddle Live! Corner Stage. It is arranged byYuuta Ogasawara.
Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]
An arrangement similar to that of theKirby and the Rainbow Curse arrangement, albeit sped-up and pitch-shifted to match the version heard inKirby's Dream Land, is used as aBattle Royale song inKirby's Dream Buffet. This arrangement is called"Dedede's Theme (Dream Buffet Ver.)" inNintendo Music, and was done byMegumi Ohara[11]. Oddly, the song is credited in the game files as coming fromKirby Tilt 'n' Tumble. The Nintendo Music listing corroborates this, as it is placed after "It's So Exciting!" (aKirby's Star Stacker arrangement) and before "Buffet Trial" (aKirby Air Ride arrangement).
Additionally, the "King Dedede Medley by HAL Laboratory Dream Band" from theKirby 30th Anniversary Music Festival is unlocked by reaching aGourmet Rank of 135, named "Kirby 30th Music Fest: HAL Laboratory Dream Band Song" in-game. Much like "Green Tree Memories from Kirby" and "Welcome to the New World!", the medley continues to play during the minigame portion of theGourmet Grand Prix, only switching to a different music track for the battle royale.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]
InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, "Crash! Mid-Boss Tower" plays exclusively in the normal route for theTower of Mid-Bosses ofNutty Noon - Stage 5 in Story Mode. It can be found as track 51 in the game'sJukebox.
Additionally, "Macho of Dedede" fromKirby Star Allies plays in the normal route for the Tower of Mid-Bosses inExtra Mode. It can be found as track 165 in the game's Jukebox.
In addition, "Roar of Dedede" fromKirby and the Forgotten Land plays inHR-D3's second phase, which replaces "Guardian Angel: Landia" from the original Wii version. It can be found as track 167 in the game's Jukebox.
Finally, "Stage of the Partners Who Shook the Heavens" fromKirby Fighters 2 plays duringGalacta Knight's first phase if player 1 is King Dedede orMeta Knight. It can be found as track 193 in the game's Jukebox.
Due toScope Shot not returning, theKirby Super Star version does not appear, and is the only theme from the original Wii version to not re-appear in some capacity in the remake.
Kirby Air Riders[edit]
TheSuper Smash Bros. Brawl arrangement appears inKirby Air Riders, making its first appearance in aKirby series game proper. It can be unlocked for purchase in the Miles Shop for use in City Trial and the Music Player by completing the Top Ride Checklist.
In addition, in theVS. BossStadium, "VS. Robo Dedede" incorporates a section of "King Dedede's Theme" before the loop.

"King Dedede's Theme" has been rearranged twice in theSuper Smash Bros. series:

Elements of this theme can be heard in other tracks, such as "Havoc aboard the Halberd", and "Taranza, the Master of Puppetry".
An unreleased arrangement of the theme appears duringMax Flexer's workout in the Japanese version of theFitness Fiend episode inKirby: Right Back at Ya!. The same arrangement can be heard duringKing Dedede's nighttime party in the Japanese version ofPower Ploy.
Starting withKirby: Planet Robobot, theDedede's Drum Dash Deluxe title theme represents its game of origin on thePast Adventures menu.
The "Crash! Mid-Boss Tower" remix fromKirby's Return to Dream Land is featured in the "Kirby Medley" inTaiko no Tatsujin.

"Roar of Dedede" is included on The Sound of Kirby Café - Jazz Style - and The Sound of Kirby Café - Jazz Style Selection - alongside "Sword of the Surviving Guardian" as a part of the medley シャウテッド・ナイツ (Shouted Knights), which was arranged byYuko Komiyama.

Trivia[edit]
- There are two main naming patterns for remixes of King Dedede's Theme in recent games:
- "(subject) of Dedede", based onThe Revenge ("Revenge of Dedede" in Japanese). This is the basis for"History of Dedede","Macho of Dedede", and"Roar of Dedede".
- "Dedede's (subject)" or"(subject): D.D.D." This is the basis for"Dedede's Royal Payback" (in Japanese,"Return to the Throne: D.D.D."),"Dedede's Tridimensional Cannon" (in Japanese,"Electromagnetically Conducted Triple Turret Cannon: D.D.D.") and"Masked and Wild: D.D.D."
- The opening notes of "Roar of Dedede" are nearly identical tothe theme song ofRodan fromDestroy All Monsters. Given that Rodan is a prehistoric bird-like pteranodon, and "Roar of Dedede" is used for the bird-like Dedede under the control of the wild Beast Pack, a connection between the two would be fitting.
- The specific iteration of King Dedede's Theme that has been featured in the mostKirby games is theDedede's Drum Dash Deluxe title screen music, with 11 appearances (its original appearance, as theHAL Room music inKirby: Planet Robobot and as part of thePast Adventures menu in almost every title released sinceKirby: Planet Robobot untilKirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World).
- If not counting the Past Adventures appearances, then theKirby's Dream Land 3 version takes the lead with four appearances (its original appearance, and all threeKirby Fighters titles). TheKirby Super Star,Kirby's Return to Dream Land andKirby and the Forgotten Land versions are the runners-up, having been featured in threeKirby games each: theSuper Star version has made subsequent appearances in bothKirby Air Ride andKirby's Return to Dream Land (Kirby Super Star Ultra is excluded due to this arrangement using a different sound engine), theReturn to Dream Land version has reappeared in bothKirby's Dream Collection Special Edition andKirby: Triple Deluxe (Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe is excluded due to its version being remastered), and theForgotten Land version has made appearances in bothKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe andKirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World.
