Dream Friend
| “ | Former allies and rivals return as friends. Embark on the adventure of your dreams with characters from the Kirby series! | ” | — in-game tip fromKirby Star Allies |
Dream Friends are special playable characters whichKirby can recruit inKirby Star Allies. They are distinct from the regularfriends in that they do not represent any particularCopy Ability, instead having unique movesets. Each Dream Friend (with the exception ofBandana Waddle Dee) represents a main-seriesKirby game released at the time ofKirby Star Allies.
Overview[edit]
To obtain Dream Friends, the player must unlock them viaStory Mode and/or game updates, then use aDream Rod within to call them forth, found inDream Palaces and in various locations ofGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go! andHeroes in Another Dimension. They can then remain with the team indefinitely, only disappearing if they are un-friended or defeated.
Dream Friends are also playable in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! where they can be chosen as the primary character, andThe Ultimate Choice where they can be chosen as any player. In both of these modes, they must be unlocked by completing the mode once. They also appear for player 1 to use to solve puzzles and collectFriend Hearts after going through certainHero Doors in Heroes in Another Dimension.
List of Dream Friends[edit]
Kirby can recruit one Dream Friend each time he visits the Dream Palace. He can also recruit multiples of the same friend.
From Story Mode[edit]
These Dream Friends are available in the game at launch, but two of them need to be unlocked by defeating them asbosses first:
- Bandana Waddle Dee (described as making a "special appearance"; represents Waddle Dees in general)
- King Dedede (Kirby's Dream Land)
- Meta Knight (Kirby's Adventure)
(This trio are notably also playable characters inKirby's Return to Dream Land.)
Bandana Waddle Dee is unlocked once the firstDream Palace is unlocked, while King Dedede and Meta Knight are available once they are beaten inClash at Castle Dedede andSacred Square, respectively.

These Dream Friends have been available since March 27th, 2018, when the game was updated to Version 2.0.0:

Fanfare[edit]
Starting with version 2.0.0, each Dream Friend plays their own fanfare when they are summoned by the Dream Rod, or when they are selected on the title screen ofGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go!, as well as when reaching checkpoints in that mode. The fanfares are based on their main theme song if applicable, or otherwise an appropriate theme from their origin game.
Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go![edit]
InGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go!, Dream Rods can be found by pressing specificBig Switches.
When playing as any of the downloadable Dream Friends, several levels feature entirely new rooms not seen in the Story Mode or in the runs with other characters. Additionally, several areas resemble stages from the games in which these Dream Friends originate.

Trivia[edit]
- According toShinya Kumazaki, the development team was originally concerned that past storylines would make some Dream Friends difficult to include, but they decided that magically summoning them with the Dream Rod would allow them to bypass this limitation and include any characters they wanted.[2]
- Characters initially considered as Dream Friends that didn't make the final cut includedShadow Kirby,Drawcia,Galacta Knight,Prince Fluff, andElline. They were decided against once the team established the basic rule of only including one Dream Friend from each main-seriesKirby game.[3]
- Aside fromDream Palaces, it is also very briefly possible to recruitKing Dedede andMeta Knight directly after they are defeated asbosses if aFriend Heart is tossed at them in Story Mode andGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go!.
- Among all playable characters inKirby Star Allies,King Dedede andThe Three Mage-Sisters have the second-highest health,Adeleine & Ribbon have the lowest health,Gooey has the third-lowest health,Taranza has the fourth-highest health, and the remaining Dream Friends have the third-highest health.
- In The Ultimate Choice, King Dedede and The Three Mage-Sisters have the highesthealth,Adeleine & Ribbon has the lowest health,Gooey has lower health than Kirby, and the remaining Dream Friends' health is tied with Kirby.
- The game updates also addedStone ability transformations,Celebration Pictures, and hidden stone plates (seeKirby Star Allies/Update History) of the Dream Friends.

- ↑"Kumazaki and his team looked at heroes and villains from earlier Kirby adventures that they could add to the four-character teams that Star Allies players use to run and fight through the game's levels. Initially, they worried whether it was narratively consistent to add certain characters but abandoned those concerns by deciding Kirby would just summon them magically using a Dream Rod.
'There were more than a few times when we thought it would be difficult to include certain characters when taking the past stories into consideration,' Kumazaki said, 'but we got past that kind of rigid thinking early on. Focusing on the story would immediately close the door to going on adventures with these characters.'" –Stephen Totilo (Kotaku) - ↑"HAL had to leave some beloved characters out. Prince Fluff from Kirby's Epic Yarn didn't make it in, for example, and there were more. 'There were other characters that we wanted to make special guest appearances, like Drawcia, Elline, Shadow Kirby, Galacta Knight, and so on. But we established a certain rule for our selection process. The rule was to select one character from each title in the main action games over the years, the so-called core Kirby games, the equivalent to numbered sequels.'" –Stephen Totilo (Kotaku)
