Cappy is a commonenemy that appears in most games in theKirby series, making his debut appearance inKirby's Dream Land. Cappy takes the appearance of a spotted red mushroom when he has his cap, but without it, he is revealed as a creature similar in look to a Japanesehaniwa figure: he is pale yellow and has no feet or legs, but has a pair of stubby arms which he hides along with his black eyes and dot mouth under his cap. Unlike many other recurring enemies, Cappy has had few variations.Kirby Air Riders marked his first appearance as a playable character.

Cappy's main method of attack is no more complicated than bumping intoKirby, which also hurts Cappy in turn. If Kirby tries toinhale Cappy, the creature's cap goes into Kirby's mouth instead of the whole Cappy. Once without his cap, Cappy will typically panic or sulk, and can then be defeated by spitting his cap back at him or inhaling him separately, granting Kirby noCopy Ability if swallowed. Cappy can also be defeated with or without his cap by using any other attack.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

The mushroom cap doubles as a protective cushion. Race ahead of rivals before it falls apart!
— Kirby Air Riders Direct 8.19.2025

InKirby Air Riders, Cappy appears as one of the playable Riders. His unique trait is the ability to use his cap as a shield, nullifying some incoming attacks. Cappy's Special, Booster Cap, gives him a short burst of speed. Like all other Riders in this game, Cappy can wieldCopy Abilities.[1]

Cappy, as an enemy, has a pinkish hue on his cap to differentiate the rider Cappy.

In addition to appearing as a playable character, Cappy can also be found as an enemy inKirby Melee and on the following Air Ride courses:

InKirby: Right Back at Ya![edit]

A group of Cappies of various shape and dress from an episode ofKirby: Right Back at Ya!
Main article:Cappy (anime)

In the anime seriesKirby: Right Back at Ya!, Cappies make up the primary intelligent race of creatures that reside inDream Land. Here, they are portrayed without their mushroom caps, and instead come in various shapes and sizes and sporting various articles of clothing and hair/facial hair. Several hundred Cappies live in the sole established settlement of Dream Land calledCappy Town, which is led byMayor Len Blustergas and subservient toCastle Dedede.

While most of the Cappy villagers are not explicitly named, several of them have more distinct roles and names and are recurring characters in the show. Examples include the aforementioned Mayor Len,Chief Bookem,Professor Curio, andMabel, to name a few.

In theKirby novel series[edit]

Cappy riding theJet Star inKirby: Big Race in Pupupu Land!

In theKirby novel series, Cappy appears inKirby: Big Race in Pupupu Land!, as one of the race's many contestants, and makes minor appearances inKirby: The Dream Onsen is a Good Hot Spring♪ andKirby: Great Duel at a Quick Draw Contest!. He is a peaceful resident ofDream Land with a timid personality. He is always seen with his mushroom hat, which sometimes pops off to show his expression. Here, Cappy is an individual character, rather than a species.

InKirby: Big Race in Pupupu Land!, Cappy appears at the beginning, where he is talking withWalky. Cappy brings up a rumor about a giant footprint being spotted in Dream Land, with growling noises heard near it. Cappy thinks there could be a monster in Dream Land, but Walky laughs it off and does not believe him. Right when they finish talking, a giant spaceship lands nearby, and the two head over to meet a TV producer namedKizario, who plans to film a race in Dream Land. Walky is excited, but Cappy is skeptical about this, and is unsure about trusting Kizario. At the race, Cappy's vehicle of choice is theJet Star, which flies up into the sky immediately. Cappy is terrified at this, screaming that he is afraid of heights. This makes the other contestants realize that they should be careful when choosing a vehicle. Throughout the rest of the story, Cappy is always grouped with the rest of the racers, and does not stand out.

Cappy cameos inKirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!!, where he is shown to have gotten a leaflet fromWaddle Dee.
