— Gryll in the Super Famicom version ofKirby's Star Stacker (unofficial translation)

Gryll[1][2] is the final boss of the Super Famicom version ofKirby's Star Stacker. This boss appears after the credits roll in the main game, as a surprise encounter if Kirby managed to beat all his previous foes without losing once, and is the most difficult challenge in the game. Gryll appears to be some sort of space-traveling witch who flies around on a broomstick.

Gryll has three onion minions namedSalt[Japanese title],Pepper[Japanese title], andSugar[Japanese title], which they bring with them to challenge Kirby. Unlike the other opponents, Kirby battles Gryll in outer space. Gryll attacks Kirby by thwacking him with their broomstick.

Gryll's exact gender is unknown, as none of their appearances use gendered terms (which is much more often the case in the series' Japanese text). Despite their witch-like appearance, which makes them have a more feminine look, the developers don't appear to consider Gryll female, as in aMiiverse post it was said thatQueen Sectonia is the series' second female final boss, withDrawcia being the first.[3] This is not due to the fact that Gryll's game never originally released outside of Japan, as the same post in Japanese has the same statement.[4] Moreover, the developers do consider Gryll a proper final boss, as they appeared alongside many others in the "Bad Boss Brothers"Celebration Picture ofKirby Star Allies.

Characteristics[edit]

Gryll appears to be an onion-shaped being with floating white hands, a spiky tuft of messy, light green hair and large, green eyes. They wear a purple and yellow-striped witch hat that has a smallStar Block on the tip and a pair of red curled toe boots with white cuffs.

Gryll's minions also appear to be small onion-like creatures, with red feet and small, round white hands. Each can be distinguished by their appearance: Salt has beady eyes and a green hair tuft that splits in two, Pepper has large, wide eyes and its hair tuft has a wavy hairstyle, and Sugar has its eyes always closed in a sleepy manner and has a smaller hair strand.

Kirby's Star Stacker (Super Famicom)[edit]

In-game cutscene where Gryll appears to challenge Kirby fromKirby's Star Stacker (Super Famicom).

Gryll makes their debut in theKirby's Star Stacker remake as the surprise final boss in theStory Mode. They are fought after thestaff credits ifKirby didn't lose a single match prior, and their only motivation seems to be challenging Kirby to test his skill. The round is very similar to the prior one withKing Dedede, with the difficulty set at "Super Hard" on the Amateur setting and "Insane" on Professional difficulty. The board also starts piled fairly high with blocks, with more than half of them being Hard Blocks. After clearing the round, Gryll admits defeat amidst a pile of blocks and the game is truly over.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

Gryll makes a cameo as aCharacter Treat inKirby's Dream Buffet.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Gryll appears as a primaryspirit inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, and can be obtained viaWorld of Light, by battling the spirit in theSpirit Board, or by purchasing the spirit from theShop. Gryll is a novice level grab-type spirit, with level 1 stats of 527 attack and 431 defense, plus 2,636 attack and 2,156 defense when leveled up to level 99. The spirit has one support slot. The Spirit battle pits the player against aJigglypuff.

Trivia[edit]

Concept art ofNightmare and Gryll-inspired gear for Beam Mage.
  • On page 58 of the Japan-exclusive art book20th Anniversary Kirby Pupupu Encyclopedia, Gryll is referred to in English as "Grill". That is because when the book was published in 2012, Gryll had no official English name, and "Grill" is a simple romanization of their Japanese name (グリル).
  • A Gryll-inspired gear forBeam Mage was considered forSuper Kirby Clash, but it was scrapped.
  • Gryll introduces themself with "Hey, hey, hey!" the same wayMarx does, though this is likely a coincidence.
  • Gryll is occasionally portrayed with arms, but it is very inconsistent. The only times they have been portrayed with arms are in their introduction cutscene and in the Bad Boss BrothersCelebration Picture fromKirby Star Allies. Despite their introduction cutscene portraying them with arms, Gryll's board background gives them floating hands.
