This article is about the dark version ofMeta Knight, and should not be confused withParallel Meta Knight, fromKirby Star Allies.
He's back...with a vengeance. The darkestshadow of the strongest warrior. Sealed in thelabyrinth of the mirror foraeons, this dark knight has returned with one thing on his mind...Revenge!
— VS Dark Meta Knight's Revenge Pause Screen description inKirby: Triple Deluxe

Dark Meta Knight is a sinister duplicate ofMeta Knight who serves as the secondary antagonist ofKirby & The Amazing Mirror, and the FinalBoss ofDededetour! inKirby: Triple Deluxe. He is Meta Knight'sMirror World counterpart and dark shadow. His latest physical appearance is that of a playableDream Friend inKirby Star Allies, where he has many of Meta Knight's abilities, along with some mirror-based powers. Dark Meta Knight initially took on the appearance and coloration of his more familiar counterpart,Meta Knight, but was later uncovered during the events of his debut game,Kirby & The Amazing Mirror.

Little is known about Dark Meta Knight's motives, aside from the idea that he is generally evil. He carries a silver version ofGalaxia and appears to be Meta Knight's equal at the very least, due to being able to defeat him in a straight up sword duel. In place of superb aerial mobility, Dark Meta Knight instead relies on powers related to mirrors, able to make duplicate copies of himself, attack with shards of glass, and reflect enemy projectiles in a similar manner to theMirror ability. Over time, he has become more visually distinct from Meta Knight in-game, gaining tattered wings and a deep cut through his mask.

Physical appearance[edit]

K&TAM Dark Meta Knight artwork.png
Artwork of Dark Meta Knight fromKirby & The Amazing Mirror

When he debuted inKirby & The Amazing Mirror, Dark Meta Knight looked exactly likeMeta Knight in-game, just with a different color scheme. He has a dark gray body with red feet, pale silver armor, and a silver sword. However, his official art shows a more distinct design. Dark Meta Knight is distinguished by a slash mark on his mask over his left eye, which was left by Meta Knight during their duel at the beginning ofKirby & The Amazing Mirror.[1] His mask has a thinner visor, he has a torn cape, and he wields a silver version ofGalaxia with a blue gem.

Starting inKirby: Triple Deluxe, Dark Meta Knight's in-game appearance correctly matches his official art fromKirby & The Amazing Mirror. His Galaxia still has six prongs, whereas Meta Knight's has been consistently shown with four sinceKirby's Return to Dream Land. Additionally, his pauldrons are now dark gray instead of silver. In this game andKirby Battle Royale, Dark Meta Knight's mask begins to become literally "edgier," with more exaggerated angles in his visor and larger protrusions on the side of the mask in comparison to Meta Knight's. In addition, these two games cemented the taller height of his visor.

InKirby Star Allies, Dark Meta Knight's 3D model is enhanced, reflecting Meta Knight's redesign fromKirby: Planet Robobot onward. His mask and armor have additional scratches on them, his eyes are pale orange rather than yellow, and his wings are tattered at the edges. He now wears a pair of red shoes, and his feet are shown to be black. His sword still matches the older design of Galaxia, with six prongs and a flat blade, whereas Meta Knight's Galaxia is redesigned in this game to feature a thicker blade. Lastly, he has his personal icon on his right pauldron (Meta Knight's icon is on his left).

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]

Intro[edit]

In the intro cutscene when idle on the title screen,Kirby is strolling around in a field when he bumps into Dark Meta Knight, who is shrouded in shadow. In the blink of an eye, Dark Meta Knight slashes Kirby with his dark version of Galaxia. Somehow, the slice cuts Kirby into four clones. With the Kirbys still stunned, Dark Meta Knight flies off and enters the mirror world. They at first are confused, but they recover quickly and fly after him, sharing a singleWarp Star.

At the actual beginning of the game (when the player can really control Kirby), Dark Meta Knight is seen standing in front of the four Kirbys, but he quickly runs off. When the Kirbys follow him for a little bit, a cutscene is shown where Dark Meta Knight encounters his good counterpart in the hub of the mirror world. They have a brief duel, and Dark Meta Knight wins. Victorious, Dark Meta Knight knocks Meta Knight into theDimension Mirror and slices its glass into 8Mirror Shards. After this, he enters the mirrorway toRainbow Route and leaves.

First Battle: ? ? ?[edit]

Dark Meta Knight is located at the end ofRadish Ruins. Here, he is only known as? ? ? and is disguised as Meta Knight. In this battle, he fights largely like Meta Knight fromKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, using the following moves:

Dark Meta Knight's attacks as "? ? ?"
NameDescriptionNotes
Hover FlapDark Meta Knight uses his wings to fly higher into the air. This distinguishes his fight from Meta Knight's inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, since there, Meta Knight does not use his wings.
GuardDark Meta Knight raises his defense to block incoming attacks by holding his sword out.He may also leap backward away from Kirby. If he hits the edge of the screen, he'll bounce forward off of it, and leave a Dropped Star behind.
Overhead SlashDark Meta Knight throws out a fast sword slash while on the ground, usually after pacing in sync with Kirby's own movement. This attack leaves a Dropped Star in front of Dark Meta Knight.
Triple SlashDark Meta Knight throws out three fast sword slashes in a row, with a slight delay between the second and third. After the second slash finishes, a Dropped Star is spawned in front of Dark Meta Knight.
Quick SlashDark Meta Knight performs an incredibly quick slash on the ground, usually after pacing in sync with Kirby's own movement.
Sword SpinDark Meta Knight spins with his sword out while jumping through the air in parabolic fashion. He may also use it after a Hover Flap to get Kirby if he's high up.
Down ThrustDark Meta Knight leaps into the air and then falls straight down with his sword facing downward. This attack leaves Dropped Stars around the point of impact with the ground.
Up ThrustDark Meta Knight thrusts his sword directly above him.He may precede this by walking slower. He may also use it in midair after a jump.
Attack names may be conjectural, based on similar moves with known names.

Notably, Dark Meta Knightdoes not offer asword to Kirby before the fight begins, which helps to tip off that he is not who he appears to be. Due to this, it is possible for Kirby to fight Dark Meta Knight here with any ability he chooses, or indeed none. This also means that, unlike Meta Knight's battle inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Dark Meta Knight will leaveDropped Stars after some of his attacks so Kirby can fight back if he has no ability. Dark Meta Knight as ??? has 60 HP, which takes 6Star Bullets (10 damage per shot) to defeat should Kirby use no ability at all.

When Dark Meta Knight is defeated, he regains his dark shade. His mask also falls off, showing a similar cute and Kirby-like face that Meta Knight has. He then runs off after concealing himself in his cloak, leaving his old sword behind and a piece of the Dimension Mirror.

Second Battle: Dark Meta Knight[edit]

Kirby and his clones face off against Dark Meta Knight inKirby & The Amazing Mirror

When Kirby restores all theMirror Shards and enters the Dimension Mirror, he sees Dark Meta Knight again, disguised as Meta Knight still. However, when the real Meta Knight appears and points towards him, he is revealed in his true form,Dark Meta Knight.

In this rematch, Dark Meta Knight actually has only 48 HP, sharply decreased from his first battle. However, he attacks more aggressively, has a lot of higher defense against most attacks (most notably the Sword ability only does 2 HP of damage) and has two new, more powerful attacks that are very hard to dodge:

  • Crescent Shot - Dark Meta Knight can fire purple energy waves from his sword. There are two variants to this attack: one of them has him fire an incredibly fast single shot, and the other has him fire three slower consecutive shots. If Kirby is above ground level, Dark Meta Knight might jump up to fire the single shot, or will aim the three consecutive shots at his current position. (The Crescent Shot fromMaster actually shares the same sprite but orange-colored instead.Meta Knight would reuse this sprite in red as his Fire Crescent Shot inKirby: Squeak Squad.)
  • Tornado Slash - Dark Meta Knight can also use this signature move of Meta Knight sinceKirby Super Star. He requires charging to use this attack. After releasing his charge, he stabs his sword into the ground to summon a giant tornado that throws Kirby into the air in contact. It will either travel half the screen or cover the entire arena, but if Dark Meta Knight's health is lower, it is more likely to do the latter. Kirby should try and get behind Dark Meta Knight while he's charging up to preemptively avoid the attack.

Upon defeat, Dark Meta Knight shatters like glass, presumably destroyed. Kirby is then sucked into a warp hole to battle the real mastermind of this game,Dark Mind.

Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

InKirby Super Star Ultra, Dark Meta Knight appears as a collectible card in thesub-gameKirby Card Swipe.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

Dark Meta Knight's Revenge, just after emerging from the Dimension Mirror inKirby: Triple Deluxe

Dark Meta Knight (now namedDark Meta Knight's Revenge) reappears as a surprise boss inKirby: Triple Deluxe.

InDededetour!,King Dedede encounters Dark Meta Knight, who is freed from his mirror prison and confronts Dedede as the final boss of this mode. Thespecial page mentions that he was sealed in "the labyrinth of the mirror" for aeons, which is a reference to the Japanese title ofKirby & The Amazing Mirror,ほしのカービィかがみ大迷宮だいめいきゅう (Kirby of the Stars: The Great Labyrinth of Mirrors). This is more obvious in the Japanese version, as it uses the phraseカガミの中の めいきゅう ("the labyrinth within the mirror").

In addition to his previous moves fromKirby & The Amazing Mirror, Dark Meta Knight's Revenge inherits some attacks fromGalacta Knight, and also uses new attacks that involve creating false clones and attacking with shards of glass. Upon defeat, Dark Meta Knight is sealed back into the mirror, and King Dedede finishes him off by smashing the mirror with his hammer.

InThe True Arena, Dark Meta Knight's Revenge is also fought byKirby as the third boss of the Nightmare Four (the others areQueen Sectonia DX,Shadow Dedede andSoul of Sectonia). When he is defeated by Kirby, he shatters like glass and vanishes.

The first phase of Dark Meta Knight's Revenge plays the theme "Revenge of the Enemy", and the second phase plays a fast rock-and-roll remix of his own theme fromKirby & The Amazing Mirror, now rearranged and titled "Shadow Strike".

The following lists all of Dark Meta Knight's attacks inKirby: Triple Deluxe. Unlike other bosses, Dark Meta Knight attacks in a random order every time he's fought; the only fixed move is that he always starts the second phase with "Mirror's Division".

Attacks of Dark Meta Knight's Revenge inKirby: Triple Deluxe
AttackDescription
3連ぎり
Triple Slash
Dark Meta Knight slashes three times in a row, similar to Meta Knight's version sinceKirby's Return to Dream Land.
In the second phase, this attack can be followed by 'Hyper Rush'.
ハイパーラッシュ〜ムーンショット
Hyper Rush - Crescent Shot
Dark Meta Knight performs multiple slashes and finishes by firing a crescent-shaped energy wave from his sword.
Crescent ShotDark Meta Knight charges his sword to fire Crescent Shots with slight homing properties. In phase 1, he can fire either one fast Crescent Shot or three slow-moving ones. In phase 2, he can fire two sets of three slow-moving ones.
Spin SlashDark Meta Knight requires charging to use this attack.

After releasing his charge, he performs a horizontal spin slash, leaving stars around him.

  • This is similar toSword Kirby and Meta Knight's 'Spin Slash'.
  • In addition, Dark Meta Knight may jump during 'Spin Slash', similar to Sword Kirby's 'Twister Slash' introduced inTriple Deluxe.
Piercing SlashDark Meta Knight dashes while thrusting his sword.
  • This is similar to Sword Kirby and Meta Knight's same attack.
Glide SwordDark Meta Knight glides while thrusting his sword from the background and into the foreground twice.
Up ThrustDark Meta Knight may stab upward if Kirby/King Dedede is over his head.
Down ThrustDark Meta Knight may thrust down his sword when in midair, leaving two stars on impact.
ファイナルビームソード
Final Beam Sword
Dark Meta Knight jumps with a vertical spinning slash. When he lands, his sword sends out a shockwave that travels across the ground.
The shockwave leaves a star when hitting the wall.
スピニングナイト
Knight Spin
Dark Meta Knight jumps into the air and attacks with a vertical spinning slash at the apex of his jump. He may sometimes continuously spin until touching the ground, leaving two stars as he does.
トルネイドアタック
Tornado Attack
Dark Meta Knight jumps and spins himself as a tornado, which cannot beguarded.
If Kirby/King Dedede is hit by the tornado, they will be thrown into the air and take damage when crashing onto the ground.
Dark Meta Knight leaves two stars when landing.
  • Unlike Meta Knight or Galacta Knight's version, Dark Meta Knight will move between the planes of the stage.
竜巻
Tornado
Dark Meta Knight requires charging to use this attack.

After releasing his charge, he stabs his sword into the ground to summon a giantunguardable tornado that travels across the stage. If Kirby/King Dedede is hit by the tornado, they will be thrown into the air and take damage when crashing onto the ground. In the second phase, the attack is impossible to dodge unless Kirby/King Dedede get behind Dark Meta Knight while he's charging up the attack.

ミラーズエッジ
Blade Burst
Dark Meta Knight summons multiple giant mirror swords that erupt from the ground. He may summon two giant swords from the ground near one of the corners as a form of cover before proceeding to unleash Crescent Shots. In the second phase, he may perform this 3 times in a row. He may additionally summon three giant swords from the ground near one of the corners as a form of cover before using Crescent Shot. Unlike in the first phase, the second and third swords are delayed a little bit.
  • "Blade Burst" is the name this attack is given inKirby Star Allies. The Japanese name is "Mirror's Edge".
  • This attack is somewhat similar toGalacta Knight's "Rising Spine".
Second phase only
ミラーズディビジョン
Mirror's Division
Dark Meta Knight only performs this attack in his second phase and always begins with this attack at the beginning of said phase.

He divides himself into three, two of which are false clones. Every Dark Meta Knight hides into a mirror respectively.
The mirrors move around rapidly to shuffle the real Dark Meta Knight and his false clones. Then, all Dark Meta Knights come out and cut down forcefully, leaving stars on impact.

  • If any false clone is hit when coming out, it will break into glass shards that home in on Kirby or King Dedede.
  • If the real Dark Meta Knight is hit when coming out, he will receive double damage due to his decreased defense at this moment.

Then, he merges with any remaining clones, divides himself again, shuffles around, and repeats the above attack pattern one more time.
Finally, he divides himself once more, and all Dark Meta Knights perform 'Glide Sword' across the planes twice. If hit, Kirby or King Dedede will be juggled to all Dark Meta Knights that haven't performed the attack yet. After that, they merge back into the real Dark Meta Knight.

3D竜巻
3D Tornado
Dark Meta Knight flies to the background before charging up and then releasing three waves of unguardable tornadoes in succession that fly in to the foreground from either the left or right sides of the stage.
Japanese attack names are taken from official strategy guides; English attack names are conjectural, mostly taken from Meta Knight and Galacta Knight's equivalents.

Dark Meta Knight also appears among the audience in theKirby Master movie. Interestingly enough, although Dark Meta Knight appears inKirby: Triple Deluxe, the originalMeta Knight is nowhere to be seen, except in a balloon made by theCircus ability and a small cameo in the Kirby Master movie.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Dark Meta Knight when summoned as a Dream Friend
"..."
Is that the uninvited knight from Kirby & The Amazing Mirror?! Guess he had a fight with Meta Knight. The Mirror World must cast a long shadow across the galaxy... At least he's here as a friend!

— Guest Star Dark Meta Knight From the Shadows Pause Screen description inKirby Star Allies

Dark Meta Knight makes his first playable appearance inKirby Star Allies as aDream Friend, added to the game with version 3.0.0 on July 27th, 2018. His version ofGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go! features several areas based on those ofKirby & The Amazing Mirror.

Dark Meta Knight's Dream Friend moveset combines theSword andMirror abilities. His sword can also be grantedelemental powers. If Dark Meta Knight is the only human player, when he loses a life, instead of flipping off-stage like every other character, Dark Meta Knight shatters like glass, a reference to how he has been destroyed in previous titles.

Dark Meta Knight's Japanese Guest Star description is somewhat different. It mentions that he was "drawn out by the galaxy's distant darkness", referring to a similar line in Meta Knight's description ("Sensing the distant darkness, that mysterious knight flies!").

That uninvited knight from "The Amazing Mirror" is reborn! Huh? Did he get into a fight with Meta Knight? Well, once he becomes your Friend, it'll be okay. Drawn out by the galaxy's distant darkness, the Mirror World's shadow flies!

As shown in his,Adeleine &Ribbon's, andDaroach'sGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go! ending pictures, Dark Meta Knight seems to be sloppy when it comes to art.

Moveset[edit]

This shadowy figure makes a bold return from the land of The Amazing Mirror! Perhaps he was drawn by the dark hearts, but while his motivations may be shady, he'll sure make a mighty ally. The power of the shadow can pierce through any light!

Trivia[edit]

The beginning of the first phase against Dark Meta Knight inKirby: Triple Deluxe, with what appears to be blood spurting out of his body.
  • At the beginning of both phases in hisKirby: Triple Deluxe battle, Dark Meta Knight appears to spurt out blood from his body.
  • In Version 3.0.0 ofKirby Star Allies, Dark Meta Knight could never have anelement in theskits even though the coding allowed him to. This has been fixed in Version 4.0.0.
  • Dark Meta Knight's mask breaks and reveals his face inKirby & The Amazing Mirror, though because he is merely a color swap ofMeta Knight, little can be determined from this. While his mask doesn't break inKirby: Triple Deluxe andKirby Star Allies, removing the mask from hisStar Allies 3D model shows his face is no different to that of Meta Knight, including the same yellow eyes. However, there is no scar on Dark Meta Knight's left eye, meaning only his mask got hit.[3]
  • The mark on Dark Meta Knight's mask strongly resembles Meta Knight's mask inSamurai Kirby, even being on the same side.
