Kine

| “ | Under water, Kine can get the job done. Strong currents are no problem! Kine's a great swimmer. | ” | — Kirby's Dream Land 3 Instruction booklet |
Kine is anocean sunfish-like creature and one ofKirby's sixAnimal Friends, making his first appearance inKirby's Dream Land 2. He is distinguished by his bright blue body, wide circular eyes, and gaping mouth, big enough to fit Kirby inside when they travel together. Pairing up Kine with Kirby allows for a number of different methods of attack based on whatCopy Ability the pink puffball has, though these vary heavily in effectiveness.
Kine makes his most prominent appearances inKirby's Dream Land 2,Kirby's Dream Land 3, andKirby Star Allies, where he is a playable character (though always paired up with either Kirby,Gooey, or another Animal Friend). He has appeared in a large number of other games as well, though he rarely makes more than a cameo appearance, and is seldom seen in isolation fromRick andCoo. Kine also has a supporting role in the anime seriesKirby: Right Back at Ya!, where he has the ability to speak in full sentences and develops a crush onTiff.
Characteristics[edit]
Kine bears the distinctive shape of the ocean sunfish: a wide but flat circular blue body, with large circular eyes and a gaping mouth with puckered lips on one side, triangular yellow dorsal and ventral fins, and wide but stubby limbs and tail. This bodily configuration serves him well enough in thewater - where he can swim with great speed - but on land, it leaves him clumsy, only able to hop about slowly. This clumsiness is particularly notable when he is paired up with Kirby and the other Animal Friends in cutscenes, where he is often the last in line, and often snubbed in favor of the typically more versatile Rick and Coo, who can sometimes be seen bullying him. Like the other Animal Friends, Kine is always angling to get Kirby to travel with him, and can be seen sobbing when Kirby picks someone else as a companion. Kine is particularly fond ofapples, and likes to play with them in cutscenes. He also has a tendency to latch onto Kirby using his mouth, whether Kirby wants him to or not.

Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]
Kine makes his first appearance inKirby's Dream Land 2 as one of Kirby's threeAnimal Friends. He is first encountered in the second stage ofRipple Field, whereMaster Green is guarding him, making him the last of the three friends to be found by Kirby. Apart from appearing in a number of stages, the sunfish is also seen in four level intros: in the Ripple Field intro, he unites with Kirby after being fed an apple; inIceberg, Kirby leaves him behind in favor ofRick; in Cloudy Park, he latches onto Kirby while the latter is stuck in a cloud; and finally, inDark Castle, he apparently falls asleep as Kirby and his friends are preparing to enter the castle.
When teamed up with Kine, Kirby is contained inside the sunfish's mouth. Being a fish, the latter is at a disadvantage on land, where he moves slower than other friends and continuously makes small hops as his method of "walking". Despite this, his jumping skills are equal to those of Rick. Kine's main strengths become apparent underwater, however; while paired up with him, Kirby may inhale foes while underwater and is also capable of swimming much faster than usual by repeatedly pressing the A button while diving. This increased swimming speed lets Kirby and Kine bypass strong currents, enabling them to reach areas that are otherwise inaccessible, and makes certain sections of stages easier to survive.
Like other Animal Friends, Kine will enhance any Copy Ability that Kirby possesses while the two are traveling together, turning it into a new, unique power. Unlike other abilities in the game, all of Kine's combination abilities can be used underwater to their full extent.
Combinations[edit]
| Base Ability | Appearance | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Burning | Kine spits large fireballs from his mouth, which slowly travel in a straight line. | |
| Cutter | Lets Kine spit a crescent-shaped laser from his mouth, which grows as it travels further. | |
| Ice | Freezes enemies around Kine. Using the power for too long temporarily turns Kine into an ice cube, paralyzing him. | |
| Needle | Using this power causes Kirby and Kine to grow spikes all around them. | |
| Parasol | A large parasol appears from Kine's mouth, which can be used as a shield for a limited time. | |
| Spark | A light bulb appears from Kine's mouth, which can harm foes and illuminate dark areas, revealing hidden doors. Letting go of the B button launches it forward, exploding when it collides with something or the button is pressed again. | |
| Stone | Lets Kirby assume his stone form inside Kine, making him sink downwards and defeat enemies. |

Kirby's Star Stacker[edit]
Kine returns inKirby's Star Stacker forGame Boy, alongside the other two friends (Rick andCoo) from the previous game. Just like the other animals, he appears as one of the three types of Friend Blocks essential for destroying the various other kinds of blocks. As such, it acts identically to the other two Friend Blocks but requires other Kine blocks for a reaction to take place.
Apart from being an integral gameplay element, the sunfish is also seen in the various "time out" cutscenes between rounds, where he makes small hops while moving like inKirby's Dream Land 2, as well as in three of the pictures unlocked by completing certain modes. Finishing Hard mode shows him and Kirby riding across the sea in pirate costumes, and he is seen together with the other Animal Friends in the pictures awarded for completing Super Hard and Insane!.
Kine also shows up in theSuper Famicom remake ofKirby's Star Stacker, where he appears in the story mode cutscenes and has the same role as a Friend Block in gameplay.
Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]
InKirby's Dream Land 3, Kine makes a reappearance, once again acting as an Animal Friend for Kirby to unite with. He is first located in the third stage ofGrass Land alongside Coo, once more making him one of the final friends to be found. The fish is also seen in the intro ofRipple Field, where he quarrels withChuChu over which of the two gets to stay united with Kirby, as well as theHyper Zone intro, where he, together with the other friends andKing Dedede, watches as Kirby ascends into space.
Up to and including his ability to bypass water currents, Kine acts the same in this game as he does in his debut appearance, but possesses a slightly different array of combination abilities. He is the preferred target of the bluePropeller enemy, causing it to move faster. Abandoning Kine in favor of a different friend causes him to look devastated, tears appearing in his eyes.
A female sunfish namedMine appears in the fifth stage of Grass Land. Reuniting her with her husband, Kine, is required to obtain herHeart Star.
Combinations[edit]
| Base Ability | Appearance | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Burning | Kine spits a ring of fire from his mouth, which slowly travels in a straight line and breaksStar Blocks without stopping. | |
| Clean | While the Y button is held, a plunger protrudes from Kine's mouth. All enemies touched by the plunger will stick to it; these can be pushed into other enemies to harm them or launched as projectiles by letting go of the button. | |
| Cutter | Lets Kine spit a crescent-shaped laser from his mouth, which destroys Star Blocks without stopping and shrinks as it travels further until it has fully disappeared. | |
| Ice | Temporarily turns Kine into an immobile, invincible block of ice that slams onto the ground and freezes all enemies it touches. Using the power while dashing causes him to slide until he thaws. | |
| Needle | Using this power causes Kirby and Kine to grow spikes all around them. | |
| Parasol | Kine turns to face upwards as a large parasol appears from his mouth, which guards him against attacks from above and slows his fall. | |
| Spark | A light bulb appears in Kine's mouth while the Y button is held, which can harm foes and briefly illuminate dark areas, revealing hidden doors and symbols. The bulb breaks after a few seconds, keeping it from giving light; letting go of the button and then activating the ability again fixes it. | |
| Stone | Lets Kirby assume his stone form in Kine's mouth, making the fish face downwards and slam onto the ground. |

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]
Although Kine does not appear in the game proper inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, using theStone-CutterPower Combo sometimes causes Kirby to transform into an invincible sculpture of him upon activating the ability. Unlike the other statues, the Kine form is immobile apart from being able to turn around, both on land and in water. Using the ability again while transformed shatters the sculpture, returning Kirby to his regular form.
Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]
InKirby: Canvas Curse, one of the images that the player can connect the dots to draw in thePaint Panic boss game depicts Kine.
Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]
InKirby Super Star Ultra, Kine, alongside the other friends fromKirby's Dream Land 2, appears as a statue once more, this time being one of the possible results of using theStone ability. The Kine sculpture is completely immobile and behaves identically to all other Stone forms, differing from them only in looks.
Kine also cameos in the sub-gameKirby Card Swipe alongside the other Animal Friends.
Kirby Mass Attack[edit]
Kine makes a cameo in theKirby Mass Attack sub-gameKirby Brawlball, aPinball game withKirby elements. He acts as the "stopper" between the flippers at the bottom of the main playing area, serving as a "safety net" by catching Kirby (the ball) in his mouth and spitting him out again when he would otherwise have fallen through the drain. Afterward, Kine disappears and can only be reactivated by hitting all three mole-like targets on each side of the lower area. Kine is also responsible for bringing a second Kirby into play if the slot machine stops on three Kirbys by spitting the surplus one into the playing field.
Kine also appears in the sub-gameKirby Quest, where he appears alongside Rick and Coo in the "game over" screen.
- InKirby Brawlball, Kine appears as a temporary drain stopper, and shoots Kirby back up should he fall in.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

Kine once more cameos as a Stone transformation inKirby's Return to Dream Land. Instead of receiving his own separate statue, however, he is part of a sculpture consisting of all three of Kirby's original Animal Friends (Kine,Rick, andCoo). As usual, this result only differs from other Stone forms in appearance and size.
InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, the Animal Friends statue from the original is replaced by the one fromKirby Star Allies, depicting Kine, Rick, and Coo in aProtective Bag. There is also aDress-Up Mask based on Kine, unlocked upon completingStamp Rally card #01 inMerry Magoland; this is one of two Dress-Up Masks in the game to have a gameplay effect beyond an aesthetic change, as it replaces the wearer'sWater Gun with theWater ability's Enhanced Water Gun, an effect it shares with theMine Dress-Up Mask. Additionally, a gold statue of Kine, Rick, and Coo appears in Merry Magoland after completing 10missions, which seems to reuse the same pose of the original Animal Friends Stone transformation fromKirby's Return to Dream Land. Kine also makes a brief appearance in an image shown near the end of thestaff credits inMagolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler, in which he can be seen sleeping on a bench in theDream Kingdom.

Kine appears as a stage hazard on the Coo's Forest stage of theKirby Fighters sub-game ofKirby: Triple Deluxe. In this appearance, Kine just flops on the ground, having no special attack that can harm the fighters. Colliding with Kine does 16 damage to the fighters as per with other Animal Friends that appear on the stage.
Kine also appears in twokeychains. The first depicts him with Kirby inKirby's Dream Land 2, and the other shows him and Kirby performing the combination Spark attack inKirby's Dream Land 3.
Lastly, the Stone sculpture featuring Kine fromKirby's Return to Dream Land returns in this game.

- Main article:Rick & Kine & Coo
Kine appears as aDream Friend inKirby Star Allies, rolled together withRick andCoo into a single playable character. Kine appears when swimming, and can use ice powers in the water, though doing this for too long will freeze him. Kine is a much faster swimmer than the other characters, though, on land, he can only flop around. When flopping around on land, he can provide theSplashPower Effect and put out fires. When underwater, he can use his "Ice Kine" power to supply the Blizzard effect, though being able to position properly to grant it to allies can be tricky.
Kine also appears in two of theCelebration Pictures, namely "A Dream Above the Clouds" and "Crazy Mischief in the Stars".
Lastly, Kine appears alongside Rick and Coo in one of Kirby orRocky's Stone transformations, contained inside aProtective Bag. This particular form is always the result whenRock Painter is used on Rick & Kine & Coo.

InKirby: Right Back at Ya![edit]

| ||||||||||||||||
| ||||||||||||||||
Kine is a recurring character in the animeKirby: Right Back at Ya!. He is shown to have a crush onTiff, one ofKirby's friends, with the episodeA Fish Called Kine particularly focusing on this. Kine is portrayed as being somewhat dim-witted and stubborn, but also loving and determined. Unlike in the games, Kine has very little to do with Kirby directly, and is unable to survive for long on land, as would be expected for a fish. He is also somewhat smaller than he is in the games.
In the English dub of "A Fish Called Kine", Kine is mistakenly called a blue surgeon fish, when he is referred to as an ocean sunfish in Japanese. This was corrected in "The Kirby Quiz", where he is referred to as an ocean sunfish in both languages.

In theKirby novel series, Kine appears as a deuteragonist inKirby: Save the Rainbow Islands! together withRick andCoo. He is a resident of theRainbow Islands and one ofKirby'sAnimal Friends.
InKirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!, he comes toDream Land with Rick and Coo to ask Kirby to help find the cause of the drought on the Rainbow Islands. Kine tells that even when it stopped raining in the Rainbow Islands, he andMine didn't struggle as much as other fish due to being trained to live on land. In their search, the group findsPirika, who indicates at an intruder in the clouds as the culprit. Kine sets off to the lake in the cloud with the rest.
When they reach the lake, Kine prepares to jump into it, butGooey stops him, starting a fight. After they flee from the battlefield, the group decides to investigate the lake by sending Kine into it, since he is the most fit for underwater combat. Kine cowers, so Pirika suggests that he will hold Kirby in his mouth so they both could fight, which he agrees to. Kine and Kirby prepare to jump into the lake, but Gooey tosses them onto the tree, making them fall unconscious, and another fight ensues. After Coo wakes Kine and Rick up, the three fight against their controlled friends. After Kirby falls unconscious, Kine sprays water to wake him too.
As they catch a break, Kine and the others listen to Gooey telling his side of the story. Kine notices movement in thepouch, andKing Dedede andMeta Knight break out, continuing the fight. It is cut short after Kirby inhales all the lake water. Kine and Rick run over to Kirby, who is in great pain. Despite their worries, Kirby shortly wakes up. After the rain returns, Kine swims happily in the purified water of the lake. He returns to the land and meets Mine once again.
