Gooey

| ||||||||||||||||
| “ | Gooey is Kirby's good friend. While he's made from the same stuff as Dark Matter, he doesn't have an evil spirit. | ” | — Kirby's Dream Land 3 Instruction booklet |
Gooey is one ofKirby's friends who appears primarily inKirby's Dream Land 3, though he was first introduced inKirby's Dream Land 2. He resembles a blue (sometimes purple or black) blob with a face and a long tongue. While he does not have any additional limbs, he can use his tongue to grab onto things, and stretch parts of his "body" to use as makeshift limbs when necessary. Gooey is said to be "made from the same stuff" asDark Matter, but he has a friendly personality and no ill will. His appearance inKirby Star Allies indicates that, though he is capable of speech, he knows little about himself or the world around him.
Like Kirby, he can useCopy Abilities, but uses his tongue to grab enemies rather thaninhaling them. Besides this, he has all of the same abilities as Kirby. In certain circumstances, he can also fly by becomingMock Matter, which gives him orange petals more similar to the rest of his species. He originally appeared as a non-playable character inKirby's Dream Land 2, but he is playable inKirby's Dream Land 3 using a second controller, otherwise appearing as aCPU-controlled companion. Apart from this, he appears inKirby Star Allies as aDream Friend,Kirby Fighters 2 as a Buddy, and inKirby Air Riders as a rider, while making other smaller appearances elsewhere in theKirby series. He has also made a few minor appearances in theSuper Smash Bros. series.
Prior to Gooey's name being officially recognized in the west, he was generically referred to as a blob character,[1] and in the non-Japanese versions ofKirby's Dream Land 2, he has a female counterpart known as theGirl blob.
Characteristics[edit]

| “ | It's Gooey—with the ridiculously long tongue! This weird wobbler has hopped in from Kirby's Dream Land 3. Not even Gooey knows why he's here, but we're all glad to see him show up! | ” | — Pause screen description for Gooey inKirby Star Allies |
Despite being even more simplistic-looking than Kirby, Gooey has a very distinct personality which is portrayed through his expressions and actions. His body is little more than a loose deep-blue blob, which he shifts in a sort of gallop in order to bound around quite quickly, matching Kirby's pace. His eyes are wide and round with small pupils, and continuously spin asynchronously to each-other, suggesting that Gooey is constantly dizzy or disoriented. His mouth is typically a wide closed smile, though he frequently opens up to lasso some food or an enemy with his longWhip-like tongue. Much like Kirby, Gooey is capable of spitting out his foes asStar Bullets, swallowing them togain their powers, andhovering through the air. He can also pair up withAnimal Friends in the same way as Kirby. In addition, Gooey can take flight using his "Mock Matter" form, where he more greatly resemblesDark Matter, and can even fire Dark Lasers inKirby Star Allies andKirby Fighters 2.
Gooey can generally be described as naïve and child-like; even more so than Kirby.Cutscenes inKirby's Dream Land 3 suggest he has an insatiable appetite with little self-control, and is overly curious with his tongue, to the point where he once gets onChuChu's nerves. Gooey can also be generally described as having a somewhat detached attitude from the world around him, as he is not typically phased by things that happen to him, and is not really inclined to understand much of anything about himself or his world, mainly acting on instinct. Despite this, he is generally good-natured, and follows Kirby's lead in savingPopstar.

Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]
Gooey makes his first appearance inKirby's Dream Land 2, where he can emerge from theProtective Bags guarded bymid-bosses if Kirby already has the particularAnimal Friend meant to come out from there. Acting as a collectibleitem instead of a helper, Gooey restores one full unit to Kirby'shealth meter when picked up, and needs to be picked up at least once in order for the game to be considered100% complete. Gooey also appears in the illustrations of theSound Test (only in the international versions), theBonus Chance mode, and theBoss Endurance.
Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]
| “ | When I am called to appear, Kirby's health is slightly reduced. When Kirby inhales me, his health is increased. | ” | — Gooey inKirby's Dream Land 3 Instructional Booklet |

InKirby's Dream Land 3, Gooey can be called inStory Mode by pressing the "A" button in exchange for a full unit of Kirby's health and is playable by a second player or theCPU, possessing four bars of health separate from Kirby's. Gooey can grab enemies with his long tongue, spit them out as aStar Bullet or swallow them to potentially gain a Copy Ability. He can also do thisunderwater, allowing him to attack without using theWater Gun. Gooey can also swallow enemies that Kirby cannot normally inhale, such asScarfies. The only trade-off is that he cannot eat more than one enemy at a time. Gooey can alsohover andslide or use anAir Bullet to attack enemies like Kirby. Kirby can inhale and swallow Gooey anytime to restore a full unit of health, which will also give Kirby anyCopy Ability that Gooey may have had. Doing so removes him from the game until he is called again. Gooey is also eliminated if he runs out of health or if the player who leads him (player 1 if Gooey is controlled by theCPU) repeatedly presses the "A" button, but no health is restored to Kirby by using this method.
A CPU-controlled Gooey simply attacks enemies (even invincible ones at times), but does not swallow them, and mostly follows Kirby. He does not ride any Animal Friends either. Moreover, he cannot give an answer in any of theHeart Star-grantingSub-Games.
In the final battle withDark Matter andZero, Gooey becomes a miniature Dark Matter known as Mock Matter, and can shoot stars in the same way theLove-Love Stick does. However, he does not have the ability to destroy the boss' projectiles that are close to him. He is the only partner that can be used in the final battle.
In the official Japanese guidebook forKirby's Dream Land 3, it is stated that Gooey lives inKirby's house for free.[2]
Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]
InKirby: Planet Robobot, Gooey appears as one of the randomly-appearingstickers in the game, using artwork fromKirby's Dream Land 3.
Kirby Star Allies[edit]

| “ | "My name? Gooey? Maybe?" This googly-eyed wonder from Kirby's Dream Land 3 comes in search of answers to the big questions in life... Who am I? Where? What time is it? | ” | — Guest Star Gooey Who...Me? Pause Screen description inKirby Star Allies |
Gooey appears as aDream Friend inKirby Star Allies, added into the game in version 2.0.0 on March 28th, 2018. He fights with his tongue, which can be used like aWhip and can also provide theSplash effect to his allies' weapons. He can also use a number of other techniques based on his abilities fromKirby's Dream Land 3, including hisBurning move which can provide Sizzle and hisStone form which can be utilized inFriend Abilities likeCurling. Lastly, Gooey is capable of turning into his 'Mock Matter' form and firing dark lasers and is also capable of usingFriend Throw.
Like the other friends, Gooey has his own mode inGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go!, which incorporates some unique stage designs reminiscent of areas fromKirby's Dream Land 3, along with some more original areas that play to his moveset. He can also be selected inThe Ultimate Choice and has a role inHeroes in Another Dimension. Gooey has slightly lowerhealth than Kirby and most other Dream Friends, referencing how summoning him inKirby's Dream Land 3 required removing a bar of Kirby's health.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

InKirby's Dream Buffet, Gooey is available as an unlockablecostume for Kirby, and acolor based on him is also available. The costume consists of Gooey riding atop Kirby's head, and it appears that it is in fact Gooey himself, rather than a prop, since the "hat" moves its tongue around and has the same dizzy eyes. Gooey also appears on aCharacter Treat, depicting his artwork fromKirby's Dream Land 3.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]
InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Gooey is referenced in a few different ways. InMerry Magoland, Kirby can earn twoDress-Up Masks based on Gooey: one with his tongue sticking out, and the other is of him in "Mock Matter" form. The former is unlocked by completingStamp Rally card #03, while the latter is obtained by completing 20Missions (this also unlocks a golden statue of Gooey in the Magoland plaza). Wearing either mask causes the wearer's voice to be replaced by Gooey's, using his distinct "lick" sound effect fromKirby's Dream Land 3.

He can be unlocked by winning onAir after getting swept up in the course's tornado three times, or by achieving at least 2,000 points inSkydive 1. He makes use of his long tongue to grab enemies, items, and spin around. Like other Riders, he is able to useCopy Abilities, and he transforms into his Mock Matter form for hisSpecial, called Mock Dark Matter. Unlike in previous appearances, Gooey's Mock Matter form now has a large eye resembling that of the real Dark Matter on the other side of his body, allowing him to fire shadowy bolts both in front and behind him.[3] In theRoad Trip cinematics andChecklist, Gooey rides theSlick Star. His alternate color scheme gives him a darker hue, adhering more closely to his appearance inKirby's Dream Land 3.

| “ | Can attack enemies by wrapping his them up with his long tongue. Kirby's friend. | ” | — Unofficial translation of Gooey's description fromKirby: Save the Rainbow Islands! |
In theKirby novel series, Gooey appears as a tritagonist inKirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!. He is one ofKirby's friends.
Before the events of the story, Gooey seesPirika flying near the clouds and follows her in hopes of playing together. He sees her planting theDreamstalk by the lake, but when he offers to help, Pirika throws its fruit at him which gets stuck in his throat, making him not able to speak. Sensing that the water of the lake got corrupted by the tree, Gooey realizes that if it pours down in the form of rain, it will affect the residents of theRainbow Islands, so he piles up rocks to block the water. When Pirika tries to break the stones, Gooey fights her.
When Pirika tells Kirby and his friends about their meeting, she lies and claims that she is the one that followed Gooey and makes Gooey seem like the culprit behind the drought, but she doesn't know that Kirby is friends with Gooey. She convinces everyone to help her fight against it. When Kirby realizes that the supposed culprit is Gooey, he dismisses Pirika's story as a misunderstanding. Gooey notices that Pirika tries to push Kirby into the lake, so he attacks her, making him seem like culprit. The others prepare to attack back, but Kirby doesn't want to fight his friend and flees from the battlefield. When Kirby andKine try to jump into the lake, Gooey comes from the water and throws them away, starting another battle. Gooey fightsMeta Knight andKing Dedede. He tossesRick too when he tries to jump in. To stop Gooey, Kirby uses hisinhale, which releases the fruit from his throat, making him able to speak and explain why he attacked.
After learning that Pirika is the culprit, Gooey and Kirby fight the puppeted Meta Knight and Dedede. Gooey wraps his tongue around Kirby and flings him at King Dedede, which take both of the puppets out, but also Kirby. Gooey captures Pirika and stuffs her in thepouch. As they catch a break, Gooey tells his side of the story, and Rick gratefully hugs him. When Pirika escapes from the bag, Gooey chases her in his Mock Matter form, but stops when noticing Kirby in a pinch. Gooey captures her again after Kirby sucks up all the lake water. After the rain returns, King Dedede picks a fight with Gooey, who want to squeeze in the boat too to return to the land, although he can fly. He returns to the land with them to enjoy the rain.

Trivia[edit]
- A tip in theKirby's Dream Land 3 manual claims that calling Gooey would cut Kirby'shealth in half,[4] while in reality, it only removes a unit from his health meter. This appears to be a mistake, as an earlier section of the manual correctly states that Kirby's health is only slightly reduced.
- It is not possible for Kirby's health to drop below half a bar when he calls Gooey, so a trick to save Kirby from the brink is to summon Gooey, then swallow him up to get a bar of health back.
- Despite first appearing inKirby's Dream Land 2, inKirby Star Allies, Gooey representsKirby's Dream Land 3, withRick & Kine & Coo representingKirby's Dream Land 2 instead.
- Some official statements by Nintendo of Europe and Nintendo of Russia state that Gooey representsKirby's Dream Land 2 alongside Rick & Kine & Coo, with Adeleine & Ribbon stated to represent bothKirby's Dream Land 3 andKirby 64: The Crystal Shards due to the presence ofAdo in the former.[5][6] This is not reflected in statements by Nintendo Co., Ltd., and Nintendo of America, and the character trailers andKirby Star Allies itself do not reflect this in any language.
