| Notice: It has been suggested that this page or section be split intoStadium: Drag Race. | |
|---|---|
| Please discuss this on the talk page. Reason: Derived music from "Green Greens", returning inKirby Air Riders, see more info in talk page |
"Green Greens" is among the first pieces of music composed for theKirby series, first appearing as the theme for theGreen Greens stage inKirby's Dream Land, and reappearing in many games since then. It has been arranged, re-orchestrated, and remastered several times throughout the series, including being incorporated into other themes and tracks. However, it can often also be heard in its original form in many titles, particularly as an Easter egg inHAL Rooms, or in trailers for the games.
This theme has become associated withKirby as a character, and is often paired with "Kirby's Triumphant Return".
Composition[edit]

Green Greens is a very upbeat theme that starts in the key of C major. The intro starts with a few G notes, then gets to the first portion of the song, it repeats this portion again, and then moves on to the next portion. When it gets to the second portion, it turns to C minor. It then goes through a C-D-E, D-E-F progression twice, then the very first stage theme of the series loops.
This theme is also a popular motif in other themes in theKirby series as well.
Game appearances[edit]
The following is a list of major appearances of "Green Greens". It is not an exhaustive list, as parts of certain songs may sound like the theme, but it's not always clear if it's a coincidence or a knowing nod to it.
Kirby's Dream Land[edit]
As mentioned above, the "Green Greens" theme is the stage music forGreen Greens, from which it gets its name. This original version was composed byJun Ishikawa, who has since gone on to compose much of the music for the series. It's also listed as Music 01 (Music 13 is an intro-less version) in the game'sSound Test.
Kirby's Adventure[edit]
InKirby's Adventure, the theme reappears in the throwback stageRainbow Resort - Stage 6, though it also plays for both games'staff credits sequence. In the former, it sounds very similar to the originalKirby's Dream Land version, but pitched a step down. This track is listed as Music 03 (with its intro) and Music 04 (without its intro) in the game'sSound Test.
Kirby's Pinball Land[edit]
InKirby's Pinball Land, "Green Greens" is rearranged for thePoppy Brothers' Land stage inKirby's Pinball Land.
Kirby Super Star[edit]
A new arrangement of "Green Greens" plays in theGreen Greens stage ofSpring Breeze and can be found as Music 05 in theSound Test. On theKirby Ultra Super Deluxe Original Sound Track, it is directly titled"GREEN GREENS".
- Main article:Crystal Area
"Green Greens" is the basis of the theme for theCrystal andGarden areas ofThe Great Cave Offensive. This version is notable for being the first of many "Green Greens" arrangements to feature "Kirby's Triumphant Return". On theKirby Ultra Super Deluxe Original Sound Track, it is named水晶の畑エリア (Crystal Area). It appears as Music 37 in the Sound Test.
An excerpt of "Green Greens" is featured in the latter half of "Kirby's Triumphant Return", the theme for the eponymous ending cutscene ofMilky Way Wishes. Finally, "Green Greens" appears in "Milky Way Wishes: Staff Credits". These themes are Music 55 and 65 in the Sound Test, respectively.

Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble[edit]
An arrangement of "Green Greens" is used as the theme for the minigameKirby's Hurdle Race. It also appears as part of a medley of other tracks from the game that make up the credits theme, sounding almost identical to that version, but ending differently to transition to "Sky Courses". This medley also concludes with a reprise of "Green Greens", with some variations and a suitable resolution.
The faithful arrangement used for Kirby's Hurdle Race is listed as Music 21 in the game'sSound Room. Interestingly, the credits medley is not listed at all.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]
On the Green Greens stage, an orchestral version of "Green Greens" plays, which incorporates "Kirby's Triumphant Return" into it. It is arranged by Hirokazu Ando, and simply named "Green Greens". This arrangement has gone on to appear in laterSmash Bros. titles starting withfor 3DS / Wii U.

While "Green Greens" didn't get a standalone arrangement in this game, much like inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, it does appear in the new"Staff Credits - Kirby's Dream Land" arrangement, due to it featuring "Milky Way Wishes: Staff Credits" and, notably, predominantly using its "Green Greens" section.
In addition, all the tracks from previousSuper Smash Bros. games that had "Green Greens" in some form return in this game, now being able to be played in anyKirby stage, and, as of the8.1.0 update, Battlefield, Small Battlefield, Big Battlefield, and Final Destination. The only changes involve the original Green Greens fromKirby's Dream Land getting incorporated into the "Kirby Retro Medley", and the "Green Greens Ver. 2" arrangement being re-named"Green Greens (for 3DS / Wii U)".
Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]
InKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, the theme got a new rearrangement, now in its original key (unlike in the originalKirby's Adventure). Kirby Star Allies[edit]
The "Green Greens" theme makes multiple appearances inKirby Star Allies:
- The theme of the first stage of the game,Green Gardens, as well asFruity Forest and the last area ofDonut Dome, is an arrangement of "Re: Green Greens". Notably, "Green Greens" proper follows after a full version of "Re: Green Greens" plays out.
- After allBig Switches are pressed (aside from the one mentioned in Extra Planet δ), a jingle plays with a short variation of "Green Greens". This jingle also plays on the menu screen at the start of a new save file after all post-launch Dream Friends have been revealed, in addition to playing after clearing the Soul Melter difficulty inThe Ultimate Choice. It is fittingly called"All Big Switches Pressed!".[7]
- The theme of theJambandra Base andThe Divine Terminus stages,"Scarred Lands of Dreams and New Greens",[7] is a slow-paced, sinister sounding arrangement of the "Green Greens" theme, that predominantly features violins. This version is also arranged by Hirokazu Ando.
- The original version fromKirby's Dream Land is reused inExtra Eclair andExtra Planet δ. This version ends up playing in mostGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go! routes, in those where rooms in which the theme plays are reused.
- At the very end of Extra Planet δ, aBig Switch can be pressed to make a giant golden statue of Kirby appear in the background. As the statue rises, the player's controller (if it has HD Rumble turned on) will rumble in a way that it actually plays the first portion of "Green Greens", entirely separate from the game's audio. This does not occur if the game is played in Handheld Mode with both Joy-Con controllers attached to the system.
- The fanfare for collecting a Grand Sun Stone fromKirby: Triple Deluxe is reused when clearing Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!. It got a new title in this game, which is"Guest Star ???? Cleared".[7]
- The "Green Stories" arrangement fromTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe is reused during the final results screen in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!.
- The "Green Greens" section of "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" plays as one of the parts of "Supreme Ruler's Coronation - OVERLORD".

- The "Green Greens" section of "VS. Star Dream" plays as one of the parts of "A Deus Ex Machina from Childhood".
- The Ultimate Choice's title screen theme is an intense arrangement of the theme, primarily featuring electric guitars, trumpets, and drums. It is arranged byYuuta Ogasawara, and is titled"Your Preferred Spiciness for the Ultimate Choice".[7]
- The theme of the fourth phase of the battle againstVoid Termina opens up with an electric guitar cover of the "Green Greens" theme, similar to the "Scarred Lands of Dreams and New Greens" version. This track is arranged by Hirokazu Ando once again, and is called"Suite: The Star-Conquering Traveler (Movement 4: The Birth of Hope)".
- When battling againstVoid, a variation of "Movement 4: The Birth of Hope" plays, which features the "Green Greens" theme even more, going as far as to imitate the original version of the track in chiptune. This version is called"Suite: The Star-Conquering Traveler (Closing Movement: The Twinkling Star)".
- After reaching100% completion, there is a chance that the main menu theme may be changed to the "Green Greens" arrangement fromKirby Air Ride.

In the game's Training Mode and Online waiting rooms, a medley of "Training" fromKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, "Green Greens" and "Ripple Star: Stage Select" plays, named "Training with Rivals"[7]. This medley has two distinct versions: an orchestral and chiptune version; the game selects one of the two at random to play, with the regular version having a higher chance of playing. The regular version is arranged byYuki Shimooka.[8]
Finally, an intense arrangement of the theme plays in most of the Item Rooms in the Final Chapter ofStory Mode: The Destined Rivals up until the 44th floor's item room.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land[edit]
InKirby and the Forgotten Land, a new arrangement of the theme, titled"Welcome Back, Kirby", plays when the player is inKirby's House. It also features part of the melody of "Running Through the New World" in the background and incorporates "Kirby's Triumphant Return" near the end of the loop. This version is arranged by Hirokazu Ando and can be found as track 42 at theWaddle Live! Corner Stage.
Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]
InKirby's Dream Buffet, a brand-new arrangement of the theme has a possibility of playing duringBattle Royale matches, named"Green Greens Buffet"[7]. This arrangement is composed byHirokazu Ando[9][10]. Another possible track that can play in a Battle Royale is "Super Battle Royale", an arrangement of "Ultra-Super Boss Battle" fromKirby's Return to Dream Land, which in turn briefly quotes "Green Greens".
The original version fromKirby's Dream Land, referred to as"Kirby's Dream Land: Memorial Song 1" in-game, can be unlocked for races andFree Rolling upon reachingGourmet Rank 44.
The "Green Stories" arrangement fromTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe, referred to as"Super Kirby Clash: Bonus Song 1" in-game, can be unlocked for races and Free Rolling if the player has save data fromSuper Kirby Clash on their system.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]
InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, a remastered version of "Green Greens (Return to Dream Land)" reprises its roles in the same circumstances. A remastered version of "Green Greens" only plays in theItem Challenge, as theHAL Rooms now use different background music. Both arrangements are present in theJukebox as tracks 24 and 60.
Additionally, there are additional arrangements of the theme that are exclusive toReturn to Dream Land Deluxe.
- "Green Greens Buffet" fromKirby's Dream Buffet plays in "Secret Area: HAL Room (Kirby's Dream Buffet 1)" with "Kirby's Dream Buffet" and "Love, Love, Alivel", accessible as track 16 in the Jukebox after discovering the HAL Room for the first time.
- The arrangement of "Green Greens" from "Return to Dream Land" plays as a part of the final section of "Crossing into the Parallel with You".
- In "The Merry, Magical World of Magolor!", a "Green Greens" section plays after the sub-game music excerpts near the end of the track.
- "Supreme Ruler's Coronation - OVERLORD" fromKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World[edit]
InKirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World, in addition to "Welcome Back, Kirby" reprising its role from the original game, more arrangements of "Green Greens" appear.
Two tracks from prior titles that incorporate "Green Greens" in some capacity return for specific battles inThe Ultimate Cup Z EX: "The Prince of Mirrors and Regret" fromTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe is used for the first phase of the battle againstPhantom Forgo Dedede, while "Suite: The Star-Conquering Traveler - 4th Movement" fromKirby Star Allies is used for theMorpho Knight battle. Both of these can be played back at the corner stage as tracks 134 and 138.
An arrangement that also contains elements of "TWINKLING STAR SHOWERS" plays after clearing The Ultimate Cup Z EX, as well as on the "Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World Complete!" screen after fully completing all of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition-exclusive content. It is titled"Kirby of the Stars Interview" and arranged by Yuki Shimooka. It can be found at the corner stage as track 143.
After clearingStar-Crossed World, there is a random chance that a jazz arrangement of "Green Greens", titled"Welcome Home, Hero", can play in Kirby's House. This arrangement is by Shogo Sakai, and can be found at the corner stage as track 147.
- "Kirby of the Stars Interview" by Yuki Shimooka; snippets of "TWINKLING STAR SHOWERS" can be heard.
- The jazz-style "Welcome Home, Hero" by Shogo Sakai.
Kirby Air Riders[edit]
InKirby Air Riders, every arranged version of "Green Greens" fromKirby Air Ride reprises its original role, with "City Trial: Rowdy Charge Tank" now named"Energy Tanks Running Amok". Additionally, the theme is featured within the game's new arrangement of "Milky Way Wishes: Staff Credits", based heavily on its arrangement from the originalKirby Air Ride.
Other appearances[edit]
In theKirby's Adventure soundtrack album, the theme received a vocal arrangement namedキラキラマーチ (Sparkling March).
In the Japanese version ofKirby: Right Back at Ya!, the Drag Race arrangement fromKirby Air Ride plays in some of the later episodes; it is namedとっておきの作戦 (Special Strategy) onKirby & The Amazing Mirror Sound Plus. Meanwhile, its orchestral "Green Greens" arrangement plays during a scene inThe Kirby Derby - Part II, asKirby's Starship takes flight, and the final scene ofAir-Ride-in-Style - Part II, where Kirby flies off inside theDestroya and destroys it with theCrash Copy Ability. The arrangement as it appears in the anime also appears on twoKirby CDs:The Very Best of Kirby: 52 Hit Tracks andKirby & The Amazing Mirror Sound Plus. In both instances, it is mistakenly listed as originating fromSuper Smash Bros. Melee.
A live orchestra arrangement of theSuper Smash Bros. Melee arrangement appears in theSmashing...Live! album, as the fourteenth track. It was arranged by Hirokazu Ando and performed by New Japan Philharmonic.
An arrangement featured in the 2006 coin pusher gameKirby: Sparkling Medal Land (「星のカービィ~きらきらメダルランド~」) strongly resembles the simple "Green Greens" arrangement inKirby and the Rainbow Curse that would follow nine years later, although the latter is clearly faster and re-orchestrated.[11] This arrangement may have been originally created for the Japanese version ofKirby: Right Back at Ya!, as the game otherwise heavily borrows artwork and sound elements from the anime.[12]
The theme is also featured at the beginning of the bonus trackステージメドレー/アコースティックver. (Stage Medley / Acoustic Ver.) of theKirby Ultra Super Deluxe Original Sound Track. It sounds very similar to theKirby's Epic Yarn arrangement, though it was released beforehand.
A small portion of "Green Greens" appears inAR Games alongside other Nintendo motifs as a part of the music that plays in the background for the mode that lets the player scan this card.
TheKirby's Return to Dream Land Item Challenge arrangement of the theme is part of the "Kirby Medley" in theTaiko no Tatsujin series.
The theme has been performed live using an orchestra, most prominently in theKirby 25th Anniversary Orchestra Concert, as part of the opening theme "Kirby's 25th Anniversary: Grand Opening". It was later also performed at theKirby 30th Anniversary Music Festival, as the first part of the opening theme "Green Greens ~ Running Through the New World".
Kirby Pupupu Train features two arrangements of this theme, both included on theKirby Pupupu Train Eki-melo Collection. One is an acoustic arrangement withGourmet Race titledグリーングリーンズ~激突!グルメレース/KIRBY PUPUPU TRAIN Ver. (Green Greens ~ Gourmet Race / Kirby Pupupu Train Ver.). The other is a short eki-melo arrangement titledグリーングリーンズ駅 (Green Greens Station).
"Green Greens" has also appeared inThe Sound of Kirby Café 2 as Track 15: "GREEN WARMTH", featuring "Kirby's Triumphant Return" at the end.
On theKirby 30th Anniversary Site, theKirby Air Ride arrangement plays when viewing Kirbys number 01 ("Ohirune Time"), 03 ("Harukaze to Tomomi"), 05 ("Hover"), 08 ("Feed Me"), 14 ("Muteki no Candy"), 22 ("Inhale"), 24 ("Bouken no Hajimari"), 25 ("Panic!"), 26 ("Yakiimo Shooting"), 27 ("Slide Attack"), and 30 ("Discovery").
The version fromSuper Smash Bros. Melee is one of the tracks that can be selected in the European/Australian version ofDonkey Konga 2. Additionally, the version fromKirby's Adventure (along with the "Kirby Dance" jingle) is one of the tracks that can be selected inDonkey Konga 3, under the name「星のカービィ 夢の泉の物語」(the Japanese name ofKirby's Adventure).
"Green Greens" is arranged in five different music genres (jazz, rock, chill, pop and country) as part of a collaboration between theKirby series and Craft Boss Coffee.
"Green Greens" is one of threeKirby songs included as a demo in theKirby Otamatone Melody, an officially-licensed music toy.
"Green Greens" is used as the alarm sound of an officially-licensedKirby clock by RHYTHM.
An arrangement of "Welcome Back, Kirby" fromKirby and the Forgotten Land is featured in an officially licensed collection ofKirby sheet music published byYamaha Corporation.[13]
"Green Greens Buffet" fromKirby's Dream Buffet played in"The Many Dimensions of Kirby" panel at GDC 2023, when presenting the 30th anniversary of theKirby series.
