Burning

- This article is about the ability Burning, once called Fireball, and should not be confused withFire, another similarly-named fire ability.
Burning (also known asBurn,Flame, orFireball, and even erroneouslyFire occasionally) is aCopy Ability obtained by absorbing specific types of fiery enemies in earlyKirby games, and it givesKirby the ability to charge towards his enemies while being engulfed in flames. This ability, though similar in element, is distinct from the earlyFire ability, which instead involves breathing a cone of flame while holding still. This is one of Kirby's oldest Copy Abilities, making its debut inKirby's Adventure, though it has largely been subsumed into Fire's moveset in later titles.
Characteristics[edit]

The Burning ability is one of Kirby's most distinct and iconic powers from the early days of his series, granting him a powerful fireball tackle as an attack. The attack itself automatically halts Kirby's vertical momentum and sends him careening at high speed straight forward, plowing through enemies, metal blocks, and other obstacles along the way. While traveling in this fashion, Kirby cannot be harmed by most things, though there is a brief window of vulnerability after finishing the attack where Kirby cannot move freely. This makes using the attack abovebottomless pits or nearspikes dangerous. Additionally, if Kirby slams into a wall while using the attack, he will recoil and bounce upward slightly. In certain situations, this can actually aid his movement, particularly inKirby: Canvas Curse, where Kirby is otherwise dependent onRainbow Lines to move upward.
In the games that Burning appears in, the ability can mainly be obtained from enemies such asFlamer,Fire Lion,Efreeti, andBobo. Though once distinct from theFire ability, the two began to merge starting withKirby Super Star, when Fire gained the "Burn" move. This attack would emulate the Burning ability's function, while being somewhat less potent. The two abilities would continue to appear separately from one another at regular intervals untilKirby: Canvas Curse. This game marked Burning's final appearance as a distinct ability untilKirby's Dream Buffet, seventeen years later. Starting withKirby: Squeak Squad, Burning would almost exclusively appear as part of Fire's moveset.
Appearance[edit]
Burning was given a hat inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, which later also appeared inKirby & The Amazing Mirror: a golden tiara with a fire-shaped red gem on its front, surrounded by two golden wing-shaped details on each side, as well as a smaller fire-shaped gem in its back. Unlike Fire's hat, no flame burns on the hat itself, and instead Kirby's hands each have a flame that constantly burn.

Kirby's Adventure[edit]
Burning first appears inKirby's Adventure, where it is called Fireball. AbsorbingFlamer orFire Lion allows Kirby to use this ability to tackle his enemies as a fireball, being invincible as he burns. Fireball deals 4 damage inKirby's Adventure[1] and deals 5 damage inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[2]
Kirby's Dream Course[edit]
Burning, referred to as "Fireball" in-game, reappears inKirby's Dream Course, and is once again provided byFlamer. It can be used to dash forward at rapid speeds, similar toWheel. If used to hit an opponent in 2 player mode, the other player burns for a few seconds and is launched into the air.
Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]
Burning appears in this game, provided byFlamer,Efreeti, and theDropped Stars fromMr. Bright's sunbeam attack. By himself, Kirby can use this move for its usual effect, but it gains additional powers when combined with theAnimal Friends:
| Friend | Appearance | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Coo | Coo transforms into a burning fire ball and dives down to the ground in a diagonal line. | |
| Kine | Kine exhales a powerful fire blast that travels straight across the screen. | |
| Rick | Rick uses his fire breath against enemies. This looks very similar to theFire ability. |
Kirby's Block Ball[edit]
| “ | The ball burns for a period of time, running through the blocks it strikes. | ” | — Kirby's Block Ball North American instruction booklet |
Burning (calledFlame in-game andBurn in the manual) appears in this game, and can be obtained fromFlamer or from an Ability Changer. Using this power, Kirby can fly straight upward and pass through many types of blocks, only coming to a stop when hitting a stronger obstacle or the paddle. It can be seen as the opposite ofStone in this game, as it travels straight up while Stone travels straight down.
Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]
Burning reappears inKirby's Dream Land 3 as the sole fire-based ability in the game. It can be obtained by inhaling fire enemies likeBobo,Magoo, orBoboo. Just like inKirby's Dream Land 2, using this ability in its basic form causesKirby (orGooey) to briefly launch himself forward in form of a fire ball.
Combinations[edit]
As inKirby's Dream Land 2, the Burning ability can be combined with any of Kirby'sAnimal Friends, both old and new, to create a new power. The following combinations are possible:
| Friend | Appearance | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Chuchu | Kirby exhales a short-ranged burner flame that damages enemies nearby. If the B Button is pressed during the attack, Kirby will point the flame upwards and use Chuchu as a hot air balloon. | |
| Coo | Coo transforms into a burning fire ball and dives down to the ground in a diagonal line. | |
| Kine | Kine exhales a powerful fire blast that travels straight across the screen. | |
| Nago | Nago makes Kirby spit out a towering flame that creeps along the ground until it burns out. | |
| Pitch | Pitch changes into a fire ball and travels along the screen while leaving Kirby behind. Kirby has to wait for him to come back until the attack can be used again. | |
| Rick | Rick uses a fire breath against enemies. This looks very similar to the Fire ability. |
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]
InKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, the Burn ability allows Kirby to perform a flame dash which charges through enemies. If Kirby obtains two Burn power ups in the form ofBurn-Burn, the dash will become much stronger and will last longer.
Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]
InKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, the ability is re-titled to Burning, but otherwise functions exactly the same as it did inKirby's Adventure. Here the ability gets its own hat, being a tiara with a flame emblem. Burning also sets Kirby's hands on fire while the ability is not in use, but this is purely cosmetic.
Burning was merged into the Fire ability for most ofKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land's development, like it was inKirby Super Star. Near the end of development, designer Teruhiko Suzuki insisted upon splitting them, working overtime to ensure they would be separate.[3]
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]
Acting the same as it did inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Burning reappears inKirby & The Amazing Mirror alongside Fire. It can be obtained from Flamer and themid-bossBatafire. It can also be obtained by swallowing the fire bullets fromMaster Hand andCrazy Hand.
Unlike most abilities in that game, Burning does not reappear inKirby: Squeak Squad, but is instead integrated with Fire like inKirby Super Star. This is also the last mainline appearance of Burning as its own Copy Ability.
Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]
InKirby: Canvas Curse, Kirby can obtain Burning by defeating aFlamer orBobo. The ability functions very much like in the previous games; however, the player must touch Kirby in order to activate it. When activated, the Burning ability destroys any gray blocks and blocks marked with a fire sign. Unlike in other games, however, it cannot be used to breakmetal blocks. One useful side-effect of the Burning ability is its upward recoil when hitting walls, allowing Kirby to gain height without the use of Rainbow Lines.
Though not a gameplay effect, when the player draws the picture quickly inPaint Panic, Kirby flies forward as if he activated Burning.
Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]
InKirby: Triple Deluxe, Burning Kirby appears on one of the collectiblekeychains, using a sprite fromKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.
Kirby Star Allies[edit]
While Burning does not appear as its own ability inKirby Star Allies, it is referenced by two separateDream Friends' movesets.Rick's Fire Rick move as part of theRick & Kine & Coo trio is based on his version of Burning inKirby's Dream Land 2 andKirby's Dream Land 3, andGooey's Burning Gooey move is based on the normal Burning ability as it appeared inKirby's Dream Land 3.
Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

After a long absence as a proper ability, Burning makes a reappearance inKirby's Dream Buffet as a single-useCopy Food ability, taking the form of a chili pepper. It functions the same as prior titles (but in a 3D space). Unlike prior titles, the player can control Kirby's direction of movement as he charges forward. If used to hit an opponent, the target is launched into the air and knocked back. If the player presses the button again while using the attack, Kirby is given a small burst of extra speed, which is referred to asTurbo Burning.[4] Kirby will not roll off edges while using this ability.
Kirby Air Riders[edit]
While Burning does not appear as a Copy Ability inKirby Air Riders, it appears as theSpecial move of red and purple Kirby. No hat is provided when activating the special move. The Fire Copy Ability also features the "Burn" move as part of its moveset inKirby Air Riders, activated by performing a Quick Spin.
As part of the Fire ability[edit]
Burning has been largely dissolved as an ability by being incorporated intoFire's moveset sinceKirby Super Star. Its last main series appearance was inKirby & The Amazing Mirror, and its only appearances since then have been spin-offs.
| Burning's appearances as part of the Fire ability | |
|---|---|
| Game | Button Execution |
| Kirby Super Star | Dash + Y |
| Kirby: Squeak Squad | Dash + B |
| Kirby Super Star Ultra | Dash + B |
| Kirby's Return to Dream Land | Dash + 1 |

| Kirby: Planet Robobot | Dash + B |
| Kirby Star Allies | Dash + B/Y |

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
InSuper Smash Bros. Melee andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, Kirby uses the Burning ability as his dash attack. Notably, this attack allows him to pass through his opponents, but inMelee, it would not stop Kirby from falling off of ledges while the move was in effect, much unlike how it functions in theKirby games. InUltimate, the burning tackle simply stops at ledges instead.
