Power up in the city, then compete in the Stadium!
— Main Menu caption

City Trial is one of the game modes and the most extensive inKirby Air Ride andKirby Air Riders. Unlike the other two modes ofAir Ride andTop Ride, it is not strictly a racing game, instead pitting multiple players (up to four inKirby Air Ride, up to sixteen inKirby Air Riders) against each other in a large open city where the goal is to power up theirAir Ride Machines and then face off in a separateStadium match using those machines once time runs out. During the match, riders can attempt to battle each other to destroy their opponents' machines or simply to steal their power-ups. However, the winner is ultimately decided by whoever wins the Stadium game, which is randomly selected and could favor a a rider a machine which, while not objectively the best, is still the most suitable for that particular game. Like the other modes, in both games, City Trial features its own tutorial and ending movies in, as well as scoreboards, extra modes and settings, and aChecklist

Gameplay[edit]

Race around the city and collect items to power up then compete in the Stadiums with the machine you built!
— Kirby Air Ride North American instruction booklet, page 7
Gameplay of City Trial inKirby Air Ride (left) andKirby Air Riders (right).

UnlikeAir Ride andTop Ride, City Trial is not a racing mode by any traditional meaning of the phrase. When the game begins, riders are placed at disparate positions in a large open area and given a couple minutes to explore. Each rider starts with aCompact Star, which is not very useful for much other than smooth steering through the city streets. The objective then is to find a better machine to ride and improve the machine's various attributes withpatches that can be found either in boxes or out in the open. Additionally, many items appear which can be used against the other racers to either slow them down, steal their patches, or destroy their machines, forcing them to find another. Since switching machines is a mechanic in this mode, riders is able to jump off of any machine they are riding and continue on foot, though without a machine, they cannot pick up items, interact with stage elements likeSuper Jump Ramps, or defend themselves from their opponents. InKirby Air Riders, it is also possible to instantly swap to vacant machines without manually jumping off. During the time allotted, randomField Events can occur within the city, which may present a hazard or opportunity to the racers, or may just be a brief inconvenience.

Once time runs out, a results screen appears showing the stats and vehicles of each rider, and then they are taken to aStadium game (which is always random by default inKirby Air Ride, but can usually be picked/voted for from a random selection of four inKirby Air Riders) to compete with the machines they managed to obtain and power up. Whoever wins this game is the overall winner, regardless of how well they did in the city prior to the Stadium.

Power-ups[edit]

The results screen showing the final stats for four players inKirby Air Ride (left) and one player inKirby Air Riders (right).

There are nine different stats which riders can enhance/drain using power-uppatches (details below). Riders can also attack each other to steal these patches and thus downgrade their opponents. These stats are as follows:

  1. Boost - Determines how fast a machine accelerates to top speed, as well as the speed of aBoost Dash after charging up a machine. Also causes a machine to stop faster while charging.
  2. Top Speed - Determines the maximum speed at which a machine can coast without assistance. Depending on the machine and/or the situation, it may be detrimental to have this stat very high. Machines with a high top speed already - such as theFormula Star - receive very little benefit from this stat.
  3. Turn - Determines how quickly a machine can turn. Depending on the machine and/or the situation, it may be detrimental to have this stat very high.
  4. Charge - Determines how quickly the Boost Gauge on a machine can fill up. Vehicles such as theBulk Star andHydra benefit greatly from this stat, while theWagon Star makes no use of it whatsoever.
  5. Glide - Determines how long a machine can glide before having to come back down again. Vehicles which cannot glide (such as bike-type machines) instead get a higher jump when going off of ramps.
  6. Weight - One of the more complicated stats. It slightly increases a machine's top speed and the power/defense of ramming attacks. It also slightly increases how quickly it falls while in the air, hindering gliding ability.
  7. Offense - Increases the amount ofdamage a machine can do to other riders and enemies. Also makes attacked opponents drop their patches and legendary-machine parts more often.
  8. Defense - Reduces the amount of damage and knockback a machine takes from opponents and stage hazards. Also makes it harder to drop patches and legendary machine parts when being hit.
  9. HP - Increases the maximumHP of a machine. This is the only stat which cannot be negative.

Additionally, in rare instances, anAll Up patch may appear, which powers up every stat by 1.

Before the Stadium, all stats are displayed, but they can also be viewed earlier by checking the pause screen (which inKirby Air Ride can only be done if the "Pause Screen Power-Ups" feature is unlocked through theChecklist).

Air Ride Machines[edit]

Throughout the city portion of City Trial, variousAir Ride Machines will spawn. These vacant machines can be used by dismounting the existing machine and then simply touching them, or (inKirby Air Riders only) pressing theSpecial button while near a vacant machine to swap off the one currently being used. They are usually at full health when spawned, but may rarely appear with extremely low health.

If a rider's machine runs out of HP, it will be destroyed, forcing them to look for another machine.

When time runs out, all riders will enter the Stadium with the machine they are currently riding. Riders who jumped off their machine before getting on a new one will be given the last machine they were riding. However, if another player took their machine, or if their machine was destroyed, they will instead be put onto the Compact Star.

InKirby Air Ride, in extremely rare cases, by hitting a wall while traveling at very high speeds, it is possible to jam the machine into the wall[1], rendering it immobile (similar toTarget Flight). If this happens, the machine will be unable to steer, move, or charge, with the only option being able to jump off the machine and abandon it. It cannot be re-mounted afterwards. However, if time runs out and the machine has not yet been replaced, it will still be used in the Stadium.

InKirby Air Riders, if the rider is about to mount an Air Ride Machine after losing their previous one (either from another rider stealing it or the machine getting destroyed), the machine will be protected by a barrier, preventing other riders from attempting to destroy it.[2]

Legendary Air Ride Machines[edit]

In City Trial, it is possible to obtain special Air Ride machines, referred to aslegendary Air Ride Machines, which can be assembled during the city portion of City Trial by collecting their three parts, which can be found in Red Boxes (and Rare Boxes inKirby Air Riders), or occasionally out in the open, replacing whichever machine was being ridden in a flashy cutscene once all three are found.Kirby Air Ride features two legendary machines, being theDragoon (known for its superior flight) and theHydra (known for its incredible offense and top speed).Kirby Air Riders features two more legendary machines, those beingLeo (which can jump, automatically attacks, and leaves a trail of flames behind) andGigantes (known for its gigantic size, and when kept until the Stadium forces every rider to participate inVS. Gigantes). Unlike other machines, they are initially found each in three parts and are automatically acquired once one racer has all three for the corresponding machine. When a legendary-machine part is acquired, this is visible for all other riders (a loud sound also plays inKirby Air Ride), who can then attempt to steal that part by attacking the rider. However, there is no guarantee (especially in shorter matches) that all three parts for a corresponding machine will appear during a game.

To unlock the legendary Air Ride machines for use in City Trial'sFree Run (as well asAir Ride andTop Ride's Free Run and Time Attack), a certain set of City TrialChecklist tasks need to be completed.

Field Events[edit]

Main article:Field Event

Field Events (called simply "events" inKirby Air Ride), if they are turned on, trigger every couple minutes during the city portion of City Trial. These random events vary, and they can help or hinder riders depending on the situation. Some events indicate where it is happening, using a red arrow and noting the distance. On the map, a flashing yellow circle with an exclamation mark indicates the location of the event. Most Field Events can grant riders a great number of patches, sometimes including the rare All Up patch. In other cases, the frequency of an All-Up appearing increases in some events.

More details on events, as well as a full list of them for both games, can be found on theField Event page.

Kirby Air Ride[edit]

Map[edit]

This map is loaded with free-roaming fun!

This is different from Air Ride and Top Ride: you can race around with no designated route or course progression. It's just a big city map for you to explore as you wish!
You can also jump atop skyscrapers and ride around or explore the underground! Explore everywhere and get to know your way around!

— Kirby Air Ride North American instruction booklet, page 37

InKirby Air Ride, City Trial takes in a city on an island, and it is not (supposed to be) possible to venture too far from the shores. When the game begins, the competing Kirbys will be placed somewhere in or near the city center, and always above ground.

The map to the right shows an overhead view of the entire City Trial island (though underground portions are not shown here). The areas are labeled as follows (with official names listed inbold):

An annotated map of City Trial inKirby Air Ride.
  1. Northern shoreline
  2. Castle Hall (and rail station)
  3. Northeastern shoreline (and whirlpool)
  4. City Wharf (and rail station)
  5. Southeastern shoreline
  6. City Lighthouse
  7. Electric Lounge (and rail station)
  8. Dilapidated Houses
  9. Waterwheel andHigh Plains plateau
  10. Green Canvas (and rail station)
  11. High Plains golf course
  12. Garden in the Sky
  13. Forest (Whispy Woods is here)
  14. Heat Top (and rail station)
  15. Volcano
  16. Volcanic cliffs (nothing spawns here)
  17. Copy Chance Wheel
  18. City Center
  19. Star Pole
  20. Underground Skylight

*Note that the numbering on this map is arbitrary, and the specificity of locations listed could be greater or lesser.

There are a few underground passages which connect the lower part of the city center to the volcano and to the forest area. The three most prominent underground chambers are the garage located under the city center (where all the Air Ride Machines are parked in Free Run), the chamber under the forest where a number of miniature models of city buildings can be seen, and the chamber inside the volcano which is frozen over. This last chamber is connected to the rest of the underground via a small one-way rail line past frozen pillars and leads through a wall that only blocks from one side.

Additionally, the city has a number of interactive elements, including boost pads, breakable structures (like trees, rocks, coral, and the dilapidated houses to name a few), jump pads, rail lines, sky rings, a whirlpool, and two flaming dragons. Of these, only the flaming dragons can actually harm the Kirbys.

There are also a couple of small flowers which can be found in the city (though are purely decorative). One is on the volcanic cliffs, while the other is on the very top of Castle Hall.

Items[edit]

City Trial inKirby Air Ride offers a wide variety of items that the Kirbys can use to improve their machine, damage other machines, or hinder their machine. Many items can be found scattered, but breaking a specific colored box by colliding or quick-spinning into it releases specific items. The Kirbys cannot collect items if they are not riding on a machine.

Found in Blue Boxes[edit]

Items found in Blue Boxes
PictureNameDescription
FoodReplenishes a small amount of the machine's HP. Some food items heal slightly more than others.
Energy DrinkReplenishes some of the machine's HP.
Maxim TomatoReplenishes all of the machine's HP.
Boost PatchIncreases the machine's boosting power after a charge-up and prevents sliding during a charge. Also increases acceleration (The Japanese term for the Boost stat is actually カソクacceleration).
Top Speed PatchIncreases the machine's top speed. May be a detriment if too many are collected.
Turn PatchIncreases the machine's handling. May be a detriment if too many are collected.
Charge PatchIncreases the machine's charging rate, allowing it to build up boost power faster.
Glide PatchIncreases the machine's gliding capabilities. Increases the jump height of machines which cannot glide. The more Glide points the machine has, the more damage it takes, and vice versa.[3]
Weight PatchIncreases the machine's weight, preventing the machine from levitating upwards. Also helps the machine fare better during collisions and slightly improves speed. The more Weight points the machine has, the less damage it takes, and vice versa.[3]
Offense PatchIncreases the machine's offensive capabilities, which includes collision damage,Quick Spin, and damage output of items and abilities.
Defense PatchIncreases the machine's defensive capabilities, reducing all forms of damage taken.
HP PatchIncreases the machine's HP level. There is no fake, or gray, version of this Patch. Any HP Patches found in blue boxes is just one Patch instead of 2 or more, unless an event occurs.
All Up PatchIncreases all the machine's abilities by 1 point. This rare Patch is usually found in events such as the UFO, or very rarely in blue boxes, or simply appearing. There are no fake or gray versions of this Patch. This patch cycles through all the colors of the other patches, rather than having any one specific color. These Patches appear normally (by appearing or being found in blue boxes) more often when the player playsStadium:VS. King Dedede, but they are still rare.

Found in Red Boxes[edit]

PictureNameDescription
Bomb PanelA bomb appears on Kirby's hands. The farther the player holds A, the farther Kirby throws it. The explosion does small damage but covers a large radius that slowly increases in size until it disappears.
Fire PanelThis ability allows Kirby to toss fire balls that stay on the ground. It damages any opponent that drives over the flames. The Fire ability also makes Kirby's body damaging to touch.
Freeze PanelWhen Kirby obtains this ability, he is able to create a surrounding, short-ranged projectile of Ice that protects himself and freezes other enemies that touch it.
Mike PanelThe Mike ability gets activated automatically when Kirby obtains it. Kirby sings and does slight damage to anyone over a huge range.
Needle PanelNot too different from the Freezing ability, the Needle ability allows Kirby to extend Needles that protect him and damage any opponent near the spikes. It can also damage when Kirby simply touches opponents without activating the ability.
Plasma PanelVery much like inKirby Super Star, Kirby can charge up his energy levels when the player wiggles the control stick back and forth. This ability lasts depending on how much the player uses it and how much power it uses up.
  • Level 1: Kirby punches several small beams
  • Level 2: Kirby punches more small beams
  • Level 3: Kirby shoots out three, straight moving sparks
  • Level 4: Kirby shoots out a single, homing spark
  • Level 5: Kirby kicks a huge, homing ball of electricity
Sleep PanelThe Sleep ability causes Kirby to sleep, which makes him lose control of his vehicle and makes other opponents fall asleep if they touch him. He can be woken up quicker if the player wiggles the control stick back and forth.
Sword PanelThe Sword ability lets Kirby automatically swing his sword at any nearby opponents and boxes.
Tornado PanelThe Tornado ability grants Kirby a powered up quick spin that can be performed midair. When Kirby first gets this ability, any nearby opponent gets affected by the start-up attack.
Wheel PanelThis copy ability turns Kirby into a wheel. It is quite fast, touches the ground so it activates any switches on the ground, and damages any opponents that touch it.
Wing PanelWhen Kirby gets the Wing ability, he temporarily loses his vehicle and flies using the ability. His quick spin is slightly different than the regular quick spin; it sends opponents flying in the air. Opponents cannot draft him, but he cannot draft opponents either when he has this ability.

Dragoon PartsThese are parts for the legendary Air Ride machine, theDragoon. The red boxes holding these parts may be found in sections of the map where boxes are not normally found.

Hydra PartsThese are parts for the legendary Air Ride machine, theHydra. The red boxes holding these parts may be found in sections of the map where boxes are not normally found.

Found in Green Boxes[edit]

Gold SpikeKirby receives threeGordos to throw when he grabs this item. When thrown, the Gordos grow to huge sizes. These Gordos inflict heavy damage to machines if any machines collide with them. If the Gordo is dropped, such as when Kirby is attacked, Kirby cannot throw any more Gordos, and the dropped Gordo remains small.
Sensor BombKirby can set this bomb in a spot. After it has set, the bomb shows its location by flashing rings that disappear eventually, concealing the location afterward. If a Kirby (on foot or on a machine) happens to be on this spot, the bomb suddenly explodes, damaging that Kirby or the machine. After a set amount of time, the bomb automatically detonates.
Panic SpinWhen Kirby receives this, his machine automatically and continuously quick-spins for a set amount of time. This can be stopped prematurely if Kirby is attacked.
FireworksThis items allows Kirby to automatically shoot fireworks out of a cone-like cannon for a set amount of time. If Kirby is attacked, he stops using this item.
Super ChargeTemporarily makes the player's machine engine go into overdrive. Boosts the machine at very high speeds, and is basically uncontrollable. Players riding on the legendaryHydra, however, must recharge after the duration ends.
No ChargeTemporarily removes the machine's charge and slows the machine. If Kirby is riding aBulk Star or aHydra when he receives this, the machine does not move.
Speed DownTemporarily slows the vehicle.
Attack UpTemporarily boosts the machine's offensive capabilities. This can be stacked with Defense Up and Speed Up.
Defense UpTemporarily boosts the machine's defensive and speed capabilities. This can be stacked with Attack Up and Speed Up.
Speed UpTemporarily boosts the machine's top speed. This can be stacked with Attack Up and Defense Up.
CandyGrants a machine temporary invincibility.

Item locations[edit]

Most items appear randomly around the city, though where they can drop is controlled to a large extent. For instance, there are some places where items drop more frequently (such as anywhere in the City Center), and places where items typically do not appear at all. Places where items do not typically appear include the following:

  • Atop Castle Hall
  • Atop the tower on the Garden in the Sky
  • Atop the Lighthouse
  • The volcanic cliffs
  • Inside the crater underneath the Heat Top
  • Atop the Volcano and along the bridge
  • In some of the smaller underground tunnels
  • In the river that runs through Green Canvas and the waterwheel

In contrast, there are a few specified areas (outside of events) where items are guaranteed to appear, though these are always blue box items. These locations are:

  • Two of the three grottos in the sides of the Volcano
  • Inside the Star Pole

Locations of Red Boxes containing Machine Parts[edit]

This red box is found in the forest. It can hold a machine part.

It is important to note that not all red boxes can yield a machine part. There are some locations where red boxes can sometimes or always yield machine parts. Any red boxes containing machine parts do not disappear (or spin, if it is the same item event), which means that once these red boxes appear, they stay there throughout the match. The machine parts that come out after the red box is broken also do not disappear.

Here is a list of locations that contain red boxes that contain machine parts. Red boxes found anywhere else never contain machine parts.

Checklist[edit]

Main article:Checklist (Kirby Air Ride)

Like the other two modes inKirby Air Ride, City Trial has aChecklist with 120 tasks, which can unlock certain features as objectives are met.

Settings and Modes[edit]

The following modes are available in City Trial inKirby Air Ride:

  • City Trial - The main mode, where racers are placed in the city and must grab power-ups before time runs out to compete in the Stadium.
  • Stadium - Up to four players (includingCPUs) can play any of the unlocked Stadium modes directly, using standard-power machines. Separate high-score tables are kept for this mode.
  • Free Run - One to four players play in the city with no items, no events, and no time limit. All of the available machines are parked in the main underground area in the city center. Cannot be played with CPUs. It is also possible to unlockMeta Knight andKing Dedede for use in Free Run mode. However, neither of them can 'disembark' in the same way that Kirby can, meaning that they can only have limited interaction with the Air Ride Machines parked underground.

Additionally, the following rules can be set for the main City Trial mode:

  • Time - Set the time limit in the city (3 - 7 minutes).
  • Game Tempo - Set the speed of the game (Normal or Slow). When set to Slow, the game will run at two-thirds the speed.
  • Stadium - Set which type of Stadium will appear at the end.
  • Events - Set whether or not events will happen in the city.

Ending[edit]

City Trial's ending is different from the other two modes in the game, as it features a cutscene showing all theAir Ride Machines in action, and no credits. Like the other endings, 100 boxes in the checklist must be filled to unlock it.

Map[edit]

Official image of Skyah, the map for City Trial inKirby Air Riders.
Main article:Skyah

InKirby Air Riders, City Trial takes place on a large floating island known asSkyah. Just like the map from the original game, Skyah features a city with numerous buildings, an underground area below the city (where theAir Ride Machines are parked inFree Run), a forest with destructible trees andWhispy Woods, a volcano that can be entered from the top to reach a hidden area below, a grassy field, a garden floating high above the island, and multiplerails used to quickly travel around the edges of the island. It also features a cave, a colosseum, a sea with a marooned ship, and many other changes.

Unlike the original game, Skyah does not always look the same. If enabled, various Field Changes may occur, including differences in the buildings found in the city, portals used to quickly travel between areas, entrances to the cave and underground mall being opened or closed, multiple background characters and topiaries of riders appearing, and various floating islands that can show up in the far distance and have a lot ofpatches (or legendary-machine parts) to be found.

  • A great number of the musical arrangements used in City Trial (particularly the events) are taken directly from the original Japanese version ofKirby: Right Back at Ya!.
  • The artwork depicting City Trial has Red Kirby riding aFlight Warp Star. Since that particular vehicle can only be used in Free Run, the specific scenario depicted is impossible without modifying the game.
  • City Trial served as the inspiration for another game mode inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS calledSmash Run. The large map, combined with the task of collecting powerups in 5 minutes before competing in a final randomly-chosen match are the main examples.
  • In the standard City Trial mode, CPUs that didn't get many powerups by the end of the match will give themselves some, effectively cheating to give the human players a greater challenge.
  • Kirby can traverse most of the City by foot. However, he cannot reach the rooftops of the city, the volcanic cliffs, or the Garden in the Sky without using an Air Ride Machine. Rarely, machines may spawn on the rooftops, meaning players who do not already have a machine will be unable to reach them, and must look elsewhere.
