Abottomless pit (also referred to as just apit) is an off-screen or otherwise "out of bounds" area that will causeKirby or other playable characters to be defeated or be forced to return to the stage if entered. These areas are usually marked by a black or gray border. A bottomless pit can only exist beneath the bottom of the screen, and if no other indications of its danger are present, the player can recognize a bottomless pit if the camera doesn't keep scrolling down as Kirby approaches it.

When enemies or other items fall into a bottomless pit, they are removed from the game, though they can usually still respawn if Kirby leaves and comes back, as per usual. This method is often used to dispose of otherwise invulnerable enemies likeShotzo, which can fall into a bottomless pit if its supporting block is removed.

Game appearances[edit]

Bottomless pits feature in every main seriesKirby title. In certain titles, falling into a bottomless pit does not incur an instant defeat. Some games may make use of an assisting item or feature to save the player from instantly being defeated by a bottomless pit. Spin-off games also feature bottomless pits, with some in games likeKirby Tilt 'n' Tumble andKirby: Canvas Curse still causing the player to lose a life. However, falling into them in some games may instead give a different penalty that may simply deductpoints from the player's score counter or induce HP losses.

Some bosses likeMecha-Kracko,Yin-Yarn, andQueen Sectonia also utilize bottomless pits as a hazard, which can be dangerous if the player is attempting to maneuver around various attacks.

Notable appearances[edit]

Kirby's Dream Course[edit]

InKirby's Dream Course, these areas are referred to asOB (short for "out of bounds"). In 1P Game, falling into an OB zone causes the player to lose a life. In 2P Game, falling into an OB zone instead subtracts 2 HP from the player and causes them to instantly lose the currentCopy Ability they have.

Kirby Air Ride[edit]

InKirby Air Ride, falling into a pit will either slow Kirby down or cause his machine to respawn with minimal HP. InAir Ride, the only course to have bottomless pits isCelestial Valley, and theSand course inTop Ride features a crumbling quicksand pit that can sometimes empty. Stage 1 ofDestruction Derby also has stones which can be busted, revealing bottomless pits that can be fallen into.

Kirby's Epic Yarn /Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn[edit]

InKirby's Epic Yarn andKirby's Extra Epic Yarn, falling into a bottomless pit will cause Kirby (and/orPrince Fluff in 2-player mode on the Wii version) to be pulled out byAngie, causing him to drop his beads along the way. InDevilish Mode, it additionally results in the loss of oneLife Piece.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

InKirby's Return to Dream Land andKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, pits instantly defeat Kirby and friends. However, turning onHelper Magolor in the latter game'sStory Mode will result in him coming to the rescue to fish out any player that has fallen into a bottomless pit. He is unavailable during the entirety ofAnother Dimension andExtra Mode.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

InKirby: Triple Deluxe, holding aReviving Tomato in the inventory will result in the player being revived as usual when falling into a pit during certain boss battles. In addition, it is impossible to lose a life via falling down a pit after said bosses are defeated as Kirby will be forced back onto solid ground if he does.

Kirby: Planet Robobot /Kirby's Blowout Blast[edit]

InKirby: Planet Robobot'sKirby 3D Rumble sub-game and its enhanced versionKirby's Blowout Blast, falling into a bottomless pit will cause Kirby to lose points and a sliver of hishealth, then respawn on the main area of the stage.

Kirby Battle Royale[edit]

There is only one bottomless pit that can be accessed inKirby Battle Royale, with that being theapple hatches in theApple Scramble battle mode. If a hatch opens below the player, they may fall into it and be temporarily taken out of the game, in a similar fashion to a KO.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land /Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World[edit]

InKirby and the Forgotten Land andKirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World, falling into a pit causes Kirby orBandana Waddle Dee to lose around 50 HP (about 1/8th maximum HP in Spring-Breeze Mode or 1/5th in Wild Mode), then return to the field of play near the point where he fell.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

InKirby's Dream Buffet, the various stages featured in theRace andBattle Royale modes have bottomless pits, but falling into one simply causes Kirby tohover automatically and slow down. By repeatedly pressing A several times, the player can hover out of the pit faster and return to normal play, but larger or stunned Kirbys have a higher tendency to fall into a pit and be temporarily removed from gameplay for a while.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

InKirby Air Riders, much like withKirby Air Ride, falling into a pit slows down a rider and deals damage to their machine (worth a little over half of thePaper Star's maximum HP), causing them to respawn near where they fell provided that their machine still has any HP remaining. Bottomless pits can be found in the Air Ride coursesAirtopia Ruins,Crystalline Fissure,Cavernous Corners,Cyberion Highway,Galactic Nova, andCelestial Valley, as well as beneathSkyah. Additionally, flying too far from Skyah will cause the rider and their machine to get struck by lightning, causing a similar effect to a bottomless pit.
