Cappy New Year is the 13th (29th in the 4Kids broadcast) episode of theKirby: Right Back at Ya! series, first aired in the last days of December for 2001 in Japanese and 2002 in North America. In this episode,King Dedede andEscargoon plot to throw a massive fireworks show using the help of a newmonster calledSasuke, with the intent of launchingKirby into orbit using one of their rockets. Meanwhile, the citizens of Cappy Town get the idea of hosting their own float and fireworks show in the vain hope of outdoing the King's resources. Despite this, they host an extravagant show, and near the end, Kirby must do battle with Sasuke using theFire ability, and then escape the rocket using theParasol ability. Kirby comes floating safely down as the new year rolls over.
This episode marks the first time that multipleCopy Abilities have appeared in one episode. It is also the first episode to haveMayor Len Blustergas in a starring role.

Plot synopsis[edit]
The episode begins at Castle Dedede, where King Dedede is ordering a newmonster fromNight Mare Enterprises to get rid of Kirby for his new year's resolution. After pointing out his low funds, the Sales Guy sells Dedede a monster at a relatively low price, sending in the fireworks expertSasuke. Meanwhile, in Cappy Town, many of the principal characters have gathered to decide what, if anything they should do to celebrate the new year. Before they can elaborate, however, King Dedede and Escargoon drive in on theirArmored Vehicle and start announcing their intention to host a new year's eve celebration using fireworks, but insists that only he is allowed to plan the events. After he drives off, Tiff and the assembled crowd decide they will defy the King's orders and make their own fireworks show, which was apparently what Dedede and Escargoon had predicted they would do.
The Cappies begin their work by collecting gunpowder from the police headquarters and measuring it out. Unfortunately, this plan backfires when Kirby cluelessly brings a lit sparkler into the room, causing the entire place to explode. After this setback, the Cappies realize they don't know how to hold a celebration, so they ask Tiff for help with the planning. Tiff suggests the town set up a bunch of floats representing their various occupations and interests. During this, Lady Like mentions that Dedede has a new monster, prompting Tiff and Tuff to go to the castle to check it out. Back at the castle, Sasuke is hard at work setting up a massive structure that resembles King Dedede on its own accord, prompting the King to ask it about this. Sasuke rudely blows them off with a flurry of projectiles, which prompts Escargoon to plead with Dedede to use his rocket instead.
A short while later, Tuff, Kirby, and Fololo & Falala discover this rocket, but must soon hide behind it as Dedede and Escargoon enter the room and discuss it. Soon, Kirby loses pace trying to stay hidden and is discovered by King Dedede and Escargoon. He is soon captured by a robotic grabber and thrown at high speed into a wall, prompting Tuff to grab him and get away quickly. They report back to Cappy Town, asking them to cancel the festival, since King Dedede would be using it as a trap to get rid of Kirby, but the town refuses, insisting they can hold it regardless. That night, festivities begin as Mayor Len leads the proceedings with his own sheep-themed light float. Following floats include ones made by Chef Kawasaki, Professor Curio, Chief Bookem, and Sir Ebrum and Lady Like. As the floats march on, King Dedede reveals his displays with a massive fireworks show and float of his own. The town looks on with envy, but Tuff explains that the monster built the floats for him.
From within the King Dedede float, Sasuke uses a bomb barrage to blast the Cappies' floats down. It then targets Kirby using a bunch of bombs designed to look like him. To counter this, Kirby inhales all of the firecrackers thrown at him and gains theFire ability. Meta Knight appears on the scene to comment on this as Fire Kirby sets off against his opponent. The two exchange firecrackers as the town watches, thinking it to be part of the show. Kirby starts to falter, prompting Tiff to call in theWarp Star to help. Kirby takes off using the star, but is knocked off course by a continued barrage. Using the last of his ability, Kirby sprays one more barrage of firecrackers on the float, destroying it in a mushroom cloud explosion. Sasuke manages to escape, and runs back into the action using Escargoon's rocket as Kirby falls through the air, once again with no ability.
Sasuke lights the rocket with itself attached, launching toward Kirby and colliding with him, sending both of them high into the sky. Kirby wakes up and tries to climb down the rocket as it ascends, with Sasuke moving to intercept him. Seeing this with a telescope, Escargoon orders Captain Waddle Doo to launch the castle's remaining fireworks at the rocket. As Sasuke draws near, Kirby inhales the monster just before the rocket explodes, creating an extravagant fireworks show visible to everyone in Dream Land. The rocket itself comes crashing down right on top of the Armored Vehicle, and Kirby comes floating safely back down, having obtained theParasol ability from Sasuke. Cappy Town counts down to the new year as Kirby floats gently down. The episode ends with the words "A Happy New Year" written behind Kirby as he descends.
Differences between versions[edit]
- In the Japanese version, the scene where Chief Bookem brings out the gunpowder is a bit longer, featuring a small shot where Gus asks if the gunpowder they'll be using is like that in the Chief's guns while playing with one of them.
- When King Dedede and Escargoon demand that Sasuke answer them, the monster is clearly shown pulling out a gun and shooting at them in the Japanese version.
- In the Japanese version, there is an additional scene after the Cappies' floats get attacked where the kids gather and use their sparklers to destroy a float which resembles Escargoon. This float is left out of the international versions entirely.
Dialogue differences[edit]
- In the Japanese version, Escargoon refers to his rocket as the "Teppoudon", which is a reference to the North Korean ballistic missile called "Taepo Dong".
- In the Japanese version, while Kirby is being flung around by the robotic arm, King Dedede says he'll "have Kirby depart on his 2,001-year space odyssey", explicitly referring to thescience fiction story of the same name, as well as how the episode was aired at the end of the real-life year 2001.

- This episode marks the first use of "Strong Star Warrior", which would later become theChecker Knights theme, in the Japanese version.
- The frying pan Chef Kawasaki is holding during the festival appears to be a brown-ish color, and is not the one he normally has on hand.
