— Vs. Clanky Woods Special Page inKirby: Planet Robobot

Clanky Woods is a mechanized version ofWhispy Woods that appears inKirby: Planet Robobot, appearing primarily as the boss ofPatched Plains; the first level of the game. Among other things, theHaltmann Works Company outfitted Clanky Woods with spider-like legs with drills for tips, which greatly increases its mobility and attack power, along with parts that allow it to shoot missiles and modify the environment using a giant screw.Kirby first encounters this mechanical monstrosity inStage 1 of the level, where he has to outrun it, but later fights the boss in proper fashion in a circular arena. Much later on, Clanky Woods appears again inStage 8 EX of theAccess Ark, where Kirby dispatches it much more quickly using theRobobot Armor. InMeta Knightmare Returns andThe True Arena, Clanky Woods is upgraded into an "environmentally-friendly" version namedClanky Woods 2.0.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

In its debut appearance, Clanky Woods is encountered three times during the story. Its first appearance is toward the end ofStage 1 ofPatched Plains. After Kirby enters the area, a bunch of fleeingWaddle Dees pass him by. From there, Clanky enters the scene using its four drill legs, roars upon noticing Kirby, and starts to chase him down. Its only attacks here are to shoot missiles at Kirby or to use Skewer Drill by hovering above him for a short time before drilling down into the ground. During this phase, Clanky can be attacked and defeated, but it is only necessary to escape it by continuing to the left. Defeating Clanky here, however, will reward Kirby with the stage's raresticker as it retreats. If Kirby does not defeat Clanky Woods before entering the tube at the end of the room, Clanky will attempt to drill through it to attack Kirby, despite being incapable of reaching him. It eventually gives up after a couple tries and leaves.

Boss battle[edit]

Clanky uses a Stomping Attack in Phase 1 of the fight.

The second time it is encountered is in the boss stage itself. The first time Kirby enters the boss area, it will slowly appear from below, its green bulbs visible first, then the rest of it as it jumps up onto the semi-circle platform Kirby is situated on, roaring at the camera. Subsequent times, it simply appears on the platform, roars at Kirby, and initiates the boss battle.

The following lists all of Clanky Woods' attacks inKirby: Planet Robobot during the proper boss fight against it. Attack names are taken from official Japanese strategy guides.

Clanky Woods attacks in a fixed order on loop in Story Mode and The Arena as follows:

Attacks - Phase 1
AttackDescription
ミサイル
Missile
Clanky shoots two missiles out of its mouth cannon, which weakly home in on Kirby. These can be inhaled for theBomb ability or spat back.

Rock
Clanky drills into the ground with its front legs, causing large rocks to be dug up. It will then throw two of these large rocks at Kirby. The boulders in this fight can be inhaled for theStone ability or spat back.
フルーティタンク
Fruity Tank
Clanky jumps into the air, then hangs upside down above Kirby, shaking its canopy to make five of its pieces fall off. These pieces can hit Kirby, but they can also be destroyed or inhaled. The final three pieces it drops will linger and then explode, leaving fire in their wake, though they can be taken care of much the same way as the other bulbs.
踏みつけ攻撃
Stomping Attack
Clanky hops into the air, then lands with legs extended onto the ground, drilling that spot, causing inhalable boulders to fling out on both sides.
Clanky Woods attempts a Circle Tackle in Phase 2 of the fight.

When Clanky is knocked down to approximately half of its health, it staggers and explodes as it falls off the stage, seemingly defeated. However, it then rises back up on a giant screw platform in the center of the stage, bringing up the other half of the semi-circle platform with him, completing the ring. Clanky then jumps on the back-side of the ring and roars again, continuing the fight. Kirby and Clanky now battle around the ring, as opposed to the flat area earlier.

Attacks - Phase 2
AttackDescription
サークルタックル
Circle Tackle
Clanky halts, then begins dashing around the ring very quickly, leaving three stars behind it as it does so. It covers nearly a full lap of the ring, slowing down when it is sufficiently close to Kirby.

Rock
Clanky drills into the ground with its front legs, causing large rocks to be dug up. It will then throw two of these large rocks at Kirby, which can be inhaled or spat back.
踏みつけ攻撃
Stomping Attack
Clanky hops into the air over to Kirby's location, and as it lands, it will start drilling that spot, causing inhalable boulders to fling out on both sides. Clanky will only use this attack if Kirby is too far away for them to hit with the "Rock" move.
ミサイル
Missile
Clanky shoots two missiles out if its mouth cannon, which weakly home in on Kirby. These can be inhaled and spat back.

In this phase, Clanky Woods will always start with the Circle Tackle and Rock moves. After that, its attacks are random and primarily based on Kirby's positioning.

Drills enter Kirby's space while Clanky sits in the background in Phase 3 of the fight.

When Clanky's health is nearly depleted, it roars again, and jumps back onto the screw platform in the middle. Then, it begins twisting the screw, causing all the sections of the ring that Kirby is not standing on to rise up, forming walls and trapping Kirby in a narrow space, roaring once more. Clanky then occupies the central area, where it cannot be directly hit, much likeHR-D3's first phase inKirby's Return to Dream Land. It can still be hit when performing certain attacks, however.

Attacks - Phase 3
AttackDescription
ドリルミサイル
Drill Missile
Clanky jumps, and soon after, three drill bits fire out of the tubes on the walls. These fly across the screen in a horizontal line, then explode when they hit the other side. They can be inhaled and swallowed for theBomb ability.
フルーティタンク
Fruity Tank
Clanky wildly shakes about, causing three pieces of its canopy to fall off and bounce into Kirby's space, then bounce off-screen. If Kirby hits these pieces hard enough, they will bounce back and hit Clanky instead, dealing damage.
くしざしドリル
Skewer Drill
Clanky jumps into Kirby's space, occupying the upper portion. There, it uses its drills to attempt to stab Kirby. On its third attempt, it will stab viciously with both its drills moving in quick thrusts. However, this leaves one of its drills stuck in the ground for a moment, creating two stars and leaving it open to retaliation, as it tries to free itself.
ミサイル
Missile
Clanky fires four inhalable missiles, two on each side, that home in on Kirby.

In Story Mode and The Arena, Clanky Woods attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:

  1. Drill Missile
  2. Fruity Tank
  3. Skewer Drill
  4. Missile
  5. Fruity Tank
  6. Skewer Drill
  7. Drill Missile
  8. Missile
  9. Skewer Drill

Once Clanky is defeated, it is ruptured by small internal explosions, and rendered inoperable. Unable to move, it sits in the middle of the arena and cries tears of oil as Kirby does his dance and finishes the level.

After this boss fight, Clanky is encountered one more time inStage 8 EX of theAccess Ark. Here, Kirby can use theRobobot Armor to defeat it during another chase-down sequence. Its attacks during this chase are identical to the ones used in Stage 1 of Patched Plains. If Kirby defeats it in time, Clanky falls off-screen and explodes, leaving behind atreasure chest that contains aCode Cube.

Like most other main bosses in the game, Clanky Woods has an upgraded variant,Clanky Woods 2.0, which is fought in bothMeta Knightmare Returns andThe True Arena. It bears a black canopy, a single wide eye, and is, in general, darker compared to its normal form.

In Meta Knightmare Returns, Clanky Woods 2.0 has non-boss battle encounters much like its counterpart in Story Mode. In those encounters, its behavior is similar to its normal counterpart, though it instead attacks with two rounds of two missiles and two Skewer Drills in a row. Defeating it awards sevenMeta Points, as well as anEnergy Drink in the first encounter, and aMaxim Tomato in the second.

The following lists all of Clanky Woods 2.0's attacks inMeta Knightmare Returns andThe True Arena. Attacks that are used in multiple of the fight's phases are summed up.

Attacks - 2.0
AttackDescription
ミサイル
Missile
Clanky 2.0 shoots two missiles out if its mouth cannon, which weakly home in on Kirby or Meta Knight. These can be inhaled for theBomb ability or spat back. Clanky 2.0 shoots two waves of these in phase 1.
In phase 2, the missiles will travel around the ring. Clanky 2.0 shoots two waves of these. Those may vary in direction. It can also rapid fire eight missiles in one direction.
In phase 3, Clanky 2.0 fires four inhalable missiles, two on each side, that home in on Kirby or Meta Knight. This attack often precedes "Skewer Drill" in the third phase.
フルーティタンク
Fruity Tank
Clanky 2.0 jumps into the air, then hangs upside-down above Kirby or Meta Knight, shaking its canopy until ten pieces fall off to hit them. These pieces can hit Kirby or Meta Knight, but they can also be destroyed or inhaled. The final three pieces it drops will linger and then explode, leaving fire in their wake, and are harder to destroy.
In phase 3, Clanky 2.0 shakes about, causing three pieces of its canopy to fall off and bounce into Kirby's or Meta Knight's space, then bounce off-screen. If Kirby or Meta Knight hit these pieces hard enough, they will bounce back and hit Clanky 2.0 instead.

Rock
Clanky 2.0 drills into the ground with its front legs, causing large rocks to be dug up. It will then throw three of these large rocks at Kirby or Meta Knight.
In phase 2, this attack works mostly the same as in phase 1, except that Clanky 2.0's boulders now home in on Kirby or Meta Knight.
In phase 3, Clanky 2.0 drills into the ground with its front legs, causing boulders to fly out of the ground, then jumps and performs another in a different location. Across all phases, the boulders can be inhaled for theStone ability or spat back, or just destroyed.
踏みつけ攻撃
Stomping Attack
Clanky 2.0 hops into the air, then lands with legs extended onto the ground, drilling that spot, causing multiple inhalable boulders to fling out on both sides.
サークルタックル
Circle Tackle
Clanky 2.0 halts, then begins dashing around the ring very quickly, leaving three stars behind it as it does so. It covers multiple full laps around the ring, slowing down when it is sufficiently close to Kirby or Meta Knight.
サークルバウンド
Circle Bound
Attack exclusive to Clanky Woods 2.0. Clanky 2.0 jumps around the ring in a circular pattern in an attempt to stomp Kirby or Meta Knight. It leaves one star after each jump.
ドリルミサイル
Drill Missile
Clanky 2.0 jumps, then six drill bits fire out of the tubes on the walls. These fly across the screen in a horizontal lines, then explode when they hit the other side. They can be swallowed for theBomb ability, or destroyed by an attack.
くしざしドリル
Skewer Drill
Clanky 2.0 jumps into Kirby's or Meta Knight's space, occupying the upper portion. There, it uses its drills to attempt to prod Kirby or Meta Knight. Its last attack leaves its drill stuck in the ground for a moment, creating two stars and leaving it open to retaliation. Clanky 2.0 recovers from this faster than regular Clanky.

In phase 1 in Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena, Clanky Woods 2.0 always starts with a Missile attack before attacking in a fixed order on loop as follows:

  1. Fruity Tank
  2. Rock
  3. Stomping Attack
  4. Missile
  5. Fruity Tank
  6. Missile
  7. Stomping Attack
  8. Rock

In phase 2 in Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena, Clanky Woods always starts with Circle Tackle. After that, the rest of its attacks in this phase are randomly chosen.

In phase 3 in Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena, Clanky Woods 2.0 attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:

  1. Stomping Attack
  2. Drill Missile
  3. Missile
  4. Skewer Drill
  5. Drill Missile
  6. Fruity Tank
  7. Skewer Drill
  8. Drill Missile

Trivia[edit]

  • Despite being described as a mechanized form of Whispy Woods, Clanky Woods is consistently referred to with the gender-neutral term "it", where Whispy is typically referred to with the male "he". It is unclear whether or not this discrepancy was intentional.
