TheHydra is a legendaryAir Ride Machine that appears inKirby Air Ride andKirby Air Riders. It is one of the extremely powerful legendary machines in these games, debuting alongside theDragoon. As a legendary machine, it can be used only in the main mode ofCity Trial if all three of its parts have been obtained by a single player. Like theBulk Star, it has an unusual mechanic of usingBoost power as fuel.
Appearance[edit]
The Hydra is the largest machine inKirby Air Ride in terms of lateral width and apparent mass; however, several machines are taller than it. It is composed of a main body in the center, and two large engines, one floating at each of its sides. The main seating area for the rider is a pale green, mostly flat shape. The higher the machine's level of charge, the brighter this seat glows. Extending from the front of the seat is a long, green horn reminiscent of that of a beetle. At either side of the base of this horn, three vertical yellow lines can be observed, vaguely resembling "eyes". A shorter and thicker green spike can be observed protruding from the back of the vehicle. Additionally, two silver spikes can be seen protruding from the front of the Hydra.
Each of the machine's engines are identical, mirrored versions of one another, resembling massive, green horns with a metallic finish curved outwardly from the base that jut forward. These horns are also quite long and exceed the length of the main body. Each also has a spherical bulge at the rear that is lined with numerous large spikes. The bulges at the back each have a large yellow spot at the rear, which expel the machine's apparent means of propulsion. Like the seat, the spots grow brighter the higher the machine's charge. The propulsion appears as large, bright-yellow spheres of energy—perhaps electrical or fiery in nature. If the machine is on the ground, glowing green circles shoot out alongside the aforementioned spheres. While the machine is propelling forward along the ground, the screen will shake at a more violent rate with greater speed, andKirby himself will appear barely able to hang on.
InKirby Air Riders, the Hydra looks essentially identical, though it does have some additional detailing on its central horn and the green protrusion on the back of its main body. However, the exhaust emitted from the Hydra's engines is very different in this game. While it is at rest, a smaller amount of red or yellow flames will be emitted. Whilst the Hydra is in motion, however, it will expel a large amount of blue and red flames from each engine. Upon releasing a boost charge or performing a perfect landing, a brief spark of green flame can be observed around the Hydra. The screen no longer shakes while the Hydra is in use, though it now has a large fiery trail behind itself while it is in motion. This fiery trail is replaced with a trail of smoke at low health, only returning when health is restored above critical levels.

Like its fellow legendary machine, theDragoon, the Hydra can normally be brought into existence only by assembling its three different parts found throughoutCity Trial. These three parts are found only in redboxes in certain locations, as opposed to green or blue boxes, and consist of its central body and two thrusters. Some of the red boxes containing these parts may be found in spots where boxes are not normally found, such as in the middle of the dilapidated houses. In these spots, the red boxes are guaranteed to hold a machine part. These parts consist of the main body and the two engines. The parts are picked up by touching them, like all collectible items in the game, and each part collected appears in the player's heads-up-display. If a player takes damage while holding machine parts, they may drop one or more of them on the ground, where they can be recollected by that player or intercepted by an attacker. The parts are able to appear in roughly half of all city trials.
When one player holds all three parts, a short cutscene of the machine assembling itself will play, and the rider's machine will be replaced with the Hydra. In addition, the city's music will change to "The Legendary Air Ride Machine" until theStadium segment of the trial begins.
Mechanics[edit]

For the Hydra to move at all, the rider must fill up theBoost Charge Gauge by holding A to charge in place. When releasing, the machine does not boost, but rather uses the charge acquired as fuel. The gauge will gradually deplete as it moves forward. It shares this mechanic with theBulk Star, but the Hydra takes longer to charge fully, and its fuel lasts for a vastly greater period of time. The machine's Boost takes over eight full seconds to fill, but can last for several minutes at a time under normal conditions. Despite this, its fuel will disappear if it has a sufficiently bad landing, or if Kirby gains theWheel,Wing, orSleepabilities.
The Hydra's top speed of 124.86 mph (200.95 km/h) is by far the highest in the game, which is also the game's speed cap (other machines can't accelerate over this speed even withPatches). It also has the highest weight, HP, offense and defense ratings in the game, often to the point where the Health Meter is too large to fit on the screen. This makes the Hydra a very dangerous threat, as it can one-shot a lot of vehicles it comes into contact with. On top of that, it has the second fastest acceleration (only to theSwerve Star),[1] as well as above-average turning and gliding. However, it cannot Boost in the traditional sense, and its sheer speed can make it very difficult to control. Although the Hydra machine is extremely durable, it can still be destroyed like any other machine. It is also highly susceptible to stun-locking, a technique that involves repeatedly hitting the vehicle withQuick Spins or theFireworks item in a manner that disables it from performing any action.
How to unlock[edit]
This machine cannot be used inAir Ride mode.
InCity Trial's main mode of play, the Hydra is bestowed upon any player who has assembled its three parts. Unlocking it in City Trial'sFree Run mode, however, requires three different challenges to be completed on thechecklist—each one representing one of the three different parts of the Hydra. Those challenges are as follows:
- Hydra Part X:City Trial: Destroy all of the dilapidated houses!
- Hydra Part Y:Stadium: DESTRUCTION DERBY (All) KO enemies over 150 times!
- Hydra Part Z:Stadium: KIRBY MELEE (All) KO over 1,500 enemies!
Once unlocked in City Trial's Free Run, this machine can be selected in the menu, and is stored in the same basement with the other machines if not selected.
Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]
The Hydra Parts X and Y appear as a collectibletreasure inThe Great Cave Offensive. They are worth 121,300 G, and act as a replacement for the Nunchuks treasure fromKirby Super Star.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]
| “ | A legendary machine! Rampages across the land as the vicious avatar of destruction! | ” | — Hydra's flavor text inKirby Air Riders |

InKirby Air Riders, the Hydra reprises its role fromKirby Air Ride. To use it inCity Trial, a player must assemble its three pieces in a match. Like before, they can be found rarely in red boxes, though they now appear more frequently in the newly introduced rare boxes. Pieces can also spawn on their own around the map (albeit more rarely). When two pieces of the Hydra are collected, they will now stick together and cannot be separated. Additionally, a player can have their pieces knocked out by another, and in most cases, they will directly be given to the attacker that knocked them out. If the Hydra is assembled whilst on another legendary machine (except in the case ofGigantes, which cannot collect items), the prior machine will be left behind and the rider will hop onto the Hydra. Likewise, if a legendary is assembled while on the Hydra, the Hydra will be left idle.
There are some new ways to obtain the Hydra during a match, however. A special island can spawn aboveSkyah that has a full set of legendary pieces on top of it. If a rider can manage to reach this island before anyone else, they can help themselves to an easy Hydra, should that be the machine there. A wild Hydra can also appear as aField Event and will aimlessly roam aroundSkyah. If it is destroyed, it is scattered into its pieces, but if it is weakened, a rider can lock-on and take control of it directly. One can also spawn on top of theHalberd if it appears.
Mechanics[edit]
The Hydra behaves similarly to the previous game, though it has seen some notable changes. The first and most obvious of these are to its charge time, as while it still does take more time than most machines to reach full charge, the amount of time it takes has been drastically reduced. To compensate, the amount of time the Hydra's charge lasts has also been decreased. It retains a top speed of 124 mph (200 km/h) on the ground, which is similarly the speed cap for machines in this game. It also keeps its high HP, defense, and offense, having the highest offense stat of any machine in the game. This offense stat is further compounded by its high speed and extreme weight. It has slow acceleration, though this is not felt as strongly as it could be due to just how fast the machine's top speed is. Despite its weight, it is actually surprisingly competent at gliding, though its maximum air speed is heavily reduced to 37 mph (60 km/h) withKirby. It can stop very quickly and is better at turning while in at high speeds or at a full stop than one might expect. Like theBulk Star, it is punished harshly for bad landings, as they can reset the Hydra's boost gauge and force it to charge back up just to move. The Hydra also can no-longer be stun-locked by another player, and upon switching to it whilst on another machine, it will be granted a full boost gauge. Also like the Bulk Star, it has a boost stat of zero, meaning that no amount ofBoost Patches will affect how it performs in any way.
This machine is completely dominant in any combat-relatedStadium, especiallyDustup Derby andBig Battle, to the level where all other machines (barring perhapsLeo if its user is skilled enough) are encouraged to avoid these at all costs when an opponent has built a Hydra. It can also perform adequately in gliding Stadiums likeAir Glider, though its high weight can prove to be a significant detriment, and it will be outclassed by flight focused machines. Its ludicrous top speed makes it a fantastic choice forDrag Race andOval Circuit, and a good choice forSingle Races too (especially onNebula Belt). In direct opposition to many of the vehicles in the game, the Hydra actually performs worse on tracks that contain a lot of ramps, due to its top speed being severely reduced while it is in the air. This means that in order to optimize the Hydra's speed, it is often best to immediately hold the boost button if the Hydra is in the air to return it to the ground, where it can re-accelerate back to its grounded top speed. Another method one can use to claim victory with the Hydra is to join a different Stadium than one might expect and win by destroying the machines of every other rider.
How to unlock[edit]
Alongside theDragoon, the Hydra is one of the two legendary vehicles that can appear by default in a match ofCity Trial. However, like its previous appearance, it needs to be unlocked by completing three of City Trial'sChecklist challenges in order to be used in itsFree Run. Unlike inKirby Air Ride, the Hydra (once unlocked) can also be used in Free Run and Time Attack modes for bothAir Ride andTop Ride.
- Hydra Part X: Power up all your machine's stats to at least 12 in a single match
- Hydra Part Y: Touch down on all of the floating isles that appear aroundSkyah
- Hydra Part Z: Experience allfield events
Additionally, headwear based on the Hydra, the Hydra Kabuto, can be purchased from theMiles Shop for 7,750Miles.
Road Trip[edit]
In the true ending ofRoad Trip, the Hydra emerges from the ground when it is summoned byNoir Dedede afterGigantes destroys all other regular machines and absorbs them to becomeHyper Gigantes. The player can select it to use it in that battle; if they select theDragoon instead, Noir Dedede rides the Hydra. After the boss is defeated, Noir Dedede uses a fusion of the Hydra and Dragoon to crash into Hyper Gigantes and shoot a beam of light up toGalactic Nova, allowing access to the final stage,Journey's End. At the end of the credits after defeating Galactic Nova, the Hydra can be seen flying overhead.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]
Unlike the Dragoon, the Hydra does not make an appearance as a usable item inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl. It does, however, appear as an obtainable trophy.
