Cleaning

Cleaning, originally known asClean orBroom,[1] is one of eightCopy Abilities thatKirby can acquire from his enemies inKirby's Dream Land 3. It also appears as an ability inKirby Star Allies, which currently makes it the ability with the longest gap between two appearances. The ability can be obtained from broom-related enemies, and its attacks are also usually associated with cleaning or broom-related activities.
Characteristics[edit]
In its most basic form inKirby's Dream Land 3, Cleaning is somewhat unremarkable, only involving Kirby sweeping the ground with a broomstick, throwing up dust that can harm enemies at very close range. Its true potential comes when paired with anAnimal Friend, giving Kirby a number of much more potent techniques, including dashing forward withNago, sweeping in a much larger area withCoo, and even flying withChuChu. InKirby Star Allies, Cleaning is upgraded significantly, giving Kirby much more effective broom sweeps and also allowing him to call on many of his animal combinations at will. The Cleaning ability is also able to give the Bluster and SplashPower Effects to friends. InKirby: Right Back at Ya! andKirby Star Allies, Kirby wears a yellow or white bandana with green stars on it when he has this ability.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]
When Kirby orGooey possesses the Clean ability inKirby's Dream Land 3, they may use a broom to clean the area in front of them when the Y button is pressed. Apart from being able to hurt enemies with the cleaning instrument itself, performing this action causes white dust clouds to be raised in front of Kirby or Gooey, which act as harmful projectiles towards opponents. As such, they can be reflected back by aDogon. Holding the Y button will cause Kirby or Gooey to continue sweeping in place, and holding "up" will direct the dust upwards to hit airborne enemies more easily.
The Clean ability or one of its combinations is required to obtain three separateHeart Stars in the game: Clean +Pitch forKamuribana's star in the first stage ofRipple Field, the base ability or any combination forOba-chan's star in the second stage ofSand Canyon and Clean +Coo or Clean +Rick forHibanamodoki's star in the firstCloudy Park stage.
Combinations[edit]
Like other Copy Abilities, the basic Clean ability can be enhanced by uniting with anAnimal Friend, the resulting power depending on the Friend that Kirby teams up with. The following combinations are possible:
| Friend | Appearance | Description |
|---|---|---|
| ChuChu | While the Y button is held, ChuChu and Kirby or Gooey ride on a flying broom, the bottom end of which can harm enemies. | |
| Coo | Kirby or Gooey stop and use Coo as a living feather duster, defeating enemies in front of him. | |
| Kine | While the Y button is held, a plunger protrudes from Kine's mouth. All enemies touched by the plunger will stick to it; these can be pushed into other enemies to harm them or launched as projectiles by letting go of the button. | |
| Nago | Nago dashes forward while the Y button is held, polishing the floor with Kirby and sweeping it clean of enemies. Nago cannot jump or turn around while using this power. | |
| Pitch | Pitch briefly transforms into a bucket, letting Kirby or Gooey chuck a large blob of water at enemies. Holding "up" while doing so causes him to throw it at a higher angle. | |
| Rick | Rick cleans the area directly in front of him with a blue feather duster, harming opponents. |
Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]
While the ability is not present in the game itself, it does appear as two of the collectibleKeychains, one being Kirby using the ability alone, while the other is the combination with ChuChu.
Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Clean returns in this title after a 21-year absence from the series, now calledCleaning. When Kirby gains the Cleaning ability, he is given a broom and a white bandanna with green stars on it. The ability gains a number of combo attacks, much like other abilities in the game, with several causing theAnimal Friends fromKirby's Dream Land 3 to cameo in the process. Cleaning also gives theBluster element with its standard sweeps along with 'CleanChuChu', while theSplash element is provided through the 'CleanNago' and 'CleanPitch' moves.Broom Hatter represents the ability as itsFriend.
Cleaning also has access to its ownFriend Ability by simply holding ↑, known asFriend Super-Vac, in which Kirby takes out a vacuum cleaner. This Friend Ability is one of the few to have an effect even if there are no Friends to help out, as enemies and various other items are sucked into the vacuum while Kirby holds it up. In addition, it is one of the abilities that can be combined withStone to use theCurling Friend Ability.

| “ | He is now Cleaning Kirby! | ” | — Meta Knight, inA Novel Approach |
InKirby: Right Back at Ya!, the Clean ability appears, under the nameCleaning. Unlike inKirby's Dream Land 3, Kirby's appearance changes when he obtains the power in the anime, causing him to don a yellow bandanna with green stars.
In a similar manner to theKirby's Dream Land 3 base ability, Cleaning enables Kirby to use a broom to attack; unlike in the game, however, it possesses a blue handle, looks more modern overall and is able to generate colorful stars instead of dust clouds when swung.

The ability first appears in the episodeA Novel Approach. Here, Kirby acquires it by absorbing one of the brooms sent at him and his friends byBroom King, aMonster that resembles Haboki. After obtaining it, Kirby uses the ability to brush numerous besoms aside, proceeds to use it as a blunt melee weapon against Broom King itself and eventually sweeps a large cloud of dust back at his adversary with it. Similarly to the Clean + ChuChu combination, Kirby subsequently climbs onto the cleaning instrument and uses it to fly, pursuing Broom King through the air and defeating it with a final sway of his broom. Although he does not use the ability anymore afterwards, Kirby keeps his Cleaning attire and broom until the end of the episode.
Cleaning reappears inA Trashy Tale, where Kirby acquires it from a besom thrown to him byMeta Knight. In this episode, Kirby makes use of the ability to knock the various forms of waste sent at him byTrash Basher out of the way, as well as eventually finish off the trash can monster itself when it has run out of refuse.
After disposing of Trash Basher, Kirby finally demonstrates the ability's literal cleaning powers, using the colorful, sparkling energy generated by his broom to do away with all the garbage that has accumulated inChief Bookem's house and all overCappy Town throughout the episode.

- CleanNago's cry inKirby Star Allies is sampled fromShinya Kumazaki's deceased pet cat, Tom, whose voice was also used forStar Dream.[2]
