| “ | It's theboss of all Doomers, the goldenGrand Doomer! As theskies over Nutty Noon began to warp, this fearsome foe swooped in to claim the spheres—and theirdimension-traveling powers! | ” | — VS Grand Doomer Special Page fromKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe |
Grand Doomer is a large spectral flaming ball-shaped creature with wings fromAnother Dimension that debuted inKirby's Return to Dream Land, appearing as the boss ofNutty Noon. He is the boss of allDoomers, and arrived in Kirby's dimension thanks to adimensional rift created by theLor Starcutter's mast. When Kirby and friends approach the Part Sphere containing the mast, Grand Doomer consumes it, and begins to fight them. He attacks in a similar fashion as the Fire Sphere Doomer, though his attacks are much more powerful.
Appearance[edit]

The Grand Doomer resembles a Fire Sphere Doomer, but is naturally much bigger. He possesses many teeth and long fangs, two red eyes, two wings, long spikes on his head, and 13 feathers on his underside. Inside his mouth, the Lor's Mast is visible inside a Part Sphere at all times (though the mast is absent when Grand Doomer is fought inThe Arena orThe True Arena). The Grand Doomer does not change his bodily appearance when knocked to approximately half of his health, but his fiery back-glow changes to a dark gloomy back-glow. He will also begin roaring and will generally attack faster.
When his health is almost depleted, the Grand Doomer will encase himself in a slate-colored ball with glowing stars on him to defend from all regular attacks. In this form, he greatly resemblesDrawcia Soul fromKirby: Canvas Curse.
InExtra Mode, Grand Doomer (now called Grand Doomer EX) is a dark red color, and his eyes are white. Unlike the EX Sphere Doomers, he retains both eyes and does not gain more jagged features than usual.
Boss fight[edit]
Grand Doomer is battled inNutty Noon - Stage 6 and can also be faced inThe Arena andThe True Arena. In the Story Mode, afterKirby makes his way into the area where Grand Doomer is fought, he sees theLor Starcutter's mast floating about in space. He tries to grab the mast, but the Grand Doomer pulls it away. Grand Doomer then manifests around the Part Sphere containing the mast, and initiates battle with Kirby.
The following lists all of Grand Doomer's attacks prior to the third phase in the Story Mode ofKirby's Return to Dream Land. Most attack names are derived from official Japanese strategy guides, while others are conjectural.
| Attacks - Story Mode | |
|---|---|
| Attack | Description |
| グライド体当たり Glide Attack | Grand Doomer dives across the stage, in a maneuver that can be ducked, much like his smaller cousins. He can also do a low dive that cannot be ducked. In the second phase, he can also attempt to ram Kirby from the background. |
| エナジー弾 Energy Bullet | Grand Doomer fires one or two fire spheres at Kirby. In the second phase, Grand Doomer may rapid-fire these in a spiral pattern. In the second phase, Grand Doomer may also fire four elongated fire spheres into the air, which then aim and fire at Kirby. These spheres can be inhaled and spat back. |
| ビックエナジーボム Big Energy Bomb | Grand Doomer spins about, dropping four big fire spheres in various places that explode after a short time. These spheres can be Super Inhaled. |
| ディメンションホール Dimension Hole | Grand Doomer disappears, and four dark rifts appear in the background. The rifts close one-by-one; Grand Doomer flies out of the rift that closes last. |
| ディメンションアッパー Dimension Uppercut | Grand Doomer disappears, and a shifting dark rift appears on the floor. Should Kirby be standing on it, he will be dragged in by dark jaws (actually the Grand Doomer himself), and attacked until the player shakes the Wii Remote (or mashes directions on the Control Stick inDeluxe) to escape. If Kirby is not trapped, Grand Doomer will eventually fly out of the rift. This move is extremely similar toMarx's "Shadow Uppercut" attack inKirby Super Star, hence the similar name. |
| Second phase only | |
| 奥からマシンガン弾 Machine Gun Bullets from the Back | Grand Doomer flies into the background, then barrages the stage with a rapid fire of fire spheres. |
In phase 1, Grand Doomer attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:
- Glide Attack
- Energy Bullet
- Glide Attack
- Big Energy Bomb
- Dimension Hole
- Energy Bullet
- Glide Attack
- Glide Attack [close to ground]
- Energy Bullet
- Dimension Uppercut
In phase 2, Grand Doomer starts with one of these orders before transitioning into and sticking to the other for the rest of the phase:
- Glide Attack [background]
- Energy Bullet [4 at once]
- Glide Attack
- Energy Bullet x2
- Glide Attack [close to ground]
- Energy Bullet [rapid-fire]
- Glide Attack
- Glide Attack
- Machine Gun Bullets from the Back
- Dimension Hole
- Energy Bullet x2
- Glide Attack [close to ground]
- Machine Gun Bullets from the Back
- Dimension Uppercut
- Energy Bullet [4 at once]
- Glide Attack
- Glide Attack [background]
- Energy Bullet [4 at once]
- Glide Attack
- Energy Bullet x2
- Glide Attack [close to ground]
- Energy Bullet [rapid-fire]
- Glide Attack
- Glide Attack
- Machine Gun Bullets from the Back
- Dimension Uppercut
- Energy Bullet [4 at once]
- Glide Attack
- Glide Attack [close to ground]
- Machine Gun Bullets from the Back
- Dimension Hole
- Energy Bullet x2
- Glide Attack
In Extra Mode, Grand Doomer's attacks, while not all that much faster, are more punishing:
| Attacks - Extra Mode | |
|---|---|
| Attack | Description |
| グライド体当たり Glide Attack | Grand Doomer EX dives across the stage, in a maneuver that can be ducked, much like his smaller cousins. He can also do a low dive that cannot be ducked. The dives are faster and cover more ground than in Story Mode. In the second phase, he can also attempt to ram Kirby from the background. |
| エナジー弾 Energy Bullet | Grand Doomer EX fires three fire spheres at Kirby. In the second phase, the Grand Doomer EX may rapid-fire these in a spiral pattern that circles more than once. In the second phase, Grand Doomer EX may also fire eight elongated fire spheres into the air, which then aim and fire at Kirby. These spheres can be inhaled and spat back. The blasts come out faster and are more numerous than in Story Mode. |
| ビックエナジーボム Big Energy Bomb | Grand Doomer EX spins about and, after feinting, drops a big fire sphere in the center of the arena that explodes and shoots sparks after a short time, similar toMarx's "Ice Ball" attack inKirby Super Star. In the second phase, he drops two of these spheres, one at the left of the stage and the other at the right. These spheres can be Super Inhaled. |
| ディメンションホール Dimension Hole | Grand Doomer EX disappears, and four dark rifts appear in the background. Instead of the rifts closing, they all stay open and move around. Grand Doomer EX flies out of a rift that stops moving for a brief period, doing this three times in a row. |
| ディメンションアッパー Dimension Uppercut | Grand Doomer EX disappears, and a shifting dark rift appears on the floor. Should Kirby be standing on it, he will be dragged in by dark jaws (actually Grand Doomer EX himself), and attacked until the player shakes the Wii Remote (or mashes directions on the Control Stick inDeluxe) to escape. If Kirby is not trapped, Grand Doomer EX will eventually fly out of the dark rift. This move covers a much bigger space than in Story Mode. |
| Second phase only | |
| バーニングアタック Burning Attack | Much like a Fire Sphere Doomer, Grand Doomer EX engulfs himself in flames, then fires across the stage. |
| 奥からマシンガン弾 Machine Gun Bullets from the Back | Grand Doomer EX flies into the background, then barrages the stage with a rapid fire of fire spheres. He does this twice in a row. |
| アイスクラッシュ Ice Crush | Much like an Ice Sphere Doomer, Grand Doomer EX starts shimmering ice, then falls and creates a blast. He does this three times in a row, with the final blast happening at the center of the arena. |
Shield phase[edit]

Exclusive to the Story Mode and Extra Mode, Grand Doomer has a third phase which initiates when almost all of his health is depleted. For this phase, he shields himself by turning into a rocky ball with glowing stars on it, and becomes impervious to normal attacks. Only aSuper Ability attack will damage his shield, and the shield takes four hits to destroy. From here, he will cycle through the following moves:
| Attacks - Third Phase | |
|---|---|
| Attack | Description |
| エネミーコーリング Enemy Calling | Grand Doomer teleports around (remaining intangible as he does so) while summoning three different enemies from small rifts that appear in semi-randomized positions. The enemies can be as follows:Blade Knight,Bouncy,Broom Hatter,Kabu,Nruff,Shelt,Shotzo,Super Blade Knight, orWaddle Dee. In Extra Mode,Armor Waddle Dee,Gordo, andScarfy can also appear. Once called, these enemies will wander the stage for a moment and potentially try to attack Kirby, but after a few seconds will leave of their own accord if not defeated. They may dropfood items when defeated. |
| Bound Pound[conjectural title] | Grand Doomer leaps into the background and then starts bouncing around wildly outside of Kirby's reach before making a big leap onto the stage, creating a shockwave where he lands. |
| Deadly Sun[conjectural title] | Grand Doomer EX flies into the background and turns into a giant fireball. He then careens into the stage and flies across it, burning anything he touches. This move isonly performed by Grand Doomer EX. |
| Regenerate[conjectural title] | If Grand Doomer's shield is destroyed, he will hover around and attempt to regenerate the shield, completely restoring it if not interrupted. If Kirby chooses to deliver the final blow with the Ultra Sword, a special cutscene of the move will play. |
After Grand Doomer's shield is destroyed, he's left with a small fragment of health, at which point Kirby can use Ultra Sword to deal a special finishing blow before Grand Doomer can restore a piece of his shield. However, Kirby doesn't actually need the Ultra Sword to defeat Grand Doomer at this stage. If he drops the ability and uses a different one (either from a spare Ability Star or from one of Grand Doomer's attacks), or if another player deals the final hit, Grand Doomer will be defeated normally, skipping the Ultra Sword cinematic.[1]
When fought inThe Arena orThe True Arena, Grand Doomer's third phase is skipped entirely, instead being defeated normally once his health is depleted from the second phase. This was likely done for two reasons:
- So Kirby does not need to drop his ability for Ultra Sword, and so he cannot carry Ultra Sword between fights;
- So that characters other than Kirby can finish the fight, particularly in repeat playthroughs, where player 1 can choose to play as a different character other than Kirby.
- Grand Doomer EX
- Grand Doomer's appearance when he enters the third phase. This represents an undamaged shield.

Trivia[edit]
- Grand Doomer slightly resembles a Quetzal since he has a rigid crest and long tail feathers.
- When Grand Doomer conjures a Waddle Dee during the third phase, the Waddle Dee will stop to wave toward theFourth wall if it gets a chance to land before it starts walking around.
- Grand Doomer is the only boss who does not show up inMerry Magoland to play after his defeat. Instead, theLor Starcutter arrives in his place.
- Left unused in the files of the original Wii version under Name.msbt are two text entries labeledCharaGrandLowperGuard andCharaGrandLowperHeal. The former is namedGrand Doomer (Guard) in English and seems to have been intended to be used during the Super Ability portion of the battle. The latter is namedGrand Doomer (Charge) in English and looks to have been originally intended for the period where Grand Doomer attempts to replenish his guard state during the final blow. Both of these names were translated into all the languages the game supports.[2]
