This article is about the items on pedestals containingCopy Abilities found in all main seriesKirby games, and should not be confused withAbility Items.
Touching an item known as a Copy Essence allows you to take on the Copy Ability shown on it.
— Kirby's Return to Dream Land Instruction manual bio (page 7)

Copy Essences,[1] also known asEnemy Symbols inKirby Super Star,[2] andCopy Pedestals inKirby & The Amazing Mirror,[3] are items first introduced inKirby Super Star, reappearing in its remake,Kirby Super Star Ultra. They have since reappeared - with an identical purpose - in every main seriesKirby title, up to and includingKirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World (exceptingKirby: Squeak Squad, which instead featuresbubbles containing abilities).

Each Copy Essence resembles a golden pedestal with a figurine of a certain enemy standing on top or the symbol of aCopy Ability in some games in the series. When Kirby touches such a pedestal, he is instantly awarded theCopy Ability appropriate to the enemy/icon displayed. For example, if Kirby touches a Copy Essence with a figurine of aBlade Knight, Kirby will get theSword ability. If Kirby already possesses an ability, his current power will be replaced inKirby Super Star and its remake, as well as in main-series games sinceKirby's Return to Dream Land, whereas in other games, nothing will happen until he drops his Copy Ability.[3] Every Copy Essence can be used an unlimited amount of times. Apart from being found sporadically throughout games, they usually appear in unlockable rooms containing most of the game's abilities, as well as featuring prominently inThe Arena and similarBoss Endurance modes.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby Super Star /Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

In theOld Tower area inThe Great Cave Offensive, Copy Essences for theSleep ability are used as obstacles guarding aTreasure.

Copy Essences debut inKirby Super Star, and also appear inKirby Super Star Ultra. In their debut appearance, they showcase a figurine of the enemy associated with the ability on its pedestal. Touching one automatically confers the represented ability to Kirby, and will also automatically change aHelper to the different corresponding character.

In theDyna Blade game, stages featuring collections of Copy Essences can be unlocked by hitting theBig Switches inMallow Castle and inCandy Mountain.

In theMilky Way Wishes sub-game, a special variety of Copy Essence known asCopy Essence Deluxe appears; this item permanently enables Kirby to assume the Copy Ability shown by it at any time and disappears upon being collected.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]

InKirby & The Amazing Mirror, two Copy Pedestals appear in each Hub room (small rooms which interlink areas) and three in each room leading up to aBoss fight. The onlyCopy Abilities that do not appear in a Copy Pedestal are single use ones,Mini andUFO, which must be obtained by swallowingUFO enemies in certain areas or by aMix. All Copy Essences can be accessed in aCopy Ability Room inCentral Circle that requires hitting all theBig Switches to unlock.

TheMaster sword's pedestal (which appears in the Central Circle after beating the game) essentially acts as the Copy Essence for the Master Copy Ability.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

Starting withKirby's Return to Dream Land, Copy Essences do not resemble the enemies they are obtained from anymore. Instead, they contain a likeness of theAbility Star for the ability in question, displaying the ability's symbol on its face. Kirby can gain access to 20 of these from within theLor Starcutter once he has collected enoughEnergy Spheres to unlock every room.

InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, 25 Copy Abilities are now accessible from the Lor Starcutter, with the additional five being the new and limited-use abilities (minusSleep). Additionally, theRandom Copy Essence returns fromKirby: Planet Robobot, which cycles through every possible ability except for Sleep. Said essence appears inDangerous Dinner - Stage 3,Another Dimension,The Arena andThe True Arena. Like inKirby Star Allies andKirby and the Forgotten Land, mid-bosses now drop their respective Copy Essences when defeated.

A Random Copy Essence can also be obtained as aSouvenir Item, which cycles through Copy Abilities in the same order as aMix roulette, at a slower pace.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

Kirby near four Copy Essences inKirby: Triple Deluxe. From left to right:Circus,Bell,Beetle,Archer.

InKirby: Triple Deluxe, Copy Essences appear unchanged from theirKirby's Return to Dream Land appearance. Beating the game once allows Kirby to access theCopy Ability Testing Area, filled with Copy Essences of everyCopy Ability.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Copy Essences once again remain unchanged inKirby: Planet Robobot. The onlyCopy Ability that does not appear in a Copy Essence isUFO, which requires the player to attain100% completion (which makesUFO appear in the Ability Testing Room) or scan a Kirbyamiibo.

ARandom Copy Essence that cycles very fast through everyCopy Ability besidesSleep,Smash Bros., and UFO can be found inAccess Ark - Stage 6,Access Ark - Stage 7 EX, The Arena and The True Arena. In the boss endurance modes, this special Copy Essence appears in both the main hub where players select their ability, and between subsequent fights. The exceptions to this are before the fights againstC.O.G.S. andStar Dream, which use theJet Mode andHalberd Mode respectively.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Four Copy Essences from theAbility Planet inKirby Star Allies. From left to right:Yo-Yo,Ninja,Sword,Whip.

InKirby Star Allies, Copy Essences once again resemble the enemies/allies who provide them. Kirby cantoss a friend heart directly at one to immediately gain the appropriatefriend.

Main article:Reset Platform

Stages that contain boss fights at the end of them have big platforms with four empty Copy Essences, calledReset Platforms, present before the battle. If the player holds Y on these platforms, Kirby's currentCopy Ability and all of hisfriends will be removed then transferred to each of the four Copy Essence pedestals.

Main article:Ability Planet

After completing the game once, Kirby can access all of the Copy Essences with each ability at theAbility Planet. The only Copy Abilities that are not represented in a Copy Essence are the limited-use abilities likeCrash,Mike andFestival, which are replaced by their respective enemies in the stage. Likewise, Kirby cannot get rid of these abilities using a Reset Platform.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land /Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World[edit]

A Copy Essence forBomb fromKirby and the Forgotten Land.

InKirby and the Forgotten Land and itsNintendo Switch 2 Edition, Copy Essences can appear before boss and mid-boss encounters. Here, they resemble their correspondingAbility Items, but on golden podiums. Notably, if Kirby touches one while using aMouthful Mode transformation, he will gain the ability without any transformation animation. In most cases,mid-bosses now leave behind the Copy Essence corresponding to their Copy Ability after being defeated.

In theKirby novel series[edit]

Kirby andWaddle Dee observe the newfound Copy Essences inKirby Meets the Squeak Squad!

In theKirby novel series, Copy Essences appear inKirby Meets the Squeak Squad!. They are found in a room deep in the temple thatKirby andWaddle Dee discover. The room is full of a variety of different Copy Essences. Only Kirby can use them; nothing happens when Waddle Dee touches one.

After dodging many traps in the temple, Kirby and Waddle Dee reach the Copy Essence room. Kirby is very happy to see such a convenient stash of these for him to use. He goes for the one that gives him theFire ability before going deeper into the temple with Waddle Dee. Later in the story, Kirby, Waddle Dee, andKing Dedede reach the room again when they return to the temple to give back the egg they were trusted with. They prepare to have a lunch break in the room, but their lunch is cut short when theSqueaks enter the room to take the egg. Kirby chooses the Fire essence again to fight back.

Copy Essences return inKirby: Meta Knight and the Galaxy's Greatest Warrior where Kirby, King Dedede, Waddle Dee, and theMeta-Knights purchase a bag full of Copy Essences from a shady merchant. Kirby uses several throughout the novel, such asWing,Cupid, and Fire. However, a babySphere Doomer takes a liking to the assortment of Copy Essences and eventually carries it away into adimensional rift.

Copy Essences return once again inKirby: Meta Knight and the Monster of the Magic Stone, where they are given to Kirby byWeapons-Shop Waddle Dee. This allows Kirby to easily use various abilities throughout the story, such asSword,Jet andESP.

Trivia[edit]

  • InKirby's Adventure andKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, the stationary enemies found inMuseums fulfill a similar purpose to Copy Essences, enabling Kirby to acquire an ability without the need of overcoming a dangerous opponent to obtain it.
  • Occasionally,Sleep Essences are seen as obstacles in various stages, with the point being that Kirby should try to avoid them, lest he be put to sleep.
  • Prior to Version 4.0.0 ofKirby Star Allies, if aDream Friend touched a Copy Essence, they would be forced to transform into the respectiveFriend. The former can still transform into a Friend if the Dream Friend in question is controlled by another player.
