"Crossing into the Parallel with You" is thestaff credits theme ofKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe'sMagolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler, found in theJukebox as track 186. It was composed byHirokazu Ando.[1]

Composition[edit]

The ending of Magolor's story.

"Crossing into the Parallel with You" follows the trend established by main game credits: it's an orchestrated piece that consists of various sections of differing character while showcasing the game's primary motifs. In this case, these motifs are "Judgment of the Malus Pumila", "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler" and "C-R-O-W-N-E-D", "Road to Victory", and the two primary motifs of theTeam Kirby Clash series ("Ordeal" and "Town"). Throwbacks to theStory Mode themes can also be found: from "Four Adventurers: Cookie Country" and "Fly, Kirby!" as motifs to general similarities with "Each to His Own World" and "Return to Dream Land" near the end. The structure of "Crossing into the Parallel with You" itself can be seen as a retelling ofMagolor's story, fate and future.

The theme opens up with an E minor string version of "C-R-O-W-N-E-D"'s intro (which, in turn, is based on the second section of "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler"). Similarly to that track, it picks up the pace soon after. Here, the first section of "Judgment of the Malus Pumila" is played by brass (notably missing the elements from "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler"). The accompaniment is softened by strings replacing the original percussion. Four phrases slowly build up, ending similarly to the transitional sections of "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" — that is, with a natural minor circle around the tonic. The supporting strings, bell and xylophone briefly lead away from E minor, functionally surrounding what would seem to be G minor. The section ends with a D minor variant of the melody of "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler". The track then jumps back to E minor to repeat "Judgment of the Malus Pumila"; however, the tonality is less sombre, as it begins gaining D major harmonies. This instability allows it to modulate to A minor, where Magolor's two themes alternate. "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler" concludes in C major, after which it is followed by an A minor variant of the latter half of "Fly, Kirby!", albeit without the expected "Kirby's Triumphant Return". Instead, "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" makes its final appearance, notably in the rhythm of "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler", revealing their innate similarity. In tonally blurred major seventh chords, "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler" plays with brass accentuation and prepares the return of D major. Here, much like in "Mistilteinn, Tree Crown without a Ruler", a hopeful version of "Road to Victory" plays, where the subsequent B minor version of Magolor's theme only contributes to the general major. "Road to Victory" repeats with an added cello counterpoint of "Four Adventurers: Cookie Country". In conclusion of the section, the ending phrase of "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler" plays, ending in a rising major fourth alluding to "Green Greens". The music fades briefly.

As the credits illustrations begin to show Magolor in theDream Kingdom,Kirby Clash music follows: a gentle flute version of "Ordeal" with piano accompaniment and celesta counterpoint picks up almost immediately in D major. After a short cymbal roll, "Ordeal" is repeated more confidently by an English horn with string support, and instruments keep building up. Suddenly, the piano initiates a modulation to F-sharp major through the final phrase of "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler" while brass responds with a slowed down "Green Greens" fourth. The pace somewhat picks up again with a string and brass duo of "Town" with occasional fuller phrases of "Green Greens". Its "Ordeal" phrase serves as a dominant suspense, after which the music transitions to its third large section, featuring music fromStory Mode. Alluding to the endings of "Each to His Own World" and "Return to Dream Land", it accelerates significantly and proceeds with a harmonic F-sharp major version of "Four Adventurers: Cookie Country", resolving in the same fashion as "Each to His Own World" (with a variant of the descending phrase from "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler") and ending up in D major again for "Return to Dream Land"'s final version of "Halcandra: A New Enemy" (albeit without "Road to Victory", instead featuring "Green Greens"). After slowing down, the track ends with a majestic iteration of the "Green Greens" phrase of "Kirby's Triumphant Return" with powerful brass and percussion, and a final timpani conclusion and drum roll.

Trivia[edit]

  • The name of this theme in Japanese, English and Korean uses the term "parallel", which has been used other times in the series, including by series directorShinya Kumazaki, to refer toalternate realities in the series. Other languages make it more explicit by using the term "parallel dimension" or "parallel universe". Specifically in this case, the term is referring to theDream Kingdom, which has been called a "parallel" before, and Magolor, during the credits sequence in which this theme plays, "crosses into (that) parallel".
