| “ | Food restores energy. Whenever you find food, take it. | ” | — The Beginner's Show, inKirby Super Star |
Food refers to items in theKirby series that restore thehealth ofKirby or one of hisfriends. Food has appeared in nearly everyKirby game, as well as theSuper Smash Bros. games. It can be found lying on the ground or inTreasure Chests, drop from defeated enemies inKirby & The Amazing Mirror andKirby's Return to Dream Land onward, or produced by utilizing Copy Abilities such asCook,Magic,Artist or theIce-Spark Power Combo.
With each major iteration of theKirby series, more varieties of food items are made available, though they all serve the same function, to restore varying amounts of Kirby's (or one of his friends') health. Additionally, in severalmultiplayer games sinceKirby Super Star, it is possible to share food items by performing what is officially calledFeed Me, wherein after one character eats a food item, if they quickly touch a friendly character, they will share the food with that character. This is an optimal strategy, as all participants are healed the full amount, as if each one obtained their own food item.
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby's Dream Land[edit]
Only two food items appear inKirby's Dream Land. They are theEnergy Drink, which restores two points of health, and theMaxim Tomato, which restores all health. While theSuperspicy Curry and theMint Leaf are technically food, they do not recover any health, and instead serve a different function. In the storyline, the reason why these food items are so scarce is becauseKing Dedede stole all the food from Dream Land. Kirby's goal is to get it back, along with theSparkling Stars.
Whispy Woods drops apples as part of his attack, but these also do not recover health.
Kirby's Adventure[edit]
Much like inKirby's Dream Land, only the Energy Drink and Maxim Tomato appear as food items. InExtra Game, where Kirby's health is cut in half, Energy Drinks only restore one point of health rather than two.
Kirby's Pinball Land[edit]
InKirby's Pinball Land, food items do not restore health, as there is no health system in this game. Instead, Energy Drinks and Maxim Tomatoes can be seen at various places on thepinball boards, acting as temporary stopgaps to prevent Kirby from falling into the gutter below.
The following are the various food items that can be encountered inKirby's Pinball Land:
- Cake - +M when collected.
- Candy - Worth 3000 points when collected.
- Energy Drink - This item occupies a gutter slot on the board, preventing Kirby from falling through, but disappearing after being used.
- Maxim Tomato - This item occupies the central pit between the flippers, offering a safety net for a short duration before disappearing.
- Mint Leaf - Worth 1000 points when collected.
- Spicy Food - Worth 2000 points when collected.
- Cake
- Candy
- Energy Drink
- Maxim Tomato
- Mint Leaf
- Spicy Food
Kirby's Dream Course[edit]
InKirby's Dream Course, the only food available are Energy Tomatoes, which are smaller variants of Maxim Tomatoes that are used to measure Kirby's health. He starts with 4 on each life, and will lose one each time he makes a shot or collides with a dangerous enemy or hazard. Defeating enemies restores one tomato each, as does entering the cup at the end of a hole.
Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]
The only food items which appear in this title are Energy Drinks and Maxim Tomatoes, like in previous main series games. When found, touchingGooey will also restore health.
Kirby's Block Ball[edit]
Food items do not restore health inKirby's Block Ball. Instead, they are merely worth points when collected.
Kirby Super Star[edit]
Kirby Super Star was the firstKirby game to have a large variety of generic food items. These all heal the same amount of health, which is less than the Maxim Tomato.
Collecting food is given greater importance inGourmet Race, where each piece of food obtained is worth one point.
The following are all the various food items that can be encountered inKirby Super Star. Some food items were changed in the international versions compared to the Japanese version.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]
As in main series games prior toKirby Super Star, there are only two types of food in this game: Energy Drinks and Maxim Tomatoes. Energy Drinks restore two points (one bar) of health, while Maxim Tomatoes restore all of it.
Additionally, Kirby gains one point (half a bar) of health whenever he eats a brownApolo inGrass Land. Kirby also gains a bar of health when he inhales and swallowsGooey. Though this is normally offset by how calling Gooey takes a bar away, it can be useful for bringing Kirby back from the brink (especially if Kirby only has one bar of health, as he can call Gooey without losing any health, and then gain an extra bar by eating Gooey).
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

InKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, there are relatively few varieties of food when compared toKirby Super Star and later games in that style. Standard food items always restore 1 bar ofKirby's health, while Maxim Tomatoes restore all of it. Food can be found at various locations in stages and in theBonus Game, and consist of the following varieties:
- Maxim Tomato
- Cake
- Ice cream bar
- Meat on bone
- Sandwich - This is an onigiri (rice ball) in the Japanese version.
Ice-Spark[edit]

TheIce-Spark Power Combo is capable of producing food as well, though the food produced by this ability is different from the items found in stages, as follows:
- Asparagus
- Cheese wedge
- Flan
- Milk carton
- Hot dog
- Sashimi
- Soda
- Steak
Unlike regular food, this projectile food will disappear after a short amount of time, and can be used to attack enemies.
Other[edit]
Aside from these interactable food items, there are a couple others seen in cutscenes or eaten by other characters:
- Apples - painted byAdeleine and eaten by Kirby in a cutscene.
- Strawberries -Ribbon resembles a strawberry in a cutscene where Kirby is hallucinating from hunger.
- Onigiri - eaten byWaddle Dee in cutscenes and during the Bonus Game.
Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble[edit]
There are four different kinds of food in this game, as follows:
- Energy Drink - Restores 1 HP
- Maxim Tomato - Restores all HP (up to 6 max)
- Hamburger - Found in the time bonus treasure chest prior to a boss fight, gives Kirby 8 HP (replaced by an onigiri in the Japanese version)
- Strawberry Shortcake - Found in the time bonus treasure chest prior to a boss fight, gives Kirby 10 HP
- Energy Drink
- Maxim Tomato
- Hamburger
- Cake
Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]
As withKirby's Adventure, the only food items in this game are Energy Drinks and Maxim Tomatoes.
Kirby Air Ride[edit]

InKirby Air Ride, food can be found in blue boxes or out in the open in theCity Trial game mode. Each distinct food item heals Air Ride Machine durability by a slightly different amount, with ice cream and apples healing relatively little, and Maxim Tomatoes providing a complete refill.
The food items that can be found are as follows:
- Apple
- Curry
- Energy Drink
- Hamburger
- Hot dog
- Ice cream cone
- Maxim Tomato
- Omurice
- Onigiri
- Ramen
- Roast turkey
- Sushi plate
There are a number of differentChecklist objectives revolving around food as well, as follows:
| Objective |
|---|
| City Trial: In one game, drink 3 or moreEnergy Drinks! |
| City Trial: In one game, eat 2 or moreMaxim Tomatoes! |
| City Trial: In one race, eat 3 or more Hot Dogs! |
| City Trial: In one race, eat 3 or more plates of Sushi! |
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]
InKirby & The Amazing Mirror,Energy Drinks andMaxim Tomatoes are carried over fromKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, and two other food items appear: cherries heal one health bar, and meat on a bone heals three, making it more powerful than the Energy Drink. All of these can be found out in the open or in smallTreasure Chests andGoal Games. While otherwise identical to cherries, there are also five generic foods exclusively dropped from defeated enemies - either occasionally by chance or by using theCook orMagic abilities.

Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]
InKirby: Canvas Curse, the only food items that can be found in stages are Energy Drinks (which restore 2 HP) and Maxim Tomatoes (which restore all HP).
Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]

InKirby: Squeak Squad, a slice ofStrawberry Shortcake is the main plot device of the game's Story Mode, whereKirby must chase theSqueaks in an adventure to get back his shortcake slice from them.
All food items fromKirby & The Amazing Mirror make a return in the game, with some of them found inbubbles that can be stored in theCopy Palette. Food stored in the Copy Palette can be mixed to create a food item that restores more health, like mixing two Cherries to create anEnergy Drink. In this case, because Kirby's health is now a continuous bar, food items restore a fraction of his total HP rather than a set amount (cherries restore 1/6th, Energy Drinks restore 1/3rd, hunks of meat restore one half, and Maxim Tomatoes restore all health).
Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]
All food items fromKirby Super Star make a return inKirby Super Star Ultra. In addition, many of these food items make an appearance in theSub-GameSnack Tracks.
Kirby's Epic Yarn /Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn[edit]
Due to health not existing inKirby's Epic Yarn, there are no food items in stages which restore health. However, food does feature in the game in other ways, as follows:
- SeveralFurniture andFabric items resemble food.
- Food appears a couple times in cutscenes, mainly in theTreat Land scene.
- After Kirby consumes theMetamato in the first cutscene, it gives him the ability totransform.
Kirby Mass Attack[edit]
- Main article:Fruit
Food serves a bit of a different function inKirby Mass Attack. Instead of recoveringhealth, the Kirbys have to eat a specific amount of food in order to create another Kirby, up to 10 copies. Filling the fruit meter after this will only give the mob a higher score, so to recover health,Kirby's heroic heart must toss a blue Kirby into aRecovery Ring to bring him back to a healthy pink hue.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

In the opening cinematic, Kirby is seen running with a slice of strawberry shortcake, as King Dedede andBandana Waddle Dee pursue him before theLor crashes and begins the story proper. This particular food item can also be found in-game in various places, along with numerous others.
The following are all the various food items that can be encountered inKirby's Return to Dream Land:

InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, an apple appears at the beginning ofMagolor Soul's second phase inThe True Arena, which is the only time this specific food item is spawned. In addition, Energy Drinks also appear inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe as souvenir items.
Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition[edit]
In addition to the food items present in the games this collection features, food items fromKirby's Return to Dream Land also make an appearance in theFighter Combat Chamber,Smash Combat Chamber andSmash Combat Chamber EXNew Challenge Stages.
Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]
Kirby: Triple Deluxe shares many of its food items withKirby's Return to Dream Land, but also introduces some new ones. Notably, theEnergy Drink also returns after being absent from the previous game.
Additionally, some food items can be stored as anAssist Star after being collected, and can be used at any time to heal Kirby or King Dedede when deemed necessary.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse[edit]

| “ | There are eight varieties in all. Each food item restores one health bar. | ” | — Kirby and the Rainbow Curse electronic manual, page 12 |
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse features 8 distinct food items (not counting the Maxim Tomato) which each restore one point of health. They are as follows (names taken from the electronic manual):
- Cherries
- Hot Dog
- Pizza
- Snap Pea
- Ice Cream
- Blue Punch
- Grapes
- Milk
In addition to recovering health, each food item grants 500 points when collected. Interestingly, besides the white milk, each food item corresponds to a color in the rainbow. These food items are also depicted inElline'sSecret Diary and theKirby's FeastFigurine.
Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]
Kirby: Planet Robobot shares many of its food items with its previous iterations, but also introduces some new ones. Additionally, some food items, like the takoyaki, can only be found off certain enemies.

- Chocolate bar
- Curry
- Flan

Kirby Battle Royale[edit]
Food items do not appear during battles inKirby Battle Royale, but Kirby's entire motive for participating inDedede's Cake Royale is the eponymous cake awarded to the champion. Apples are also collected (but not eaten) in theApple Scramble andCrazy Theater battle modes in addition to the game's Training mode.
Kirby Star Allies[edit]

InKirby Star Allies, food items can be obtained in stages by defeating enemies, by scanningamiibo, fromTreasure Chests,Pop Flowers, and other containers, by scoring high in theGoal Game, and by countering certain boss attacks, includingWhispy Woods' Burst Fruit, King Dedede's Dispose Food, andFrancisca's Deadly Ice Candies, in addition to merely being found out in the open. Many food items from the previousKirby games return inKirby Star Allies, but like the other more recentKirby games, more food items have been added. Some food items are even associated with specific characters, such asDaroach having theStrawberry Shortcake fromKirby: Squeak Squad. The following table lists all the distinct food items inKirby Star Allies:
| Food Items inKirby Star Allies | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Food items can be produced by playable characters using the following methods:
- Artist,Vividria, andAdeleine andRibbon (Still Life and Al Fresco)
- Cook andChef Kawasaki (Cook Potluck and Supper Party, can produce specific foods based on characters and enemies that enter the pot, detailed on theCook page)
Outside of edible food items, food also plays a role in a more decorative sense in some parts of the game. In the opening cutscene for Story Mode, King Dedede is brought eclairs by the Waddle Dees before a piece of the Jamba Heart falls near him, which may tie into the game's code name "Eclair" while it was in development. Additionally,Friendly Field and parts ofInside Islands have giant macarons in the background as part of their environments. Food also appears in several of theCelebration Pictures.
Kirby Fighters 2[edit]
Various pieces of food can appear inKirby Fighters 2 which can be used to recover a small amount of HP. In standard battles, all food aside fromEnergy Drinks andMaxim Tomatoes restore 24 HP when consumed. Food can appear a variety of ways, as follows:
- appearing randomly on stage, or inContainers andIce Containers.
- appearing as a result of theAction Star being activated.
- being dropped by stage events, such as the Waddle Dees inGourmet Go Go.
- being selected inStory Mode: The Destined Rivals as a story item (only the Cherry, Energy Drink, and Maxim Tomato appear in this form).
In Story Mode: The Destined Rivals, picking up Recovery Stones will allow the player's fighter and teammate to gain more HP back when eating food items during battle.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land /Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World[edit]

Kirby and the Forgotten Land and itsNintendo Switch 2 Edition feature food in a similar fashion to previous games, referring to them as "Food Items". Notably, all food items have official names defined for use in dialogue such as receiving a present at Kirby's House. The game's code also divides all food items into different categories of food such as "Dinner" and "Drink". Nearly every one is also a collectiblefigure. Food can also serve a more important purpose to gameplay than simply restoring health, since somemission objectives require finding and collecting certain types of food. Additionally,Vending Mouth shoots out soft drinks that act as projectiles and can be collected as regular food items afterward.
The following table lists all the distinct food items inKirby and the Forgotten Land andKirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World:

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]
- Main article:Strawberry

By virtue of its dessert-themed setting, many types of food can be seen inKirby's Dream Buffet, but not all of it is edible. The main variety of collectible food inKirby's Dream Buffet isstrawberries, which Kirby collects in vast numbers to grow in size and compete against his opponents. Strawberries also contribute to Kirby'sGourmet Rank, with each one being worth at least one Gourmet Point, and potentially more depending on the difficulty of the match or if Kirby was playing online. There are also blueberries, cherries, and raspberries which serve the same purpose, but may give Kirby special rewards when the results are being decided.
Kirby Air Riders[edit]
Like its predecessor, food inKirby Air Riders can be found in the City Trial mode, both in blue boxes and laying on the ground. The amount healed varies from each food item, which is based roughly on its calorie content.[1]
Food also plays a central role in theGourmet RaceStadium, where riders are tasked with eating as much food as possible within a minute. Exclusive to this mode is larger versions of food that award 15 points to the player.

Games which do not have food[edit]
The followingKirby games do not have food items:
- Kirby's Avalanche - While food does not directly appear, the five difficulty levels are named after types of spices: Mild, Medium, Spicy, Hot, and Cajun.
- Kirby's Toy Box - In one mini-game, Maxim Tomato and Energy Drinks serve a different purpose.
- Kirby's Star Stacker (Game Boy) - Food appears in some of the round clear illustrations.
- Kirby's Star Stacker (Super Famicom) - Food appears in some of the round clear illustrations.
- Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe

Trivia[edit]
- FromKirby's Return to Dream Land toKirby: Planet Robobot, the Lemon Juice food item features an orange-colored juice and a green-colored citrus slice, making it resemble orange juice with a slice of lime rather than lemon juice. The texture file inKirby's Return to Dream Land in the LemonJuice.brres.cmp file in fact refers to the juice as orange juice. As ofKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, both the juice and the citrus slice are now colored yellow to look like lemon juice.
- In manyBoss Endurance modes, starting withThe Arena inKirby Super Star Ultra, the lobby features Maxim Tomatoes that get replaced with regular tomatoes after they are taken. The True Arena, and modes similar to it, feature only regular tomatoes. In reference to this, theColosseum is the only place inKirby and the Forgotten Land and itsNintendo Switch 2 Edition where regular tomatoes appear; they do not appear as a standard food item.
