Hammer
- This article is about theCopy Ability. For the item inKirby Air Ride, seeHammer (item).
Hammer is aCopy Ability which providesKirby with a wooden mallet to wield against foes and obstacles. Its mechanics work similar to theSword ability, though it is slower, yet more powerful. First appearing inKirby's Adventure, it is one of Kirby's oldest copy abilities in the series. Oddly, while most Copy Abilities were given a hat inKirby Super Star, Hammer Kirby's sprite remained unaltered, except for the hammer itself. This was changed inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, which depicts Hammer Kirby with a white and blue rope headband closely resemblingRocky's headband, and this version of the hat would become standard going forward.
Hammer is a somewhat rare ability: normally, it can only be obtained from a mid-boss,Bonkers.Kirby and the Forgotten Land is the first game to have a normal enemy who provides Hammer, that beingMookie. There are rare instances across several games of the ability being obtained from other sources, however:Heavy Mole's golden missiles, a discarded hammer fromStoro, a hammer fromMagolor's Calling Shot attack, and other sources such as aCopy Essence can provide it. It is one of the few abilities that can be usedunderwater, and it is also one of the few abilities that can pushstakes into the ground and destroymetal blocks.
Hammer also builds the base of the fighting style ofKing Dedede, Kirby's arch-rival and occasional nemesis. Several descriptions of the ability also imply that Kirby's hammer is from the King himself, which in the cases ofKirby Super Star Ultra,Kirby and the Forgotten Land andKirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World is sometimes a literal statement.
Characteristics[edit]
Hammer is among the original set of Copy Abilities which appeared inKirby's Adventure, and since then has not changed much from its fundamental function and role. In its most basic form, the Hammer ability can be seen as a stronger but slower and lower-range form of theSword ability, allowing Kirby to make an overhead swing or a spinning aerial (or underwater) swing to pound his enemies for massive damage. The hammer can also be used to break away metal blocks and pound stakes, which makes it useful to collect hidden items or access secret chambers. To use this ability effectively, Kirby needs to anticipate when his enemies might strike and hit them in the opportune moment, as any miscalculation will leave him wide open for counterattack. Masters of the Hammer ability can dish out serious damage in a very short amount of time, making Hammer a common pick for completing game modes likeThe Arenaquickly.
Starting withKirby Super Star, Hammer would gain a wider variety of moves, distinguishing it from Sword and other weapon-based abilities. Among these are the ground-covering "Hammer Swing", the boss-slaying fiery upper swing called "Hammer Flip", and the move of last resort: "Hammer Throw", which gives Kirby a strong ranged attack at the expense of the ability itself. Hammer's most common provider andhelper representative is the mid-bossBonkers, making Hammer one of the few abilities which is not typically provided by regular foes.
Appearance[edit]
Unlike most Copy Abilities present inKirby Super Star, Hammer did not get a hat in that game. Its hat would only debut inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land /Kirby: Right Back at Ya!: a rope headband. InKirby: Right Back at Ya! and the ability's icon inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, the headband is completely white, but every other appearance of the headband has it colored light blue and white instead. Moreover, inKirby: Right Back at Ya!, the headband is tied together on Kirby's left side, while in every other appearance it's tied on Kirby's back. The hat has not changed otherwise.
Hammer's hammer has also been consistent design-wise, with only a couple minor differences throughout the years. The hammer's design has always had stars on its faces; although artwork ofKirby's Adventure doesn't depict them, the ability's icon in-game does. The faces themselves are always pink, and the stars yellow, except inKirby: Right Back at Ya!, where the faces are green and the stars red. The hammer is always wooden and brown.

Kirby's Adventure /Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

Kirby's Adventure marks Hammer Kirby's first appearance, and the ability also returns in the game's remake,Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Like its lighter counterpart,Sword, it comes with two different attacks: A heavy swing when used on the ground, and a somersault attack when used in midair or underwater. The icon for the Hammer ability depicts Kirby during a jump, with a big hammer raised into the air and a determined expression on his face. The icon was changed forKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, where it shows Kirby with his headband, holding and swinging a giant mallet with both hands. Hammer deals 10 damage in this title.[1]

Kirby Super Star /Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

Hammer reappears inKirby Super Star and its remakeKirby Super Star Ultra. Like most Copy Abilities, its moveset has been overhauled from its previous incarnation. Aside from regular attacks, the Hammer can now be charged and release a flame attack, which can even light fuses, and it can even be thrown at enemies, which, however, causes Kirby to lose the Hammer ability. The resulting attack performed in midair while running is now Ultra-Giant Swing instead of the standard Giant Swing. Hammer Kirby can also summon Bonkers who then acts as aHelper.
The Hammer ability also plays a somewhat special role during Kirby's fight against Masked Dedede inKirby Super Star Ultra. Before the fight begins, King Dedede offers Kirby a hammer to battle, which is a spoof ofMeta Knight's habit to give Kirby a sword before the battle begins. Kirby can ditch the hammer after collecting it, though, and fight Masked Dedede the regular way. Hammer Kirby makes another appearance during the introduction cutscene ofThe True Arena.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]

The Hammer ability makes its next appearance inKirby & The Amazing Mirror, where it is again one of the rarer Copy Abilities and can be obtained only fromBonkers, after Kirby has defeated him in a duel. Unlike inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, most of Hammer's moveset fromKirby Super Star is intact, removing only Hammer Throw and Ultra-Giant Swing. Kirby can also use a hammer via the very versatileSmash ability, the only disadvantage being that this hammer cannot be used underwater.

Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]
Hammer makes another appearance inKirby: Squeak Squad. Here, it can be dropped occasionally byStoro, in addition toBonkers. Acquiring theAbility Scroll for Hammer grants an additional move, where Kirby can charge his hammer swing, making the hammer bigger before it comes down, dealing additional damage.

Kirby Mass Attack[edit]
Although Copy Abilities don't appear in the game, Hammer appears as one of the "Great" attacks inKirby Quest fromKirby Mass Attack. For the attack, each Kirby runs up to an enemy and hits it with a hammer using theHammer Flip move.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

Hammer makes an appearance inKirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake,Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, obtained primarily fromBonkers. Hammer Kirby features its typical hammer usage moveset, including a hammer throw that will sacrifice Kirby's ability, as well as a few new moves such as the Hammer Twirl. In addition to the standard Hammer ability, in some stages, Kirby may obtain aSuper Ability calledGrand Hammer, obtained fromSuper Bonkers, which can destroy and hit stakes that are particularly large.King Dedede has a moveset very similar to that of Hammer Kirby, though he can perform the Hammer Throw as many times as he wishes without losing the ability.
InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Hammer Flip is chargeable, and can additionally allow the user to move while charging, which comes fromKirby Star Allies, and like the Sizzle element, the hammer is still fiery and can damage enemies while charging. This change also applies toKing Dedede, having a chargeable Dedede Hammer Flip while also being able to move during the charge.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]
Hammer once again returns inKirby: Triple Deluxe, only obtainable from Bonkers and Bonkers DX. It functions much like it did inKirby's Return to Dream Land, but with the Triple Hammer attack removed from Hammer's moveset starting with this game. King Dedede once again uses a very similar moveset, though with a few additional moves to allow him to solve some extra puzzles that Hammer alone could not. Additionally, Hammer Kirby appears as a collectablekeychain, using his sprite fromKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.
Hammer also appears inKirby Fighters as a selectable ability.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe[edit]
Hammer appears as one of the selectable Copy Abilities inKirby Fighters Deluxe, having an identical look and function to its previous appearance.
Hammer Kirby's Rare Outfit replaces his headband with a black-yellow striped one, which are the contrast colors of his original white-blue one. In addition, the Rare Outfit replaces his original wooden hammer with a metal one that makes metal hitting sound effects on impact.
Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Hammer returns as an ability inKirby: Planet Robobot, though it is rather rare. In addition, there is a custom variant of Hammer that makes Kirby resembleKing Dedede, unlockable by scanning Dedede'samiibo in the game. In addition, theTeam Kirby Clash sub-game features a variant of Hammer Kirby calledHammer Lord.
Kirby Battle Royale[edit]
| “ | A big hammer and a headband. That look really suits you! If you've got a hammer, take a swing! Not at me, though! | ” | — Knuckle Joe's comment inKirby Battle Royale |
Hammer is one of the abilities usable inKirby Battle Royale. To obtain it for general use, the player needs to spend 500 Battle Coins, and to use it inDedede's Cake Royale, it needs to be unlocked by obtaining 50 League Points in the Gold League. Hammer Kirby is notable for his attack power compared to other abilities. His Hammer Flip also has two levels of charge - the second one being capable of defeating an opponent in one hit - though it takes some time to charge up.
There are threeadditional pieces of Headgear for the Hammer ability in this game. These are the "Dedede Hammer", the "Toy Hammer", and the "Grand Hammer Replica".

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Hammer returns inKirby Star Allies. While it is largely the same as it was in previous main series titles, the Hammer Flip has been changed somewhat—Kirby can now move and jump once while charging it, similar to the variant in theSmash Bros. ability,Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, andHammer Lord's version. Additionally, the hammer can be charged to several levels before releasing for very high damage output. However, if Kirby charges for too long, the hammer's head will actually break. Even if this happens, Kirby can still swing the handle to deal a very small amount of damage. Afterward, the hammer will repair itself.
Hammer can also be infused with the fivePower Effects: Blizzard, Bluster, Sizzle, Splash, and Zap. Due to this however, Kirby's hammer no longer catches on fire when using Hammer Flip by default. Bonkers has a nearly identical moveset to Hammer Kirby in this game, but much like King Dedede, he has an unlimited number of Hammer Throws. If Hammer Kirby is chosen on the character select screen inThe Ultimate Choice, Hammer Throw can also be used by him infinitely.

Its moveset is largely the same as before, though like in previousKirby Fighters games, the Hammer Throw technique cannot be used. In addition, the Hammer ability comes with two unlockable Rare Hats, those being the Black-Steel Hammer fromKirby Fighters Deluxe and the Masked Dedede Hammer 2.0 fromSuper Kirby Clash.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land /Kirby and the Forgotten Land - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World[edit]

The Hammer ability returns inKirby and the Forgotten Land andKirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World. This is the first game to introduce a regular enemy that provides Hammer:Mookie. Like in previous games, Kirby can use the Hammer ability to pound downstakes to solve puzzles and can also make use of the Giant Swing and Hammer Flip as attacks. Unlike in previous games, however, the Hammer Twirl, Hammer Swing, Ultra-Giant Swing, Hammer Throw, and Underwater Wheel techniques are no longer available, and Hammer can no longer be used to breakMetal Blocks. To compensate, the ability has new techniques that can be used. In addition, Hammer can alsoevolve into one of three additional forms - those beingToy Hammer,Wild Hammer, andMasked Hammer - or it can be powered up, atWaddle Dee's Weapons Shop.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

In theSuper Smash Bros. series, starting withSuper Smash Bros. Melee, Kirby uses his Hammer as his forward special attack. The exact nature of the hammer attack varies between games, as follows:
- InSuper Smash Bros. Melee, Kirby can use a single lateral hammer swing on the ground, or perform a Giant Swing in the air.
- InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, Kirby can use a single lateral hammer swing on the ground, or two such swings in the air.
- InSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, Kirby uses the Hammer Flip technique, allowing him to charge his hammer with flame and then release it later for a big hit, though severely limiting his movement options and potentially damaging himself while charging it. This form of Hammer Flip would later become the standard version in theKirby series itself, starting withKirby Star Allies, with minor adjustments.
Other[edit]
- Main article:Hammer Lord
Hammer also appears in theKirby Clash series asHammer Lord. Functionally, these two abilities are very similar, though with a few key differences. Hammer Lord is much slower on his feet than standard Hammer Kirby, and cannothover very well. Additionally, Hammer Lord's Hammer Flip can be charged to three levels of power to inflict massive damage, which can only be topped by theTeam Meteor. Lastly, Hammer Lord cannot use the Hammer Throw technique.
While Hammer does not appear as a copy ability inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards,Kirby Air Ride andKirby Air Riders, King Dedede wields his trademark hammer as a playable character.
Hammer Kirby was going to appear inthe cancelledKirby game for the Nintendo GameCube. In that game, its hat was going to be redesigned into a construction helmet. However, the idea was abandoned along with the game.

The Hammer ability makes three appearances in the anime seriesKirby: Right Back at Ya!, in the episodesDedede's Pet Threat,Goin' Bonkers, andShell-Shocked. It functions largely the same as it does in the games, though Kirby gains a solely white knotted headband.Kirby gains this ability byinhaling a hammer, whether it be fromKing Dedede orBonkers. When Kirby gains this ability, he is typically able to dispatch his opponent(s) easily - which matches the power of the Hammer ability in the games - though it takes several concerted swings and then a Hammer Throw to crack the shell of the potentMaimaigon.
Notably, during Hammer Kirby's transformation sequence, he first cycles through several different weapons before finally landing on the hammer. These weapons include a serrated voulge, a trident with extra spikes, a battleaxe, a battle-rake, a demi-lune, and a quarterstaff.

In theKirby novel series, the Hammer ability makes an appearance inKirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!!, inKirby Fighters: The Destined Rivals!! and inKirby: Snowy Mountain Nights are Eventful!.
InKirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!!, one of theKirby copies created by theKirby Printer holds it. Kirby andWaddle Dee face him andWhip Kirby during a match ofOre Express atDedede's Cake Royale. Waddle Dee takes advantage of Hammer Kirby's slow movement by repeatedly tossing the ore out of his reach and making him dizzy. After Kirby and Waddle Dee make a comeback, Hammer Kirby jumps on the train which carry him to the distance, leaving Kirby and Waddle Dee to wonder why he did that. Later, the Hammer ability shows up again in the novel, which Kirby gains by inhalingBonkers. Kirby uses it to try and destroy the Kirby Printer, but seemingly to no avail. When Kirby andKing Dedede work together, they successfully strike and destroy the printer with their hammers.
InKirby Fighters: The Destined Rivals!!, the Hammer ability is wielded by one of the Kirby copies created by the Buddy Fighters Tower, who fights Kirby and Waddle Dee at theWaddle Dee Train Tracks on the 35th floor. Kirby shoots water waves at Hammer Kirby that he is too slow to dodge. After aStaff Kirby copy intervenes in their fight, it seems like he and Hammer Kirby may win. However, as they start to celebrate, aWaddle Dee Train hits them both, sending them flying and making them faint.
InKirby: Snowy Mountain Nights are Eventful!, Kirby briefly obtains the Hammer ability from Bonkers to fightFrancisca in the ice palace in the climax of the novel. However, he barely manages to attack her due to lack of energy from not having eaten much lately. Soon after, Bandana Waddle Dee brings him some food, which energizes him. However, before they can properly fight, the other twoMage-Sisters appear. Once everything is settled, Kirby drops the ability and frees Bonkers.
