"Corkboard"[Japanese title] is a theme inKirby Super Star and its remake,Kirby Super Star Ultra.
Composition[edit]

"Corkboard" is in the key of C major. At 136 beats per minute, it has a somewhat fast-paced marching rhythm; it also has a decisive tone, but no real melody, instead consisting entirely of chords. The chords give a jazzy impression, as if a band is warming up, which suits the scenario it plays in within the game. The main part is played by woodwind instruments, accompanied by an 8-bit bass and a simple drum set. The bass typically hits the first and fifth notes of the current chord, but sometimes walks up to transition to the next chord, another jazzy flair.
The tune starts out with a syncopated rhythmic pattern consisting of C6 to A flat major 7 (I–bVI). Throughout, the middle voice of the chords jumps up and down, occasionally changing the chords (for example, turning the first C6 into a C major 7 briefly). After repeating this pattern once, the chords lower to F major 7 and rise to A flat major 7, then back to F major 7 (IV–bVI–IV). The chords walk down from E minor 7 to D minor 7 (iii–ii), then back up to G9 to return to C6 (a jazzyii–V–I turnaround).
Then, the tune repeats the entire process a second time, but the second time through, the ending is instead a walk up from A flat minor 7 to D flat 7 before returning to C6 (bvi–bII–I). During the D flat 7 chord, the top voice of the woodwinds briefly plays a sixteenth-note run to jump back to the beginning of the theme. The entire track lasts about 28 seconds before looping.[1]
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby Super Star /Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]
"Corkboard" plays on the mode select screen, which is a rather fitting corkboard — this is where the track gets its name, continuing the trend of early games giving music very literal names. It is track 2 in theSound Test of both games.
InKirby Super Star Ultra specifically, "Hidden Corkboard" may play instead after The True Arena is unlocked.
