- This article is about the large gorilla-like boss fromKirby's Return to Dream Land, and should not be confused withGorimondo.
| “ | The snowy mountains areGoriath's home. When thispowerful brawler gets mad, he won't calm down...but you'll have to battle him anyway, because a ship part is hiding in hislair! Goget it! | ” | — VS Goriath Special Page inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe |
Goriath is a yeti-likeboss that appears inKirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake—Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. He appears as the boss ofWhite Wafers and guards theLor Starcutter's Emblem. Most of his attacks are direct melee attacks, such as punches and stomps, though he will also climb the walls and throw objects such as snowballs, or shoot beams from his hand (similar toFighterKirby).
Goriath's name is a portmanteau of the words "gorilla" and "Goliath". Despite this, he really isn't that large, especially compared to Kirby's height of only eight inches.
Characteristics[edit]
Goriath's body is somewhat pear-shaped, his face taking up most of it. This makes his physique similar to aWaddle Dee, though his feet and arms are more defined. His fur covers his body, which is largely white in tone (much like theJapanese snow monkey), though it has red, spiky accents near the hands. His skin is tan, and his face resembles that of an ape, with baboon-like red marks on his cheeks. He also sports a long beard and a similarly long tuft of hair on his head, which is gray in color.
When Goriath is knocked down to half health, he charges up and his beard and hair tuft turn golden. He also begins to glow and his eyes turn red.
InExtra Mode, Goriath's skin is dark gray, his eyes are white, his face marks are of several colors (ranging from blue to lavender), his hair tuft and beard have a blue tint at first, and his wrist hair is brown. These changes cause him to more closely resemble amandrill.
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

InKirby's Return to Dream Land andKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, when Kirby enters the arena Goriath is fought in, the big ape jumps down from the sky. He beats down upon the ground, causing the stage to crumble beneath his mighty blows.
Goriath has a unique feature to his boss fight, in that, as the fight progresses, he will pound the stage with his fists to make it crumble, causing everyone to fall to a lower stage with a different layout. This is done up to four times before the fight is over. In addition, Goriath often climbs on the walls of the battlefield for the various attacks he does and doesn't stick around on the ground for very long.
The following lists all of Goriath's attacks in the Story Mode ofKirby's Return to Dream Land andKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. Most attack names are derived from official Japanese strategy guides, while others are conjectural.
| Attacks - Story Mode | |
|---|---|
| Attack | Description |
| 雪玉&氷塊 Snowballs & Ice | While on a wall, Goriath tosses snowballs at Kirby, which can be swallowed for theIceCopy Ability. In the first phase, he throws two sets of one snowball each every odd-numbered instance, and throws two sets of two snowballs each every even-numbered instance. In the second phase, he throws a set of two snowballs, one set of two spiked ice balls and another spiked ice ball. |
| グルグルパンチ Spinning Punch | On the ground, Goriath charges up a punch, then extends his arm all the way across the stage in an impressive feat of flexibility aimed at Kirby. A star appears where the punch lands. |
| ヒップアタック Hip Attack | While on a wall or on ground level, Goriath may charge up and then jump off the wall to pound the ground, leaving behind stars. In the second phase, this attack is only performed while Goriath clings to the wall. |
| Second phase only | |
| ブリザードはどう Force Blizzard | Goriath forms and fires three energy blasts at different angles. Each one creates a star when it impacts the wall. |
| 連続バウンドロケット Consecutive Bound Rocket | Goriath charges up on a wall, then starts rapidly ricocheting between the two walls. After five collisions, he will then ricochet towards Kirby's current position, creating stars wherever he lands. |
| ツララ落とし Icicle Drop | Goriath pounds the ground, making icicles appear mysteriously from above to fall. These can also be swallowed for theIce ability. |
In phase 1, Goriath attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:
- Snowballs & Ice
- Spinning Punch
- Snowballs & Ice
- Hip Attack [from a wall]
- Spinning Punch
- Hip Attack [on ground level]
In phase 2, Goriath attacks in one of two fixed orders on loop that might be alternated between as follows:
- Force Blizzard
- Hip Attack and Consecutive Bound Rocket in either order
- Spinning Punch
- Icicle Drop
- Snowballs & Ice
- Hip Attack
- Force Blizzard and Spinning Punch

In Extra Mode, Goriath's attacks are generally more punishing, and he sports a new one as well:
| Attacks - Extra Mode | |
|---|---|
| Attack | Description |
| 雪玉&氷塊 Snowballs & Ice | While on a wall, Goriath tosses snowballs at Kirby, which can be swallowed for theIce Copy Ability. These are larger than in Story Mode. In the second phase, he may also throw spiked ice balls with a different trajectory that explode on impact. |
| グルグルパンチ Spinning Punch | On the ground, Goriath charges up a punch, then extends his arm all the way across the stage in an impressive feat of flexibility aimed at Kirby. Immediately afterwards, he punches a second time, with the second punch having less wind-up. Stars appear where the punches land. |
| ヒップアタック Hip Attack | While on a wall or on ground level, Goriath may charge up and then jump off the wall to pound the ground, creating two sets of two spiked ice balls each that fly out on both sides. |
| Second phase only | |
| エネルギー玉 Energy Ball | Goriath rises into the air, then charges a gigantic ball of energy, which passes through the center of the stage. After it goes down, it creates a shock wave that sends any grounded characters flying (except for the very edges) and creates two stars that bounce onto the stage. |
| ブリザードはどう Force Blizzard | Goriath forms and fires seven energy blasts at different angles. Each one creates a star when it impacts the wall. |
| 連続バウンドロケット Consecutive Bound Rocket | Goriath charges up on a wall, then starts rapidly ricocheting between the two walls. After five collisions, he will then ricochet towards Kirby's current position, bounce back to the upper walls and then ricochet to Kirby again after a few more collisions, creating stars every time he lands. |
| ツララ落とし Icicle Drop | Goriath pounds the ground, making icicles appear from above to fall. These can also be swallowed for theIce ability. |
When Goriath is defeated, he reverts to his look before the second phase and gets knocked into the background, where he cartoonishly falls to his doom.
Role in Merry Magoland[edit]

Exclusively inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, after Goriath is defeated in Story Mode, he will appear inMerry Magoland the next time Kirby visits it, hanging off the side of the main castle toward the left, and chatting with some nearbyWaddle Dees. TwoDress-Up Masks based on Goriath's regular and EX forms can be worn, provided the player has defeated him in both Story Mode andExtra Mode, respectively.
Cameo appearances[edit]
| “ | This hat is designed to look like a mighty ape who lives in icy heights. | ” | — Goriath Hat description fromKirby Battle Royale |
InKirby Battle Royale, one of the pieces ofHeadgear for theFighter ability is a hat that is based on Goriath's appearance during the second phase of his boss battle, named theGoriath Hat, and costs 3000 Battle Coins. The same hat returns inKirby Fighters 2, where it is unlocked after reachingFighters Rank 85.
Trivia[edit]

- When Goriath's health drops below the half-way point, his hair turns golden and he begins to glow, and he gains the ability to fire waves of energy from his hands. This could bea nod to theDragon Ball anime series.
- Goriath's EX form additionally gains an attack in the second phase of the battle that has him conjuring a massive ball of energy, which may be a further reference to the series, as it resembles the "Spirit Bomb" technique.
- InKirby and the Forgotten Land, the bossGorimondo reuses many of Goriath's sound effects in battle, in addition to their similar names.
- Unused textures for an early design of Goriath exist in the files ofKirby's Return to Dream Land. His fur in the textures are red, white, and purple rather than just white and orange, his skin has slightly different colors, and his face marks are teal instead.
