| “ | READY. -> I WILL GRANT YOU ONE WISH... -> | ” | — Galactic Nova inMilky Way Wishes,Kirby Super Star Ultra |
Galactic Nova (commonly referred to asNova; also calledNova, the Galactic Comet[1]) is a character that first appeared inKirby Super Star. It is an interstellar satellite and anancient relic said to be capable of granting wishes, and it is usually portrayed as amoral. In its first appearance inMilky Way Wishes,Kirby is tricked byMarx into summoning Nova, who steals his wish to instead ask to take over PlanetPopstar, tasking Kirby with destroying it to stop its planetary domination.
Galactic Nova returns inKirby Super Star Ultra'sMeta Knightmare Returns, where it is reassembled and grantsMeta Knight's wish of fighting thegreatest warrior in the galaxy. Nova also appears as the primary antagonist of theRoad Trip mode inKirby Air Riders, where, after receivingZorah's wish to roam around freely, it transforms the inorganic lifeform into a giant machine of destruction namedGigantes.
Appearance[edit]
Nova resembles a giant golden pocket watch, with a watch's bow and crown at the top and a wide variety of other implements and crude modifications attached to it. The "face" of the watch resembles a stylized cat's face, with large indigo eyes and no nose. Nova's back side is flat and features four large cylinders protruding from it.
There are several objects around the circumference of Nova, including (in clockwise order):
- Weathercock
- Telescope
- Wind-up key, more akin to that of a toy than a pocket watch's crown
- Drafting compasses
- Globe (though this is absent from its officialKirby Super Star Ultra artwork)
- Vacuum tubes
- Pendulum
- A smallerpocket watch
- Set square
- Piano keys
- Measuring instrument
- Light bulb
Although these components are never used by Nova itself,Star Dream fromKirby: Planet Robobot does utilize many of them as attacks in itsboss battle when it enters phase 3 (at which point it greatly resembles Nova).
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby Super Star[edit]

Nova first appears inKirby Super Star, playing a major role in theMilky Way Wishes game. During Milky Way Wishes, the Sun and Moon are fighting each other. Kirby is told byMarx that he must find Nova and wish on it to end the conflict.
When Kirby finds the stars on each of the planets, he summons Nova. However, before he can make a wish, Marx appears, knocking Kirby away and wishing to rule Pop Star. Nova flies away to grant his request, while Kirby, who is given theStarship, attempts to stop the giant comet. Kirby flies intoNova's heart and destroys it, halting the entity and preventing it from granting Marx's wish.
After Kirby manages to defeat Marx, Marx is shown flying into Nova, causing it to explode with its various components seen flying away while its wide open eyes disintegrate.
Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]
InKirby Super Star Ultra, Nova is also known as Galactic Nova and retains its role in Milky Way Wishes. It also appears at the end ofMeta Knightmare Ultra. AfterMeta Knight gathers the stars, Nova appears to be reassembled, though it retains visible damage from its earlier appearance. Meta Knight then wishes to fight the greatest warrior in the galaxy. In compliance, Nova summonsGalacta Knight, a warrior so powerful he was sealed away due to his immense power being a threat. After Galacta Knight is defeated, he is seen exploding in the final cutscene as a parallel to Nova's explosion in Milky Way Wishes, using the same music, "Kirby's Triumphant Return". Additionally, at the end ofThe True Arena, it is shown that after Nova exploded in Milky Way Wishes, the remaining power from Nova began to build up and was absorbed by Marx, who was thus able to return asMarx Soul.
Notably, Marx Soul's Englishpause screen description refers to Galactic Nova as "a nova", which may suggest that there are more than one of Nova's kind. The Japanese pause screen description, however, doesn't give this implication.[2]
Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]
Although Galactic Nova does not appear inKirby's Return to Dream Land,Magolor alludes to it in his dialogue after the player has collected all 120Energy Spheres inExtra Mode, with him listing "clockwork stars that soar the cosmos" among the artifacts built by theancients. This dialogue reappears in the game's remake,Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe.
InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Galactic Nova appears as aDress-Up Mask, which is unlocked by completingStamp Rally card #40. When wearing the mask, the wearer's voice is replaced with sounds taken from Galactic Nova andStar Dream.
Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

InKirby 3D Rumble, asub-game fromKirby: Planet Robobot, Nova makes a cameo appearance in the background of Level 3-4, which requires toggling the C-Stick (exclusive toNew Nintendo 3DS models) and waiting for a certain amount of time to see.
AlthoughStar Dream, the game's final boss, is a separate character from Nova, its form when it fuses with theAccess Ark greatly resembles it, sharing the same face and exploding in a similar manner after defeat (with its eyes seen disintegrating while wide open in the same way). Although it lacks the components seen attached to Nova, it summons several of them from portals as attacks during its boss fight.Star Dream Soul OS furthers this resemblance, being gold like Nova is rather than silver, and the final phase of its battle, set inside its body, resembles the battle against theGalactic Nova Nucleus inKirby Super Star andKirby Super Star Ultra.
Super Kirby Clash[edit]
InSuper Kirby Clash, Galactic Nova appears as one of thestickers that can be purchased fromMagolor's Shoppe, based on its artwork fromKirby Super Star Ultra. It comes with the caption:OK. -> and a sound effect from the "First Cry of a Newborn Star" track inKirby: Planet Robobot.
Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]
InKirby's Dream Buffet, Galactic Nova appears on aCharacter Treat, using its artwork fromKirby Super Star Ultra.
Kirby Air Riders[edit]

InKirby Air Riders, Galactic Nova appears various times throughout the game, most notably as the main antagonist of the game'sStory Mode,Road Trip. Galactic Nova sports a much more detailed and ornate design, with its surrounding objects now looking more alien and mechanical in appearance, also missing the stopwatch present in previous appearances. In cutscenes, it appears much greater in size when compared toAir Ride Machines, though much likeStar Dream, its size in gameplay is inconsistent.
Road Trip[edit]
In the cutscenes of Road Trip, it is shown thatZorah's wish to move on its own reached Galactic Nova after being amplified by theFountain of Dreams. After receiving Zorah's wish, Nova started to mass produce the Air Ride Machines and sent them to PlanetPopstar. Afterwards, it sent various drones to Zorah, ripping it into pieces and transforming it intoGigantes. Nova's plan was to cause the Air Ride machines to travel to Gigantes, activate it, and have it destroy all life on Popstar.
While normally depicted as amoral, Nova is depicted as possibly having malicious intent inKirby Air Riders. While it is left ambiguous in English, Nova failed to deliver on Zorah's wish to move, and the Japanese text explicitly states that Nova had a plan in sending the Air Ride Machiens to Popstar.[3]
In the normal ending, after Gigantes is defeated andNoir Dedede fades away, Galactic Nova is shown to be looking at Popstar before flying away.
In the true ending, Galactic Nova appears as the final boss at the end ofJourney's End, which the rider reaches with the help of Noir Dedede. Using the legendary machineLeo, the rider enters Galactic Nova and destroys the rotating pillars inside it. After doing so, they attack Nova's heart head-on, eventually destroying it and causing Galactic Nova to explode before the rider makes a triumphant return to Popstar.
Other appearances[edit]
Air Ride features a course based on Galactic Nova, aptly titledGalactic Nova. The course is partially based on Road Trip's true ending, and involves reaching Galactic Nova, entering it, and destroying its heart. In this course, instead of Popstar, Nova is orbiting an unfamiliar spherical planet that it is seemingly at war with.
Like every new Air Ride course, Galactic Nova has aTop Ride equivalent, simply titledNova. Rather than taking place inside and around Galactic Nova, this course takes place on a colorful road in outer space and features wormholes, though Nova's heart does appear near the end of the course and gives riders a speed boost if they go through it.
Additionally, inCity Trial, Nova can occasionally be seen floating high aboveSkyah, watching the riders from a far distance.[4]
In theKirby novel series[edit]

In theKirby novel series, Nova appears inKirby and the Search for the Dreamy Gears!. In this volume, Nova is never referred to by name, only as the "ancient machine". A long time before the events of the story, the machine had the power to grant wishes. The people ofDiamond Town wanted to eat a lot of chocolate, so the wish came true by turning all the rough diamonds into chocolate. The aristocrats of the town became very rich by selling the chocolate, and the chocolate's sweet scent spread around the town. But one day, a wizard who hated chocolate pulled the gears of the machine and sealed them away to stop the scent. He wrote a warning on it to never activate it again.
The ancient machine is found byHugo in the diamond mines of Diamond Town. On the ancient machine, he finds a silver plate with ancient writing written on it.Magolor deciphers for him the characters on the ancient machine and reveals the warning on it. He reads to him that the machine can turn stones into priceless materials to make tremendous amounts of money, but at the cost of the town residences, since it also emits a terrible stench that will make the town miserable. Hugo, who only cares about profiting, wants to find all the gears of the ancient machine, and put a prize money for anyone who can find them. Later,Meta Knight finds a photo with the ancient warning on it and deciphers it too. Upon learning the warning, he tries to stop Hugo from activating the machine.
After getting the gears, Hugo activates the machine, which turns all the rough diamonds into chocolate again. Distraught, he jumps into the machine, only for the ancient machine to spew chocolate at him. The ancient machine continue to produce chocolate once again, making everybody in the town happy.
Trivia[edit]
- Galactic Nova's official artwork forKirby Super Star Ultra reflects its damaged state in Meta Knightmare Ultra rather than its usual look. This can be seen by how its right eye is open wider than its left, and how the gear near the top of its head is fully exposed.
- InKirby Mass Attack, there is an unused stage splash screen with Galactic Nova from aKirby Super Star Ultra cutscene and the Japanese caption 「画像がありませぬ」 ("No image found").[5] Strangely, Nova uses a pre-rendered 3D model in this screen, even though the game has no other graphics like this.
