— Kirby Fighters 2 loading screen tip

Gordo Ball (calledGold Spike[1] inKirby Air Ride) is an item based onGordo which appears inKirby Air Ride,Kirby Air Riders, and theKirby Fighters games which creates a large stationary spike hazard wherever it is thrown for a short while. In theKirby Fighters games, it resembles a Gordo without spikes initially, but when thrown, it becomes larger and grows its characteristic spikes.

Game appearances[edit]

Gold Spikes on the battlefield inKirby Air Ride

InKirby Air Ride, Kirby can obtain Gold Spikes only inCity Trial, by breakinggreen boxes or inDestruction Derby. Once Kirby obtains this item, he can throw up to three Gold Spikes ahead of him. After being thrown, the Gold Spikes grow to giant sizes and inflict heavy damage to nearby objects, including theAir Ride Machines of opponents and the rider who threw them, though they disappear after a set time. Kirby can drop this item if he collects a different item orCopy Ability, or by getting attacked, and they will not grow if dropped in this way, though they will still damage anyone who touches them.

Interestingly, the instruction booklet description of "Gold Spike" describes it as a "spiky gold ball", whereas it would be more accurate to describe it as a gold-spiky blue ball.

Kirby Fighters series[edit]

InKirby Fighters,Kirby Fighters Deluxe, andKirby Fighters 2, Gordo Balls can appear randomly in standard battles. They are initially harmless and can be picked up by fighters, but when tossed, they expand and grow spikes as soon as they hit the ground, a solid wall, or an enemy fighter. Once the spikes come out, anyone who touches it, including the fighter who threw it, will take 24 damage and be knocked back lightly. In addition, most items that touch the Gordo Ball will be destroyed. After about 20 seconds, the Gordo Ball disappears.

Story Mode: The Destined Rivals[edit]

The mysterious effect of this stage causes nothing butGordo Balls to appear! If you didn't bring anAnti-Gordo Charm, don't let them hit you!
— Pause text for theGordo Ball Stage inKirby Fighters 2

InKirby Fighters 2'sStory Mode: The Destined Rivals, one of the special conditions which can occur in regular stages is referred to as a "Gordo Ball Stage". In this scenario, only Gordo Balls will appear as items during the fight, and they will appear in large numbers. Clearing a Gordo Ball stage nets the player an extra 200 points.

In addition, the Anti-Gordo Charm item allows Kirby and his buddy to resist damage taken from all Gordos, including Gordo Balls, by 75%.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

InKirby Air Riders, Gordo Balls return and serve the same purpose as they do inKirby Air Ride, although they also appear inTop Ride. In this game, Gordo Balls have their spikes extended even when held, with the only difference between their inactive and active states being their size. UnlikeKirby Air Ride, Gordo Balls can only be used once rather than three times. The Top Ride version is much smaller when thrown.
