Ahoy!Fatty Puffer, a glutton of the sea, has surfaced! As he inhales, he'llpuff up to a massive size. Oh, and it looks like he'sswallowed a ship part! Maybe that's how he got sostrong...
— VS Fatty Puffer Special Page inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Fatty Puffer is a boss that debuted inKirby's Return to Dream Land. As his name implies, he is a fat pufferfish. He bears a royalty-inspired design, and his attacks are characterized by using his girth to perform body slams and rolling attacks. He's the boss ofOnion Ocean and guards theLor Starcutter's Left Wing.

Appearance[edit]

Fatty Puffer, puffed up and angry inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Fatty Puffer's headdress consists of coral, which he uses to hide and ambush Kirby when he enters the room, much in the same way that theEmperor Bulblax from thePikmin games would. His body is largely a blob that features purple scaly skin with a white belly, topped by a fishy face. His fins are very small, and do not factor into the battle at all.

At first, he's not that large, but once his health is halfway depleted, he puffs up to an impressive size, likeWhispy Woods andMr. Dooter do.

In theExtra Mode, Fatty Puffer has a red and gold color scheme. His headdress is also much fancier, resembling a crown.

Attacks[edit]

Fatty Puffer in Extra Mode. Notice the fancier headdress.

The following lists all of Fatty Puffer's attacks in the Story Mode ofKirby's Return to Dream Land. Most attack names come from pages 122 and 245 of the official Japanese strategy guide and page 172 of the Perfect Support Guide for the original Wii version unless otherwise stated.

Attacks - Story Mode
AttackDescription
ローリングタックル
Rolling Tackle
Fatty puffs up and forms a ball, then rolls forward. When he crashes into the wall, stars appear. In the second phase, he may do this attack twice in a row.
ジャンププレス
Stomp Jump
Fatty charges up, then performs a massive leap, hovers in the air for a moment, then pounds the ground, creating stars.
Fish Spit[conjectural title]
Fatty spits out two sets of Fatty Puffer Jrs. that flop about on the floor. In the second phase, he spits out two sets of two enemies at once and may also spit outBlippers. Both the Fatty Puffer Jrs. and Blippers will eventually hop off-screen if left alone for long enough.
ウォーター弾
Water Bullet
Fatty spits out globs of water, which can be swallowed for theWater Copy Ability. In the second phase, he spits out two at once.
Second phase only
ウォーターキャノン
Water Cannon
Fatty charges up, then shoots out a huge continuous stream of water, covering the ground.
鍾乳石落とし
Stalactite Dropping
Fatty stomps the ground repeatedly, causing stalactites to appear, then fall. These can be inhaled and spat back at him.
バルーンアタック
Balloon Attack
Fatty puffs up, then starts bouncing back and forth across the room.

In phase 1, Fatty Puffer starts with these attacks:

  • Rolling Tackle
  • Stomp Jump
  • Fish Spit
  • Stomp Jump
  • Water Bullet x2

He then attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:

  1. Rolling Tackle
  2. Stomp Jump
  3. Fish Spit
  4. Stomp Jump
  5. Water Bullet x3

In phase 2, Fatty Puffer attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:

  1. Rolling Tackle
  2. Stalactite Dropping and Water Cannon [in either order]
  3. Balloon Attack
  4. Rolling Tackle x2
  5. Water Cannon
  6. Fish Spit [two sets of two enemies]
  7. Stomp Jump
  8. Water Bullet [two sets of two water drops]
  9. Stomp Jump [occasionally]
It'sFatty Puffer EX! His rolling tackle can take him up walls to theceiling, and his water cannon sprays at all sorts ofangles. What gives? Usually he just naps and eats, which sounds familiar...
— VS Fatty Puffer EX Special Page inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

In Extra Mode, Fatty Puffer's attacks are much more vicious and quick:

Attacks - Extra Mode
AttackDescription
ローリングタックル
Rolling Tackle
Fatty puffs up and forms a ball, then rolls forward. When hitting the wall, he then rolls up it, across the ceiling, and all the way back around before finally crashing into the wall to release stars. In the second phase, he may turn once reaching the first wall, and roll the other way to hit the other wall. He may also turn many times.
ジャンププレス
Stomp Jump
Fatty charges up, then performs a massive leap, hovers in the air for a moment, then pounds the ground, creating stars. The leap goes further than in Story Mode and slightly homes in on players' positioning.
Fish Spit EX[conjectural title]
Fatty spits out various Fatty Puffer Jr.s EX andBlippers that flop about the stage. In the second phase, he will jump onto the ceiling before using this move.
ウォーター弾
Water Bullet
Fatty spits out globs of water, which can be swallowed for theWater Copy Ability. In the second phase, he will jump onto the ceiling before using this move.
Second phase only
広角ウォーターキャノン
Wide-Angle Water Cannon
Fatty charges up, then shoots out a huge continuous stream of water, covering the ground. He will then angle it to try and hit the ceiling as well.
鍾乳石落とし
Stalactite Dropping
Fatty stomps the ground repeatedly, causing stalactites to appear, then fall. These can be inhaled and spat back at Fatty. Stalactites fall faster and are greater in number than in Story Mode. He may also combine this move with a "Rolling Tackle" attack to devastating effect.
バルーンアタック
Balloon Attack
Fatty puffs up, then starts bouncing back and forth across the room. Much faster than in Story Mode.

Once hishealth is depleted, Fatty Puffer's eyes white out. Then, he slumps over and explodes, releasing the Lor's Left Wing in the process.
