Buccaneer Birdy is the 70th episode of theKirby: Right Back at Ya! series. In this episode,Professor Curio discovers an old book that indicates both thatTokkori is descended from a royal bird and that there is a buried treasure chest left inDream Land by a dread pirate who owned that bird. Everybody gets busy trying to find the treasure after attempting to sweet-talk Tokkori into letting them have his "inheritance". After receiving a hint fromKabu, they find the treasure in a cave by the coast, butKing Dedede andEscargoon attempt to steal it and sendMoggy afterKirby to give themselves a chance to get away. They end up failing to do this when aJoe forces them to dump most of the treasure in the ocean, andTiff helps Kirby by tossing him the last piece of treasure - a golden mirror - which he uses to gain theMirrorCopy Ability and defeat the monster. During this event, an image is uncovered in the cave which proves that Tokkori is not the descendant of the pirate's bird after all, but Tiff helps him out by doctoring the image to make it look more like him.

This episode marks the final appearance of theMirrorCopy Ability in the anime series.

Plot synopsis[edit]

Professor Curio discovers a picture of a famous bird in an old book that resembles Tokkori.

The episode begins in theCappy Town plaza, whereTiff findsTokkori in a particularly sour mood. He proceeds to make a nuisance of himself by complaining loudly aboutKirby, and then teasing the kids with their soccer ball by punting it intoChef Kawasaki's face. Meanwhile,Professor Curio is examining a torn-up book in his home, and sees an illustration of a pirate with a bird on his shoulder that looks like Tokkori. Later on, many of the senior Cappies gather to complain about Tokkori's behavior within ear-shot of the bird, and he retaliates by dumping a mattress onSamo's head and leaving in a hush. Tiff and the kids try to determine where he went, and Curio runs in to tell them that he found some astonishing information about the bird and urges the others to help find him. Tokkori later stops at the beach and wonders why nobody seems to like him, when Curio and the kids catch up to him. Curio then relays that Tokkori may be a descendant of a royal bird that once belonged to a dread pirate two centuries ago. Tokkori does not believe him at first, but his attitude changes when he sees the tattered picture of the bird, and he proceeds to demand that everyone start treating him with the respect owed to royalty.

Later on, atCastle Dedede,Escargoon tellsKing Dedede about the news of Tokkori's lineage, and relays that since the dread pirate visited Dream Land, there could be buried treasure somewhere that they have not discovered yet. At the same time, the people in Cappy Town realize this as well, and Tokkori starts signing off portions of the treasure if discovered to everyone in town in order to make them like him better. This rush of papers is interrupted when King Dedede and Escargoon drive in and give Tokkori a royal greeting, inviting him to the castle. Dedede and Escargoon then butter up Tokkori with a royal banquet, but the bird immediately rubs King Dedede the wrong way with his attitude. He manages to hold it together, however, and he and Escargoon ask Tokkori about the buried treasure, but Tokkori insists that he does not care about it at all.

King Dedede and Escargoon open the hidden chest to discover it full of treasure.

Meanwhile, the Cappies get to work digging random holes inMayor Len's sheep pen looking for the treasure, as Professor Curio suggests the treasure was buried in a field. After relaying another cryptic hint, the Cappies decide to tryKabu Canyon next. Once they arrive, they askKabu if the treasure is buried in the canyon, and he responds by relaying that the chest in question has a skull and crossbones on it, and is hidden in a cave at the harbor. At this news, the Cappies run off to the coast. Escargoon soon learns this as well, and he and King Dedede drive off with Tokkori in tow to beat the others there. They arrive at the cave first and discover a massive locked wooden door in their way, but they see a small tunnel up above that Tokkori would fit in, and send him through with a lantern. Tokkori comes out the other side and finds a key ring on the ground, along with a note left behind by the pirate. Tokkori opens the note, only to discover to his horror that it also contains a complete picture of the bird, which demonstrates that it was not the same species as him, and therefore could not have been his ancestor.

Moggy is sliced in half by a Mirror Cut.

Disheartened at this news, Tokkori tries to keep it a secret, but he is scared by some crumbling bones and goes flying back out of the chamber with the keys. Once on the other side, his keys are snatched by King Dedede, and he and Escargoon proceed to dump Tokkori and head inside. The Cappies soon find their way into the cave, and Tokkori points them through the door, telling them that King Dedede is already inside. As the Cappies rush forward, Tiff and Kirby discover the picture, and realize that the bird is not related to Tokkori. Tiff rolls up the paper and takes it with her, which results in Tokkori being unable to find it as he follows the crowd. King Dedede and Escargoon wander into a large chamber in the cave, and soon find the treasure chest atop a pile of rubble. After seeing the shining gold inside, they are soon surrounded by the Cappies, who demand they hand it over. King Dedede laughs at this, as he had ordered amonster in advance just in case of a situation like this. Kirby takes the time he has before it arrives to try andinhale the treasure chest away from Dedede and Escargoon, but his inhale is interrupted by the earth shaking whenMoggy appears in the cave and attacks him.

Kirby tries to inhale Moggy, but it burrows and reappears behind him, intent on pulling Kirby into the ground. Tiff saves Kirby by tossing a rock at the monster, and then proceeds to chase after King Dedede and Escargoon before they get away. King Dedede and Escargoon evade Tiff by jumping on to a rock out at sea, but they are shortly met by aJoe who antagonizes them, andKine shows up saying he led Joe here to help Tiff. As Joe attacks, King Dedede and Escargoon accidentally dump all of the treasure into the ocean. They try to swim down toward it, but Joe chases them and forces them away. Kine offers to get Tiff the treasure, but she insists that it is better not collected, and runs back into the cave with the empty chest. Tiff returns to find Kirby in trouble with the monster, and she opens the chest to find one last piece of jewelry inside: a golden hand-mirror. She tosses it to Kirby and he inhales it to gain theMirrorCopy Ability. Using this ability, Kirby manages to block Moggy's attacks, then confuse it using mirror images of himself, then finish it off by slicing it in half with the Mirror Cut technique. Later on, Tiff has Tokkori open the treasure chest in front of all the Cappies, revealing only the picture discovered in the cave. However, this time the picture portrays the pirate's bird with a beak that matches Tokkori's, proving his nobility to all of those present. It is later shown, however, that Tiff doctored this image using some paint in order to help Tokkori out. The episode ends as Tokkori insists regardless that nobody treat him as royalty anymore, and Tiff, Tuff, and Kirby comment on the situation.

Differences between versions[edit]

Japanese-exclusive scene where Mayor Len accidentally crashes into a house in Cappy Town.
  • In the Japanese version, there is a small extra scene where the ball Tokkori kicks also hits Mayor Len's car, causing him to crash it into a nearby house.

Dialogue differences[edit]

  • In the Japanese version, when the townsfolk are complaining about Tokkori, they also wonder about his upbringing and origin.
  • In the Japanese version, the dread pirate is specifically mentioned as "Captain Kick", and his bird is named "Lord James Coleet". These two go unnamed in most international versions.
    • Additionally, Lord James Coleet is never identified as royalty, only as a bird of superior standing.
  • In the Japanese version, Tokkori upsets King Dedede during his banquet by demanding the king do tricks for him.
  • In the Japanese version, Lord James Coleet's beak identifies him to the others as a cockatoo, rather than a parrot.
  • In the Japanese version, Mirror Kirby shouts the names of his attacks as he uses them.
